The Paper Boat

Rate this book
Stunning conclusion to the Thirteen series!    Avery has just one chance to save her life—and the lives of her friends.

Candlelight danced on the gold-gilded walls and illuminated the stained-glass windows.
You have one chance.
She held her breath and started down the aisle, determined to not let this opportunity pass. Every silent step reminded her that a thirteen-year-old discovered in this castle was as good as dead.
But not talking to the king could mean a death sentence for everyone she loved.

The king is very ill and in a hurry to hand over his power to a new generation when rumors begin to circulate through the kingdom. It appears the king is unaware of the queen’s sinister plot against the thirteen-year-old orphans, as she wants to ensure her child becomes rightful heir to the throne.

Avery weighs the pros and cons of seeking an audience with the king while the castle is dealt a heavy blow; but Avery decides the risk is worth taking, and she steps out of the shadows for the first time since entering the castle walls.  When Avery is offered the opportunity of a lifetime, will she choose a life free from hardship within the castle walls. . .or her family and the home she left behind?

After anticipating this book for months, I felt like it fell a little flat for me. The ending was super rushed and there were some parts that seemed a bit predictable. I would still say the first book of this trilogy was my favorite and I still did overall enjoy this series. They were fun, easy reads. :)

Most of this story was great. The revolutionary mindset was lovely, and I love a good reunion.

Still, inconsistencies drove me crazy, and the ending felt rushed and a bit anti-climactic. Avery’s intelligence came and went to please the plot, which was annoying.

I really liked how some of the plot points were huge twists that turned things on their heads.

However, some of the big reveals undid some of the previous plot twists in the series, leaving me confused rather than satisfied with how things ended.

Avery and her friends, now hidden in the secret tunnels under the castle, continue to uncover secrets and thwart plots, some of which they started. And the question always comes back to this: Who is the king's heir? They discovered the king's son, but the portrait of the queen after her birth showed twins. Is it possible there is a daughter ... Avery? Kate?

The Paper Boat is the intriguing conclusion to the Thirteen Series. It is first and foremost a mystery. It is short and easy to read, fitting the middlegrade age group. As in the previous books, the story moves quickly from one situation to the next, the characters barely blinking in adjustment. The quickness wasn't something I liked, but it worked well for the story.

The question is asked: Is it actually good to be a princess? There are constant plots to dethrone and kill the king, queen, and the royal children. Who wants to live that way, always looking over one's back and not trusting anyone? Sure, the luxury is great, but there is a lot of responsibility accompanying it. Some of the responsibility can be used to help others, a possible redeeming factor. But if given a choice to be a princess or an ordinary girl in a loving family, what is the best decision?

The story also explores what it means to be family. What if your parents aren't actually your birth parents? Can a group of friends be family too? These and other questions are touched on through the experiences and actions of the characters.

I enjoyed this book and recommend it as an appropriate, Christian, middlegrade fantasy.

I received a complementary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Such an amazing ending to a great series!!
I didn’t expect any of that at all. Such a great little series to read and enjoy. Fast paced and easy to get into.

Definitely a must read series :)

I think this book was the last of the series (or trilogy), and it wrapped things up wonderfully. It had all the mysteries, intrigue, puzzles, and adventures of the past two, but it also answered most of the questions that were raised in the story. I love the characters - they're really sweet and clever. But sometimes they were - I don't know - really simple...? They weren't particularly complex even though some had mysterious pasts. The main characters were mostly thirteen, so I suppose that is the reason. And the ending was so happy :D

But the ending also was not as wrapped up as I supposed it would be. For instance I'm really thinking there should be another book, but sure didn't sound like there would be.

All in all it was a good series, with lots of puzzles and interesting twists and surprises. It'd probably be better enjoyed by younger readers. The main characters are 13 and there's nothing inappropriate. There's suspense, but never anything really gut-wrenching. I could predict most of the upcoming events correctly. Of course, older readers could love it too, but it probably would be a cozy and comfortable story for them - not like a wild ride of heart attacks.

I am giving this three stars because I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt that perhaps the other two books that proceeded it, which I didn't read, were great world-building, adventurous, spell-binding, rivioting stories of daring do, and the protagonist was not obsessed with her hair and dress, because that is the opposite of what I read in this last book in the series.

Avery has been thrown in prison, and has news for the king, but he thinks she is his long lost daughter, and welcomes her home. Is she? Is she not? You would think there would be some suspense there, but there isn't, really, and who cares either way. I kept thinking there was going to be a great reveal. That she would solve all the problems, presented in this book, such as the evil counselor, but instead she just goes and reads her bible.

