Miranda MacDonnell is on the run. When she inherited a mysterious relic from her mother, she had no idea the dangers it would bring. Now hunted by a relentless foe who will stop at nothing to find her, she has one choice: stow away on the ship of the notorious privateer, Black Hawk.
Rob Hawkins, the half-English privateer known as Black Hawk, has a mission from the Tudor king to find and kill the rogue commander, Sir Ralph Evers. To complete his quest, Hawk must find Miranda, a young woman Evers is pursuing. Caught in a tempest, he is shipwrecked with a "boy" who demonstrates an uncanny ability for saving him. Cast away on the mysterious Isle of the Dead, Hawk realizes that the "boy" traveling with him is actually Miranda MacDonnell and having her means that Evers will come to him. What begins as a ploy —using her as bait—soon changes, however, as he falls in love with her.
Ancient forces are at work, drawing the four possessors of the relic’s power to the Isle of the Dead in the Outer Hebrides for a final battle where good must overcome the forces of evil in this spectacular finale to the Scottish Relic Trilogy.

'Tempest in the Highlands' by May McGoldrick is book three in "The Scottish Relic Trilogy". This is the story of Miranda MacDonnell and Rob Hawkins AKA Black Hawk. I have read the previous books but feel this is a standalone book. The other couples do make an appearance to help take Sir Evers down. Miranda has been helping her mother who had the 'sight' to see things in the future. But her mother saw that Miranda was now in danger. and made her leave her home. Miranda's mother and father was killed just days after she left. Once her mother died the gift of 'sight' was past to Miranda. Miranda is on a mission to find her twin brother and to try to stay alive. Sir Ralph Evers is out to kill her and get her powers. . Hawk has been set to find Miranda who he thinks will help him lead him to Sir Ralph Evers who he is to kill per Tudor king. Miranda takes to cut her hair and take on the life of a boy on Hawks ship to use it to transport her to where her brother is. But the ship runs into a story and Miranda ends up saving Hawk. At first Hawk thought Miranda was a boy but shortly learned who she was. This starts their journey in finding love and taking Sir Evers down. Very exciting, funny and so enjoyable. "My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read."
This review was originally posted on Addicted To RomanceSummary Miranda McDonnell is forced to flee and go on the run with her mother's precious relic with her and the curse that comes along with it, horrible visions of the future. She stows away on a privateer's ship "Black Hawk" and poses as a boy. But when a terrible storm hits the ship and Rob Hawkins, the Captain also known as the Black Hawk is thrown overboard, she goes after him. They both end up on a deserted island and Miranda knows that she needs to keep up the pretense of her disguise, because if he discovers the truth than she might not be able to save him in the future. Rob Hawkins, has lived his life at his own pleasure, doing what needs to be done to get out of his fathers thumb and carve his own path in life. What he never expected was a boy saving his life multiple times, or that he would discover the "boy" true secret and fall in love with her Plot and Story Line Tempest of the Highlands continues off from where book 2 ended. Our two couples are on the search for the missing piece, the relic that will tie everything and all of them together. It starts off with the attack on Miranda's home, and being forced to flee. Miranda has always had special "gifts" and has felt fear and sacrifice all of her life. She is being hunted and so she disguises herself. This was a short and quick read, you could easily read it in one sitting. I really like that all three books are tied together, and in Tempest Of The Highlands, it brings it all together and the pieces just fall into place. I did feel like the romance felt a bit too rushed at times. Which makes sense since it didn't feel the length of a full novel. But everything else was simply fantastic. We have a plot that is exciting, keeps you on edge, and has plenty of mystery and magical tones that keeps the reader in suspense. The way that Miranda and Rob join forces together was fantastic, and this story was a whirlwind of adventure, mystery and danger. This couple writing pair certainly knows how to write a story to entertain.
I love you more than it's imaginable to love any person
The Cover I really like the white roses at the center...so classically pretty and looks well with the blue plaid behind them. Overall View Tempest In The Highlands is a romance that has twists of adventure, magic and love....keep you thrilled till the end!!
*I received an eARC from NetGalley and the publisher and am voluntarily leaving a review*
There is only one word that comes to mind when I think about this book: WOW!
After reading the first two books, I was expecting a big finish and Team McGoldrick did not disappoint! This book was fantastic!
Miranda has inherited a piece of the tablet from her mother and has fled her home as a result of a vision her mother had. She knows her mother has passed because the gift of sight has been passed to her. Before Miranda left home, her mother told her of her twin brother, Gavin and also told her that Rob Hawkins aka Hawk is part of her destiny and that she should seek him out.
