During Raquel's first semester of college, she witnesses the end of the world, only to wake up in her old room at her parents' house two years in the past. Even worse, it seems she's the only one who remembers—until Chris Lyley, a boy Raquel always thought was a loser, tells her he remembers the catastrophe.
Before long, they both discover new abilities. They're able to understand any language and teleport through time and space. If Raquel and Chris can figure out what caused the end of their world, maybe they can stop it.
I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review!
FAM Listen .... listen this book. It's cool, it's really cool. If you're a history NERD like me, or like books that involve time travel, superpowers and DINOSAURS you will love this I promise you.
I genuinely want this book to get more attention because it's super fun and so unique and I think y'all could have a great time reading it like I did. It's awesome, like it's actually just insanely awesome and I want you's to love it too.
PLOT
The Sixth Event puts a new spin on the apocalypse genre. This is truly one of the most fun and honestly satisfying books I've ever read (IT JUST GAVE ME SO MUCH COOL STUFF I WILL EXPLAIN)
It starts when Raquel, a college student, experiences the end of the world. Rocks crash to the ground around her and she "dies". Only to awaken in her bedroom two years in the past. She is the only one who can remember the apocalyptic event - however everyone else is actively living the life they did 2 years ago (she actually went back to that time) and so has no recollection of the event (because it hasn't happened yet)
Raquel soon learns she is not the ONLY person who remembers - eight other teenagers, all who have also awoken 2 years in the past after experiencing the end of the world also remember.
Chris and Raquel from America, Susan from Russia, Xiao Ming from China, Andres from Brazil, Monique from South Africa, Theo from Britain, and Zack from Australia. (yas Zack Australia represent)
The eight teenagers have also come to possess incredible and impossible superpowers - the ability to travel to any time and place predating human occupation on the planet, the ability to talk in tongues and the ability to teleport.
Using these powers, they agree they must attempt to prevent the impeding cataclysmic event happening if they can.
If this premise makes you sound sceptical .. know I was there too. Even if it sounded interesting, I never thought it would be insanely awesome. And yet here we are. The reason this book is just SO COOL is because it's basically a romp through pre-history.
Now if you're a bit of a hoe for dinosaurs and ancient history and mammoths and all that good stuff you are just like me. YOU WILL LOVE THIS BOOK
Following the characters as they witnessed extinction events, walked with mammoths, crept up on triceratops, visited the world when there was nothing but aquatic life, it was good fun You could almost forget the entire world was ending and this was serious business
And these events were actually so well researched! THE DINOSAURS EVEN HAD FEATHERS !!! FKGHKFGH !! ( Jurassic world couldn't get that shit right. smh. ) Which kept made me, an indisputable NERD really happy.
◆ ☄ ◆ ☄ ◆ ☄ ◆ ☄ ◆ ☄ ◆ ☄ ◆ ☄
The content of the plot aside, the story was engaging and fast moving. I raced through this, because things were just happening and happening and happening and there was barely a minute of rest. Anytime there wasn't major plot going on, I got to explore the far reaches of the world alongside these characters and that was good enough for me.
Seriously, you will knock this book off SO QUICKLY I flew through the whole thing (I actually read this on my iphone and finished quickly even though I am terrible at reading on my phone so there we go)
CHARACTERS
I LOVED the diversity of the characters ! Having a range of characters from across the world all with different experiences and cultural backgrounds was super cool. While there was no lgbt+ rep and all the characters were able-bodied, having characters from different backgrounds was a massive PLUS for me. (too bad we didn't get to see much of the Australian character because thats my guy)
However, you will notice this is a 4* review and the reason for that is the characters. Now do not get me WRONG, these characters are fine. And I suspect if you prefer plot based to character based stories you won't have a single issue with them. All of them are different and unique and fulfill differing roles, which is good.
Unfortunately, for me there wasn't enough depth, complexity or development to these characters. On one hand I understand - It is a TINY book, only 250 pages and it focusses heavily on plot aspects .,,, but still I love me a good character. Andres and Xiao Ming were only really touched upon, and I would have liked to see more about Zack as a character.
While the more "main characters" do have better development and depth, its still not the BEST, especially for someone like me who relies heavily on character attachment to get into a story.
