Since childhood, Magnus has been led to believe he is the Laird Alwyn’s bastard, and raised to hate the Clan Kincaid. But when he learns he is without a doubt the son of the murdered Laird Kincaid, his life as he has always known it is shattered. Now, hiding his knowledge and his fury, he returns to Burnbryde Castle, awaiting the chance to strike against the man whose treachery robbed him of his legacy. His first act of rebellion: to steal a kiss from the redheaded beauty who’s betrothed to the Alwyn’s eldest son and heir.
Since her arrival at Burnbryde, Tara Iverach has been confined to a tower to guard her virtue before she marries. But after a surprise embrace with a lean, bare-chested Highlander who claims to be the Alwyn’s oldest son, she can’t contain her excitement over her good fate. Unfortunately, he is the wrong eldest son, and she is set to marry his cruel and lecherous half brother, Hugh. Can Magnus conquer his rivals and claim his Kincaid destiny before the woman who’s captured his heart becomes his sworn enemy’s bride?
This review is a little spoilerish if you haven't read the first in the series, so please proceed with caution.
Holy Shamoly…we’re hitting the homestretch. This year has gone so fast and I can’t believe we’re nearly at Christmas. Reading has unfortunately taken a backburner to real life stuff. Bloody kids, you’d think they were the centre of my universe or something? Luckily, this weekend I managed to set aside some quality reading time and managed to tuck myself in bed with a Highlander.
The Rebel of Clan Kincaid is the second in the Highland Warrior series and I have to say that I’m a fan. More than likely it’s because of the HOT covers, manly men and courageous heroines. I will admit though that a few words in the description made me clap my hands and bounce in my seat. See, I’m a sucker for the words – Highlander, destiny, conquer, castles and clans. If you then add rivals, treachery, lecherous and rebellion…well, I’m SOLD!!
The Prologue starts with Magnus Alwyn finding out that his whole life was a lie. To find out that his sworn enemy is actually his brother was a shock to Magnus but it all kind of made sense. He never felt like he fit in and was always treated like the illegitimate child he was lead to believe. To find out that he had a family and that his “father” was actually responsible for the senseless murder of his parents is shocking to him.
Magnus never had an opportunity to take advantage of his “father”, the Laird Alwyn, as Alwyn always treated him as a nobody. Alwyn’s son Hugh dislikes Magnus and goes out of his way to make him miserable. Unfortunately for poor Hugh, Magnus is the better man and everyone knows it. Magnus was determined to make something of himself and worked hard to be a warrior and defender of his clan. It’s only as he finds out the truth about his family that his priorities change. The person he once honoured and defended was now the person he wants to see face justice.
Tara has been living with the nuns for five years when her world is turned upside down. Her parents had died and she had been separated from her only sister. Their appointed guardian the powerful Earl of Buchan, is the King’s youngest son. He placed Tara with the nuns and Arabel, the older sister, was presented at court. Tara, being young and very inexperienced, dreamed of having the same opportunity as Arabel to go to court. When she finally comes face to face with Buchan she is informed that there will be no presentation at court as she is to marry…her sister’s betrothed.
Tara is devastated to hear about her sister's death and Buchan couldn’t tell her any more of the how and why she died. With no choice, she is bundled into a carriage and faces an uncertain future. Her journey is cold and uncomfortable and before she arrives at her destination they are overrun by brigands. She is running for her life when she is attacked and threatened with a sword. Luckily, just when she thought she was going to die, a man attacks her attacker.
It’s pitch black and neither of them can see each other but they end up having a conversation that ends with a little flirting. Tara is thinking that things weren’t looking so bad after all. Magnus realises that this woman could change everything.
The story then goes on filled with murder, mystery and intrigue. Tara has questions she needs to be answered in regards to her sister. Magnus needs to find a way to protect Tara from Hugh, and have his own questions answered. Why and how was the Alwyn involved with his parent’s death? Will it take a battle between the Alwyn and Kincaid clan's to see justice served?
The love story between Tara and Magnus is fast and intense. Their immediate attraction turns to lust and it’s not long before they are bumping uglies. Now, to me, this part seemed a wee bit too modern. Tara has been living with nuns for 5 years since she was fifteen. She seemed to know A LOT and wasn’t scared or hesitant AT ALL. Oh well, it was steamy, it was good, can’t complain too much.
I enjoyed The Rebel of Clan Kincaid. It kept my attention from start to finish and I enjoyed watching Tara and Magnus grow and learn to trust each other. I will definitely be interested in reading more from this author in the future.

Our heroine Tara Iverach is ward of the Earl of Buchan. The Earl has come to retrieve Tara from a priory where she has lived since the death of her parents five years back. Tara immediately has an unease about the Earl coming for her and becomes more distressed as she learns she is to wed Hugh, the Chief Alwyn, who was betrothal to her sister, who she then learns has died. Tara wants nothing to do with marriage, Hugh or the Earl and will do anything she can to escape.