Miranda stows away on Hawk's ship disguised as a boy. She knows that Hawk is important to her future and will help reunite her with her brother - but she trusts no one with her secrets.
Miranda has a vision of Hawk dying and knows she must save him, so when he is swept overboard during a storm, she dives in after him. They wash up on a seemingly deserted island and have to work together to survive. Miranda struggles to hide her identity and the two have some very amusing conversations while Hawk still believes that Miranda is a boy. When he finds out the truth, he continues to pretend that he is not aware of her gender and even more amusing conversations follow. When he finally reveals that he knows the truth, Miranda tells him part of her secret. He agrees to help her and the friendship they formed begins to deepen. It did seem like they fell in love a bit too fast - but given the "magical" feel of this book, I was able to overlook and accept this turn of events with barely a raised brow :) Rob knows that Miranda is the woman he wants to spend the rest of his life with and Miranda hopes that they can have that future, but unfortunately, her visions seem to make that future very unlikely.
Meanwhile - Evers (the villain) is on the hunt for the last stone and captures Miranda's brother in an attempt to lure her to him. He is not aware that she is stranded on an island when he takes her brother - but soon learns of her location and sets out after her. At the same time, Innes, Connell, Alexander and Kenna have also been looking for Miranda and end up on the island.
When the truth of why they all end up on the island is revealed, they must all work together to stop Evers and restore the tablet. Hawk had a hard time believing Miranda's confession about her gift and that was further tested when he is dragged into the final confrontation.
I found part of the ending a little anti-climatic, but for the most part, it was perfect.
This book was well written, moved at a fast pace, had a lot of action, life and death moments, a giant, a couple of warm love scenes, it had a more paranormal/magical feel than the previous books and finally had a wonderful HEA.
I would highly recommend this book, but I would strongly urge you to read this series in order!
Just a note for the authors: I hope you are planning a book for Gavin!!!
I need to begin this review by saying, “It’s likely just me, folks, and hopefully not going to be you.” As book 3 of this series, Tempest in the Highlands started off with a Robinson Crusoe type feel eventually evolving into an Indiana Jones backdrop with a touch of Lord of the Rings. As I’ve never been a big fan of Temple of Doom type action drama, I found myself not overly wild about how this storyline eventually wrapped up. Rob and Miranda made a likable main couple, but they weren’t particularly that engaging to me, as well.
Though I loved Miranda’s sweet, takes charge/keeps those around her safe, and her special paranormal gift of seeing the future, I tend to resent a book where the beautiful heroine ends up dressing like a lad, chopping off what was once likely beautiful locks of flowing hair, and thereby supposedly, somehow amazingly, fooling everyone into thinking they are a boy. Sure, I try to overlook it, but ultimately I find I rather kind of resent it. Likely because, well, I don’t find that type of situation to be very realistic or even probable.
Overall, I found Rob, the hero, to be just a nice guy, who ironically is the English king’s secret hired killer. Even though I eventually got his full story, I didn’t find his character that captivating. Heroic? Sure, but not nearly as engaging as the heroes in the previous books.
As the final book, it is understandable that time is spent on relic resolution and all the previous characters rallying together to bring this storyline to its conclusion. Since it has been quite a few books ago I first met them, they mostly felt like strangers, instead of re-acquaintances. No, I’m not sure exactly why. The dramatic scenes near the end felt rather mechanical and dialog almost sing-songy at times.
What’s the passion meter on this one? Their first kiss at 52% is brought on by a dangerous situation. At 60% Rob realizes he loves her. Trying to survive dangerous situations one after another didn’t leave much time for intimacy, folks. But even then, Rob, was once again, a nice guy, who respected the heroine and didn’t want to take advantage of her under their dire circumstances. Yes, they do become a couple in the biblical sense, but there are not a lot of steamy scenes.
In conclusion, I needed to read this book, because I did want to know how everything got resolved. The delivery of the story, however, just wasn’t as enjoyable for me as the other two books.
Title: Tempest in the Highlands, Series: The Scottish Relic Trilogy, Author: May McGoldrick, Pages: NL, stand-alone but part of a series, HIGHLY suggest you read the books in order, touch of English vs Scottish sentiment, reluctant to trust each other at first, heroine has gift of seeing the future.

All I can say is WOW!!! I was looking for a whiz-bang wrap up for this series and the authors definitely delivered. One of my hallmark signs for an outstanding book is that the authors make me suspend all beliefs and totally buy-in to the story - and - manage to make me wonder if everything will turn out as it should. You see, I can know in my head that things will work out because, after all, I'm reading a historical romance and they always have HEA's - but - a really good author should be able to make me wonder if it will really happen. Well -- this book met all of those criteria.
