Get ready for adventure! Disney’s beloved Princesses have returned in this hilarious collection of issues 1–4 of the Disney Princess comic series from Joe Books. Featuring laugh-out-loud stories from the worlds of Ariel, Belle, Cinderella, Tiana, Pocahontas, Rapunzel, and more, this charming collection will make all your dreams come true.
Okay, so I may be a bit biased, seeing as Amy Mebberson is one of my favorite artists. But I think any fan of Disney's animated canon would find her illustrations here both charming and filled with adorable details.
That attention to detail and charm extends to the writing as well. These writers know and understand the Princesses, to a depth not usually seen in 'Disney Princesses' merchandise. There, they are perfect exemplars of femininity or merely gorgeous fashion plates for their iconic dresses. Here, on the other hand, they are individuals, each one different from the others, just as they are in their films. (And some, like Snow White and Aurora, are even better developed here than in their films!) Mulan's determination, Ariel's flightiness, Cinderella's kindness, Snow White's innocence, Merida's enthusiasm, Pocahontas' spirit, Aurora's compassion, Belle's intelligence, Tiana's practicality, Jasmine's style, and Rapunzel's optimism are all on display here.
But a comic strip can't just display each Princess' admirable qualities. It has to be funny, too. Amy and her co-writers have a way of pulling out each Princess's unique quirks and foibles to provide fodder for humor, while still maintaining their dignity and essential qualities. Every gag feels organic to the characters, not forced. That's harder to do than it sounds. And it's not just the Princesses -- Genie, Prince Philip, Sebastian, Chien Po, Gus and Jaq, Lumiere, and many others are featured throughout the book with the same attention to characterization and authenticity.
Overall, I can't recommend this volume enough to fans of Disney feature animation, especially those of us adults who've grown up with these characters in our lives. It humanizes the Princesses in a way Princess merchandise rarely does, while providing much-needed extra time with some beloved characters.
Cute! I like her Pocket Princesses comics better, but it's still kind of fun to see more of the daily lives of the various princesses. Also, there's a comic about Rajah trying to sleep with Jasmine that is pretty fucking perfect.
I'm not always a fan of the Disney Princess franchise, but I loved Amy Mebberson's "Pocket Princesses" webcomic. Although this, being a licensed Disney product, does not have the princesses interacting with each other, it has the same adorable, sly humor while answering questions such as does The Beast shed (he does), how does Rapunzel sleep with all that hair (oddly), and whether Aurora and Philip's horse ever get along. (It also confirms that Lucifer doesn't die at the end of "Cinderella," which relieved a little childhood trauma, so that was a nice bonus.) Plenty of familiarity with the films through "Brave" is required to really get all of the jokes, but for whatever the age of the Disney fan, this is truly a delight.
While the illustrations are excellent, it lacks what makes Mebberson's comic strip so special - the princess' interactions with each other, with all their quirks.
I adore Amy Mebberson's Pocket Princesses, and bought this hoping for more of the same. Of course, as a couple of these reviews mentioned, the princesses really can't interact with one another in this series, which is part of the charm for me.
Some of the strips in this collection are incredibly cute, but in others the stories went on just a bit too long. When I bought this I couldn't decide whether it was for me or for Mini-Me, but I just can't see keeping this one in my collection - and she loves me reading them to her, even when she doesn't get half the jokes. :P
Additional note: this book should get some sort of an award for best sound effects. I don't have it handy to cite my favourites, but there are some awesomely creative ones in there.
I was expecting this book to be the Disney princess movies told in comic book form but that was no where near what this was. Instead this was just random comic strips about the princesses. Some of them were funny but many of them weren't. Many of the comic strips didn't make sense or made the princesses or princes look really stupid. I liked the idea of this book but wish they had been done better and been more true to the characters.
I’d give this five stars, except the writing is so boring, it’s almost a chore to read. I’m sure young readers would enjoy it, and it’s a great introductory book for any young comic book reader, but it holds little appeal story-wise to me.
I’ll be honest, I bought this solely for the artwork, and that’s where this book gets its stars. Gorgeous, appealing work! I’m happier just flipping through and admiring the panels than actually reading it.
The 2nd half of the 4th collection wouldn't load for me, but that's the fault of my phone or Libby, not the book.
The comics were cute. A few of the longer ones lost my attention, but overall I really enjoyed them. They were cute and funny, and perfect little snippets to read while waiting for my daughter's bus or for supper to cook. Absolutely adorable!
This book is aboslutely adorable!! The cartoons are so cute!! The princesses are all utter adorable! The storylines were pretty fun and made me crack a smile often. Amy Mebberson did a great job! If you are a Disney fan, check this out, if not for the adorable illustrations!!
I actually laughed out loud at a lot of these. This book was phenomenal. As usual, the artistry was gorgeously well done. If you're a Disney fan then I highly recommend this. I'm such a fan of Amy Mebberson's work online and this book did not disappoint. I can't wait to read Volume II!
These were really cute! Some were funny and most at least brought a smile to my face. I actually used this as a wake-up starting book for a readathon as I am not very focused when I first get up. This helped wake me up and put me in a great mood for the day. You can read just one or two at a time or the whole book, or anything in between. Most strips are 4-12 panels. A few are a bit longer but all are fast, playful reads with a good balance of the different princesses. I loved this and am eager to read more in the future! Great are and stories, lots of color! All ages!!
Really cute art! It's a collection of short comic strips and a lot of them made me chuckle. I loved reading more about the princess's life that weren't seen in the movies. My favorite ones were Aurora, Cinderella, and Ariel, but I'm bias because they're my favorite princesses. Oh! And Merida!
3 stars ⭐️ is for the writing not the artwork. Artist is wonderful and the general idea is cute but the comic strips are very dull and most of them aren’t funny. Granted I’m an adult, so I’m sure a kid would like it a lot more.