Our hero Magnus has just recently learned that he is not the bastard son of Chief Alwyn (who he has no respect for) but actually the son of their rival clan the Kincaid's. Magnus learns that his parents were brutally murdered and decides to enact revenge. He will do whatever necessary to learn and gain information from the Alwyn's of what happened/transpired. But things become complicated when he learns of his brothers (supposed brother) Hugh's new betrothal, Tara and becomes drawn and intrigued by her.
We have Tara, who is determined to not marry Hugh and also find out what/how her sister died. And we have Magnus who is seeking revenge and gaining information from the Alwyn's to the mystery of his parents death. We then have thrown in to the mix and complicating both MC plans is the attraction and pull they have towards each other.
I loved the first book and was looking forward to this one but found it somewhat disappointing. It was a slow start/pacing and seemed to continue for a while due to the build up of each of the MC's storyline and background. It was well written but felt that the time and effort put into the background, plot, planning and strategizing took away from the connection and emotional storyline of the MC. I liked who Tara and Magnus were as individuals but found nothing really to connect me to them emotionally or found much heart involved in the romance.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
After her parents died, Tara spent her childhood in a convent away from her sister. When her powerful guardian the Earl Buchan finally comes to get her, it's to deliver her for marriage. Attacked by outlaws on the journey, Tara is rescued and kissed by a man claiming to be her betrothed. As the bastard son of the Laird Alwyn, Magnus has had to fight for everything in his life. Now with his real identity in question, he wants revenge. His supposed step-brother Hugh doesn't deserve Tara but Magnus can't make waves as he tries to find out who betrayed the Kincaids. Tara and Magnus are smack in the middle of clan wars and betrayal but their attraction for one another can't be denied.
Book two in the Highland Warrior series, The Rebel of Clan Kincaid picks up right were the first book left off. You could start with this one but it would better serve you to read the first. We learn in the first that Magnus is really Faelan Kincaid, one of the three missing Kincaid brothers. The Laird Kincaid was betrayed and murdered with his three sons scattered in the wind to escape. Book one is about the oldest Kincaid brother coming back to reclaim his land and because of a matching tattoo, he learns that Magnus is his youngest brother. Magnus decides to stay with the Alwyns so he can figure out who else was responsible for betraying his family. The book picks up the story with the Laird Alwyn preparing for a battle with the returned Kincaid brother to try and get the land back.
With this continuing betrayal story, you can imagine we have a full plate, add in the mystery of what happened to Tara's sister and other various issues dealing with secondary characters and there was a lot going on; this didn't leave much time for Magnus and Tara. Their relationship doesn't even get going until around the 30% mark and even after that, they never really spend any time together; longest time spent together was their first sex scene. This lack of time together gave them an insta-love feel, especially with Magnus. I really liked Magnus and Tara separately. Magnus was strong and sweet with him being the leader of the Pit Warriors and allowing servant women to sleep in his room to avoid Alwyn men wanting to drag them to their beds. Even though she grew up in a convent, Tara was strong and sure of herself in her new environment; she was a pretty self-assured confident heroine. I just didn't have long or enough scenes with the two to grow in love with them as a couple.
Most of the story was about Magnus trying to position himself to learn whom and why betrayed his Kincaid father and while we don't get a complete answer, I imagine the missing third brother will have his own book and we'll get the final answers there. The answers we do get are extremely rushed at the end, I got whiplash from all the reveals and switching of sides. The secondary characters and their storylines were a bit untidy, the Alwyn son Hugh, Tara is supposed to be betrothed to, was over-the-top bad and kind of an empty vessel along with his mother and the sudden reveal of the part she played in it all. Magnus' friend Chissolm, the only Pit Warrior we are really introduced to, makes one or two shallow appearances. I thought Tara and Magnus were fully fleshed out characters but their supporting cast was lacking.
If you're looking for more heat and descriptive sex scenes in your historicals they can be found here but the emotional components I found lacking.
'The Rebel of Clan Kincaid' by Lily Blackwood is book two in the "Highland Warrior" series. This is the story of Magnus and Tara. I have read the previous book but I do think you can read this as a standalone book. We did learn in book one "The Beast of Clan Kincaid" that Magnus was really Faelan Kincaid the second son of the Kincaid family. Magnus was lost when his family was taken over and killed by enemies. Magnus didn't remember his previous family and only thought of himself as a bastard son of Laird Alwyn. When he learns from his brother who he is he joins in taking down Laird Alwyn to revenge his family death who Laird Alwyn was a part of. Tara has been taken by her guarding who is a very mean man to Laird Alwyn clan. Tara is to marry Laird Alwyn older Legitimate son who is also cruel.. in addition he was to marry her sister who now is dead. So Magnus and Tara are drawn to each other and both wanting to solve the mystery of her sister death. In addition Magnus wants to save Tara from marring his 'half brother'. Another great book by Ms. Blackwood "My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read."
This book was more romantic than The Beast of Clan Kincaid and I loved that! Magnus is swoon worthy. This series is so good! Its light, sexy, full of romance and intrigue. Can’t wait to read book 3!