This book focuses on the two lead characters, especially the lead female and tells their story. Not just the romance, which was good because they had plenty of time together for it to really feel like they had time to actually come to those feelings rather than having 'insta-lust' as in so many romance books. You'll really learn to like both the hero and heroine. There are also cameo roles for the previous heroes and heroines from the first two books.
Miranda MacDonnell had always known of her mothers 'gift' and had always worked to help her mother bring about good things for their clan by using that 'gift'. All that in spite of a really low-life father. I guess that is one thing that sort of bugged me -- if the mother had the gift of telling the future, why could she not see what sort of man the father was before she married him. However, I guess if that had happened, we wouldn't have this great book.
Miranda's mother is terminally ill and sees what is coming for her daughter. So, she prepares Miranda by having her leave the village and take the stone with her. She tells her daughter about Hawk and tells her that their futures are linked. Thus begins Miranda's adventure and romance.
Rob Hawkins, Black Hawk or Hawk, is a half-English privateer who has been tasked by the king to find and kill Sir Evers who is the bad guy throughout the entire series. Hawk is in total disagreement with his father in almost all things and wants to make his own way and his own fortune. This task should make that happen for him.
Hawk learns that the way to get Evers is through Miranda - all he has to do is find her. He learns where she may be heading and heads his ship in that direction. Little does he know that Miranda has stowed away on his ship!
I'm not going to tell the rest of the story and spoil it for you.
The story is fast paced, suspenseful, well written, and is full of action. Also -- you get a giant, a red-bearded Celtic priest and an old woman all in white and magical, mystical endings. I wasn't happy with parts of the solution -- A little too quick -- and I didn't like that
I highly recommend the entire series and also highly recommend that you read it in order. It is a very well done series and I'm sorry to see it end.
"I requested and received this book from the author at no cost to me and volunteered to read it; my review is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher."
Tempest in the Highlands was an adventurous and satisfying end to The Scottish Relic trilogy. I thought the characters were enjoyable and that the plot was exciting. This was a nice way to wrap up this trilogy!
I am a HUGE fan of books when girls dress up as a male to achieve their goals. I find those plot lines to be so exciting, fun, and addictive. I think it stems from my love for Mulan , because the girls who typically pull a stunt like that are bad-asses. Miranda, the main female character, was no exception to that rule. Miranda had a sharp tongue and would stand up for herself. I really liked how she wouldn't let people push her around because she appeared smaller and weaker than everyone else. Miranda had a strong mind, and I appreciated that.
The main male lead, Rob, was very dreamy. I thought he was funny and sexy! I was actually surprised at how nice he was. I was expecting Rob to be rougher around the edges! It was nice to have a really sweet guy when he had such a tough looking exterior.
The romance was passionate in this book! I thought the pacing of the relationship between Rob and Miranda was very believable in the beginning of the book. Their relationship felt natural and slow paced. When they finally kissed, I thought the timing was appropriate. However, I thought they jumped into the "I love you"s too quickly, which was the same issue I had with the previous book. The romance was progressing nicely and then I felt like it was all rushed towards the end. I would have enjoyed the romance more if we got an epilogue at the end and that was the first time they said: "I love you". However, I thought the romantic moments themselves were well written and steamy.
The plot of this book was interesting and exciting! There were some parts that felt rushed and some parts felt a little slow, but I thought the book was well paced as a whole. The magical elements that were weaved into this story were interesting and unique. The description of the scenery was great too. I just want to go to Scotland now! Overall, this was a fun and addictive read. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting a historical romance with magical elements.
3.5 / 5 Fangs
*This ebook was given to me in exchange for an honest review. *
Miranda MacDonnell has always been aware of her mother’s gift and what it entails. The visions her mother experienced enabled her to avert disasters and now, as her health fails completely, she passes the relic to her daughter. Miranda is persuaded to flee her home due to premonitions of great danger and she takes the fourth piece of the relic with her. She has to find her twin brother, Gavin, given away at birth in order to save his life, and stay out of the clutches of Sir Ralph Evers to save her own life.
Privateer, Rob Hawkins also known as Black Hawk, is under orders from the English king to find and kill Evers, now classed as a rogue commander. Following Evers’ trail of destruction, he is looking for Miranda knowing Evers will be in close pursuit. Her mother foretold that Miranda’s fate would be intertwined with Hawk’s, so Miranda, in disguise, manages to get herself aboard Hawk’s ship as a kitchen boy.
