Midnight Falls

Rate this book
Librarian Note: Alternate Cover Edition for ASIN: B015AIO6R4.

A shapeshifter who possesses magic shouldn’t exist—and some people want to keep it that way.

Sky has finally accepted that her life will never be simple again. As a werewolf who is a host to a powerful spirit shade, Sky has the ability to manipulate magic, among other things—and that means she has many enemies in the otherworld. In need of allies, Sky joins the Midwest Pack.

Being part of the pack is supposed to make things better. Instead, she is pulled into a clandestine world of strange politics, dark secrets, and hidden dangers. When Sky does a powerful spell to protect Ethan, the pack’s Beta, she is cursed by the Creed—the ruling body of the witches who will do anything to get rid of her.

Adding to the problems, the Midwest Pack becomes responsible for guarding the Clostra, a book of magic that everyone wants, including the Creed. In the wrong hands, it can destroy the otherworld and force a battle that no one can win.

When Sky meets a powerful and mysterious witch who claims he can make it all stop—the attacks, the rivalries, even Sky’s lycanthropy—she is enticed. But the help comes at a price—the betrayal of her pack.

Now Sky must choose—fight with the pack or betray them for her own safety.

McKenzie Hunter

McKenzie Hunter is the author of urban fantasy, dark fantasy, and paranormal romance books. She discovered early that new adventures were just a page-turn away; all she had to do was read a book. She’s had her share of escapades from hanging out with vamps, joining the chaos of shifter packs, creating spells with witches, and avoiding deals with the fae.

When she isn't working on her next book, she’s reading, binge-watching TV, or disappearing into her own world during nature walks (probably on the lookout for magical beings—or maybe not).

I can't do this series anymore. I cannot handle the main female character who cannot do anything right and is trying to end up with the emotionally abusive lead male character.

I really love this series from McKenzie Hunter . Our woman of the moment, despite all her abilities, is so very human, and it is ultimately her humanity that drives her to make some really unpopular decisions with alarming regularity.

The series launches with Skylar’s evolution from her background as a werewolf hidden in a contemporary world by her adoptive mother, through to the discovery of her magical abilities which seem to be of dubious origins. It is through this facet of Skylar’s life which thrusts her into a position she doesn’t want to be in. Life doesn’t offer her any positive choices and she becomes a victim of manipulation by others.
 photo wolfgirl_zpsusxfnmpj.jpg
Let’s face it, Skylar seems really good at putting her foot in it, tripping over her proverbial tongue. It is these choices which push Skylar in directions beyond her control, and her naivety rears its ugly head. Others claim she makes bad and dangerous choices that poorly reflect on the Midwest Pack. Her choices are frequently taken from with alarming regularity as she is manipulated once again.

The enigmatic and mysterious Quell takes a step back when Skylar's own choices don’t correspond to his own expectations, and things keep getting more complicated.

And need I mention Ethan, as his motives and interest remain a confusing issue for her. His own background and abilities become more obvious in this third novel, and draw the reader's interest in the series to a whole new level. His past lover Chris, continues to keep her life in their world as secretive as ever, and her vast amount of how-to and amazing insights into the immediate world surrounding them prove to be boundless.

The witches become a particular bane in Skylar’s life, as the quest for power amongst the magical community turns into a vicious race for the ultimate weapon. This is where the book develops and introduces more characters keeping up the reader's thirst for knowledge as the book injects new material.

