Under Her Skin is by Margo Bond Collins. This book was generously provided to me in exchange for an honest review by the author.

Under Her Skin Margo Bond Collins:

So I want to admit upfront that I am insanely squeamish regarding snakes. This might seem funny for a woman that is getting ready to move to a new home very soon deep in the woods. But because of that fear, I was a little worried about reading this book. I’m so glad I didn’t give in to my fear though. I love Margo’s writing and even though the heroine was a snake shifter, it didn’t come across as creepy at all. It was just a part of who she was, beautiful and strong.

Lindi Parker was found when she was just a toddler by her adoptive parents. They raised her to learn how to control her reptilian side and to embrace her human side. She knew nothing of the shifter world, thought maybe she was the only one. Lindi is a social worker, trained to help children in need of her services. They are children who have been hurt, neglected, abused. She has dealt with some of the worst possible examples of humanity, the adults that hurt these children. But still, she keeps her serpent side under control. Then came the day she met Dr. Kade Nevala.

Mongoose and Snake.:

Kade is a mongoose shifter. You probably already know that a mongoose is a snake’s worst enemy. But there is a crazy, strong attraction between Kade and Lindi. Could a mongoose and a snake ever be more than mortal enemies.

At the same time, shifter children have been disappearing. Who is taking them and why? Who could want to hurt these children? As Lindi calls on her training to help to solve the mystery, the connection between she and Kade gets stronger. All shifters are a part of a council equipped with enforcers that make sure all laws are adhered to. And every last one of them absolutely hate snake shifters. Will they ever accept her as part of their community?

Under Her Skin, Margo Bond Collins:

This book surprised me on so many levels. The spark between Kade and Lindi kept my romantic needs satisfied. But there was a suspenseful aspect to it as well as they worked to find out who is hurting these beautiful children. So, this was my first official snake shifter book and it was a huge success. Margo, you rock!

During the ordinary course of her job as a children's counsellor, Lindi Parker helps on a case involving a young female child who killed her abusive step-father. She goes with that child in the ambulance but instead of going to the children's hospital, the place Parker would normally find herself in a situation like this, they go to a different one. But then she already knows things are different this time. For the little girl lets her know that she knows that Parker is a shifter. And that the hospital that they were going to is the shifter hospital.

Of course Lindi Parker knew she herself is a shifter. She didn't know, though, that there were other shifters out there or that what she was is detectable by others. She didn't know because her (adoptive) father, a snake scientist (not actual term used but I don't want to take the time to look it up), had found her when gathering snakes to examine. Later, expecting to find a snake in the container he had put the snake, he found instead a baby (or a toddler, I forget now). Then watches as the child morphs from human to snake and back again. That man, a Dr. Parker, and his wife adopt the small weresnake and teach her to be human.

Lindi is concerned/alarmed and curious about this development, but it isn't the time to talk about shifters with a little traumatised girl. Later.

Then, once everyone is at the hospital, Lindi is confronted by the girl's doctor (some might call the confrontation something approaching a sexual assault, which Lindi did, one or more occasions later). Luckily for her, that doctor goes somewhat against his own instincts, for he is a weremongoose. And they are supposed to kill snakes (instead of force kisses on them while thrusting them against walls).

And the story unfolds from there - a weresnake and weremongoose circling; introduction to the shifter community; almost immediate instinctual hatred towards Lindi from the community for what she is - the snake part; and a mystery to solve. For almost before anyone can catch their breath, Lindi finds herself working on a case, with this same doctor (Kade), that involves the death of children.

The story was quite interesting and good. But then this isn't the first book I've read by this author, and the others were . . . um, good. hmm, I only see one other book I've read by this author. I rather thought I'd read at least one more than that. No matter, both (or however many there actually have been) books I've read have been good.

