In this first installment of NY Times bestselling author, Wendy Higgins’s debut New Adult series, a frighteningly realistic apocalyptic America is brought to life, entwined with searing romantic tension that will leave you eager for more.
***
Amber Tate believes the worst thing she’ll suffer in life is dealing with the unrequited love she feels for her brother’s best friend, Rylen Fite. She also believes war is something unfortunate that happens places far, far away from her rural Nevada town. She’s wrong on both counts.

When an unknown organization meticulously bombs major cities in the United States and across the globe, a trickle-down effect spreads to remaining towns at an alarming speed—everything from food and water sources to technology and communications are compromised. Without leadership, the nation is split between paralysis and panic, but Amber isn’t one to hide or watch helplessly. She’s determined to put her nursing skills to use, despite the danger, even if it means working alongside the man she can never have.

My first NA story. This will be a series, probably 4 books. It's still in the early stages of planning. All I can tell you is that I'm completely in love so far.

Since I was a teen I've suffered recurring apocalyptic nightmares, stuff like RED DAWN where we're being invaded and I'm traveling the U.S., trying to stay alive amid the enemy and chaos. And there are always sexy undertones to these frighteningly realistic dreams. After all these years I think it's time to put those nightmares to good use.

Look for book 2, UNREST, coming January 2017.

There is nothing better than a fantastic heroine and Wendy Higgin’s delivers a new favorite for me with Amber Tate. Amber’s voice pulled me in immediately as she swept me up in memories of her childhood and teenage years, falling for her brother’s best friend Rylen Fite. Within mere pages I was sold on Amber and Rylen, wanting their happily ever after, hoping for it with every page I turned. The world basically begins to implode around them as an invisible enemy attacks the United States. As Amber is a paramedic and genuinely driven to help people, we’re taken with her right into the center of the chaos. Her strength and bravery pushes the pacing, and I swear I didn’t look up from my kindle until well into the night, desperate to work out what was happening and to see characters I was falling for make it out alive. The plot is so well-written I was uneasy by the authenticity of it. I have to say my heart broke numerous times for Amber and her friends. And yet, the dialogue is so realistic between the friends that their banter, despite their dire circumstances, brought much-needed moments of lightness and balance.

Engrossing romantic tension, action-packed suspense, a kickass heroine and heartfelt emotion, Unknown has everything I want in a book and much more! Five epic stars!

Unknown was intense, gritty, emotional and a book I can't recommend enough. It's unlike any other dystopian that I've read because we actually got to witness the demise of the world. And I had no clue the depths my heart would ache watching this tale unfold. But there was hope in those final pages, and it was definitely a heart stopping journey to get there! I absolutely loved Unknown and I can't wait to start the next book!
When it rains, it pours. And floods. And washes away adolescent dreams.

Unknown started with us witnessing an organization planing to wipe the majority of world's population off the map. But in the next chapter we transitioned and met Amber Tate. And we spent the next 25% of the book growing up with her. She jumped back to when she was six years old and first met Rylen Fite, who was their neighbor, and became her older brother's best friend. And we watched them grow up together, with jumps of time that were seamlessly done. Their past wasn't always easy, and sadness, love, mortification, tender moments, heartache and joy filled the pages. I found myself with tears in my eyes, butterflies in my belly and I even curled into a ball at one moment. It was all so emotional. Besides Rylen and Amber, her brother Tate, her parents, grandparents and even her best friend Remy were integral parts to this story. I knew them all so well and I loved every single one of them.
I opened my eyes and looked into his solemn eyes. A painful crack split my heart. Why did I have to love him so much? Would it always hurt like this?

But one of the many things we discovered watching Amber grow up was how she fell for Rylen. Amber loved Rylen with her whole heart and soul. And it was heartbreaking that he saw her as not only a best friend, but as his little "sister". And if that wasn't hard enough, a huge wrench got thrown in between them when they were older. I felt betrayed and broken, just like Amber. I kept trying to figure out a way around it. But make no mistake, regardless of what happened, I absolutely loved Amber and Rylen. Nothing could sway me from being obsessed with the both of them. I got so caught up in their lives that before I knew it the whole world came crashing down around them. I was not prepared for the horror that unfolded.
My face fell against his shoulder and I bawled against his neck. “ Oh, my God . . .” My hands tightened, fisting his shirt in my palms, holding him like a lifeline as my mind threatened to shatter into unfixable pieces.
He never said a word. Just ran.

