Omg!! I was so happy to read this novella about The Hammer that Walks and Goat!! This is when the Vagrant and Harm leave her and goat for a little bit.

We have a sweet little boy named Dally that befriends Hammer and certain chaos ensues. We also get a good backstory on Hammer.

I loved this and needed it right now. I love Hammer and Goat BFF’s forever 😃

*
Dally waves and runs off, excitement carrying him quickly away.
Not long after, the goat appears at her side again. The Hammer strokes her ear. 'You like?'
The goat bleats, firm. She does not.
The Hammer chuckles, moves her hand down to the goat’s back instead.

*
The room is not as she left it. Their bag of supplies lies on its side, like a dying creature vomiting its insides across the floor; a stream of half chewed things, still wrapped.
'Goat?'
The goat appears to be asleep.
'Goat?'
The goat looks up, an innocent expression belied by a dirty mouth.
The Hammer points. 'Bad goat.'
The goat snorts and The Hammer shakes her head, going to where she has laid out her armour. Pieces are held up, touched together, angles and flexibility played with.
The goat goes back to sleep.

Happy Reading!

I'm so happy Peter wrote this! We, all of us who've read The Vagrant (and The Malice) love the Hammer and we love the goat. You've likely heard us yapping about one or t'other. Well this satisfies our needs of both of those characters in one wonderful short story.

Action. Tick.
Humour. Tick.
Emotion. Tick tick tick.
Cinematic visuals in your mind - always a tick with Newman.

Have you read it? < Insert tick ASAP!

If you haven't read The Vagrant, then read that first, because this runs alongside that.

Now I want more...

I was sad when The Hammer That Walks left the Vagrant's story, so it was nice to find out what she did while recovering during "The Vagrant". The Hammer was one of my favourite characters in that story, and getting some backstory now was good. And the goat is still ornery and hungry!

Spinof Koze iz knjige Skitalica.
Da. Svestan sam kako zvuči ta rečenica. Zvuči savršeno. :D

I find The Hammer an intriguing character so I was very pleased to read more about her background and character.
Somehow I find Peter Newman his writing confusing, in a good way. It keeps me interested and trying to figure out what he means. The image that is created in my mind is disturbing and fascinating. Very different from the worlds I've read about until now.
The only problem I have with this short story is that it's just too short!
I am looking forward to 2017 and reading The Seven...

After reading the Vagrant I so wanted to see more of The Hammer that walks, so this short story had me chomping at the bit.

It is, in my opinion, a beautiful piece of fiction. It would have been so easy for Peter to write a smash and crash story where The Hammer hammers everything, and that would have been great. But the emotion in this story is stunning, especially given the extremely limited dialogue one would expect from a mutated killing machine, and, well . . . a goat.

It has been some time since I read The Vagrant but I soon caught up with the particulars of the world it is set in, and this was accomplished with no overly complex explanations (info dumping). On that note, the writing is impressive. The present tense can be a little jarring to some but in this I found it flowed with no interruption to the plot.

The action is exciting and the pace seesaws in way that leaves you breathless but not lost.

In short, I love this story and you should definitely read it if you enjoyed The Vagrant.

Screw that, even if you didn't/haven't read The Vagrant you must read this NOW!

When I read Peter Newman’s debut The Vagrant two years ago, I completely fell in love with the Goat. The other characters were great, the story was wonderful, the writing style fabulous, but the goat was what won my heart. Thus a story featuring Goat and the amazing the Hammer that Walks as well, was an immediate buy.

And though it took me a bit to actually read The Hammer and the Goat, it not only re-affirmed my love for the Goat, but it also made me love the Hammer even more than I already did. In the space of about forty pages Newman not only manages to give us the Hammer’s origin story, we also see how she finds her softer, vulnerable side and how she thinks about what she has become and who she wants to be.  Her infernal taint will never be gone, but she doesn’t have to be a monster anymore. Her connection to the young boy, Dally, was touching, especially her consternation when she realises that he isn’t frightened by her, but actually thinks she is somewhat of a hero.

Having taken so long between reading The Vagrant and its sequel The Malice, The Hammer and the Goat was a perfect way to get reacquainted with the world of the series and Newman’s writing style. Whether you’re a fan of the Goat or not, this novelette is a great refresher for those reading the series, and it is also a taster for those who have yet to start it.

It was nice seeing another side to the Hammer. She was a good solid character in The Vagrant and this was a good insight into her life before and during becoming Usurperkin

What a delightful little story! This takes place when The Vagrant and Harm go off on a rescue mission. The Hammer that Walks and the goat are left behind for a bit and they manage to get up to a little trouble. I admit that it made me cry a tiny bit.

The Hammer goes back to the garden. Three times she adds to the load in her hands before the offering is accepted.

It is not easy to fit the whole bundle into the goat's mouth but both are stubborn and in the end, the stalks are wedged into place, protruding several feet either side of her jaws.

These are two characters that I really love.