Girls masquerading as boys and not getting found out, especially on a ship full of rough seamen in close contact with each other, isn’t my favourite plot device. I enjoyed this story much more once Hawk knew who Miranda really was. She is an engaging character as herself and her efforts on the Isle of the Dead to save Hawk from the fate she saw in her visions shows her determination and strength of character.
Miranda and Hawk are the antithesis of each other in the their beliefs. Hawk can’t grasp, much less believe, the details of Miranda’s extraordinary life, the mysticism, the gift she has and her faith in the tablet. He trusts only in what he can see and touch. The contrast between them both worked well.
Events and forces of nature conspire to bring Innes, Conall, Kenna and Alexander to the island to join up with Miranda and Hawk. I enjoyed the mystic/paranormal aspect of the story very much, and the characters Miranda and Hawk found on the island. The scenic descriptions are as vivid as previously.
Saskia Maarleveld did a great job with the narration and I’m glad I listened to the series. It was very entertaining, I wanted to know how the story was resolved, and the complete history of the relic. The ending was fitting, if just a little on anti climactic side.
I chose to listen to and review Much Ado About Highlanders based on an audio copy of the book supplied by Macmillan Audio.
Tempest in the Highlands is a great book that I received a free copy of from St. Martin's via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I have never been a pirate story reader. This actually might be my first. Technically, Hawk is not a pirate, but, to the eyes of those in the world he appears to be a pirate, but, he is so much more. He reads like a tough, great-looking, ethical man who secretly works for the King of England, who is up to his neck in fighting wars on all fronts. One of his commanders has gone rogue and the King has sent Hawk to bring him down, permanently. Hawk is following Evers' trail and lands in Scotland where Evers has just left a village in death and destruction, including killing the laird of the village. He is searching for the daughter of the laird, Miranda, who is missing.
Miranda has managed to stay a couple of steps ahead of Evers, however, Evers has a skill that is leading him right to Miranda who has managed to escape by stowing away on Hawk's ship disguised as a boy. Hawk is following the one person who is a lot closer than he thought. The weather changes and after the ship is damaged Hawk and Miranda are castaways on a deserted island. Evers is closing in and now has the one thing that Miranda wants more than anything and he will force her to choose. It turns out that there is more to the island they have landed on and more than Evers will be present since something has drawn everyone to the island. My favorite part of this story were the conversations between Miranda and Hawk when she was not aware he had determined she was not a boy. Miranda comes up with some hilarious answers to questions she couldn't possibly know the answer to since she is really not a boy. The story was written with rich characters and a great plot. I was not aware of the first two books and I was glad to see that I could jump right in and still understand everything without having read the first two books. I do plan to go back and take a look at those because this is a great story. Review and book blast can be seen at LadyTechie's Book Musings http://LadyTechiesBookMusings.blogspo... .
This is the last book of the Scottish Relic Trilogy. It was a fantastic read for fans of highland romance. The author has written a beautiful story of two people who were destined to meet. I just love this series but can be read as a stand alone. The characters were well developed with thought and feelings of their own. I truly enjoyed this from beginning to end. It was over the top with adventure, paranormal and of course romance. Miranda has kind of inherited the stone her mother had given her when she died. Miranda has always helped her mom and taken care the ideals that whe grew up with. Now Miranda has seen the future in which she has stowed away on a ship because of a man who wants the stone for his own purposes. Miranda is now dressed as a boy who helps the cook aboard the ship without anyone being the wiser. Captain Hawk is handsome man who is self assured and his crew are very loyal toe him. When a storm causes Hawk to be swept into the sea, Miranda goes after him and saves his life. They swim to a deserted island and start to survive while beginning to become kinda friends. One day Hawk discovers that Miranda is a woman and well things get complicated after that. Hawk confronts her and she finally shares her secret. The future tells her that Hawk is the man who will be her destiny. He is not really sure of Miranda's knowing things, and she knows what will happen if he doesn't believe. Unknown to both of them Evers the evil man who wants the last stone will become their downfall, He wants the power to control his world and will kill to get it. Miranda and Hawk attraction blossoms to love, but will it help them to overcome the man? Miranda also wants to save her twin brother who is being held captive by the man who wants the stone. You will just have to read this exciting book and find out if Hawk and Miranda will have their happy ever after. I appreciate Net Galley for this ARC title in which I gave an honest review.