One note: Mongoose lets Lindi in on what she is exactly and no, they don't call her 'weresnake'. She's a lamia. Which I mention for two reasons - throughout the story I kept seeing and hearing it in my mind as 'llama' *shrugs*; and the first time I saw the word I randomly clicked on it to see if my Kindle would give me a definition (I assumed it wouldn't). Definition appeared - "a domesticated South American camelid, widely used as a meat and pack animal by Andean cultures since the Pre-Columbian era." Dang, no, that's a llama, I meant to give the lamia definition - "a mythical monster, with the body of a woman or with the head and breasts of a woman and the body of a snake, said to prey on human beings and suck the blood of children."

** Read as part of the Hearts Of Darkness Box Set **

Under Her Skin is book one in The Shifter Shield series by Margo Bond Collins. It has a very interesting set up, with several surprises along the way, and a verity of unique shifters.

First I have to say - weresnake, how awesome is that? We don’t see many shifter stores featuring reptiles.

Lindi was a wonderful character. She’s beautiful and strong. I really liked the mystery surrounding her. She doesn’t realize their are other shifter out their, who her birth parents are, or anything about her kind. Then we have the self-awareness that she has in herself and balancing both the human and snake side. She try’s to keep her natures in check, being a good human who cares verses the snake side which can be cold and ruthless. All of this added to my intrigue and helped pull me into Lindi’s character.

Dr. Kade Nevada a mongoose shifter. A mongoose and a snake, ya they are mortal enemies, but here he turns Lindi’s world up side down. These two have a crazy strong attraction between them. The chemistry was of the charts with these two and it was wonderful to see it come alive on the pages.

It’s a suspenseful fast-paced storyline involving murders, kidnapping, and shifter politics. I liked that the author put thought and payed attention to details about her snake shifters. It made it more believable. I enjoyed the mystery’s we get and the romance. I will say at the end that I felt a few storylines where not completed and left open. I do hope they will continue into book two and get answered.

Under Her Skin was an intense and marvelous first installment. There is a lot to savor and enjoy. I was impressed and sucked into the world and writing. Can’t wait to read book 2, A Generation of Vipers.

I absolutely loved the change of shifter focus to one I hadn't ever thought/heard about - snakes. I thought the writer did an excellent job creating her concept in regards to snake shifters; and presenting the dual natures of how a snake (especially one who is merged with a human) could be and the expectations from those who know them/about them.

I enjoyed the possible powers and history of the race and really look forward to the mystery being revealed about the MC's past.

Aside from the premise, the characters had depth, the mystery was well done and the writing was also very good.

My dislikes - not enough of a chemistry build between the main character and her love interest (in my humble opinion, of course). The relationship did build and does provide a solid foundation, but I found the "passion" between the two seemed just put out there and not really developed.

I also found parts of the story a little tedious as the author tried to provide info. Since it's the first book of a series, not surprising but still something I have to mention.

One thing that I liked but ended up becoming a little annoyed at was the constant push of "snake education." I.E - Jacobson's organ. It was cool of the author to introduce that terminology (among other snake facts) into that story and work it in, but I found the repetitive use of it annoying because it tended to jar me out of the story.

Overall, I see a lot of promise with the characters and series and would recommend paranormal shifter fans give it a go.

Cool Shifters

Very cool shifter story. Usually a lamia is bad news but Lindi is special. She was raised by humans who knew what she was and loved her anyways? Now she is a counselor to traumatized children. Probably the most empathetic job ever, but being a cold blooded snake doesn't keep her from doing a wonderful job with the kids. I have only one issue and it's about how no one knew she was a shifter her whole life. At least not until she meets Kade anyways. It's a mystery that was never flushed out.

This was a completely serendipitous read for me... something that happens to me often when we are talking about paranormal romance genre. A good blurb... and even better cover always gets my attention... and this love story is no different. As well as trying a new author this was a completely unique story for me to dive into. Yes, yes I have read plenty of shifter series and standalone but they always somehow revolve around wolves. This one was very different as the story was about a snake and mongoose. In the wild, they are natural enemies and it is set as such in our supernatural shifter world. As the were-animals in this book were very different species from what I'm used to reading it was a very entertaining & novel read in which I learned new lore and interactions between different species of shifters. The author has impressed me highly in that regard as a lot of research was done to make the story more believable.