But I still really liked this, so they weren't BAD. I'm just super curious about them and it's a bit sad to me I don't get to know more about them - especially Zack, Andres, Xiao Ming and Monique who's backstories were barely mentioned.
I DID like that their interactions are really natural though. The dialogue flows well, and the way they talk doesn't seem "too teenage". You know what I mean, you kNOW. The way they interact and talk with each other wasn't forced at all, and seemed realistic which I liked
I THINK this is a super fun book. It's only 250 pages, and it's fast moving so it goes by super fast. This is not philosophical or deep apocalypse - this isn't going to challenge you with complex questions about the role of humans in the galaxy or the validity of our species surviving when others were forced to extinction
But it will take you on a fun little trip. It will keep you highly entertained as you explore prehistory and wonder at what caused the end of the world. This really is sort of soft apocalypse, but if you like science fiction, if you like super powers and if you like history you will LOVE THIS. I'm tellin ya, I'm about ready to inform my mum I'm becoming a paleontologists.
I really don't know why more people haven't read this, but you should! This is one for fans of I Am Number Four, Dark Matter and honestly DINOSAURS. if you like dinosaurs read this.
Disclaimer: I received this book from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I am gonna start off by saying this book was OK. I enjoyed the characters and really loved the concept, but the writing was not really that captivating to me. It was choppy and very slow paced. Also it seems that problems that popped up just seemed to contently just fixed them self's. Although overall it was cute and a easy read I wold recommended this book.
I have much praise for this book. The characters are amazing, their interactions are as natural as they can possibly be. (now, this is a sci-fi book that deals with an upcoming apocalypse, and I am trying to identify if there's anything oxymoronic about that sentence, but I'm semi-asleep while writing this (might have stayed up late to read.. whoops) so I'm gonna leave it as it is). The story itself is original, and the writing style is top-notch, but the realistic characters and their diversity are the strongest feature of the book. I don't see anyone hating this read.
P.S. Thanks to Relient K for keeping me awake this morning, Air for Free is a genius record.
I loved this book. It is unique and original as it tackles the end of the world and terrible outcomes for humanity. I loved the diverse characters and the world-building is exquisite. The style was great, lively and dynamic, endearing and compelling.
I received this book from the publishers via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
When Raquel wakes up one day in college, things feel a bit weird - and get weirder when birds fall from the air, the sky turns a funny colour and it begins raining giant rocks that promptly kill Raquel. When she wakes up, it's two years in the past and she's 16 again. She soon discovers that there are others who experienced the end of the world and sent back in time, and they have to work out what happened and how to save the world.
This was....okay? I thought the time travel the teens discovered they could do and how they looked back at other civilisation ending catastrophes to figure what happened to them was quite interesting, and not something I've read about before. But overall, everything seemed a bit too easy for them and how they figured everything out (the end was a bit anti-climatic too). There wasn't really an explanation as to how they ended up time travelling, and how their powers worked other than 'Memory' as well as why Chris and Raquel were the only ones together and who knew each other from before. I did keep laughing as well in how Raquel kept stressing how much mature and adult she was from her 16 year old friends because she was mentally 18 and had experienced one whole semester in college, and while yes I see her point, there isn't actually that much difference from 16 and 18. It would have made a bit more sense if she was mentally 21 and had to time travel back to her 16 year old self.
This is an interesting take on the end of the world. Imagine dying in the end of the world then waking two years in the past with some interesting abilities. No one else remembers except a few teenagers scattered across the earth. Teleporting, timetravel and understanding all languages are a few of the skills they wake with. This is a well written book that will hold the interest of young adults and older. Some younger readers may enjoy this as well but some parts of the story may be too upsetting for younger readers. I saw no editing errors and was happily surprised by the end twist. I chose to review this copy that I received from netgalley.
I have to say that this knocks the apocalypse genre on its head – very cool concept that is brilliantly executed.
Raquel is your run of the mill 18 year old when all of a sudden the sky turns green and all hell breaks loose. For reasons that are unclear in the beginning, Raquel wakes up 2 years earlier as a 16 year old, sent back in time to figure out and stop things from turning to shit. She meets a guy named Chris and stumbles upon 6 other kids who are in the same boat as her.
So starts a crazy adventure.