This is a fun short story read featuring the Hammer, the Goat and a young boy. The story is primarily from the perspective of the Hammer. The reader gets learn about how she (The Hammer is a she) came to be in her present physical state. She and the Goat have this odd relationship. The Goat is still independent and does its own thing. The Hammer and the Goat are in a small village. While most people try to ignore Hammer (because she has a foul temper), a young boy likes the Hammer and wants to be friends. The Hammer tries not to encourage the boy but to no avail.

There's a bit off the oddness that flows over from the book. For me though, the heart of story is the subtleties in the attachment between the Hammer and the boy and Hammer and the Goat.

A delightful quick read!

Originea personajului The Hammer şi câteva aventuri în căutarea încăpăţânatei The Goat. O povestire ok, fără tensiune şi fără să ofere prea multe în plus. Completează însă un capitol din primul volum. Cam scump totuşi 3,5 dolari ptr atât.

A great companion novella, The Hammer and the Goat picks up about halfway through The Vagrant and gives us some much needed backstory to the infamous character, The Hammer that Walks. Of course, the goat is around to give some lighter tones but this is really about The Hammer and how she came to be. There is also a present story that just adds to Newman's ability to create monsters unlike any you have seen before.

Being only about 41 pages in length, there isn't a ton to this piece, but it's a great read for anyone who has read The Vagrant. I highly recommend picking it up, especially seeing that The Malice comes out soon!

Oh, I'm glad I saw this in my library, I kinda forgot about it. Happy to be brought back.

GOAT! 🐐 And The Hammer! 🔨 ❤️❤️❤️

Good short story, giving more depth and insight into The Hammer's upbringing while also trying to find Goat. Lure the goat with food, don't pull her ears.

The Hammer was just a child. She still is. She didn't choose to become this. Her 'whys' were never answered.

'They are children in the bodies of monsters, pumped full of rage and hate, freed of rules and set loose on a broken world.'

Four years old. Body covered in metal armor, literally riveted through her skin...

"It is only when they have lowered the helmet into place that the tears fall. Unseen, unfelt, they do not count." My heart 😢 💔

But then the comedy of chasing around GOAT 🤣😂

I gotta finish the rest of this series, I HAVE MISSED IT!!

No kidding around, this definitely floats my goat.

A short companion story that runs concurrently with the similarly excellent The Vagrant, this tale lets us spend a little extra time with two superb characters from The Vagrant; The Hammer that Walks and the constantly entertaining goat.

The goat provides many of the lighter moments, both here and in the parent novel, brightening a dark and nightmarish world that we're exploring.

It's difficult to explain how fascinating The Hammer is as a character without providing spoilers, but this successfully expands upon that backstory and makes you genuinely care about a walking instrument of destruction.

You need to read The Vagrant before picking this up, but once you have The Hammer and the Goat is not to be missed

Crazy how Peter Newman made me feel bad for the Hammer that Walks, but I'm glad I read this story, even if it made her fate that much more tragic 😭

A wonderful short story that fills in some gaps and reveals some backstory to a character from The Vagrant.
The Hammer, there's a lot more to her, and this story will reveal her past.

Read this straight reading after The Vagrant for best enjoyment.

A construção da Hammer That Walks é incrível.

Book title says it all, really.

A side story to The Vagrant. It takes place after the main characters temporarily leave the Hammer and goat behind, and ends when they return. The focus is on the goat wandering off and then the Hammer wandering off after it.

The Hammer makes a young friend and there's some insight into the Hammer's past which leads into the climax. Not great but not entirely boring either. It's a decent supplementary story to a book I found wildly confusing but enjoyable.

This novelette, published in 2016, is a story involving the two titular characters with events occurring parallel to the storyline of The Vagrant. While the Hammer is recuperating from removal of her armour, she remembers herself as a child and her encounter with the Usurper. The Goat escapes while she's dreaming and when the Hammer goes looking for it, she finds a friend and a foe. I enjoyed this charming story with its elements of emotion and humor as well as a thrilling fight scene.

The Goat. She's the greatest animal hero since Dangermouse. And The Hammer is, as we all know, like Jessica Jones with the conversational ability of a Yorkshireman.

Put them together in the healing time pods as the Vagrant and Harm wandered off and you get a story of backstory and friendship and love.

Fun side story to add to reading the vagrant.

Really touching side story that takes place near the middle of The vagrant. It does nothing in terms on adding to plot but in connecting and better understanding the growth of 1 of the major characters.

If you enjoyed the vagrant I would definitely say this 50 page side story is worth the 3 bucks.

This was a delightful little story, that took place during the events of the first book. Since the Hammer was my favorite character it was very nice to see her again and to learn more about her. Of course we can not forget the Goat, because well... What more reason do you need than a goat in a book? 🐐🐐🐐

This was such a cute vignette in this world. I absolutely love The Hammer so it was great to see her solo adventure while the main narrative was elsewhere in the first book. The goat was as personable as ever so watching The Hammer have to trail her was entertaining. I also appreciated learning more of The Hammer's backstory and seeing how that affected her choices.