We are introduced to Lindi Parker who as a toddler were-snake was abandoned and saved by her foster human parents. Human parents who have done their best to show Lindi how to be a warm and kind version of her were-self. Something she took to heart by becoming social worker/counselor for children in crisis. While on a case she stumbled upon a shifter child that in that moment opens up a whole new world of other shifters' existence. Unfortunately, she discovers fast that some shifters are not too happy to have her around because of her snake nature... okay ye snakes get a MONSTER bad rap in this book.

Fortunately, the first person she encounters is the one who might hold the answers to who she is and where she belongs. That person being the ever-sexy Dr. Mongoose. Mongoose... snake... you get the ominous vibe yet? Well, you shouldn't because in a favorite twist opposites attract.

In this form, the heat that poured from his burned against my skin even more intensely, and I found myself wanting to coil around him, soak up some of that warmth for myself.
You can’t snuggle up to a man who just offered to kill you, Lindi.

The sizzling chemistry grows exponentially as Lindi and the good Doctor, Kade Nevala, have to work together on a case to solve the mystery of who is murdering shifter children.

I still couldn’t break eye contact; his gaze was hypnotic. He leaned in and kissed me.

The read was fast paced with some interesting plot twists. However, I felt like some things were left off as a loose end (for me). Such as I needed more on Lindi's background, her fascination with one particular snake of her adoptive father's, and certain fate of *mumble, mumble* at the end.

Overall I had a fabulous time reading this PNR and I will make sure to pick up more books by Margo Bond Collins... as should you!

4 Under her Skin Stars

Well now, I have a new author to follow. I won this ARC, and being as I like shifter books I dove right in.

I can’t say I have ever read a shifter book about a snake or a mongoose, so that was pretty exciting. Different yet interesting enough I needed to know more.

Lindy is a pretty remarkable young woman who has had to deal with being different but also both sides of herself. She was incredibly lucky to have been taken in by people who thought of her as their very own and treated her as such.

Never mind the field of work she went in to, it shows how much nurture can be a part of ones DNA as much as nature. Or at least that’s how I thought of it.

Kade, he was mystery to me for a lot of the book. I didn’t really know what to think of him or what his intentions were. I think that’s what the author was going for and if so nailed it. He grew on me, but I still am unsure of all his intentions.

I think he had a deep attraction to Lindy along with a healthy dose of WTF! If this was real life I would have love to have seen the expression on his face when he sensed what she was.

I would call this a suspense for sure. Who did it? Why? And will they be caught.
I wonder if there is a going to be more? A series? Same characters? Different character?... I say YES please to all of those..

*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*

Lindi is a weresnake. She believes she is the only one. While on call one night, she is introduced to a whole new world and realizes there are multiple other shifters. She also realizes the other shifters hate her and would like to see her dead.
I enjoyed this story so much. I liked Lindi and her "origin" story. I loved her parents! I didn't like Kade at first, I felt he overstepped. I liked what he was. I liked this world.
What was disappointing to me were the editing and continuity errors. This would have been a 4 star read, but these errors detracted from the story for me. The biggest one was the murdered girls. They are named (Candice, Jenna, Tasha, Laura, and Charlotte- that's 5). Then a paragraph or so later, "...discovered that all 3 girls...." and "...all 3 were patients...." Then a few pages later, "...I jotted down the 4 victims..." Also, one girl's last name changes on the same page- Emma Camelli changes to Emma Pack. Then Lindi didn't have shoes- and then did. "At some point, Scott had taken off my shoes, leaving only stockings." "...trying to remain quiet as my shoes scuffed along..." I found this frustrating.

This is a really good start to a series I hope. Not sure if it is going to be one yet or not. I liked both Lindi and Kade but sometimes I thought Lindi could have been a little more cut throat. I understand more than anyone about keeping things under wraps and being in control but sometimes you must release the inner beast to release some of the pent up emotions. I think she was coming to that conclusion by the end of the book. I didn't really see the end coming as I expected I definitely hope there are more books to come and can't wait to learn more about Lamia's.