* Raquel was a little hard to like in the beginning as she felt a little stuck up but as the story went on, she begun to loosen up and become more likeable.
* Chris was pretty likeable from the get go and I was pretty drawn in by the other characters too. Each served a great purpose and even though they weren’t all likeable, they certainly made the book and the plot all the more interesting.
* Love that this isn’t just set in one location but takes place around the world; new type of global domination.
* The ending is all kinds of WTF and YES so brace yourself for that.
* Downside? I personally felt like there were some things left unsaid however in terms of the overall arc, the story still worked.
If you are looking for something a little more original and love a good catastrophe, then this is the YA book for you.
Oh My God, what a ride! I have absolutely no idea why this book isn't on everybody's radar, but it should definitely be.
First of all this isn't you typical apocalyptic YA novel where a couple of americans set out to save the world. This book actually makes the Apocalypse a global thing, as it should be. There's one kid for every major country (Russia, South Africa, Australia, Brazil, China, United Kingdom and the United States) and together they try to figure out if they can save the world. You'll realise that there's two kids from one country but you'll figure out why at somepoint in the book.
The plot was very intriguing and it took all my strength to put the book down. I read it in pretty much a day! It was that interesting.
The characters are really likeable, and I particularly enjoyed how they dealt with eachother and how relationships arose for some of them. The writing was simple and easy to understand, but there were some spelling mistakes in the copy I got. Also I believe there were some inconsistencies with some parts of the story but that may only be due to the fact that I read the book so fast that I may have missed a couple of things.
The author really invested some time researching into the major extinction events Earth has experienced in order to develop the storyline and I really appreciated that. So if you enjoy reading about dinosaurs and what Earth may have looked like before humans came along, you will really like this book. Also the concept of memory was neatly explored and it fascinated me to no end.
There's only one minor complaint I have... It messed with my anxiety really bad ahah I am terrified of something happening in a global scale that we cannot avoid, but at the same time I love reading about it, so my heart was beating a little too fast for most parts of this book.
All in all I loved "The Sixth Event" and I really hope it gets the notoriety that it deserves. I recommend it to everyone who enjoys apocalyptic books or dinosaurs really.
This is one of those books that I would love to display on my shelves.
This book was given to me via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Review can also be found in my blog.
I am really sad to say this but this book didn't do it for me.
I really wanted to like it. I tried hard. I read the reviews on Goodreads and Amazon and a lot of people did.
The concept was really nice. Two teenagers who witnessed the end of the world suddenly woke up two years before it happened. When I read the blurb, I was really excited on how this would play out. I imagined thrilling, fast-paced scenes, awesome friendships and a great romance. Sadly, this book fell short of that.
PLOT
I like to compare the plot to a house that had a nice framework but unfortunately, lacked interior designing. This book had great foundation. Having the chance to save the world is an awesome idea. Sadly, the events leading up to that had no impact to me. To me, it was as if the characters were like, "Okay, let's save the world and be done with it."
The worldbuilding was not properly executed. Sometimes, I had a hard time imagining things, most especially at the end. It was supposed to be the most important part but I didn't feel anything because it was not properly described.
Lastly, the end was a bit rushed. The story dragged on for so long that it had very little space left for the ending. I was really worried when I was at more than 90% of the book and the climax still wasn't happening.
CHARACTERS
The characters were forgettable and didn't have that much "character" into them. I'm the type of reader who wants diversity. I want to be able to differentiate them from the rest of the books I've read. I want them to break away from stereotypes. Sadly, Raquel was just your usual, average girl and Chris is kinda annoying sometimes. The other characters were also not properly developed. A few days from now, I won't be able to tell who's who.
ROMANCE
I honestly think this was not a requirement for this book. At first, I didn't feel the chemistry between the two main characters and the way they got together was so out of the blue that I was utterly shocked. However, I won't deny that there were moments that it was almost great. But it still wasn't enough.
This book is not entirely bad. It just wasn't for me and it didn't have the things I always look for. However, some people liked it so you might, too.
*This book was sent to me through NetGalley in exchange for a honest review*
I really wanted to love this book. But it just never got there for me.