And it is official. I am addicted...I drank in the words of this book and could not stop myself until I finished it. This hasn't happened to me in a long time, especially with recently released books. It felt so good to be sucked into a story where I didn't care that chores weren't done, my husband was hungry, and it was 2:00 in the afternoon and I was still in my pajamas. I had the "this-is-why-I-read-romance" feeling and I didn't want it to stop.
The Rebel of Clan Kincaid is the second book in Lily Blackwood's Highland Warrior series and while it was totally different than the first book, I thought this reading experience was better. I love how Blackwood's writing flows and unlike the first book in this series, the sex scenes felt more natural to me (my only complaint from Book 1). This story is about Magnus, who has grown up in the Alwyn clan thinking he is the bastard son of the laird, when really he is the second born son of the murdered Clan Kincaid. With this secret knowledge, which he learns in Book 1 and it is repeated in this tale, he wants bone-deep revenge. He bides his time among his enemy, gathering information that he and his brother Niall can use to finally gain justice.
Tara comes to the Alwyn clan to replace her dead sister as the betrothed of the Alwyn's son, Hugh. Hugh is vile and must have some sort of sociopathic illness. Magnus despises Hugh and when he has the opportunity to steal a kiss from Tara to spite Hugh, he does so. Shockingly for him, the kiss stirs something inside of him and he seeks more of Tara's company and quickly feels a connection to her. Now he is torn between a desire for revenge and a need to keep Tara safe.
This story had a lot of interesting elements that kept me turning pages. Unlike Book 1, there is not as much action in this story until the last few chapters and even then, it was more limited. This book is quieter and delves into family secrets, mental health, duty, forbidden love, and revenge. I loved the gothic feel and the pull between Magnus and Tara was strong. I had no idea how everything would work out---between the mystery of Tara's dead sister, the question of who was responsible for Laird Kincaid's murder, and the ongoing threat of Hugh and his desire to "possess" Tara, there was a never-ending supply of subtle intensity that sucked me in and wouldn't let go.
If you enjoyed the writing style in Book 1, it is just as vivid and flowing here. The only difference is the pacing. This story is more introspective, the characters have only stolen moments to develop their feelings, and the mystery is stretched out tautly to the very last chapter. There was no epilogue and for this I was disappointed. The end came quickly, and wrapped up easier than I expected, though Blackwood left some threads loose that I think will be reappearing in the final book of this trilogy. I have my guess of who the Warrior will be, and I think if I'm right, it will be a tense, power battle with a lot of emotion involved.
Overall, I thought this was an excellent read. There is some Highland politics involved, but no dry history, and I loved the mystery element that drew me in while never overshadowing the main romance. I'm already anticipating the third book. The Rebel of Clan Kincaid is going on my keeper shelf along with The Beast of Clan Kincaid. Highly recommended.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review!
SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT READ THE FIRST IN THE SERIES
This book starts off and continues even better than the first one. Magnus and Tara are on their way to my favourite couple list. I had really liked the character of Magnus from the first book and had hoped for a happy ending for him (before we saw the big twist!). Tara however makes her entrance with this book and has really earned my love and RESPECT. She manages to keep a cool head even in the most panic inducing situations. Although Magnus swears to protect her, she tries to rely on herself and tries to make the best use of her (most minimal) resources to try to escape.
I'm on a roll and want to grab the third book which unfortunately hasn't been published yet. The identity of the third brother isn't revealed in this book which definitely ups the suspense factor. I will (somehow) try to keep myself from reading the blurb of the third book which might reveal his identity because this suspense though torturous is delightful in its own way.
I won a free copy of this book through a Goodreads giveaway.
OK. Here we go. Words cannot describe how much I love this book and this series! It is absolutely amazing! It's got action, drama, romance, and suspense in just the right amounts. I actually read the last few chapters multiple times because I didn't want to be finished. I'm still not ready to move on. In all honesty, I am quite upset I have to wait until the end of next July for the next book in the series. Saddest face.
So if you aren't sure that this book is for you, trust me. Ignore that voice. Pick up this book. Read it. Love it. Say thank you.
You're very welcome.
P.S. This book was hot and steamy! Whew! *wipes brow* Cold shower alert! *fans herself*
I am absolutely and completely in love with this series!!! I couldn't put it down once I started it and read it straight through. I didn't finish it until 3AM, but it was totally worth it!
The first book was full of action to set the stage for the series. I LOVED it! Now, this second book in the series brings us the second brother and a less violent, more introspective book. Still just as wonderful as the first -- just different. The pace is just right, the characters are fully developed and the romance has the time it needs to develop -- well -- it is all JUST RIGHT!
At the end of the first book, Magnus found out that he wasn't really the bastard son of the Laird Alwyn. He was really the second son of Laird Kinkaid who was murdered (along with his wife and almost the entire clan) by the Laird Alwyn and others. That is repeated in this book as the Prologue.
Magnus has led an unhappy life because he's been miserably treated by his 'father' and 'half-brother'. Magnus has worked hard to become a warrior and has earned the respect of all of the other warriors in clan Alwyn. He's a natural leader and they follow him without question.