That was the problem I had with the book. Because there was no world building, sat least by the time the third book came around, I could not figure out where this was supposed to be happening. It appeared to be a fantasy world, but then there was the Bible that she read when she was feeling frustrated, or the reference to the Olympics.

So, it is an ok middle school book, and a quick read, but it is so convoluted that I found I couldn't really enjoy it. As I said, I've given it three stars because perhaps all that is covered in earlier books, but true sequels should work even without having read the earlier books.

Wonderful

I'm an adult and I was completely drawn into these characters! I was just so taken in by the adventure and the danger that Avery faced I couldn't book my kindle down. It was a great book and a wonderful way to end such a delightful series. Just to simply put it, I loved this story!! 💖

sadly, i was disappointed with this one😔it felt rushed, and my favorite character (KENDRICK) faked his death, then reappears in the 2nd-to-last chapter💀 (WHAT WAS THAT?!) i had way too many questions at the end, not the way to end your trilogy!

I thought this was a good last book to the trilogy, and the mysteries and plot twists kept me interested. I flew through this trilogy.

I loved this book!!!

Not just this book but the whole series. I loved how the author left lots of things so secret and then revealed it later it was filled with so much mystery and you come so close to the characters this book is especially good for people who are around "thirteen" ☺ I'm usually am not a very fast reader but this book has a cliff hanger at the end of every chapter and makes you want to read more

Overall, it was a good children's trilogy, but the ending was anticlimactic and a little bit of a let down. It was unrealistic, even for a kid's series. The other two books had set a good pace. I think the series would have stood better if there had been more books to develop the story and wrap the ending up. I would still recommend the series though.

An exciting and interesting ending to a fun story. Once again, I find myself a bit at a loss for words since I don't want to be spoilery, but I'll do my best.

Overall, this trilogy as a whole was a 4 star read for me. Back when I was closer to the age of the main characters, I probably would have given it 5 stars. Just like with the previous two, I enjoyed the twists and turns of this final installment, and once again, it actually caught me by surprise a time or two.

My only real complaint was that I was a little unsure about the ending and even listened to the last few chapter of the audiobook twice just to be sure I understood what happened. It's nice that but it still left me wondering Like, I guess it just felt like a "happy for now" ending, and while I don't mind those, it seemed to me like Avery was thinking a lot more about the immediate future than potential consequences down the road. A realistic portrayal of adolescent thinking, I guess, but when one's life is changed as much as hers was, things don't just go back to the way they were, no questions asked. Maybe the authors were wanting to leave the door open for a possible future spin off or something, but even were I still a teenage reader, I don't know that this ending would have rung true for me any more than it does now. Still, it was a positive ending and didn't take away from my overall enjoyment, so that's why I'm not lowering my rating because of it.

I recommend this book and the trilogy as a whole for both teenage and adult readers who enjoy magic-free Christian fiction fantasy set in an alternate world. (Kingdom Adventure?)

Content Advisory:

Violence: Teenage lives are frequently in peril. Someone is thought to be being poisoned. Someone is actually poisoned and dies. (Zero description.) Threat of attack by rebels and some fighting, only mildly described. Someone is told to drown a couple of babies. (They don't.) Mention of a boat crash that has no survivors.

Spiritual: Mentions of the Bible and quotations from it pop up throughout, as do mentions of God. Some characters pray or see others praying (or pretending to pray in a couple instances). A chapel is mentioned many times.

Thank you NetGalley and Shiloh Run Press for a free digital copy of this book.

I decided to read this after reading books with almost same genre. I need to read other genre for there will be no bias or comparisons in the future. This is totally different genre because it is a Children's Fiction. I don't know but I recently enjoyed reading books in that genre.

I requested this book in NetGalley because it piqued my curiosity. But I am not aware that this book is part of the book series Thirteen and this is last installment. I know I'm such an ignoramus! As I was reading, I have so many questions as I could not keep up with the story. But it now made sense and I have to read the The Glass Castle (Thirteen #1) and The Ruby Moon (Thirteen #2) after reading book 3 because I have a feeling that the answers to my questions are in book 1 and book 2.

Anyway, each part of this book is exciting! From the moment Avery was captured to the moment that the King requested her presence! Especially when she risked her life to the dungeon.

I think the book is in fast pacing, but maybe I just feel it that way because it's the last part of the book. This is also an east to read book

Some twists are shocking! Yes, I am shock and did not expect those coming. But I don't know maybe I can anticipate those things if only I read book 1 and 2 before this.