You know the scariest part? It all felt so real. And I could easily see all of this death and destruction happening now. The rest of the book was watching in horror as the apocalypse unraveled. And each page I turned there was something else that happened that would give me goosebumps, or take my breath away, or make me pause because it was too terrifying. And just when I thought we got a break from it, I was taken to an entirely different level of pain. Especially towards the end. My heart broke for Amber. So be prepared for an action packed, heart breaking journey.
Because this was life. Laughter, love, friendships. We had a way of life to protect. We weren’t perfect by any means, but we were good . And we sure as hell weren’t giving it up without a fight.

Do you ever read a book and just want everyone you know to pick it up? Unknown is that book for me. So if you're a fan of dystopian, check this one out. Just keep in mind that the first 25% of the story you're growing up and becoming embedded into their family and lives. And if you're a fan of Wendy Higgins, Unknown is very gritty compared to her other books. And the romance, well there isn't any romance per se, but there was a lot of hope for it in the future. Maybe. Possibly. We'll see. So join me in my obsession with this series, I desperately need lots of people to talk to about this book!!
We weren’t alone. As long as we had each other, there was hope.

PS My guess is that Bahntan is

Just imagine, for a moment, what it would be like if an intelligent race of beings were able to infiltrate every level of society on Earth undetected. And then, once embedded, they initiated the methodical extermination of humanity.

The edge of extinction wasn’t a place childhood friends Amber Tate, and Rylen Fite, ever thought they’d find themselves. Growing up in rural Nevada, Amber believed the only thing that could destroy her was her unrequited love for Rylen. She was wrong.

Wendy Higgins’ novel, UNKNOWN, is an alarming and well-written story of a young woman’s fight for survival, the realism of which will leave you breathless. Adult science fiction lovers and romance enthusiasts will fall hopelessly in love with the characters, compulsively turning pages until the end. I’m completely obsessed with this series’ gut-wrenching suspense and romantic tension and can’t wait for the second book, UNREST. Five huge stars!

Let me start with the warnings about this book.

It may be tagged with romance but you will only find the amount of romance you would expect in the first few pages of the average romance novel. By that I mean the attraction, the interest, the friendship but none the kissing or moving towards a relationship that you normally see. As a matter of fact, there is a huge event that makes it clear that's not in the cards. And it was hard to read for this romantic at heart. I understand that changes for book 2 but if you prefer you romance to be a big part of the story then you might want to pass on this one.

This book is tagged New Adult and it is, in the sense that the majority of it is set after Amber has turned 21. But the first 25% or so of the book is backstory. It's flashes and summary of her and Rylen growing up, becoming friends and him leaving for the military. He's gone for many years and they write letters to each other. All of that time, the book has a YA feel to it.

This book is also tagged apocalyptic and it really is. A world that we get to know through those flashbacks is utterly changed in a rapid fire of sadness that I struggled to absorb. The struggle is real for these characters and I guess I became attached because I hurt with them.

No, it's not your normal Wendy Higgins book.

I'm being very honest when I say that I struggled with this book. Parts of it drew me in and parts of it had me sad. But it was so hard to read. I just wanted some happy. When I thought about it afterwards, it was like reading only the first 1/4 of a book. It's unsettled and I'm unsatisfied.

I suspect many people will enjoy this type of book and be anxious to read and wait for more. But there will be some like me that expect something different from this author and I wanted to let them know what they are in for when they pick it up.

The writing is excellent. The characters are full and well defined. The story is poignant if not a bit predictable.

I like Rylen despite the blindside he brought about. At first I wanted to throw my iPad but as I figured out why (and I did figure out why before we learned) I can see it in his character. This is who he is. I'm just not sure he's my kind of book boyfriend.

The book is from Amber's POV and I like her. She's strong and determined. Her efforts to help people as things fall apart is admirable. And she holds up under some pretty tough circumstances. I hurt for her, really.

As you can tell my emotions were involved. But I don't know if I can read on in this series. Maybe after a break, I could consider it again. For now, I'm undecided.

5++ stars!
"In the end, our ways will be good for them. There will finally be equality for all. [...] And our people will finally be free. Don't you see? The cost is great, but the cause is greater."

Oh gosh, I already know that I will not be able to say enough good things about this book and wonderful author. It hooked me in right from the beginning, and I thought about the novel and its characters day and night until I could get back to reading it again.