I liked it but there was rage. Lindi is a counsellor for abused children so you can already see who the victims are going to be. She’s also a were snake who knows nothing about shifters.

Lindi is sweet, strong and wants to do the best she can. But everything she has done pretty much means nothing as it’s not who she is but what. It was cruel how everyone switched so easily.

The children element was brutal in the forms of murder, sexual assault, abuse and pregnancy. Add to that Lindi’s discrimination and yep lots of rage and disgust.

I did like Kade and his possessiveness, not to mention how the one person that is supposed to kill Lindi is the only one that cares.

I’ve read a story with a mongoose and snake shifter before so whilst not completely new for me, it makes a change from werewolves. Nothing against them but it’s been done to death. Looking forward to seeing where Kade and Lindi end up. The discrimination bull s not so much.

Shifter mystery with a twist

This was more than I’d expected, snd the story and the characters kept my attention on the story throughout the book. Lindi was a very likeable MC, and although I liked Kade, here were some moments when he had a testosterone overload and got a little too handsy or physical with Lindi - and I wasn’t a fan, but it was appropriate for the storyline.

The mystery surrounding Lindi’s parentage was touched on, but no substantial progress was made, so I think that will become an overarching plot point. If you are triggered by any mentions of child abuse, either physical or sexual, it is a part of the story and discussed, so you may want to skip this, or at least have warning going in.

Interesting concept, poor cohesiveness

I wanted to like this book better but there were too many logical errors that made it obvious the author didn't care enough to create a well crafted work.

The first glaring error was the inconsistency of the number of victims. Five names were listed but the characters spoke of three and then for murders. All within the space of a few paragraphs. The sense of time was often messed up. The most glaring instance was during the heroine's escape. We see her welcoming the first warm Ray's of the morning sun but about four hours later the sun hasn't risen yet. It is never explained why the heroine isn't recognized as a shifter her whole life until one shifter child suddenly knows she is one. After which the whole shifter world suddenly can tell.

A fascinating look at a new shifter premise, but fatally flawed. I will not be bothering to read any more books by this author.

I hated that the main story centered around kids being hurt, hated the opening scene where a girl fought back, then later learning about how many of the kids were murdered did me in. It didn't help that I don't like snakes and our heroine is a snake shifter. Too many things hit my buttons making this book not for me.

I really wanted to love this book, and I did love the H and especially the h. The originality of the plot was fantastic but it didn't live up to it's promise. So may awesome ideas....

Major Issues-

The H and h have this fantastic set up and hype but it never really goes anywhere and it's all left hanging and messy. I can guess there must be another book but even so its all over the place and even has several reference to discussing their relationship but it never happen! There really isn't much of a relationship at all! I understand there is an investigation going on but seriously as soon as an opportunity for conversation happened it was full of fluff instead of substance that helped progressing the story or relationship. Or Lindi would ask several questions and Kade would respond but not answer but to say that it was too many questions at once or they couldn't talk something else that would take just as much time as it would to actually answer her!! ( this was more about her getting to know the shifter world then their actual relationship but she was always thinking of questions to ask him, that i am sure he wouldn't ask, that would impact their relationship) Then they are alone and discuss stuff ie stories from his job/training that could have been discuss else where!! It felt like nothing of substance was in the way of them talking but nothing meaning ful was discussed! I have also read reviews where they say they are mates and while there are hints to this its never touched as far as i remember but someone can correct me as I was constantly feeling like it was one of those stories where you choose to turn a page and get different story lines but they were all jumbled together and no story was fully fleshed out!

Proofreading/Editing!!
So many inconsistencies that took me out and made me think there had been some major rewriting done but failed to edit other areas referencing back to the original version.

ie-
Number of victims change and within a few paragraphs!

