One of the most important books in the series, but I found it a slow burn this time.

I had forgotten how amazing this book is.

Dødens Have (Death's Garden) is the 17th book in The Legend of the Ice People and without a doubt the most supernatural to date.

As I hinted to in the review of the previous book, the events of this book shd a little ore light on the mystery that is Tengel the Evil. And how he managed to get eternal life, power over everyone and everything ... and oh yeah, cursed his descendants for many, many generations to come.

The story revolves largely around the unknown child of Vendel, a daughter he has never met. Ingrid and Dan's son Daniel gets a chance to go to the remote world that Vendel visited in book 15, when he, after yet another war between the Russians and the Swedes, finds himself in enemy territory - and this chance he takes.

Shira, daughter of Vendel, is ever so slightly idealised for my tastes, but as she is supposed to be the very embodiment of Good in order to undertake her enermous and mythical task, I don't see how she could be anything else.

Her journey toward, what I assume the English translation would call something along the lines of the fountain of life or sometihng (in Danish, it is "livets kilder", literally "spring/fountain of life"). Anyways, her journey towards this fountain is what makes this book so all-round magical and supernatural. It is not a physical journey, but a journey through one's mind, through one's past life and it is not an easy one.

Perhaps some of the usually beautiful descriptions of Sandemo gets neglected in this book in favour of the story, which has a tendency to become tell rather than show, but honestly, I hardly notice that, because so much happens and there's just enough description to draw the reader in.

I give extra points for the theological discussions, there's some very interesting points brought forward, especially thorugh the fact that this remote tribe of people live in much closer contact with nature and have a very different look on spirits and gods. I'm not saying it is better, I'm saying it is interesting. And they bring an extra dimension to an already exciting book. Definitely one of my favourites.

The Garden of Death
Daniel Lind of Ice People goes alone for a journey to the land of the Nenets people on the coast of Kara Sea. There he will meet Shira, Vendel's daughter, who belongs to the choosen ones - she is supposed to break the curse laid on the Ice People clan. First Shira has to pass many unhuman tests that shape up in long and terrifing journey through the garden of Death.

3.5 out of 5.

This book had potential to be the best Ice People book. And I really wanted to like it, but it fell flat in one major part, and that being me hating "enemies to lovers". I know I can't complain about a book trope in a book that was released in the 80's long before BookTok and BookTube started loving tropes more than the actual books. But it is in here, and the love interest, Mar, I hated him. Throughout all of this book, I wanted Mar to die a horrible death. And he is literally the stereotypical "bad boy love interest" in every "enemies to lovers" I've had the displeasure of knowing the existance of.

I also think this book would have maybe worked a bit better if it was about Villemo and in her arc of the story, as the finale maybe. Because the story here, and the idea, is superb. Easily the best concept for an ice people novel since maybe book 7 (which was another disappointment)

But what did I like?
Well how paranormal it got. All of the trials Shira goes through, amazing. The best part of the book. The stuff about Daniel was fun. Nothing to add there.
The location was also wonderful. I love spending time in Margit Sandemo's Russia.

I'm looking forward to see what the next book in the series has to offer!

Zostawiam dwie gwiazdki.

Byle do przodu.

Kolejne przeczytana (wysłuchana) książka Margit Sandemo. Autorka tym razem opowiada o podróży Daniela Lind z Ludzi lodu. Wyrusza on w daleką podróż do kraju Nieńców nad brzegami Morza Karskiego.

This book is about Daniel and Shira. Mainly about Shira. We carry on from where the last book left us. This book is filled with an interesting adventure which will have a huge impact on the future events. More mysteries will be solved, I love seeing the plot move forward :)

Three words - Oh my god! This is the best book that I've read so far in this series. I love how its set in Siberia and how different it is from all the previous books. Shira and Mar are both really intriguing characters. And the adventure is so exciting. I couldn't put this book down and read the whole thing in one sitting.

One of the most existing books in the saga, you will begin with low pulse but it will build up and stay that way through the entire book. When you are done you will sit there for a while thinking ''Wow what the hell kind of super adventure I just read about...'' The tribes in the Siberia are very well described and interesting to read about. I wanted to go too Siberia because of this book!