The story follows Amber Tate, her brother Jason "Tater", his friend (and her crush) Rylen, her bff Remy, and the rest of her family as strange and increasingly horrific things begin happening in the US and all over the world. Bombs are dropped on our beloved and historic landscapes, water sources are contaminated, food is stripped away and controlled, and whole cities are decimated by an unknown enemy. What made this book really terrifying was how possible all of the devastation seemed. None of it seemed sci-fi (at least to me) because the way our modern civilization was efficiently dismantled and quickly descended into madness was believable and outright horrifying. The Enemy knew exactly how to cut off our communication (phones, wifi, tv, radios--all things on which we heavily rely on) in order to make the citizens more vulnerable, scared, and desperate [which was not always a 'good' thing].

It was also nice to follow a Hispanic family [read: NON-WHITE] as our MCs for once! I actually found myself relating to a lot of aspects in this novel--a mixed and giant Hispanic family, my brother off in the military while I crushed on one of his brothers-in-arms (nothing as serious as Amber and Ry though!), growing up in a small dusty town--which probably added to the overall realistic and creepy vibe. Amber (and all the others) was such an easy character to follow and empathize and really feel for. I love how Wendy is able to portray her characters' emotions in such a tangible way that I found myself laughing, crying, longing, hurting, breaking, loving, and cringing right along with them the entire way through. The secondhand embarrassment for Amber was SO REAL at times it hurt my heart!

Overall, I absolutely recommend starting this series! Wendy has not let me down so far, and I will be starting UNREST asap in preparation for the release of UNDONE!!

My Rylen Fite, just add in the scruff and chili pepper and tribal tattoos :)

OMG! This book! This is one of the best books I've read all year! It reminds me a lot of another book Life as We Knew It. It and this book are the only books I've read where the shit is happening now, not in the future, no we are living through it now with these characters and it's so scary. I feel the actions in this book could really happen in today's world and that it not a good thing. There was many times while reading this book that I found myself nervous if something like this were to happen. It would not end well for anyone.

Amber is just a normal girl in love with her brother's best friend. Though she never told him and thinks that he doesn't like her. She's an RN and enjoys helping people, she had a great family that loves her and her life isn't bad at all. Then it starts, every amusement park and movie studio is bombed all around the world.

Everyone is devastated but nothing more happens for around two years... then all hell breaks loose. It's not long before every right is taken away from every person and those that break the new rules are shot with no remorse at all. Amber is an amazing character and I love her to pieces, the shit she goes through and yet she never gives up.

Rylen is also really awesome, I love him. Honestly I like all the characters and think they are all very well thought out and flushed greatly. None feel like they are there just to be there, they all feel like they are real and just trying to survive like we would.

The sexual tension in this book is completely off the charts but it's not the whole point of this book. It is NA but nothing to is too dirty. What I love about this book is that it's plot driven, not romance or sex driven but plot and character driven and it's freaking fantastic! I love that perfect blend of romance and one kickass plot.

So give this one a try and I know you will love it! The only bad thing is how long it feels to wait for the next one.

If you're a fan of NA, romance, of sci-fi, put this book on your TBR! I read this book so fast because I couldn't put it down, and when I was forced to put it down, I couldn't wait to pick it back up again. Wendy brought all these different elements into this book and made it fantastic. I laughed, I cried, I shouted in rage, and sometimes wanted to punch certain characters. I'm really bad at writing reviews, but my point is: This book is really really great. Probably one of my favorites so far this year.

Life is filled with good and bad. We have to appreciate the good while we have it.
What impresses me the most is that Wendy Higgins manages to become better and better with every book she writes. Her debut Sweet Evil was rather mediocre, and her sophomore novel The Great Hunt was entertaining. Unknown, however, is atmospheric and frighteningly plausible.

When an unknown organization starts bombing major cities across the world, Amber Tate knows that the world as she knows it will be turned upside down. It's not long before food and water become scarce and the United States is left without leadership. Life turns into a fight for survival, and Amber is determined not to lose.

Amber is a fantastic protagonist. She isn't a special snowflake; she's a regular girl whose world has been turned upside down. That's a huge part of why she is so easy to connect to and sympathize with.

The romance is absolutely fantastic. Amber has been in love with her older brother's best friend Rylen for as long as she can remember, but, to her dismay, Rylen doesn't return those feelings. The romance isn't a huge focus of the story and takes a back seat to the eerie post-apocalyptic setting, but when it is present it shines and is filled with perfectly written chemistry and tension.