Upon learning of his true parentage and the treachery of Laird Alwyn, Magnus begins planning for revenge. He doesn't tell anyone -- not even his good friends. He uses his time to listen and learn whatever he can to be passed along to his brother Niall. His main goal is to manage to get a confession and to find out who the third party was in the death of his family and clan.
Tara Iverach, ward of the Earl of Buchan, has been confined to a nunnery since the death of her parents five years ago. Now, the Earl has betrothed her to Hugh, the heir to Laird Alwyn. She is to replace her sister who died mysteriously while betrothed to Hugh.
You'd think Tara would be a shy, retiring little thing after having been confined in a nunnery for five years, but she isn't. She's full of spunk and intelligence and once she's seen her new future family, she's determined to escape!
Magnus first meets Tara when her escort is attacked on the way from the nunnery to her new home with the Alwyn's. Magnus can't resist stealing a kiss from his half-brother's betrothed. Then, he can't forget her. Their attraction grows as they spend time talking through a barred window. Tara is kept locked in a tower and can't escape.
The ending was a little abrupt for me. Everything else was well paced and things had ample time to develop, but the ending just appeared. I could have been okay with that if there was an epilogue, but there wasn't. Personally, I think it should be a law that all romance novels MUST have an epilogue.
Now, I can't wait for the next book! I THINK I know who the next brother will turn out to be and I think that will turn out to make a whiz-bang ending for the series!
"I requested and received this book from the author at no cost to me and volunteered to read it; my review is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher."
This is the story of Tara and Magnus, who is really Faelen, son of the Kincaid. Evidently, this picks up right where book 1 in the series ends, but I read this as a stand alone and had NO trouble following along.
Most of the book was spent with Magnus trying to find out what happened to his real family and plotting to defeat Alwyn, or with Tara searching for answers about what happened to her sister Arabel. After all the searching and planning, I was a little disappointed at the climax. There was no battle. Maybe I just in the mood for some action LOL
Magnus and Tara were great characters. Magnus was strong and compassionate. He was smart and loyal. Tara, while initially afraid of Hugh, held her own and faced her fear. She took her future into her own hands and I loved it!
*thanks to the publisher for sharing a copy of this with me*
The Rebel of Clan Kincaid was a fantastic romance between a highlander out for revenge and a woman determined to gain her freedom.
Magnus was always told he was the bastard son of Laird Alwyn only to find out he’s the son of the murdered Laird Kincaid, the Alwyn’s sworn enemy. Biding his time within the safety of Alwyn’s walls as the Kincaid threat closes in, Magnus plots his revenge against the men that stole his birthright. When Tara Iverach arrives to marry Alwyn’s son Hugh, Magnus sees an opportunity to take something from the Alwyn. However, Magnus soon finds himself falling for Tara and will risk everything to keep her safe.
Magnus is struggling to come to terms with the fact that he’s the son of the murdered Laird Kincaid and not Alwyn’s bastard but he never lets his internal struggles stop him from working towards his revenge. He has an incredible hold over his temper and there were times I was amazed he didn’t snap at Alwyn or Hugh. Magnus is fiercely protective of those he cares about and does everything in his power to help his friends.
Tara has spent the last several years of her life separated from her sister in a priory as her guardian Earl Buchan had little use for her. When Tara’s sister Arabel dies, Tara is expected to take her place to wed the heir of Clan Alwyn with no time to grieve her loss. When no one will give her answers on how Arabel died, Tara decides to find out herself and refuses to accept anything less than the truth.
Magnus and Tara’s relationship develops very quickly almost to the point of being love at first sight except that they start to fall for each other before actually seeing one another. Thankfully even though Magnus set his sights on Tara for less than noble reasons, it becomes apparent very early on that he truly cares for her and just wants to help her escape her upcoming marriage. I loved that he wanted everything that happened between them to be her choice and strived to keep things in check until she gained her freedom. The physical scenes between them though are incredibly sexy and I loved any time the two were able to get alone.
Magnus’s plot to bring down Alwyn and Buchan was very satisfying to see. The author does an amazing job at getting you to hate the villains in these books and I was rooting from the start for them to be taken down. There were a few twists in the plan I didn’t see coming, but they worked well for the story and I loved how everything turned out. We do get a few scenes with Niall and Elspeth, the couple from the first book, and I loved getting to see them again.
The Rebel of Clan Kincaid ended up being just as enjoyable as the first book in the series and I’m excited to read the final book in the trilogy soon. I definitely recommend these books if you’re in the mood for some great highlander romance.

Unfortunately, the man he always thought to be true father never even recognized him as a true son or anyone that mattered. Until she see’s the beautiful man Magnus/Faelan truly is and they both seem to fall for each other fast and quickly. Yet it is never easy and not without misunderstandings, jealousy, mistaken betrayal and miscommunication. As complications are not uncommon with any new relationship. Especially for a love that is so deep and true to the core. Plus they are both fragile and trust isn't easy for either one of them. Both being deceived and betrayed and destroyed so recently and soon both under false pretenses and misconceptions come to very wrong results. Can it be fixed? You will have to read and see, I can tell you it was a fabulous story from start to finish! I absolutely and unequivocally loved this book!