Lindi mentioning she was in her animal form as a teen for weeks and shifted back only because she began to not understand her parents when they talked and was 'losing' herself. Then later this same problem of not understanding talking happened nearly instantly after a shift and she even seem to ' lose' herself after being shifted for only a few hours. It was mentioned she limited herself to shifting once a month and was concerned that Kade had forced a shift but it had only been two weeks since the last time. Then the next day she shifts because she want's comfort but nothing is mentioned on how she normally avoids this!! Then a whole heap of shifts in the next few days like its nothing as well as some what I would call advance shifiting!!

The last name if Lindi's client was something then changed to same as one of the victims last names (Pack). Reference to The mention of the 1st Shield , he only helped after the fact. I think the whole These are only the ones i can remember off the top of my head and stick out. It was early hours of the morning so it is saying a lot that I remember this much!!

It was so disjointed by the end that even if it did have a HEA or even a resolution I wouldn't have brought it.

I am so disappointed, this could be a truly amazing book and series as it has awesome key ideas but the execution of bring them all together slipped. With some editing, as well as rewriting to make it tighter and more cohesive, as well as flesh out the ideas...this would be a brilliant story. I hope that this is done before any further books are release as this has so much more potential then what I got!

There were things that I liked, and things that bothered me - some things bothered me more after I finished reading and I had time to think about it. In the end, it all evened out to a mediocre three stars.

The first thing that bugged me was why didn't Lindi realize there were other were-creatures in her town? She worked with were-children! Were-parents! How could she not know? Then suddenly, she does know! And so do they! It really doesn't make any sense.

Then there's the insta-attraction to Kade, a weremongoose. Seriously? Why? Why aren't they mortal enemies from the beginning like real snakes and mongooses? No, they're powerfully attracted to each other physically. Kade does not make a good first impression either. So why does Lindi even give him the time of day on an emotional level?

All that aside, I liked Lindi, and the were-community was intriguing. The writing was intense and emotional. I'll probably read the second book eventually.

Lindi Parker child services therapist has a secret she has to keep hidden. Adopted by loving parents who have taught her how to hide her other half and gave her a well rounded but secure life. She helps children deal with abuse. While on a case of child abuse she is surprised to discover the child is a shifter, follows the child to Kindred hospital where she meets Dr Kade Nevala. Lindi senses something different about him not to mention the immediate attraction but he's hot, warms her blood, and he is also a shifter but not like herself. One steamy kiss later and told she is not supposed to exist also it's his duty to kill her and they need to talk. He leaves her confused and needing answers to why and what she really is. Going to work the next day she is surprised that Kade is in her meeting and even worse they must work together to find a child serial killer all linked to shifters.
Really great detail and character building, fast pace action with mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Lindi proves to be strong and determined to help others but also to discover her true nature. Kade is hypnotic and all Alpha but can he keep Lindi safe? I Love how the author allowed the attraction to build as well as the suspense. Can a mongoose and snake become more than sworn enemies? This was my first time reading about a female weresnake and it was awesome! Highly recommended!

Lindi is a snake shifter, possibly the last of her kind, as other shifters wanted them dead ( as they deemed them untrustworthy and deadly). She's also a social worker who takes her job very seriously. Kade is a mongoose shifter, a natural enemy of Lindi as she is a snake shifter, but he goes with his human side and realizes 2 things: Lindi is incapable of harming anyone, unless they were attacking her or the children in her care, and 2, she's his mate. Someone is out there kidnapping, mutilating and killing shifter children and it's Kade's job to figure out who, while protecting Lindi and the kids from further attacks. This is a well thought out, we'll written shifter story with insights to 2 new types of shifters. Margo Bond Collins gets 4☆'s for a thought provoking paranormal romance. I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

I received Under Her Skin as a review copy from the author/publisher. The gifting did not determine the review/rating, which reflects my honest opinion. I wondered if I could ever grow to love a snake shifter, but the blurb for this book was intriguing, so I decided to give it a try. The plot was very well done, and there was a lot of tension in the dynamics between shifter clans. The world-building was unique in it's group belief in the rightness of exterminating the snake species. The characters were what made the story, though-- not the typical alpha seeking a mate story line so common in shifter novels. Lindi and Kade were intelligent, kind, and compassionate protagonists, each trying to make the moral choices. An excellent read.