Last and final book of this trilogy of the relics that I liked and suggest to read if you are interested in Old curses, premonitions, relics and druids. This time the two characters were stranded on a magic island and they were good enough not to make the story sleep into boredom, so my praise to the author.
This is the final episode in the series, and for me it is the best. It works as a stand alone, but if you get the chance, reading the earlier books will make you enjoy this one even more.
Miranda has inherited a relic from her late mother. It gives her sight into the future. Her mother used the gift to prevent bad things from happening to the people around her. Now Miranda has been given the same gift. She has also learned that she has a twin brother who was sent away when they were infants. The baby, Gavin, was sent away to prevent his father from killing him.
There are 3 other small relics which are a part of an ancient wheel. The other 3 parts have been gathered together by Sir Ralph Evers. He is an Englishman who has decided to combine the relics and become the most powerful man on earth. He has been willing to kill anyone who got in his way. Havoc has followed him across Scotland.
In order to escape being murdered, Miranda's mother sent her on a quest to find her brother. Miranda has hidden away on the ship, Peregrine. The ship is owned by Rob Hawkins, The Hawk. When the ship is tossed around by a huge storm, Miranda and Rob are thrown overboard. They eventually wash up on the shores of The Isle of The Dead.
This book has one adventure after another. Miranda and Rob are regularly put into danger and they come through each event stronger and more united.
Miranda and Rob are strong, brave and intelligent characters. Both of them make the reader turn pages in order to see what happens next. Miranda is a young woman who is willing to do nearly anything to complete her journey. Rob is more happy-go-lucky and his humor continually lifts Miranda's spirits.
The plot is entertaining and all the threads from the previous books in the series are brought together. Questions are answered and we get to see the outcome for the characters who were previous heroes and heroines.
This book does a wonderful job completing the trilogy.
I received this book from the publisher through NetGalley in the hope that I would write a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.
~An ARC was given to be by the publisher and was made available via NetGalley. ~
This is the last book of The Scottish Relic Trilogy, and this is one good ending for me.
A healer, a psychometric, and a seer, then a person one that can communicate with the dead. Four pieces of relic, when combined, grants the holder a power like no other.
A fascinating, and a well-rounded story, set in a timeline where people are afraid of the things they do not understand. For me, it is hard to manipulate if you are on the 1500 timeline. People are afraid and most of them would condemn people who have abilities, like the characters in this series. And yet, I find myself fascinated on how this was made.
We have a basic theme, and three individual personal problem per character. It should be overwhelming, but it wasn’t. The last book fixed it.
I like Miranda. Her spirit and the way her personality was created. The way she did her best to save Rob because their fate was interconnected was full of hardship. Rob on the other hand, well, he is an assassin of the crown so, there is much to tell. However, I like how he was trying to understand what is happening and doing his best to survive for the both of them. Being in the marooned in the island where the Relic is supposed to be destroyed, I am amaze of his trust on Miranda.
The appearance of the rest of the previous people on boo one and two also helped with me liking the book. The conclusion of the book was really good and it did not leave any stone un-turned. I am happy that I was able to read this series. I have my reservations, but as I progress in each book, I am captivated on the world the author has written.
The final book of the Scottish Relic Trilogy hits a 5 STAR repeat home run! Making that 5 stars for each book of this series. This husband and wife team continually amaze me with exceptionally well written stories of danger, vivid descriptions, mysticism, shattered families and the ultimate love.
Once again the authors created a quick moving plot that moves the readers through Rob and Miranda's meeting and subsequent chain of events to the dramatic conclusion of this series. This book brings the other couples from the previous two books into the story as well. There were times in this book that I had to laugh and times I felt sad and wanted to cry but overall this book is about being willing to die to do the right thing and to protect the one you love.
Miranda's character was very impressive and I found her being fearless while being afraid caused me to think that I needed to be more like her. She is my idea of a heroine and throughout the book there are continual examples of this in a very believable manner.
The male hero , Rob, was just perfect. I mean it perfect. He was a good leader, resourceful, handsome, and dedicated. As a nonbeliever of mysticism he continued to protect Miranda the best he could.
Of all the books to this series this book for me had the most mysticism that just made this series work for me in the most spectacular way. I advise that you read the books in order so you can understand the evil villain, brutal Sir Ralph Evers from Much Ado About Highlanders book #1 of this series who is the master evil one in every book to this series.
I give this 5 STARS for the enjoyable interplay between Rob and Miranda and how the authors ended this series.
Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.
I really loved this captivating and highly enjoyable last book in the Scottish Relic Series by May McGoldrick. Historical Romance books by May McGoldrick are those that I buy without even looking at the blurb because up to now they have never disappointed me.