Lily Blackwood does it again, in her second book in her fabulous “Highland Warrior” series, which I absolutely loved! The setting was magnificent, with phenomenal flow with breathtaking dialogue. In addition brilliant plotting, that I found myself holding my breath with anticipation, not knowing what could possibly happen next!
It's one of those rare stories that speeds up the heart rate with lots of oohs and sighing. Anytime I read a book in under 24 hours I know it is going to be a rare, special, original. unique, and exhilarating read. Filled with a phenomenal riveting adventure, drama, suspense, betrayal, intrigue, hatred, miscommunication, faith, trust and of course love and more…
You can't help but feel the empathy toward both the hero and heroine, plus hoping they get the true HEA that they both so richly deserve! After all each of them went through to survive. Will they? You will have to read this spectacular book to find out.
You can read as a stand alone book or in series order. I highly recommend you read both The Beast of Clan Kincaid, book #1 and this book, The Rebel of Clan Kincaid, book #2. As they are both exquisite and brilliant stories in my opinion. Plus so much more fun connecting the character dots!
I highly recommend this masterpiece of a novel “The Rebel of Clan Kincaid” by Lily Blackwood! It was an absolute treasure and delight to read!
I was given this e-arc from the publisher and have voluntarily left an honest review through netgalley.
**I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher. I am voluntarily leaving my review**
I was going to rate this book 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4, but decided that certain aspects of the story didn't work for me and decided to go with a 3 star rating. I thought the book was very well written and flowed perfectly, but I had a hard time believing that Magnus and Tara actually fell in love.
Tara has been sent to Burnbryde to be the bride of the laird's heir, Hugh - her sister's former betrothed. Tara learned of her sister's death and her impending betrothal at the same time. She has been in a convent since her parents died 5 years ago. Her sister was older and taken to court, their guardian the Earl of Buchan arranged for Arabel's wedding to Hugh of the clan Alwyn and upon her death decided that Tara would be Hugh's bride.
At about the same time, Magnus learns that he is actually one of the lost sons of the clan Kincaid and not the bastard son of the laird of Alwyn. He is consumed with the need for vengeance and conspires with his brother Niall to destroy Alwyn. He meets Tara when her carriage is attacked on the road to Burnbryde. He doesn't see her face, but demands a kiss as payment for rescuing her. He lets her believe that he is the son she is meant to marry. When the truth is revealed, Tara is hurt by the deception, but forgives Magnus and the two begin a friendship.
Tara has no desire to marry Hugh and has every intention of running away before the wedding, but he is desperate to find out what happened to her sister. Magnus agrees to help her escape, but asks her to be patient. These two fall into "insta-love" and in short order become intimate.
The next day Magnus leaves with the laird for four days of hunting and is eager to see Tara on his return, he is waylaid on his way to see her and when she goes looking for him and when she finds him, she is heartbroken by what she perceives as a betrayal. Magnus is not aware that Tara sought him out and is confused by her sudden coldness towards him. They make plans to go to a neighboring village together and Tara slips away when Magnus is talking with friends. Frantic to find her, he travels to his brother's holding and when he finds Tara there it is his turn to feel betrayed.
Things quickly escalate from this point and many truths are revealed. And while the story does not end in a cliff hanger, the ending felt incomplete. The last book perfectly set up this book, but this book gives no hint as to what is to come or if it is in fact over. Since there were 3 sons, I was expecting some sort of revelation regarding Cullen the youngest Kincaid only to be disappointed when there was no mention of him. ****WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD*** * * * The main reason I gave this book 3 stars was because the author again chose to use other women to cause discord between the H and h - she did the same in the last book, albeit in a different manner. This book also had a scene where the laird's mistress grabs Magnus' junk, this reminded me of the bathtub scene in the previous book, and just like that book, it added nothing to story in my opinion. In this book, I found the scene where Tara discovers Magnus with two women in his bed to be ridiculous, I know why they were there, but I could not accept that he had to be in bed with them or that they all had to be undressed. Nor could I accept that Magnus was angry that Tara believed the worst. He never once conceded that what she witnessed would lead just about anyone to believe the worst. And to be honest, I think she let him off the hook why too easy - if it was me I would demand to know why he had to be in the bed with them - he couldn't sleep on the floor? He couldn't have slipped away after settling them in his room with his men to watch over them? I get that only he could have saved them from the initial confrontation, but once they went to his room, I can't believe that he had to stay the night with them. So, that just pissed me off and apparently I am not as understanding as most reviewers.