First of all, no matter what I say, I love this book. Mainly, though, because of how fresh it is: the heroine is a were snake and the hero is a were mongoose. In a genre dominated by vampires and werewolves it's extremely refreshing to finally have a series that focuses on other animals. That alone should give people enough of a reason to give this book a read. If you need a break from demons or vampires or werewolves Under Her Skin is definitely worth a read.

The writing and story are well done and if it wasn't it wouldn't have sold this were snake/mongoose concept. What could have been plain goofy or silly turned out to be rather interesting and serious when combined with Collins' writing style and plot.

That being said, I still had problems with the book: I felt that the heroine took things a little too well at times.

A stranger pushing you into a closet and molesting you following it with: "It's my duty to kill you." prooooobably shouldn't have just been brushed under the rug. She thought he was crazy sure but her lust for the hero (aka his "allure") never really made sense to me. Instead of putting as much distance between herself and the hero after she figures out she can't bring his actions to light she doesn't even put up a fight when they're thrown together. She doesn't even ask for an apology from him. Honestly, I just expected a lot of caution and mistrust from both sides considering who they are and their individual history. It didn't help that he'd say it a couple of times out of no where (being dead serious) and she was all "yeah, i know *rolls eyes".

I also didn't fully understand how this grown man who's spent pretty much his whole life being taught to hunt down were snakes and that they're the embodiment of evil or some shit just didn't seem to care she was a were snake? He didn't seem to struggle with how different she was from what he expected. He mentions it but he doesn't really seem to really... care all that much that his world view was practically turned on it's axis. His family makes a LIVING finding and killing were snakes and he's all "Huh... guess they're all not so bad." *shrugs and walks away*

This problem further seeped into how quickly he jumped into their relationship and into accepting/defending her. It was sweet, don't get me wrong, but I didn't really get it.

The fact that his family literally kills off were snakes should have disturbed the heroine a lot more than it did and yet neither the heroine or the hero didn't feel all that moved by it.

What about his family? I'm 110% sure they wouldn't accept that she's still alive let alone that their son, brother, cousin, etc is a relationship with one. If i was dating some guy that my family would go ape shit crazy about me dating (to the point of committing murder) I'd have to be pretty certain I want a relationship with him. Enough to defy my whole family and yet this never crosses their (specifically the hero's) mind once? Maybe this is addressed later on in the next books but for me it was rather distracting that it wasn't even thought of once.

But overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. The small nit picking problems I had with it really only came up after I'd read the book and had to digest everything that had happened. It didn't prevent me from enjoying the book but at times it was distracting. For me at least.

Lindi Parker is a weresnake and a children’s counsellor. She does not know that shifters of ANY other kind exist until she is investigating a series of attacks on children and discovers that they are all shifters of different kinds.
Shifters are a secret, one held by a coalition after years of conflict. The only group that refused to join, and that continues to hunt and kill other shifters were the lamia - snake shifters.
Uh oh.
But there is someone very powerful on her side, Dr Kade Nevala. He’s a member of the Shifter Council and a doctor at the Kindred hospital shifters prefer to use. He’s also a mongoose and her natural enemy.
So it surprises them both when the first thing he does when they are left alone is kiss her.
***
Lindi was found in her snake form by a herpetologist who thought he had a new genus of snake, until he found a small girl asleep in the tank in the morning.
Finding a new breed of snake would have made him famous , at least among certain circles . Finding a weresnake made him a father . (Kindle Locations 147-148).

Dawww
Her parents have worked long and hard to keep her human whilst also understanding her snake side and it’s made her a different kind of lamia. All shifters are pretty much terrified of them.
Then I discovered that there were other shapeshifters out there . Other people who , like me , had to hide what they were if they wanted to fit in with the rest of society . And in the very next instant , I had learned that these people , these shapeshifters , were every bit as afraid of me as any human could ever be . Maybe more so , because they knew what I was really capable of .(Kindle Locations 1492-1495).