A highlight of the story is the emphasis on family and friendship. Amber's family is extremely tight-knit, and you can see how much they love each other. Amber's relationship with her best friend Remy is fantastic as well - they are supportive of one another and are there for each other through thick and thin.
I guess that’s how friendship was. You couldn’t help but hurt for each other.
If anything, there were just a few aspects of the story that were left unexplained, but I have a feeling those topics will be addressed in the sequels.

Unknown is gripping from start to finish and it eerily plausible and realistic. I cannot wait to see what happens next

This is my first New adult read also first by Wendy Higgins, I admit I like her writing and would love to read other of her works,The book was recommended by a reading group and i'm glad I read it.

The story is about Amber, her love for her brother's friend, and her family. I love the way the author included her she met Rylen and grew up together an the way her feelings for him grew as they become adults. Now faced with an unknown enemy that is bombing people all over the world they have to stick together especially now that her parents are dead bombed with her friend's parents and others at camp, They set out to look for others like them and find out who is killing the Earth's population.

I would have loved the book more if something actually happened between Amber and Rylen, or if she actually knows how he feels about her.

Review can be found on *Milky Way of Books*.

When I learned that Wendy Higgins would self-publish a new series I was quite excited! It came as a surprise and for someone like me who was introduced late to her previous series "The Sweet Trilogy", I was sold.

The story follows Amber and her family who live quite normal in Nevada. She has a long crush on her brother's best friend Rylen, yet she is way too shy to confess her feelings.
But when the bombings begin and a national spread illness begins to destroy the US and the world, Amber and her family will fight to survive against the odds and the unseen enemies.

While this book is dubbed also as a romance and it is actually a New Adult, the romantic element is faint and the scenes we see from Amber's eyes and feelings are devastating. I was crying over my reading app in the bus (so not comfortable!) when I read some scenes. Not to mention that is she was more forthcoming with her feelings, many bad incidents would not have hapenned.

The main focus of the story is the destruction and what happens to humanity when we are deprived from everything we have as granted. Amber is also trained as a paramedic so she has the knowldge and the wits to handle almost everything. Her family was strong and with tight bonds of love and while everything around them crumbled they tried to survive.

After that ending which was hard and with a cliffhanger, I seriously hope for the truth to be revealed and for more romance in the story. A perfect five and very recommended! ;)

Where do I even start? This was an action
packed story from beginning to end.

So I am basically still freaking out about
this book and I have to concentrate in order to be able to write this review
without making it just a load of fangirl words and squeals/shrieks.

REVIEW

Little
did I know that I was in for a huge, gigantic and massive surprise when I picked
this up.

The
best combination of words that I can use to describe this book won’t do it
justice honestly, believe me. It won’t.

But
I think that if you like new adult romance/sci-fi/dystopian books then you will
eventually give in and agree with me on this. I was already familiar with Wendy
Higgins writing style from reading the Sweet Evil trilogy a while back, but I never
thought that this book was going to change my view on her as an author. Ok. Ok slow
down! I don’t mean this in a bad way, I just truly believe that in this particular
book Wendy Higgins has gotten significantly more creative than in the Sweet
Evil books (I freaking love that trilogy btw). This was a gripping story from
the very first word.

So
right at the very beginning the first chapter which is a prologue, we are
introduced to these “people” and they are about to do something that will affect
everyone’s way of life as we know it and we don’t get to see much in this
prologue and obviously that was done on purpose to keep the reader on guessing
the whys and the hows. As I read the prologue I got the feeling this was going
to be a sci-fi/dystopian novel and I was right.

But
then… BANG in my face!!! When I actually finished the prologue and all of
sudden I’m in a different setting and seeing all these normal mundane things
happening with these main characters I’m being introduced to, this just seems
like a cute contemporary romance novel and I obviously got so much into it that
I freaking forgot about the prologue. Can you believe it?!

I
got so involved with the writing and the pace of the story that I got
distracted and then I was left with my mouth hanging open again when other
things started happening in order for the story to start flowing in a different
direction.

Anyways,
the main character is called Amber and we read from her perspective. I shall
not name other main/secondary characters because… spoilers. Amber is a strong,
loving, honest and real character and I freaking love her.

Amongst
all this craziness and pain and suffering we see throughout the book that is
Unknown, I really enjoyed the cute and loving moments the characters shared and
honestly, this I just what we do as humans. We might be in a bad situation but
there is always hope and when we stick together nothing can bring us down, but
sometimes good doesn’t always win.