Even though I didn't really love this book, it was still a good read and it was hard to put down. I don't believe that I would read this book again, but I will definitely read another book by this author, and hopefully it is about Cullen, the missing brother.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was an okay read. I liked Magnus/Faelan better than Niall from book one, and both main characters were likeable, but I didn't feel any emotional connection to them. Their moments together were few and far between, and there was so much going on with the outer plot that their romance was sort of pushed to the side, especially seeing as both of them knew things about the situation that the other didn't and they never really actually knew each other. The romance being pushed to the side for the plot normally wouldn't be such a big deal, except that, this is, you know, a romance novel, so it was a bit of a strange choice to forgo romance development for plot development. It was a bit insta-lovey, and Tara came across as very innocent and child-like, which gave the romance overall a little bit of an uncomfortable feel. Neither of these things were done to the extent that I hated it and didn't want to read, but it was enough to be a bit off putting. There were a few other things in the book that were also just a bit off putting to me - particularly the gossiping/twittering maids (this is just such an overused, misogynistic stereotype that never serves the plot well) and the whole thing with the girls in his chamber (this could've been done in a way that wasn't so off putting, but the sexual tone it was given made it uncomfortable). I think this book had some unnecessary sexist elements/undertones that book one didn't have, and I always find that off putting. The resolution was also way too easy and rushed, and left me feeling unsatisfied. This wasn't a bad read, per se, but I've read similar books/other books in the genre that are much better, so it was a bit of a let down for me.
Once again Lily Blackwood has written a swoonworthy romance full of secrets, mystery, and true love! I fell in love right along with the two main characters, making me wish their story didn't end with this book but continued on in the next. Though this book had a darker tone than the first book in the series, it was highly enjoyable, and I read late into the night with unstoppable eagerness to see how everything would turn out.
Tara Iverach has lived in a priory for the past five years following the death of her parents, receiving occasional letters from her elder sister. When her guardian shows up one morning and announces her betrothal to the son of the Chief Alwyn, she also receives news that her sister has died. Stricken by grief, she plans to escape the betrothal as soon as possible. However, on her way to the Alwyn keep, her escort is attacked, and she is saved by a man who claims to be her betrothed. Tara soon learns the man is actually Magnus, the bastard son of the Chief Alwyn, who is the opposite of his cruel brother, Hugh. Magnus instantly feels an attraction to Tara, but he must fight to conceal his desire for her even while he works to save her from her unwanted betrothal. For he has a much larger goal to in mind - avenging his true parent's deaths and taking his rightful place as Faelan Kincaid, the Rebel of Clan Kincaid.
The romance between Tara and Magnus was breathtaking! I felt every soft touch and heard every whispered endearment as they fell in love under the moonlight. Tara, being trapped in a tower during her stay, was scared and unsure of who she could trust upon arriving at the Alwyn keep, but Magnus was always there for her. He was so gentle, so concerned for her well-being, and it was quickly apparent just how good of a person he was. He put others before himself, no matter the danger, and he cared more for justice than obeying a cruel lord. Although some of his actions were foolish and led to a misunderstanding between he and Tara, he admitted when he was wrong and didn't let it stop them from having a happily ever after. Chivalry at its finest.
I cannot wait for the next Lily Blackwood book. I imagine it will be about the third missing Kincaid brother, Cullen, and my heart already goes pitter-patter when I see the name. It will be wonderful to see all three brothers reunited and find happiness.
**I received a free copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.**
I just finished reading the first book in this series. I loved it !!! At the end there was a sneak peek at this one and I enjoyed it so much that I immediately added it to my TBR list. I hardly ever do that so obviously it was promising. I can't wait.

This is the second book in the Highland Warrior series by Lily Blackwood. I fell in love with the first book in this series and was so happy to get my hands on this one. This is the second book in the Highland Warrior series by Lily Blackwood. It is exciting and passionate and I hated to put it down. It was just a wonderful read that I enjoyed from beginning to end.
I absolutely love this author's writing style and the way she pulled me into this story / series. The intriguing thread continues to follow the mystery surrounding the Kincaid Clan and the three lost brothers and heirs that were torn apart during a brutal betrayal. In the first book the eldest brother, Niall found love and won the first round in a complex game of vengeance for his people. We also learned that his rival, Magnus , was also his missing brother Faelan. Magnus was surprised at the discovery but vowed to help his brother in the quest to avenge their family by continuing his role as a bastard son of the man who helped to murder his family. In doing so he met the love of his life who was trapped in a dangerous situation, but is hesitant to help her because it could endanger his mission. Tara Iverach's found herself trapped in an impossible situation and desiring the only man who could help her escape. I really liked Tara. She was a strong and smart and tenacious. She was never fooled by the people who tried to pull it over on her and she never gave up either.
This story was loaded with surprises, and with the best ones coming toward the end. It was heart touching and passionate and mysterious. I absolutely loved it and there is another brother out there somewhere and I would love it even more should he turn out to be a certain someone who we met in this story. So looking forward to the next book !
The Rebel of Clan Kincaid by Lily Blackwood Highland Warrior #2
In book two of the series Magnus is told that he is someone entirely different than he has always been lead to believe he is. Why? To keep him save because the man who is REALLY his father was killed by the man he THINKS sired him. Add onto that he finds out that he has two brothers that he can’t remember and one despicable half-brother that he is not related to at all. What does he want? Revenge!
Tara is on her way to marry despicable Hugh and is not happy about it. She is less happy when she is accosted and robbed while on the road and then kissed by the man who saves her. She is the sister of the woman who died suspiciously while married to despicable Hugh and she wants answers related to that death AND she definitely does NOT want to marry Hugh!