I’m trying to keep all hints of spoilers from this review, whilst succinctly hinting at the secrets within Skylar’s world. Enter if you dare and live hand in hand with Skylar and the insurmountable confusion that drives her life…

OH. MY. GOODNESS.
These books are going to be the death of me. No, scractch that. McKenzie is going to be the death of me. That woman is cruel to me and my fangirl abilities. I mentioned in previous reviews that all of the male characters are intensely perfect candidates for Sky to be with but that I handed the reigns to McKenzie because shipping just one of them with her was too hard... but GAH!!!!
The main man I shipped Sky with from the very beginning is brutal and amazing and he was so close!! He is the most beautiful and incredible enigma I have ever come across with and is my weakness. I need to keep him for myself. I need him even though I know he is horrible as a love interest. Horrible because love interests will always come second, maybe even third, to everything else in his life... We saw a side of him that we haven't seen before and it just made me fall harder for him. I won't mention names here but just know that McKenzie gave me a taste of an amazing ship sailing but yanked it away from me before I could be happy about it. I feel betrayed McKenzie!
Anyway, this world is so freaking addicting that I can't take it! I tried pacing myself with this book and it was the hardest thing to do. The moment I cracked open its beautiful spine, the real world was cut off and I was in Sky's shoes. Not that I'm complaining, she has some hunky men in her life. All of them are different from each other in so many ways and it's hard not to be in love with them. I know I focus a lot on the men but I'm not sorry. It's just that this series is the ONE series that gives me so many incredible men to choose from and my heart refuses to choose just one. Like you all know by now.
Men aside, this plot is as fantastic as they come. We see how intricate the magic world can get and how it's never just black and white. This is the most complex world I have had the pleasure of reading about and I have learned not to judge the characters solely on their actions. I love every single one of them, even the ones that look and really are evil. I embrace all of their darkness and just hope for the best.
There were new characters introduced to us and I am loving everything McKenzie is throwing our way. Some plot twists that went on are still breaking me because I feel something horrendous coming and I know I can't stop it...
I felt this book to be a bit slower than the other two but like I said, still incredibly addicting. Sky's character development is still happening and I can't wait to see more of it. And that CLIFFHANGER!! I need more McKenzie, please!

I hate how this book made me feel from start to finish. So many clusterfucks that happened and the secrets and lies were starting to tire me. I applaud the author for how complicated this plot was but I feel overwhelmed but the size of the supernatural world created and everything felt all over the place. I still invested to finish this and mostly because I'm curious about what's about to happen.

The only saving grace of this book was Quell's affection for Skylar. Our emo vampire who's bound by his gratitude towards his maker but clearly loved Skylar and treated her with kindness and gentleness. I loved how he prevented Skylar from killing and how their companionship with each other gave them reprieve. It felt platonic at best, but still, so precious in my opinion.

Another series that has a interesting premise but devolves into a shit "poor me" 'heroine', an abusive romantic relationship, and ultimately just a lame job at coming to any sort of conclusion with story lines. So if you like the whole trope of "the bad guy keeps getting more powerful so let me keep making my heroes more powerful to conquer", coupled with a horridly written abusive "romantic" relationship then this series is for you.

This novel moved the story along pretty well. To be honest, though, if I wasn't we reading the Ethan novels right after, I would have no idea what is going through his head since he seems to constantly blow hot and cold. I'm not exactly sure what's going on with Quell or how the author is going to resolve the issue. As much as she wanted a normal human life, Snyder seems to keep going farther and farther down the rabbit hole.

"Midnight Falls" finds Skylar in the horrible position of trying to find a way to satisfy everyone by removing Quell's dependence on her blood. It seems the pack wants to kill him and she wants to save him. Quell has another plan in mind much to Micheala's dismay. So much so, that Demetrius will come to Sky for assistance.

Meanwhile, Skylar protects Ethan from Marcia and the Creed only to find herself on the receiving end of a curse by them. Once again they take possession of the Aufero. Skylar is determined to get it back but not before she has to kiss a bunch of frogs to get the right assistance she needs. Ethan continues to be a jerk of magnificent proportions and I can no longer think of him as an potential lover for Sky. Yet, as we all know, we women are notorious for choosing the wrong guy at some point and time in our lives.

Chris is attempting to cope with the new changes in her life and she is beyond hurt that Ethan would have allowed her to die rather than let her be changed into a vamp. She is not about to forgive this anytime soon. However, she is not the only "big bad" in the picture. There are several new delicious villians rearing their ugly heads and looking for their chance at glory. At times, it is sometimes hard to figure out who the good guys are and who are the bad guys.