There
is a little bit of a comic relief at some points in the book and that also
helped making this an easy and fast read.

The
action was awesome and it moved the story at a really nice pace whilst not
making it rushed.

Well,
look you just have to read it and come back for the spoiler filled review below…
honestly just go into it without knowing much more about it. You won’t regret
it.

So
if you want to give this a go, here is a

other links that will help you purchase these books ;)

                                                    SPOILERS

OH
MY GOD!!!

Ok
so if you’re reading this you obviously read the book, right?!

If
not GO AWAY! Read it first and then come back to read this part of the review.

I’m
just going to say it; please don’t judge me I don’t often lose it like this but…

HOLY
SHIT!!! OMFG!!! AHHHHHHHH

I
am still freaking out and experiencing PTSD because I didn’t expect this to
make me feel so alive and to relate so much to these characters and to
understand them even though I’ve never gone through something even remotely
similar to this (Thank God).

Ok
breath in… hold. Breath out… slowly. Ok. I’m fine now.

So,
like I mentioned above the beginning was crazy and that prologue was very
intriguing and mysterious and obviously left me wanting to know more about these
“people”?! Aliens?

Angels
of death? Hell, I don’t know but I freaking loved every single word in this
book. Ughh it’s so addictive and oh my god it was gripping from the first page.

I
loved the fact that after I read the prologue we go into this different place and
time and it’s so jarring to see this characters pop out of nowhere all of
sudden and I’m like, umm ok this is different and as I  kept going the less I thought about the
prologue and so eventually I just forgot about it and I started fangirling and
rooting for Amber and Ry as any fangirl would do and then…

I just want them together #RYMBER #AMLEN awww isn't this cute?!

image

These
bombings start happening and then we are going fast forward and seeing these
characters grow up really fast as more attacks happen in our world and more
people die ughhh. It was so heart breaking to see Amber not being able to express
her feelings for Ry and also not being able to let go of him for all these
years. And at the same time, I felt that he wasn’t completely oblivious to her
feelings but maybe he was trying to respect her and treat her like a sister
since they grew up together. I don’t know, but he does have more than brotherly
feelings towards her for sure and I just broke down crying when he brought
Livia (the wife) home and I don’t know how Amber was able to keep it together
so well at that moment but I know I wouldn’t be able to. But then omg omg omg
then we find out about Livia’s baby not being Ry’s and then Ry confesses to
Amber that they never even had sex because of the circumstances and ahhhhhhhh.

Ok
so this tent scene between Ry and Amber happened when they are near the camp at
the Mojave desert planning to rescue their family, Ry’s wife Livia and Remy’s
parents and everyone else. This part of the book had some of my favorite scenes
and the comic relief here just made me go; awwww a few times.

I
loved how Tates was all over Remy and how she kept flirting with him and how uncomfortable
Ry and Amber were after the morning wood scene lol.

I
was really scared when these military guys got introduced and I thought maybe
they were going to rape Amber and Remy and take them to the camp and then Tater
and Ry would have to rescue all of them but to my relief they were all good
guys, despite the fact that they were pervs.

As
for these weird people called Drips and Derps (the jersks) oh man did I get
angry with these idiots. I mean, to have a normal life and then to have to obey
these douchecanoes ughh!!!

Did
I cry when they killed off Granpa *tears up* it was so not fair what they did
and to know that there wasn’t anything that they could do at that moment but to
cooperate and just do what the officers said was so frustrating and even I felt
powerless.

Now,
back to the camp. Earlier on we see that Amber starts calling this place where
the Drips or Derps are taking their families, camps.

She
straight away assumes these places are like concentration camps from WWII and
sadly she is right.

As
our main characters plan this rescue mission to get everyone out of the camp I was
expecting us to switch perspectives with one of her family members in order for
us to know what is going on inside the camp but that didn’t happen and I kept
getting nervous with each word I read, dreading the worst might happen.

Then
finally when we get everyone together and we go look at the camp where we see
the Air Force planes fly by and all these Drips and Derps just flee the scene
in vans and all our loved characters just assume that the AF is there to help
but then they drop these bombs that end up killing everyone at the camp and at this
point I just burst into tears and I’m in Amber’s shoes and seeing all this
happening. They just lost everyone.  Everyone
that was important to them. The same people that made this book so cute in the
nice moments that we saw the family spend together over the past few years came
to mind and I was engulfed by sadness and anger.