There was plenty happening in this book with stolen kisses, fights, a damsel saved, friendships made, evil men thwarted, escapes, intrigue, murder and steamy scenes BUT for some reason the interaction between Magnus/Faelan and Tara seemed too abrupt and highly unlikely and it left me disbelieving. Everything was neatly tied up with problems solved easily without too much worry or bother and at the end I wondered whether or not the third son, Cullan was still alive and if so where in the world he might be. After meeting Robert Buchan I wonder if he might get a book of his own. I also wonder if the men who killed The Kincaid will ever pay for the crimes they committed.
Did I enjoy the book? Yes Would I read it again? Probably not Do I want to know what happens in book three? Definitely Did I like Magnus and Tara? Yes Would I read other books by this author? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC. This is my honest review.
Lily Blackwood has found her niche with this wonderful Scottish series! I loved the first book in this series, “The Beast of Clan Kincaid” and this one is just as good, if not better. I’m really looking forward to the third brother’s story in “Warrior of Clan Kincaid” coming next year. These books can be read on their own but I think you’ll get more background if you read them in order.
Tara Iverach has lived in a convent since the death of her parents. Her older sister, Arabel, had been sent to the Scottish court by their guardian the Earl of Buchan. He arrives at the convent to tell her that she is to be wed to the son of Chief Alwyn as her sister has died. She also discovers that he has taken their family’s lands for his own.
Magnus believes he’s the bastard son of Laird Alwyn who hates the Kincaids. His childhood friend, Elspeth, now married to Niall Kincaid helps him accept that he is Faelan Kincaid, thought murdered when his father was. He returns to the Alwyns, as Magnus, to discover what part they played in his parents’ deaths.
Tara has no desire to marry Hugh, but is very attracted to Magnus. And he to her. While discovering love, there are many plots and secrets to deal with. I will not spoil this wonderful story by revealing them. If you like Scottish romance, you will love this book. I couldn’t put it down!
I really enjoyed this one and was thinking it would be my fave of the set, right up until all of the communication break down between Magnus and Tara. Starting with her hearing/talking to the 2 girls in Magnus' room who lead her to think wrong thoughts about Magnus, understandably, but then it all stacks and spirals.
Once all of that mess gets figured out things are better between them again and I did enjoy these two together, as it starts a friendship and grows.
I was a little lost with Magnus' step brother until the end when things make a bit more sense but he is still evil even from childhood, but I did have a bit of compassion for him in the end.
There is a lot that happens in this story and enough action and plot to keep things moving and interesting to the end.
What a great book and a very good author. She writes such a good story with strong lovable and bad characters too. You just have to turn the pages until you finish it and then feel sorry it's over. A sure sign it's a wonderful book. Can't wait to read the 3rd book!!!!
In this second installment of Lily Blackwood’s Highland Warrior series, our hero, Magnus’s, life changes the day he finds that he’s not the bastard son of the Laird Alwyn, as he has always believed. Rather he is Faelan Braewick, the second son of the unjustly slain Laird Kinkaid. Now, his anger rules him, and he vows retribution against Alwyn, one of the men who plotted against and murdered his true family.
Tara Iverach has been cloistered at a priory since her parents’ death five years before. Her guardian, the powerful Earl of Buchan, unexpectedly appears, and her life, too, is abruptly changed. He informs her that her older sister Arabel is dead, and that she will travel to Alwyn’s castle and wed the laird’s son in her sister’s place. Tara is devastated that her only family is gone. Traveling to her new home, she chances to meet Magnus. Although the attraction between them is undeniable, he turns out to be the wrong son of Laird Alwyn.
This beautiful love story is complex and well-written. The plot twists surprise; the conflicts are real and touching. The hero and heroine both have goals to achieve that are imperative to their personal human development. But their growing love for each other threatens those objectives. One of my favorite things about Lily Blackwood’s stories is that she not only delivers a lovely, sensuous romance, but she maintains the characters’ honor while doing so. No copping out here.
Although this book is a stand-alone story unto itself, it continues the story line from The Beast of Clan Kinkaid, the first in the Kinkaid series, and I can’t wait for book three. I want to see the Kinkaids fully avenged and the three brothers whole again as a family.
Unfortunately, I find myself not liking this one as much as the first. I found that something was... missing.
We've already known the hero of this book would be another missing Kincaid brother - there was a snippet at the end of book 1. It was really unexpected, I never saw that coming.
I felt like this one was dragged out with certain things, while others - toward the end - were wrapped up neatly and fast. As I said, that something, that climax, was missing. Even though I finished it in one day, it wasn't because I devoured it. I honestly just wanted it to end. Which is sad, for me. I love devouring books and hate when I'm interrupted. With this one, I kept finding things that would interrupt me.
What can I say? There was a lot of built-up with the revenge the two Kincaid brothers were plotting against the murderers of their clan, but it led to pretty much nothing - I skipped pages, reading a sentence here, another there. Why? It was quickly solved.