While I enjoyed this read much better than book two, I do think it is time for Ms. Hunter to concentrate a little on a little romance in Skylar's life. This book touches on it ever so slightly but not enough to kick the series into the next level. If Sky is so loyal and dedicated to her pack/friends what would she be like to a lover? Hmmm! What a delectable thought. Let's hope we see some of this in book four.

Oh my goodness, this series is just too good! I just couldn't stop reading, it was horrible yet awesome at the same time! I felt like slapping Skylar a few times because she got a little frustrating at some points (along with some other characters) but aside from that I was rooting for her actions. Right when things start to get calm, the action kicks up again and takes you on a exhilarating ride. It's absolutely amazing and always entertaining. I love how there was more magic and action in this book. There were twists and turns throughout the story that just kept me at the edge of my seat. So much so that right when the book ended, I kept flipping pages to read more just to find out that the book was over! WHAT THE HECK?! I want more! I absolutely can NOT wait for the next book of the series to come out! I really am truly addicted to this series. Each book just keeps getting better and better. Midnight Falls is absolutely captivating and such a page turner that it has left me thirsting for more!

Keeping her humanity

I now see the all encompassing theme, which is Sky's ability to stay humane after being dropped in this world. I was seriously afraid that she was going to cross that line this time. How will she deal with choosing her life over another's? So far she continues to be the heroine but it will be difficult for her to stay that way.

I keep expecting the MC to grow up, but she doesn't, the pack abuses her and she just lets them . As soon as they need help shes right there but when she needs help they tell her its an inconvenience. I hate most of the characters because they are assholes and the ones I do like she wants nothing to do with. I tried. I made it through 2 books but I just can't finish this series.

I’m 75% into Book 3 on Sky’s and Book 4 of Ethan’s. Ethan has gotten laid a good bit in these books and come to find out our girl is a virgin. But what really stopped me was after making out with Sky he calls the girl from the bar and the next morning tells Sky not to make it weird and she nods her head. Um. No. I feel like I have wasted my time on this series. Done.

Exceptional Series in Kindle Unlimited with Wrong Cover Art

One of the frustrating things about being a Kindle Unlimited member is finding really well written books in the paranormal genre once you’ve read the best ones. So I was deeply gratified to find this series which presents the paranormal lifestyle of the dominant Midwest were-shifter pack at a gritty, politically savvy level as seen through the eyes of a multi-talented young shifter woman who wishes she was just a normal human.

The magical and adversarial adventures in books one and two are complex and compelling yet I began wondering why Skylar wasn’t missing a deeper level of intimacy with anyone. Why wasn’t she feeling bereft after two years of struggling? Were her friendships with Steven, Josh and her adopted vampire fulfilling those needs enough? Was she an androgynous type of person who didn’t need physical loving and a deep relationship to feel a sense of emotional fulfillment? In book three those feelings of needing to connect with someone at a deeper level are finally awakened after she is traumatized by the death of those helping her get rid of a curse..sadly it fizzles before blooming into a romance.

This writer loves vocabulary and I have joyfully learned more than a few new words and thoroughly enjoy her writing style however I am disappointed she did not challenge her cover artist to present her heroine correctly. Though the very white young woman on the cover is beautiful, she most certainly does not represent the heroine of this series. Skylar is half Portuguese with sun kissed (tan) skin, green eyes and curling mahogany (auburn, not black) hair. Come one, as book readers we have a great understanding and appreciation for diversity; the cover is a racist snub to the book’s leading character as well as the author who created her. It’s also insulting to the reader and should be addressed and corrected. The cover art is diminishing, minus one star.

