Snow is falling in the Kingdom of Kent when Ermenilda and Wulfhere meet for the first time. She is a Kentish princess, determined to take the veil. He is an exiled prince of Mercia, ruled by ambition.
To win Ermenilda, Wulfhere promises her father he will take back the Mercian throne. He will also renounce his pagan ways and convert to Christianity. When the king agrees, Ermenilda is devastated.
Trapped in a marriage she does not want, Ermenilda struggles between her unexpected passion for her husband and hatred for his harsh, warmongering ways. Wulfhere, initially secure in the knowledge that he has claimed the only woman he will ever want, soon begins to realize that possessing a woman and owning her heart are not the same thing. --
Although each novel follows on historically, THE KINGDOM OF MERCIA series can be read as separate, stand alone, love stories.

Dawn of Wolves (Kingdom of Mercia #3) by Jayne Castel is a kindle scout book. I haven't read the first two books and I didn't get lost. I am not one for romance but yeah, look at this cover! Wow, I am old but I still have some hormones! Anyway, this was a lot better than I thought a romance novel was going to be. It was a historical one, maybe that made it better. A good plot, developed characters, and not centered around sex like a lot of "romance' novels I have read. This actually has a story! Good book, I can't believe I am saying this about a romance novel, but yes, a very good book!
I had expected this book to be about shifters, but it wasn't much to my delight. Although a romance, it's more heavily into the historical aspect. A few sex scenes, but not overly explicit. The author has toned down the historical characters (see note at the end) so they are more likable. Even so, the book story shows the brutal side of life during the time period. In all, I enjoyed it, and think those who like historical romances will enjoy it as well.
Really enjoyed this one! I’m so glad I picked it up because this is the epitome of “don’t judge a book by the cover” because seriously, that cover is truly terrible. But the story is so good! It’s sweeping and evocative and Wulfhere and Ermenilda were such nuanced, well written characters who had faults and good qualities alike.
It's so hard to put down a book like this. Here I am in the middle of the night. I love Jayne Castle's writing of historic novels of people taken from history.
I knew there would be sex scenes. 4 rating instead of 5 as a protest that we should be forewarned. I read all three because I just can't find any good writers. Very real, great characters. I just wish there was something without explicit sex, not a clean read, sex is fine-- just don't want explicit details.
Don’t start with Wulfhere and Ermenaldine’s tale! Read book one first or the others in the series will pale in comparison. I gave 5 stars because this alpha male really went the lengths to earn his Queens love.