Once again the hero and the heroine were wonderful, well developed, very likeable and also very interesting. Especially the contrast between Miranda whose life has always been dominated by the unexplainable, the mystic and Rob who doesn't believe in anything that he can't touch makes them an interesting couple, even more whn Miranda has to draw on all of her definitely not touchable and inexplainable knowledge of the future to try to keep Rob alive and well. Easier said than done, obviously, with a man like him and of course with all those enemies around. Not very healthy surroundings for a man like Rob. Alas, Evers is still searching for the other relics and uses all of his power to find Miranda so it is not only Rob who is in danger. Evers…everybody who has read the other books of the series won't have forgotten him. His search for the other parts of the Wheel of Lugh is intense and brutal. He won't give up till he has found them all. Will Miranda, Innes and Kenna be able to protect their powers and stop Evers?
A wonderful book and an amazing finale to another great series by May McGoldrick, I'm already looking forward to future books by these great authors!
I must say that all three stories in this series have had a fast pace to it, but somehow this one was even faster, or it might be just me. I feel that this one was a bit more adventures, or maybe that was because much of the action takes place on a ship and an island. Regardless, I enjoyed the suspense and action it offered, as well as the romance.
As the previous two stories, this one also focuses mainly on the hero and heroine, while it features once more a special “gift’ of our heroine.
If you love men in kilts, strong and smart heroines that are blessed with certain “gifts”, and enjoy fast paced stories of the Highlands, these books are just for you.
I highly recommend this entire series, but do recommend you read it in order. Trust me, you’ll enjoy it more.
Tempest in the Highlands, book three and the final chapter in May McGoldrick’s Highland Relic series, is a page-turning delight! This story tells the tale of Miranda MacDonnell, the keeper of the last piece of the relic. Miranda, can see and change the future, but she cannot see her own. She only knows that her future is tied to Rob Hawkins, a privateer known as the Black Hawk. After stowing aboard Rob’s ship, they are caught in a storm, and swept overboard, only to be stranded on the Isle of the Dead. The Isle is where the epic showdown between good and evil will take place, and where Miranda will meet both Kenna and Innes the other keepers of the relic. This was a fabulous story, and Saskia Maarleveld does a fabulous job of narrating the audiobook.
Miranda’s inheritance from her mother has left her in great danger, pursued by a relentless enemy. Having few choices, she disguises herself as a boy and boards a privateer’s ship to flee. Rob, a privateer better known as the Black Hawk, has been tasked by the King to find the man, Sir Ralph Evers, and do away with him. It is known that Evers is seeking to gather the pieces of a relic, and the King will have no competition.
There’s a shipwreck, and Rob and Miranda are stranded on the Isle of the Dead before Rob discovers Miranda’s big secret. That’s only part of the story though, not only is she a girl, but he is attracted to her, and she’s being sought by Evers.
The plot twists and winds to bring earlier holders of relic pieces to the island as the final climactic scene is to be the showdown between the holders and the one who seeks to possess. But while the story was entertaining, there was something missing. Miranda as a heroine, aside from her foretelling ability was just rather lackluster, and she felt as if she was trying to be in control more than it was a part of her personality. And Rob just didn’t come off as anything more than a man with a mission. A rather ordinary man in my opinion. He just wasn’t as engaging as I expected or wanted from my first experience with this series.
Resolution could have been SO much more – but felt rather mechanical and while not forced, just without real ‘ooh’ moments. There were so many elements and questions when the relic pieces are reunited, as well as the interplay between the earlier characters that could have been expanded on, or developed to bring some surprise, passion, tension, even an aha moment….but it never came. I was disappointed in the resolution’s lack of emotional impact for me, I actually found myself trying to focus on the conclusion, a sure sign to me that integral elements are missing. I now know how the story ended, and wish this installment had lived up to the promise of the premise started two books ago.