The books must be read in order or you will be completely lost in this book.
This book is told only from Sky's perspective, so if you had any issues with Chris getting a POV, that does not happen in this book.
Alliances are made and broken in this story. With some tentative ones made initially, under some pretty suspicious circumstances and it was honestly a twist I didn't see coming. From there the plot thickens, with Sky trying to get and keep the Aufero from Marcia, who may or may not be a sociopath. And trying to stop someone from ending the entire world. So she has a bit on her mind, plus dealing with her vampire, she doesn't have much downtime.
Sky is still an interesting character. She is still a bit naive, I had hoped she be a bit less in this story, but I think that's just who she is at this point. Always looking on the bright side of things, unable to do anything that would actually hurt anyone. I like how complex her relationship with Quell is. It's probably one of the more interesting things about this series.
Ethan is an enigma because I don't really know why Sky is interested in him a part from him being hot. He's honestly pretty mean to her, but she manages to still follow him around like an excitable puppy. Tbh, I'm a bit more interested in her and Josh or even Steven at this point.

There's some swearing and a lot violence throughout the story. Not particularly gory, but violence nonetheless.

The story ends at around 89% and the rest is a chapter for Ethan's POV book and the next Sky Brooks book.

Midnight Falls (Sky Brooks Series Book 3)

Some spoiler alerts...
I am so glad that I found this series because I am just having a blast reading it... I especially love the tension between Skylar and Ethan it is so HOT... you can tell they have a LOVE ❤️/ HATE relationship but it is magnifying and you want to say just get on with it what are you waiting for..... even with everything going on, and believe me, there is so much going on, each page is there is action filled drama......

In this third installment, we are seeing more of the as Vampires as helping them out..... I love Quell and who knows... I kinda have to admit kinda like Demetrius and Chris now Michaela I only wish her harm after all she is done I would hope that Demetrius would find out the truth of all she stuff she truly has done to everyone.....

Skylar's relationship with Quell as complicated as it is keeps you rooting for an ending that will leave them both happier maybe if she doesn't end up with Ethan, a relationship with him...

Okay, enough with this review I am ready to read the next book 📚 definitely recommend this series .... until next time..
Enjoy 😊😉

In the third book of the Sky Brooks Saga, we find that Sky is trying to push her magical boundaries. Her friend Steven has moved into her house and become her unlikely roommate, and she has developed a complicated relationship with a vampire named Quella. After reaching out to her biological family, getting kidnapped by said family, and then rescued by Sebastian, Ethan, and Josh, Sky is able to acquire some priceless spell books. With the help of Josh and Ethan, Sky is able to learn more about her past, the shadow spirit that resides within her, and begins to come to terms with what she really is. Sky continues to draw me into her stories because of her imperfections. She is not a strong heroine, but is willing to do what is required of her to continue to grow and progress as a person. She pushes back when Ethan pushes her and doesn't let him dictate how her life should be. To me, that makes her a strong person and keeps me reading her story.

This book was much better than book 2! It’s once again told from only Sky’s perspective, which I was very happy about. I think Hunter still has a hard time with POV though. This book is supposed to be from Sky’s POV (like book 1) yet we will go through pages of interactions happening between people with zero Sky content.
It did take quite a while for me to get into this book and I wasn’t sure if I would continue.
There was hardly any Steven or Josh, which was disappointing as they are two of my favorite characters!
I like Quell, so I enjoyed the scenes with him and am curious to see how all of that ends up.
There are some Ethan/Sky romantic developments (once again, more like book 1!), which is always interesting to see. But honestly I really really wish that Sky was into Josh. Clearly he likes her! And especially after the disaster of book 2, I can’t believe that Sky is still into Ethan.

I was so relieved that this book did not have the whole duo POV of the other book. Off the bat I have to say something that really bothers me is the fact that she repeats so much of the other books on this book. Like it is not necessary to repeat everything. Every time a character pops up we get a whole reminder on who the are what they did and even more. I read the books I don't need you to fill in pages of things is the readers already read. I don't mind a tidbit reminder but when it involves pages it is annoying. It almost felt that the author did it to make the book longer then it really is. Other then that I thought the book was entertaining and the characters have developed really well.