The beginning of the story was very intriguing and the concept was something that I definitely have never read before. But about 45% of the way through, it lost my attention and enthusiasm. I felt that I never really connected with majority of the characters. The boy was annoying and we never really got any back story to any of the 'others'. I would have loved to see just a few paragraphs about where they come from, what they experienced in the event, etc.
And then that ending... oh man was that hard to even figure out what was going on. It ended very abruptly, which does make sense for what they were trying to do throughout the whole book, but I just felt like I wanted more. I don't know if it was the writing or just the story, but I could not picture what they were trying to do. Mostly, I think, because it was only mentioned in passing and never really explained of how they could do it, they just 'could'.
Overall, I didn't dislike it. I did finish it and I was never not going to either, I really needed to see what was going to happen to everyone in the end. I would read another book by this author though, maybe the story just needs a bit more finagling.
I can't understand why no one else has reviewed this book. If you like apocalyptic fiction that is unique and well written..this is for you. The characters are not the typical good looking, super smart, super tough or heroic characters...the author allows them to be human - of average looks, intelligence and ambition, with strengths and weaknesses that don't harm their individual voices one bit. There is no ego or narcissism - just the need to work together to save the world literally. I thought the plot just eerie enough and dark enough and melancholy enough for an apocalyptic world without overshadowing the story that kept me engaged. I don't want to give away what happens - but I recommend reading it!
I think this is my favorite book of the First Reads I have received! I devoured it in 3 days and thought about it when I wasn't reading. The characters were great, the premise was awesome, and I think it all wrapped up wonderfully. There was a very brief section that I felt got a little 'mushy-gushy' with the teen romance, but that's to be expected with YA. I really enjoyed this book and the details included. I felt it was well researched and it seemed very plausible. I see this one getting popular!
This was probably the most unique take on an apocalyptic novel that I've ever read. I enjoyed it immensely. The characters were good and the story engaging. While I did not care for the way the book ended, it at least had an ending...which is more than I can say for most books these days! Recommended to fans of TimeRiders or The Lorien Legacies (I Am Number Four).
I won a copy of this book in Goodreads giveaway, but all opinions expressed are 100% my own.
* I received this title from NetGalley in exchange for honest feedback* The Sixth Event is a deadly yet exciting journey to discover all they ways the world has ended and how to save it!
This story was almost a hybrid of YA contemporary and disaster world building. We get to navigate through the emotions of these teens as well as the perils of trying to save the world. In the beginning the writing felt flat to me. However it didn’t last long - once the action started, the tone of the writing changed. It was more energized and adventurous. I found Raquel to be an interesting main character. I think she had lots of growth throughout the story. When she first wakes up she is definitely shaken by what occurred, but changes tracks to thinking about saving friendships she lost. Honestly, that would be the last thing on my mind. Once she meets Chris, the pace really starts to pick up. It didn’t take long before I became invested in these characters and their journey.
I love great relationships. Chris and Raquel had a very genuine and sweet relationship despite the end of the world looming over their heads. It wasn’t insta-love, it built up and really came to blossom at the end. I really loved Chris too. I think I liked him more than Raquel. He cared for her so much even when she didn’t quite understand his feelings herself. With the ability to teleport, Chris and Raquel meet other teens who have seen the end of the world as well. Some of the supporting characters also get a little romance of their own, but nothing to the scale that Chris and Raquel have. They also use this ability to go back in time to the age of dinosaurs, which is pretty cool! I thought The Sixth Event was a unique story. I love other-world stories and this one surprised me.
I am unsure if this a stand alone or a series, but the ending...oh my the ending. I was glued to my Kindle. It was intense, had all the feels, and somethings I didn’t see coming. I really commend Kristen on the ending because it took me from “ I like this book” to loving this book. If you enjoy after-earth stories, pick this one up! I gave it a solid four stars!
I enjoyed this book a lot more than I expected to. I'm actually surprised more people haven't read it. It's thoroughly engaging and fast-paced; I could see this becoming a pretty good movie if it ever came to be. The plot is post-apocalyptic and intelligently "science-fictiony" (think Blake Crouch's Dark Matter for teens), and although I generally avoid YA romance, I tolerated it in this novel because it is, after all, written for teens.