All
of Amber’s family, Livia and Remy’s parents are gone. Along with all those
innocent people. It’s fair to call this genocide and we have to believe that
there must be a someone in charge that hopefully we will be able to defeat at
some point.

At
the very end we get to see everyone together again back where they were hiding before
the bombings. All of a sudden when Sean is trying to listen in for news on
their radio and Ry listens and realizes that someone is using morse code to communicate
and omg they find out that they have to move quick and try to get to this DPG
camp where they might find allies.

This
is where the books ends and I’m just sitting here. Back to reality and now
suffering from PTSD.

But,
that’s ok. Do you know why? Because I have another book to read and review
after this one.

And
after I do that, I have an ARC of Unrest (book 2) that was sent to me by these
awesome people at InkSlingerPR and basically it’s why I actually read this
book.

I
requested and ARC of Unrest without realizing that it was book 2 and I then
when I got the ARC I started reading Unknown and that is how I got addicted to
this amazing world that Wendy Higgins created.

I
rated this book 5/5 stars on Goodreads and Amazon.

I had one singular thought running through my head, about thirty pages from the end. Just one.

I asked myself, Jen, how many more times do you think this dumb bitch Amber is going to get dizzy and/or collapse again so men can worry over her? I mean, Jen, she's only gotten dizzy and collapsed seven times already. There's room for more.

Seriously.

This should have been a book about a tough as nails nurse, fighting her way through the collapse of the United States, having new adult sexy times with her hot as hell childhood sweetheart.

Instead it was a book about a weak, constantly dizzy, absolutely stupid, worst example of a woman who's defined by her need of a man, character, who has zero sexy times. And almost gets herself raped, and then needs men to protect her, and then whines and cries a lot.

This is a new adult book with no sexy times.

Look, I didn't buy this book for the sexy times. But I mean ... come on ...

Ugh.

I will not be rating this book since I DNFed it.
As a Latina, I am very offended with the way the author wrote about us. I am outraged that she stereotyped my people. I will be writing a full discussion on my blog soon, then update this.

Holy alien apocalypse Wendy Higgins, what have you done to me?? I spent most of the night wide awake, thinking about this story.

Between the non-stop angst of teenage unrequited love and the worry about impending world doom, I was a mess reading this! It’s a cross between War of the Worlds, Red Dawn (the one with Patrick Swayze) and Signs. All movies I’ve loved, but that stressed the crap out me out as well.

Small town America. The Tate family sticks together. The care and backstory that went into creating this multi-generational family made me smile. They are so pure, loving, supportive, and genuine with each other. I LOVED this family. If this fictional world wasn’t so awful, I’d want them to adopt me.

The story centers on Amber, her older brother, Tater, and his best friend and neighbor, Rylen. I went in blind and I think it’s the best way to read this book. I would label this as new adult, sci-fi, apocalypse. It’s slow to start, lulling you into believing everything is juuuust fine, then it yanks the carpet out from under you and takes off.

This isn’t a light and fluffy read. It’s heartbreaking, gritty, and horrific. But it’s also funny, full of family love, best friendships, and coming of age angst. My only complaint is the drama surrounding the ‘love’ story. I was so irritated at one of the characters for being SUCH a complete wimp about his feelings and making a young women chase him. Repeatedly! How many hints and letters, and hearts-in-her-eyes-every-time-she-sees-you did you not understand??! Then he

This is one of the most original apocalypse stories I’ve ever read. I’m so impressed with the way the author set-up and build this world. There is a mystery as to what is happening, misdirection, mass confusion and shifting the blame so that everyone is suspicious of each other. HUGE thanks goes to my friend Tanya who recommended this one to me!

Stars: ⭐ 4.0 ⭐

Main characters:
- Amber:❣️❣️❣️❣️
- Rylen: ❣️❣️❣️❣️
- Remy:❣️❣️❣️❣️
-Tater:❣️❣️❣️❣️

POV: The story is told only from Amber's POV (for now)

Writing: ✍️✍️✍️✍️ This book is more about how the apocalypse began and how everyone met, grew up and became what they are in the next books. I really liked that.

Romance: In this one we have unrequited love story between Amber and Ry, and one night stand between Remy and Tater (later slow-burn kind of romance). Ry and Tate are soldiers, so it's also a military romance.