I started liking this book in the series as the personal relationships became more developed. Skylar is more connected and knows more about the were-animals in the pack and about Chris who has been connected to Ethan, and learns more about Josh and her own magic.
I also like the fact that Skylar seems more capable of defending herself after all the training she did with Winter, although I still can't picture Winter as a snake. Most of the stories I've read before this have dealt with werewolves.
Now Sky is a guardian of a magical object, but her existence is still problematical. Will she ever have the ability to exist without worrying about the shade that has kept her alive?
Stay tuned fo book #4.

This Werewolf & Shifter Thriller is impressive. Sky continues to navigate the minefield of the otherworld. While pulled in many directions, she struggles with which direction to turn. All of the choices are bad. Should she choose the least of the evils? Is there anyone she can trust?

The protagonist has a habit of getting into demanding and deadly situations. Fortunately, she comes away still alive. This episode covers a lot of ground but fails to identify the title's or series' objectives. Nevertheless, the tale is entertaining.

Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Haunting. Romantic. Tragic. Unpredictable. Wonderful characters.

I’m done

Honestly? I could barely tell you what happened. I know there was more do they/don’t they, more insight, and new players came onto the field. There was some drama of questioning one’s morality. There was a lot of fighting and scary stuff. Drama.

And that’s just the cliff notes. Everything else got strung together with things that weren’t important, and it did nothing for my group mentality. I should’ve given up long ago but I just loved loved loved the idea that the author made. I thought I could bare through all the unnecessary paragraphs and all the rudeness and things that just rubbed me the wrong way from the heroine. But I’m done.

So now Sky has joined the pack and with the exception of Steven and Josh they don’t seem to like her. Sebastian keeps secrets and as alpha never seems happy with her actions. Ethan is an extra bossy beta. The Faes, vampires and witches are no longer allies and the magic she holds or doesn’t is like a yo-yo. Ethan runs so hot and cold it makes me wonder whether she should pack a bag and go find that uncle in Canada. Family is not a good concept in this series and the bond she has with the vampire she “saved” is unstable. If you are looking for romance this is not the series. But I am compelled to continue the series.

It was ok

Most of the story was spent with the author forgetting that it was supposed to be first person and Sky be the narrator. It had a lot of things happening that Sky was just in the room for and not really being a part of it. Also, it felt like a really long book for nothing to really happen. It also had elements that made it seem like it was trying to have a romance element but it would just leave parts hanging and unfulfilled. Overall, it didn't feel like the author put much time into the cohesiveness of the story and the viewpoints it was supposed be told in.

This is one of my favorite books of the series. Skylar is becoming more comfortable with who and what she is. Her relationships with the pack members continue to develop, especially with Ethan, Josh and Stephen. There is more world building. We learn more about the witches and the fae. I enjoyed how the story developed and how Skylar bounces back after disappointments. Both realistic and escape fantasy. Highly recommend!

I hate that sky is attracted to Ethen he always put her down makes her feel worthless and I understand that sky dosent want to feel coddled and that great but this book never got better from the last books. The pack and ethan are both soo toxic for sky. So sky is a virgin ethan and her both get down and guess what ethan approaches another girl and told sky to not make it awkward between them and our misogynist sky nods and agrees wtf

wooow

Really enjoyed book 3 and seeing sky come into the other world. I don’t want her become corrupt but I am glad to see she is learning to protect herself and accept the pack as the only family she has. I was hoping for more of a Josh x Sky relationship cause I can’t stand Ethan most of the time….though they are very similar…. Can’t wait to find out what all Ethan really is as well because he;s as much a mixed pot as sky is…

Good

This book was as good as the previous books but there wasn’t as much action in this book as there was in her previous books in the series. I don’t know why sky and Ethan finally get together he’s such a jerk to her I guess that’s the kind of person she likes. Be a jerk to me belittle me and I will jump into bed with you. That seems to be the way sky was thinking. I like the way that she was taking care of her vampire.