I knocked off a star because of some spelling/grammar errors that were pretty glaring -- specifically the misuse of too/to that was so obvious I wondered if I was reading an uncorrected proof. I did receive the book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review, but seeing it was published in May of 2016 I'm unsure why those errors weren't corrected. Super frustrating as it threw me right out of the world the novel had built with my silent rage: "Why doesn't a published author know that the prepositional to is 'to' and not 'too'?!"
*This book was received via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review*
This was a great read. The characters were interesting, especially the two main characters Chris and Raquel. The fact that there were sci-fi elements such as time travel was really interesting. The adventures they went on in their quest to save the world and the imagery and detail of the times and places they travelled back to were amazing. I also really enjoyed watching the growth and development of the characters, especially that of Chris and Raquel and their blossoming relationship, however I was a bit disappointed with the ending. Overall, this was a really enjoyable read which had great imagery, characters and and engaging and unique plot.
The main idea of the book was great, but the characters didn’t feel fully developed and the dialogue was kinda cheesy. I got to the point where I dreaded reading this book, so I gave up on it. Maybe the ending gets better, but in my opinion the story was dry.
This book has me conflicted. On one hand the story was so unique, the concept was interesting, the characters were all diverse and likeable and the world-building descriptions were fantastic. One the other hand it just didn’t captivate and charm me as much as I was expecting it to. It’s slow paced in parts and really choppy in others, it wasn’t hard to follow, I’m just not a fan of that style of story telling. That’s completely personal preference though and nothing against the author or book itself. There seemed to be an easy fix for any problems the characters faced as well which was a bit of a let down, I wanted it to be a little more intense at times. The romance aspects felt unnecessary, it added nothing to the story and felt completely out of the blue. The ending was a cop out, anticlimactic to say the least. If there’s a sequel to be written then it makes sense, if this is to remain a standalone then there’s certain things that are left unanswered, which can work for some books but with this I would’ve preferred everything tied up with a neat little bow. Again, probably personal preference. Overall it had the potential to be a great book but it was just an okay book. A lot of people have been giving it good reviews though, I seem to be in the minority that wasn’t blown away by it, so you should read it for yourself and see what you make of it.
Imagine being 18, a freshman in college and one day the world ends. You see the world end in front of your eyes before being killed yourself. And then when you feel the world slip away you open your eyes and you're back in your childhood room. You are 16 again, and are back in high school. Everything is exactly as it was 2 years ago. Yeah. That's the kind of crazy this book is.
Even though the premise is a little crazy and the rest of the story is too, it's fun and weird and you constantly find yourself wondering what will happen next. AND WHY??? Because this is so crazy and you just need to know how and why this is happening. The story was a little unbelievable, with all these weird abilities Raquel has, and with some other things I can't tell you about because that would be a spoiler. But I found that it was a weird mix of unrealistic and realistic (because there was some science background to it, but at other points there was none). I like it when they explain how something is possible, even though it is very impossible, which they did not really do for the most part. There were a lot of characters and I couldn't really tell them all apart, and therefore they were not as memorable as they could have been. I would have loved to see less characters (because seriously what is the use of all of these characters?) and get to know them more. The two main characters Raquel and Chris were great characters, but I would have love to see more of them. I did think it was very interesting to see how your life can change in 2 years and when looking back, how different you would have acted if you were the same person as you were today. The ending was a little rushed and I didn't quite understand what was going on, but for the main part it was really enjoyable to read. It sounds like I'm really just mentioning bad things but it really isn't a bad book. The love story was cute and I found it to be quite realistic, compared to some other YA books. It's a book that will confuse you and make you yearn for more. I am giving this book 3.5 stars because even though it was enjoyable, it was a little too weird. I would recommend this book if this review made you curious, because I think that was what made the book good: the constant wanting to know what's going to happen and how and why. General rating: ★★★ Diversity rating: ★★☆ (contains: POC, minority, partially takes place in non-western world)

Even worse, it seems she's the only one who remembers—until Chris Lyley, a boy Raquel always thought was a loser, tells her he remembers the catastrophe. My review of "The Sixth Event"
A frightening scenario in which you and one other are the only ones who remember society as we know it coming to and end and not knowing how to keep history from repeating itself. How do you stop the end of the world? Can you stop it from happening again or are you destined to live it over and over again?
With strong lead characters and support characters the lend credence to the story. What would you do if you woke up two years in the past. Think it was all a dream or tell someone and risk eing thought insane. A book you do not want to miss.
