Five stars purely for nostalgia. :) I read this book so many times as a kid, and it inspired me to dig deeper into the fantasy genre both as a reader and a writer, kindling my love of dragons and inspiring a short story I wrote in middle school.

The Dragonling: A Dragon in the Family (Dragonling, #2) by Jackie French Koller, 71 pages. CHAPTER BOOK Aladdin, 1993. $17. 9781534400658

BUYING ADVISORY: EL – OPTIONAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: LOW

The village Darek lives in is having a hard time adjusting to Darek’s dragon, Zantor. Although Darek is trying to show the village that dragons don’t mean them harm, the village council isn’t on board and the kids Darek’s age have started to tease him and Zantor. When some of the boys make an untrue claim about Zantor attacking them, Darek’s father is brought before the council and has to answer for his son and Zantor.

Again, the cover doesn’t properly represent the book because the cover looks cartoon-ish and the book is more serious. As much as I think kids will pick these books up for their covers, I don’t think they will keep reading once they see the bland inside illustrations. This story was good, but the ending was abrupt and not satisfying. After reading the first book with my son, he wasn’t interested in reading any more about Darek and Zantor.

The ending was abrupt and dissatisfying. These books would be better if they were all one book instead of a short series. I couldn’t convince my 8 year old to read this second one-he wasn’t interested after reading the first.

So my in-laws decided to sell their family home and RV for their retirement. That meant a lot of their things had to go. So I received a lot of books that my husband and his siblings grew up reading. This book actually somehow came from one of my husband's elementary teachers. Mason and I needed a chapter book to start for our one-on-one reading and the book that we wanted was still on hold at the library. So I grabbed this book for us to see if we like it. We actually, finished the book in that week. This book is so unique that it doesn't have a lot of illustrations throughout. Also that some of the words are pretty hard to figure out what they were. But we felt like we didn't miss much for not reading book 1. This book was so interesting and thrilling to read. Mason really enjoyed the silly antics of the dragon. But also I believe this book taught him that it's okay to stand up against adults when you know it's something that is right. Just have some evidence to back you up. We really enjoyed how we had to use our imagination to see everything in this book not like a lot of books for older elementary books are now. I highly recommend checking this book out. You won't be disappointed at all.

When young Derek and his family bring a baby dragon named Zantor back to their village and into their home, he and his family become the victims of fear and bullying. People just don’t trust dragons. Surely it is a stupid move to bring one into their midst. The village elders that the dragonling may stay but certain provisions must be met. And at the first sign of trouble the dragonling will be put to death. Derek’s father grudgingly vouches for Zantor and it is decreed that if the dragonling causes even the slightest bit of trouble then Derek’s father will also die.

But some people can’t leave well enough alone and they set up a situation designed to cause problems with the dragonling. As a consequence Derek’s dad is tied to the stake and the flames are lit. Can Derek uncover the real culprits who have framed both the dragonling and his dad? Will he be too late?

Once again, the characters are easy to identify with and of course Zantor, the dragonling, is endearing and quirky. Detailed illustrations make the story come alive. A wonderful second book in the Dragonling Series. Young readers will be captivated by the adventure as they learn life lessons in an enchanting manner. Perfect chapter book for 7-10 year olds and other early readers. Great for parents or grandparents to read to younger children. I look forward to reading the remaining books in this series.

Note: Jackie French Koller (the author) is a high school classmate of mine. She has not provided me with these books nor has she requested that I review them. These are my honest reviews of books that I purchased. I think Darek's right. They he pepole don't need to make dragon killing contests any more because dragons are strong and if people atack them they will be mad and kill the people.
I think Darek's smart because he's trying to make peace with the dragon's so they could help the people and protect them