This book is about betrayal, trust, courage and strong-willed. At thirteen years old, Avery acts and thinks like an adult. She's intelligent and will do anything for her family.

Well, I do not know what to feel about how the end goes. Really. I was not sure what to feel about the ending. But I do commend Ms. Trisha White Priebe and Jerry B. Jenkins for a unique plot and how they writes this book.

This book was very enjoyable. It had a fun storyline, and we even got to live as a princess for a while!
BUT WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT ENDING! It was so lazy. Everything just kind of resolved itself in the last 20 pages. The father just fOund the daughter, they just lEft the castle, all the lost people we’re just fOund somehow. And eVEryone is related, Kendrick ending up being Avery’s twin, and Kate being her adoptive mother’s daughter? And the old lady being her adoptive grandmother? And what happened to Kate’s older sister Edith? Am I stupid, was she just actually Kate?
She wove SO many secrets and plot twists through this book, and it really is so impressive! But also she left so much unanswered and then just answered it by saying, “There is so much about this castle that will remain forever a mystery.” Like no, you can’t just excuse that like that.
And then IT WAS ALL A DREAM?? Ok whatever.
In all honestly, apart from my rant, I did enjoy this series and I would recommend my future daughters to read it as well. It shone such a healthy light on how to be a good young Christian girl in hard times, as well as some of how to deal with feelings for a boy in a wise manner. It was all around a fun read and I also am very biased just because I love this time period!

Noooo, The Thirteen Series is finished!! Wow, the conclusion was really good, we got some amazing answers and a great ending! Though, it didn't completely astonish me, I still loved this book a lot. ⛵💙👑 It had the same feelings with characters, plot and setting as the other two books in the series, which was wonderful! I haven't re-read this before, it was my first time reading The Paper Boat. It was a very cute read, yet filled with dangerous mysteries and even more royal secrets! Avery, the main character, is amazing as always and she is now...14! The Paper Boat concludes this nostalgic and beautiful series, I'm going to miss more awesome adventures from Avery and her friends. 😊😥🥰

The story picks up directly after The Ruby Moon ends. The 13 year olds are disappearing one by one. Avery is convinced they should move to the tunnels under the castle. She discovers a plot against the king and finds out something about herself she never expected.
Avery is fixated on getting back to Henry her 3 year old brother. She makes some unwise decisions because of that.
I don't really get the ending.
I was surprised by how much the individual books are selling for. The books aren't very long but each is $9-10. I can't really recommend them for that price.

I received all three books from Netgalley in return for a review.

In the book The Paper Boat, authors Trisha Priebe and Jerry B. Jenkins continue following Avery who is on a strange journey at the age of 13 trying to find her brother and family.
The authors do a great job of moving the story along and keep you guessing until the end with many twists and turns in the story.
I would highly recommend this book for any reader even though I did not care for the ending of the book. I received a copy of this e-book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I was getting a little tired of the jumpiness and inconsistency of the characters. So many secrets. I did like how this book tied together a lot of the things that didn't make sense in the earlier books. The king was very weird and there was no discussion about him marrying his wife's sister while she was still alive. Maybe the target audience doesn't think about these thing? Overall still compelling enough that I read it in a day and I just ignored the things that don't make sense to my adult mind.

The fairy tale comes to a close in this third installment "The Thirteen" series. And like all good fairy tales, "they all live happily ever after". The whole series can be listened to (or read) in under 13 hours. Fairy Tales allow our imagination to go places we might never get to explore including careers. Given the chance of a lifetime to become the next Queen, will Avery choose to stay with her family of origin or with her biological parents -- the King and Queen!? Jaimee Draper does a terrific job of narrating the series.

Geez, this series started out much stronger than it finished. There was so much buildup in the first two books and even in the first 2/3 of this one. But it ended so... suddenly. Almost pointlessly. I got the impression that the writer was under a deadline or was at her creative wit's end and just wanted the series done and over with. Shame.

Good series and very entertaining. I always wanted to keep reading, yet the details often didn’t match up. For example, one would say they risked their life, yet what they did didn’t have details of much risk. Confusing sometimes and details didn’t fit. I kept waiting for the end when it would tie it all together, but the end was easy and quick and didn’t fully end and answer everything.

Start the series from book 1 & it’s actually quite interesting. Plenty of cliff hangers and keeps you going.

Book 3 has ended with an ending where if the author wanted to write more they could but also if they chose never to write within this series again you don’t feel like you’ve missed out. A very good ending. I found this series by accident but glass I stuck it out.

The Paper Boat

This book did not measure up to the excitement and intrigue of the two previous books but perhaps that is because I wanted it to end differently.