I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility. This review was originally posted on I am, Indeed
Book Review- Tempest in the Highlands by May McGoldrick
Miranda has fled for her life. Her mother is now dead and her father invited an enemy into the castle. Evers killed her father and set ruin to the castle killing innocent people. He is now searching for Miranda. She has jumped on Blackhawk’s ship. She needs to get to Druart Castle. Her brother is there and she is determined to find him. Unfortunately a storm leaves Blackhawk and Miranda stranded on the Isle of the Dead. Blackhawk is determined to find any of his crew or parts of his ship that might have washed ashore. Miranda spends the time saving Blackhawk’s life and keeping up the ruse that she is a boy. When she comes face to face with a strange giant and has visions of an old woman and a druid, she knows her stone is the center of everything. Unbeknownst to both of them Evers is on his way to the island with a special passenger. Two other women and their husbands are also on their way. They are all being summoned to the island. There will be a final confrontation with Evers, Miranda knows she has to protect Blackhawk. Things take a turn when he learns who she really is and why she is on the island. They all have a part to play as destiny begins to show her hand. This book was full of intrigue. It started on a mysterious note full of danger as Miranda and her mother ran for their lives. The whole story is full of instances where Miranda is hiding and fighting for her life. She is smart and takes her gift in stride. She meets her match in Blackhawk. He doesn’t believe in her abilities. He only believes what he sees. They work together and make sacrifices. I like how the author has thrown them together. Their relationship forms quickly. I like how they had to come to trust each other. Blackhawk is an awesome hero. He provides humor as he teases Miranda at first. Then he became her protector. I really liked his alpha-male character with a bit more compromise when it came to Miranda. Evers, on the other hand, was truly evil. The author did a great job of creating the perfect villain. The fight scene at the end wasn’t what I expected. I expected more and a bit longer. Evers was so evil I expected more to his demise. The story was great. I give it a 4 out of 5.
Tempest in the Highlands is a thrilling conclusion to the Scottish Relic Trilogy by May McGoldrick. This entire series has everything that I look for in a good trilogy: an adventurous mystery, an intriguing historical romance, and a hint of the supernatural.
From the previous two books in the series, we know that three women are being hunted down by a rogue English commander who desires to obtain certain powers granted to those who possess fragments of an ancient stone tablet. Each relic confers a special gift and these relics have been passed down through generations. In each of the first two books, the commander forcibly obtained a relic for the gift of healing and for the gift for seeing into the past (the commander already possessed the gift of raising the dead when the series began). In Tempest in the Highlands, the commander is after the gift of seeing into the future, which is currently held by Miranda MacDonnell.
The story begins with Miranda running for her life after her village is destroyed; the commander killed most of its residents, including her father. Miranda stows-away as a kitchen boy on the ship of privateer Rob Hawkins after her mother foresees her life with him on her deathbed. The ship is soon destroyed in a tempest, and Miranda saves Rob's life after he is knocked unconscious. While stranded on the Isle of the Dead, she saves his life a few more times before he realizes there just might be something mystical about that relic she possesses. And of course, they have an undeniable attraction toward each other. :)
As an added bonus, the main characters from the previous two books make an appearance at the end of this book with great effect. The trilogy goes full circle in this story with a couple of druid protectors philosophizing along the way. The finale is so well written and moving that I challenge anyone NOT to shed a tear or two.
Saskia Maarleveld is a gifted narrator and I'm extremely pleased that she narrated the entire series. Her narration is simply wonderful providing each character their own distinct voice. I highly recommend Tempest in the Highlands and the entire series!
The final book in a trilogy dealing with ancient stones that give their bearers the power to heal, see the past, and see the future. In this novel we meet Miranda MacDonnell and Rob Hawkins. Miranda has spent her life helping her mother with her visions of the future. When her mother tells her she must leave in order to save her own live Miranda knows she will be soon be the bearer of the stone. Before she leaves her mother tells her she must find Black Hawk as their destinies are tied together. So when Rob "Black Hawk" Hawkins shows up shortly after the slaughter of her people, she stows away on his ship disguised as a boy.
Rob is searching for Sir Ralph Evers. He has been tasked to stopping the man from his reign of terror through the highlands. Half English and half Scots, he is appalled to see the destruction left behind by Evers. It is said that Evers is searching for Miranda MacDonnell the daughter of the recently killed Laird MacDonnell. If he can find her maybe Evers will come to him.
When a freak storm hits his boat while at sea, he finds himself washed overboard and saved by a slip of a boy. When they wash ashore they find themselves on the Isle of the Dead. Now as the two search for survivors or a way of the island they must face dangers from a giant man that means them harm. When Hawk realizes that his traveling companion is actually a woman, and that she is Miranda he finds himself drawn to her like no other.
Miranda has to find a way to save not only Hawk, but herself and her brother as well. She knws she has been brought to this island by fate and that the decisions she makes could result in not only Hawk's death but her own as well. In order to save him she must convince him that magic does exist or they are both doomed.
This book, third and last in the series, had a trope that we all love. The heroine pretending to be a boy in order to actively participate in her own destiny.