The killer has something to do with lamia, so what does that mean for Lindi, and for Kade?
***
All points to Collins for writing shifters other than werewolves. I think the only other shifter world I can remember that includes bats, and smaller mammals was a quick mention in the Southern Vampire mysteries. Here were-bunnies exist and there are a lot of them but they are very good at hiding. I’ll bet…
Very cool. I’ve already read a novella about raven shifters set in this world.

Written in first person by Margo Bond Collins, Under Her Skin is the first book in the Shifter Shields series. A Paranormal Romance & Urban Fantasy, this book follows the single perspective of Lindi Parker, a children's councilor and a weresnake or snake shifter, formally known as a lamia. She thought that she was the only shifter alive until one of her cases led her to Doctor Kade Nevala, a mongoose shifter who was responsible for killing lamias.

Kade didn't kill Lindi, but instead found himself attracted to her, which was mutually reciprocated. Together, they worked a case, searching for a cereal kid killer, and brought them to justice.

I'm familiar with Margo through her Khanavai Warrior Bride Games Series. This book was significantly longer than the books in that series, but far more interesting. Unfortunately, for a proclaimed "romance," I found it heavily lacking in that department. Lindi was sexual (via intercourse) only once with Kade, in Chapter 18 at the 65% mark, and the single encounter was incredibly disappointing. It lacked Margo's usual flare in the raunch department, and gave a PG13 vibe.

The main reason I gave it 3 stars instead of the two I was leaning more towards was because of the familiar setting. It took place in the small city of Glen Rose in Texas, which was a place I lived for 2 years. My father used to work at the wildlife safari outside of Glen Rose and I attended Grandburry Intermediate school. The place hardly registers as a dot on the map, so reading about it was pure nostalgia for me.

While the story itself was intriguing and captivating, it's not what I expected. I will give the second book a chance for redemption.

Good start to a series. Overall an entertaining and enjoyable listen. A different kind of shifter story. Not about big bad hulking shifters but smaller animals who are natural enemies and just as dangerous.

This is the first snake shifter book I have ever listened to. I hate snakes with a passion but I actually was able to listen and enjoy this story. I didn't get all snake cuddly all of the sudden but I wasn't completely repulsed by the character. I'm actually interested in the story and characters enough to read the next installment and see where the story goes.

The story was interesting and had original characters. While Lindi and Kade were both good characters their relationship and romance lacked any real spark for most of the story. It wasn't until almost the end that I really got the sense there was some real connection between them. It is the first of a series and a shorter story so maybe this was part of the problem.

There a numerous questions left unanswered. Questions like…How could she think she was the only shifter? She was never curious about others? Her background, her family? She worked with shifter's but no one knew she was one? Hopefully some of these will be answered in the next installment.

Emma Lysy did a really good job with the narration. Pleasant voice. Good character voices. Clearly spoken with a smooth even pace. Overall very enjoyable.

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator or publisher.

This was a fast fun read - it just feels like there could be even more to the story. I want to know all the different kinds of shifters, apparently there are insect ones too - why don't they have the same problems lamias have? Seems like spiders wouldn't be all lovey-dovey or scorpions either, so why are only the snakes the ones everyone fears? I get that in the past lamias tried to kill off every other shifter species, but why haven't the other non-mammals been similar?

And then there's the instant attraction between a snake and a mongoose - it's never explained... just basically instant heat/lust. For some reason once I'm not reading the book it starts to bother me.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the story - I like that there are a million and one different types of shifters (bunnies and squirrels?? It would just be nice to meet more of them) and the suspense part and fighting stuff was really well done... it's just that I have questions that aren't answered and I'm not even sure the author thought out some of the stuff she included - it just made for a cool thing to have, like the insect kid.

I'm definitely going to read the rest of the series, interested in what else will happen in this world...
