RICHARD SCARRY is one of the world's best-loved children's authors EVER! In his extraordinary career, Scarry illustrated over 150 books, many of which have never been out of print. His books have sold over 100 million copies around the world, and are currently published in over twenty languages. No other illustrator has shown such a lively interest in the words and concepts of early childhood. Richard Scarry was posthumously awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Illustrators in 2012.
This storybooks makes a wonderful farewell gift for an inquisitive 5-year-old student. Full of action and colours, the stories sometimes goes beyond what we experience in our daily lives and it will definitely spark creativity in a preschooler!
Letto a 5 anni, rimane uno dei più bei classici per bambini ancora oggi! Formidabili avventure che in poche pagine sono capaci di far ridere un bimbo per ore.
This book lives up to its name. Each one of the short stories economically tells a full story, with Scarry's endearing illustrations and embedded humor. I'm amazed at how much Scarry can do with so much space. And while a book like this is designed to be read in short bursts, with each story taking less than 5 minutes, my daughter and I finished it in one sitting, laughing out loud as we finished the PIRATE story.
Compared to the other two Scarry books we read Best Lowly Worm Book Ever! and Best Nursery Tales Ever! The Funniest Storybook Ever takes the cake—or the cherry pie!
This may be my favorite Richard Scarry book, at least as an adult. The drawings are awesome! We had a lot of books but didn’t have his books when I was a child, as far as I recall. But I’d read one of them that a neighbor or relative had, and *loved* how much seemed to be going on in all the pictures.
In this book I noticed that often words told a different story than the drawings (e.g., when Mr. Fixit “fixes” things, he breaks them; and a runaway car “came to a stop” in the kitchen=it crashed through the house and slammed into the oven).
This was a gift from Elijah's aunt, uncle and cousins. Okay, partly I just have very, very fond memories of reading many of these stories as a kid myself, so I am never bothered when Elijah wants to read it, but it helps that he focuses on three or four stories at a time and wants to read just those, and not the entire book, because it's pretty long! I had sort of forgotten how funny Richard Scarry books are until he got hooked on this one. Somewhere I'm pretty sure I have another collection of stories from my childhood days. I need to find that thing!
Read this to my great nephews (twins) so much fun they adored it and the illustrations alone kept them captivated. Came across about 4 of these Richard Scarry books for something like .10 cents apiece at a church rummage sale and bought all of them. Totally would have been worth $5 apiece. Can't wait to see the reactions from them on the next ones. Great for kids 3-6 ish!!
I disliked this book for the ridiculous stories which were just repetitive and boring as well as for the fact basically every main character was male (so I changed that as I read it). It gets an extra star, because for some inexplicable reason my 2yo loves it.
For a three year old, this indeed might be the funniest book ever but for a thirty year old, this was the busiest book ever!! There is so much going on and some of the animal’s 😐 faces were so hilarious to me. It’s the only book to have a comic sans font as well that I have come across.
This was a really fun read aloud that was entertaining for both me and my five year old. The illustrations were cute. And the combo of the words and illustrations made for a hilarious experience. Our favorite stories were Tanglefoot and Ma Pigs New Car.
Father Richard Scarry that my toddler adores but this one I don't understand quite as much. It is great if you want to get to know the characters in Richard scarry's world. But the stories are really not funny at all. They're Illogical and strange.
This is the most fun book ever. I think when I was a little little child I LOVED this book and I can see why.
Lowly is my favourite character with his little boot! The pigs really need to get a grip though they are going to kill somebody with their terrible driving. Yikes!!!!!
I had the opportunity to visit with a friend and check out a few boxes of children's books she had kept from her childhood and her son's. The books are quite old and many are out of print, so it was a wonderful chance to revisit with some stories I read when I was young and to discover others I'd never seen before.
Richard Scarry's books are classics. They have delightful illustrations that are full of color and movement; in fact, his page spreads are unlike other picture books. His have many busy scenes happening all at once. It might take a page or two before your eye and mind adjust.
And you don't really read Scarry's books for a story either. They're more discovery and exploration books - so make sure you have time to take it all in. Don't have an agenda with where each page will go, just enjoy soaking in what you see, even if you miss some stuff. Everything will be there for you to discover the next time!

Would be more accurately titled Richard Scarry's Most Mildly Amusing Storybook Ever! The ubiquitous mishaps in Scarry's scenes work great in the background but come across as more pitiful than funny when made the subject. I'd have given this one two stars, except that several of the stores warn of the dangers of distracted driving and walking, an exceptionally important lesson in these crazy days of driving on the phone and walking aimlessly while texting.
While my kid would like to give this 10 stars...if I have to read it ONE more time, I'm going to lose it. Maybe it's not that bad? I don't know, I've just totally OD'd on it. I'm exaggerating when I say I have read it 3 times a day for the last 5 months. I truly wish I never brought this book in my house.
This is definitely one of the funniest storybooks ever! I absolutely love Richard Scarry and although I know there's a TV series featuring these characters, it's just not the same as reading them in these books. I've read these stories hundreds of times and some of them have stayed with me since I was a kid. Richard Scarry was a genius!
We can't get enough of Sargent Murphy, Lowly, Big Hilda, and Flossie at the nightly Family Bedtime Storytime. I love Richard Scarry's work as much now as I did when I was the recipient of the nightly stories.
My dear little boy that I babysit loved this so much. We sat on the sofa and pointed out our favorite parts of the stories. He loved the cute and funny illustrations of the animal characters.