There was drama, some misunderstanding between the main characters. I didn't really connect with them, by the end of it, it was all meh.
All in all, I am going to read book three.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC copy of this book through Netgalley. My rating is 3 stars.
When it comes to Scottish romance I am all on board on reading one, I try to stick with the authors that I know. But reading the synopsis for The Rebel of Clan Kincaid penned by Lily Blackwood, I decided to give it ago. I am so happy that I did. The Rebel of Clan Kincaid was a fantastic story of treachery and revenge.
Magnus has always known that no matter what he accomplished he would always be his father bastard son. But the surprise was on him, when he learns that he wasn’t a bastard at all and that the clan he was raised to hate he was a part of. He set out to avenge the wrong. Along the way, it comes upon Magnus to save a young woman virtue and life before both is taken by Laird’s Alwyn son.
The Rebel of Clan Kincaid was an exciting read from start to finish. All the characters that you meet in this adventure story was well developed. Lily Blackwood truly knows how to spin a tell of intrigue.
It should be noted that even though this is book #2 of the Highland Warriors series, this book could be read as a stand-along.
The Rebel Of Clan Kincaid is my first book by Lily Blackwood, but won't be my last. Ms Blackwood's impressive writing had me hooked from page one. The Rebel Of Clan Kincaid is a well written, action filled book. Magnus and Tara's story is a fantastic historical romance that is loaded with drama, suspense and sizzle. The characters are perfect for this story and my favorite part of the book. I enjoyed reading The Rebel Of Clan Kincaid and look forward to reading more from Lily Blackwood in the future. The Rebel Of Clan Kincaid is book 2 of the Highland Warrior Series but can easily be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book that I received from NetGalley.
I did enjoy this story, just not as much as book 1. This story tented to focus more on the political struggles and the clan history and the disagreements between the Kiincaid's and Tara's guardian - Buchan and the mystery of the death of Tara's sister while she was in the protection of Laird Alywn awaiting to marry his son, rather than romance, I felt the story dragged a little with all the past history over load. The second half of the story though had a lot more romance between Tara and Magnus and the story moved along a bit faster but I felt the characters didn't have a lot of chemistry together and were rather flat. But still the story concept was good and I'll be reading book 3 when it is ready.
Having absolutely loved book 1 of this series, my Kindle barely had time to finish downloading book 2 before I dove right back into the thick of things between the feuding Kincaid and Alwyn clans. Folks, it picks up exactly where I hoped, Magnus’s reaction to some life changing news that sets him on an inevitable warpath seeking justice and revenge.
This now rebel among the Alwyn clan finds himself fighting for two causes, the afore mentioned one and for the life and love of Mistress Tara, the recently arrived, reluctant, soon to be bride of his supposed next in line laird half-brother, Hugh, who just happens to be an abusive, womanizing, drunkard, poor excuse for a man that may or may not have killed Tara’s older sister, Arabel, the unlucky previous fiancee Tara is replacing. Yeah, that’s a mouthful alright, isn’t it?
Though being protective of women comes second nature to Magnus, which unfortunately at times is misunderstood, nothing gets his blood boiling hotter than magma than Hugh’s lecherous behavior/actions toward Tara. With secrets/whispers swirling around the sudden death of Arabel, it’s no surprise Magnus doesn’t want Tara anywhere near him. The instant attraction and pounding heart he’s never experienced before from just being near her only adds to his conflicted emotions as he patiently plans and waits for his retribution to be dished out as Tara’s unwelcome nuptials approach.
With lots of pondering, pacing, planning, and even hand wringing, the story line does move along at a fairly slow rate. A lot of time is spent getting ready for the inevitable showdown, Tara’s dilemma in dealing with Hugh while hoping to find out what really happened to Arabel, and the main couple’s stolen steamy moments together once they finally give in to their attraction. It isn’t until about 70% when the action drama kicks in. Not that setting a slow pace is a bad thing. It certainly leaves more time for an emotional connection to occur between the main couple.
Unfortunately, the series of misunderstandings that eventually happened, which lead to feelings of betrayal, had me second guessing how willing this couple were going to be to fight to stay together. Meaning, at one point I thought they were just going to give up and walk away. Niall’s surprise solution in solving one major problem certainly steered them in the right direction. As well as Magnus’s romantic gesture reinforcing that decision.
The final answers regarding Arabel felt a little too convenient and caused me to question Hugh’s nefarious reputation altogether, mainly what drove him to drink. Yeah, I know I’m wishing for the moon for he certainly seemed evil. I kept hoping to find him possible of redemption though. It must be the avid mafia romance reader coming out in me.
With this series already inclined to bring back the dead, I must admit when a character is killed off I automatically wonder if they really are. Again, I don’t necessarily consider that a bad thing, as I like unexpected twists and turns in my romantic plots.
Well, here’s to hoping I’ve shed some insight to help you decide if this book is for you. I’m assuming Cullen, the missing other brother, will get his story told next. I’m looking forward to it, as well. The author’s writing does flow and keeps me fully engaged, so I definitely want to continue reading this series.