Chemistry: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

OW/OM drama: Yes, but mild for my taste. They were dated other through those years. They were mostly all apart. Ry an Tater were in army, Amber and Remy were students and they all had their careers later.

Love triangle: No

Cheating: No

Triggers: Alien invasion, virus, bombing and loss of family and wife in front of main characters

Funny moments: A few

Sad moments: Yes

Favorite characters: Everyone. Yes, you read that right. The main characters, the family and later their knew friends...

The ending: We don't know yet... Next book

♪♫My Pick For Book Theme Song♫♪
Hanging By A Moment by Lifehouse --One of my all time favorite songs…feels just right for Amber and Rylen and also for the overall feel of the story.♫

⇝My Thoughts⇜

This book…wow, I loved this book and I am desperately wanting to read book 2 and I think it's killing my chances of liking anything else (book wise), lately. I just don't want to read it quite yet, because book 3 doesn't come out until November. I'm trying space them out…

This is my first book by Wendy Higgins, and I have to say I loved her superb writing, I loved that we were able to know Amber and Rylen's back story, from when they were kids, up to the day that everything went to hell… and wow, it's an intense ride. This reminded me of another similar series by Paige Weaver, her Promise Me Series. I might like this series even more, though…I guess I'll have to wait and see…

Amber has grown up dealing with the knowledge that Rylen Fite, her brother’s best friend in the world, would never look at her as anything but his best friends little sister.

Growing up in their small Nevada town, she has done a good job of hiding her feelings, but it’s getting harder and harder to do. Then something happens and the country is at war with an unknown entity. Bombs go off all around the US and all, save one elected leader, is killed. What happens when leadership is gone and things like food and water and medical care are compromised and technology and communication won’t work? These are the things that Amber and her family have to deal with.

But they also have to figure out who is behind the attacks.

Now, this states that this series is New Adult, which had me hugely excited… but to be honest this read like a YA book. I guess the NA is reflective of the character’s ages rather than the content but I went in expecting one thing and got something different. That said, the UST between Rylen and Amber is crazy from beginning to end and I hope we’ll see more on that front in the coming books in the series.

I think that there should be more books that have to do with invasions. I’ve read a few books and have loved them, and this one was just compulsively readable! Not only are the characters interesting, but the story is just intriguing! This rag-tag group of people trying to do whatever they can to survive is just so well done.

The different character dynamics are very interesting… and it was refreshing to see a diverse family featured in this story.

I’m definitely looking forward to book 2 in this series and If you’re looking for an action packed story with an incredibly intriguing story, then pick this one up as soon as possible.

4.5 Stars!

This is a portion of my email [edited to remove spoilers] to Wendy upon finishing the book--which I read in a short amount of time. I couldn't put it down!

"I finished UNKNOWN, and I'm going to need Book Two like yesterday, okay? Thanks.

I really enjoyed the story, especially the old school Red Dawn vibe it had going on! I still remember how scared I was to go to school after watching that movie, convinced enemy soldiers were going parachute onto the playground and take me hostage.

I liked how opening chapters laid the groundwork for the series and wasn't simply a bunch of flashbacks. I never felt like I was confused about what was going on or where I was in the timeline. I loved Amber and Rylen, and her family is the best! It was nice to see a diverse, multi-generational family under one roof.

The camping scene made me laugh!

I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!"

In this first installment, action, tension and relationships take center stage, which adds a layer of authenticity to the overall story. Don't get me wrong, I love kissing and everything else that goes along with romance, and it's there simmering below the surface, but the world is literally falling down around these characters. They're focused on survival, as they should be.

A fast-paced, action packed start to what's sure to be an epic love story. READ IT!

This book ... so disturbingly timely. The beginning chaps provide a character study so the reader feels as if they share Amber and Rylen's pasts and know their flaws, motivations, and strengths intimately. They're authentic and sympathetic -- people who might live down the street.

Two of my favorite things about the story:

(1) It's not all about the romance. It's there (complete with sexy-hot tension and painful misunderstandings), simmering in the background or making an appearance in quiet moments, but by a third of the way in, the action/ apocalyptic scenes take precedence because the world starts falling down around everyone.

(2) The heroes aren't special snowflakes or ready-made. They're everyday guys and girls who step up in spite of personal fears and losses, and grow into their own by the end of the book. I can't wait to see what they'll accomplish in part 2!

Great concept but the plotting was terrible. I do understand the need for backstory, but too much of one bogged this story down tremendously. DNF