Miranda was on the run from the Englishman Ralph Evers, who was using his position of power to be able to ruthlessly hunt down all the others who had pieces of the stone that gave them special powers. Escaping by boat only led to her being shipwrecked with Rob Hawkins, the notorious Black Hawk privateer. Fortunately, her disguise as a young man kept her safe for quite a while, until Rob discovered the truth.
Would he help her? Unbeknownst to her, Rob is on a mission from the English King to find and destroy Ralph Evers, so being with her ensures that they will eventually meet up. Of course, as fate would have it, they become romantically involved and so Rob’s desire to protect her from Evers gets stronger, and his desire to end Evers also gets stronger.
As the other stone-keepers and their partners gathered with Miranda and Rob, Ralph Evers grows nearer and nearer. Can they keep him from getting the last part and using the full tablet to resurrect a dark magic that would harm the entire world?
These books are very interesting and the romantic element is always enjoyable. However, by the time I got to this I was pretty much done. Maybe if I’d read them closer together? Might have helped. I had just lost the urgency to finish the series. Otherwise, it was a good read. If you enjoy Scottish tales with some spooky or magical qualities, I think you’d really like this series and this book. Thanks!
Miranda MacDonnell has the gift of sight after the death of her parents. Trying to stay one step ahead of the killer, she disguises herself as a boy and stows away on privateer’s ship. Rob Hawkins, known as Black Hawk has been ordered to hunt down Ralph Evers. He knows that Evers is after Miranda and plans to find her to catch him. But the last thing he expected was for Miranda to be on his ship. Then a shipwreck leaves them on the Isle of the Dead, which is where the tablet can be destroyed.
Miranda tried to control the different situations that she finds herself in due to her sight. She tries hard to protect others especially Rob when she learns of their connection. Rob is a strong man yet is very caring for Miranda. I loved how the two of them interacted, especially when Miranda was dressed up like a boy.
Then there is the tablet. Everyone from the last two books along with Miranda and Rob are on this island to destroy the tablet. It was great coming back to these couples and finally defeating Evers. I admit that I was left a little disappointed since there were many questions that had been left open through the series that didn’t really get answered.
I really enjoyed this series. Saskia Maarleveld does an amazing job narrating the story. Over all I would say if you like highlander romances that you should check out this book and the rest of the series.
I received The Scottish Relic Trilogy from the publisher for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of these books.
Miranda MacDonnell inherits a Scottish relic from her mother that endows her with visions of the future. Power-hungry Englishman Sir Ralph Evers plans to kill Miranda, confiscate her relic, and use its gift of clairvoyance. Desperate to escape Evers’s clutches, Miranda dresses like a boy and steals onto the ship of English pirate Rob Hawkins, known on the seas as Black Hawk. Both Miranda and Rob end up shipwrecked on the mythical Isle of the Dead, where peril lies around every corner. While Miranda learns to trust Rob as she trusts her visions, Rob must let go of reason and embrace the impossible if they are to stop Evers from acquiring the relics and the incredible abilities they bestow.
Verdict Author team Nikoo and Jim McGoldrick (Taming the Highlander) maintain a breakneck pace with plenty of action, suspense, and magical elements. The romance is slow to start as Miranda spends time masquerading as a boy, but heat builds by the end. Characters from previous titles in the trilogy play integral roles, so readers should start with the first episode, Much Ado About Highlanders.
Miranda MacDonnell had always known of her mother’s 'gift and that one day she would inherit it, but she did not know is she would be running for her life. She’s has the last stone the evil villain, brutal Sir Ralph Evers from the first book in the series, Much Ado About Highlanders. Sir Ralph is the master evil one in every book to this series. To gain each person’s power he must steal their stone. Miranda has recently learned she had a twin in which her mother sent her to find her brother. Her mother also tells her that her future is linked with Rob Hawkins. Rob, Black Hawk is a half-English privateer who wants to make his own way and not depend on his English father. Hawk has been tasked by the king to find and kill Sir Evers. Miranda stows away on Black Hawks ship, using her brother’s name Gavin. Hawk’s ship is hit by a horridness storm and he is swept overboard and Miranda dives in to save him and their both stranded on an island. Hawk eventually figures out Gavin is actually Miranda the runaway Laird’s daughter that Sir Ralph is searching for. The interplay between Miranda and Hawk was witty, funny and a great ending to the series. I received an ARC copy from Net Galley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review and opinion.
This was a wild adventure that I enjoyed thoroughly. I love a good adventure, which this book completely delivered. The interactions between the main characters was great. This book delivered! I can't’ wait to read more from this author. **I voluntarily read and reviewed this book