My rating for "The Sixth Event" is 4/25 out of 5 stars. For all ages who enjoy a good SciFi thriller.
So this book was insanely awesome. Raquel is just a normal 18-year-old at college when suddenly the sky goes green, birds start dropping dead all over lights are flickering, and then a huge rock hurtles down and...
She wakes up 2 years ago, a 16-year-old high school student at home again. But she's the only one who's aware that time has rewound, except for this random guy Chris whom she'd never paid much attention to before. So they have to figure out what's up and it turns out that basically the world ended, but they and six others have instead been sent back in time to essentially figure out what happened, and prevent it from happening.
It was never really explained WHY those eight, and why there were two from the same continent who actually knew each other. (The others were from the UK, South Africa, Russia, Brazil, China and Australia and jesus the Australian guy sure got the worst of the whole 'life on earth ending' part!) But no matter it was a cool story, lots of time traveling and teleporting :) I LOVED their ability too to be able to understand any language, so all the kids could easily communicate.
I did NOT love the fact that the word "too" kept appearing when it should have only been "to"...
Raquel, along with seven other teenagers, survives the apocalypse and now they have to save the world. But how will they survive this challenge? In the beginning I found Raquel a very shallow, selfish person and it was hard to like her. Chris on the other hand, touched my heart directly. He's an outcast and nobody really cares about the rumors spread about him. But as time goes, Raquel begins to understand that she can be a good person and Chris is right there to make her see the beauty of life. The other six involved in this race against time all had their own story and fears to battle with. I would have liked a little more background about them, but it wasn't something missing to understand the story line. When I found out the price for all of them to pay for saving mankind, I wanted to cry or scream. That didn't sound fair at all. So, I dreaded reading the last chapters. But it played out well, for almost all of them. If you like books about surviving catastrophes, the apocalypse or coming of age, this is a great book to read.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my review.
This book was short and fun with a unique and compelling premise. The delivery wasn't quite as effective as it could have been and I felt the main characters lacking in believability.
This YA story explores further a seeming apocalypse that led to a group of teens being able to disrupt the time-space continuum, with a limited window of opportunity to change the eventual outcome of the world’s collapse.
The casting is very smart. They are introduced progressively, timed to coincide with the unravelling how global and catastrophic the events were that led to the “end of the world”. The characters were very diverse, and each had their own likeability factor. The time jumps focused on key evolutionary eras, and each timeline was carefully thought of by the author.
Obviously, being a “coming of age” book, the author was also able to capitalize on the drama and heightened emotions that the age of adolescence brings about.
Overall, a neatly tied story that did not come across as too clichéd or recycled. I enjoyed reading it.
I received a review copy of this book from NetGalley.
Definitely the most unique apocalyptic story I've read to date. Time travel, teleportation and possibly the end of the world - I loved it. Good character development, excellent pacing and a kick-ass plot made it entirely too difficult to put down. Highly entertaining story.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I was very interested in the premise of this book, but in the end it just wasn't for me. I wasn't compelled by the characters or the narration, which read very young to me despite the characters being older teens. I would still recommend this book for younger readers interested in science fiction and apocalyptic stories.
This story keeps a nice pace, and has engaging characters. I wasn’t sure that I liked the ending, but it did wrap up its story nicely and that is probably just a matter of personal preference.
Read the full review in the December issue of Uncaged Book Reviews.
Different from other End of the World young adult books. I really enjoyed this take of an end of the world book. I was stuck through on if I wanted to give it 3 1/2 stars or 4 stars through. I went with four since it was different than other books like this and because I really loved the two main characters in the story, Raquel and Chris. I really felt bad for Chris and some guilt he felt, I am not going to say what he feels guilty about.
Some other characters were Susan, Andres, Theo, Xiao Ming, Monique, and Zach who plays a very important part of the story. It was interesting on what happened to cause the world to be destroyed, and how these characters tried to stop this from happening.
The ending was good, not fantastic but not awful which is a good thing. I am so glad I was approved by the author to review this book by the way of Netgalley.
I would recommend this book to individuals who want a different take of a young adult book that deals with the end of the world. Don't go in exception a mind blowing plot through. It was a good book thought.
