The kids train to be monster hunters while the old "friend" who returned in volume 1 puts his plan in motion. I want to like this more than I actually do. It's a great premise but the writing is very haphazard. So far there's lots of illusions to things that never pay off, they just end. I do like the dark humor and macabre setting of the book though.

The Allan kids, Geoff and Vivian, are learning the family trade: monster hunting. Elsewhere, one of Frederick Allan’s enemies has returned for revenge and the kids discover a dark secret about their pa…

What the hell happened to this series?! The first volume was so good - the second one’s garbage! And why’s it taken nearly a year to come out? Oy…

Almost nothing of consequence happens here. I thought the series was about this family of monster hunters but we have to go through this charade of whether or not the kids are going to be hunters themselves only for the parents to grudgingly agree. It’s been a year since I read it but I thought that’s where the first book ended? So pointless and time-wasting to just settle on the premise.

There’s a big secret revealed about Geoff and Vivian’s parents that rocks their world until it doesn’t and they forget about it by the end. And the enemy from the past who returns to fight Frederick felt forced and uninteresting.

The October Faction is an extremely dark comic visually with Damien Worm using a ton of black ink throughout but I kinda liked the stylized look. It gets a bit much at times but it’s unusual and different to anything else out there at the moment.

The first book was really entertaining and showed the series had a lot of potential but the second volume doesn’t realise it, boring the reader with trifling nothings instead. The October Faction, Volume 2 is a disappointing follow-up to one of last year’s most compelling new debuts.

Another good story in this series. Steve Niles did so much better in this than he did in the 30 Days of Night series although the tone of this is a lot lighter than that one.

The Allen family has added Dante (Robot Face) into the gang. The kids Geoff and Vivian are beginning their training of monster hunting but their parents are trying to convince them not to do it since it’s so dangerous. Meanwhile the father is attacked and comes back wanting to kill his family and he has no pulse. The kids must find a way to save themselves without killing their father.

I am loving this series so much that I almost hate to read the last volume I have. I know it will take forever for my library to get Volume 4. This installment continues the Allen family saga. The children are still trying to convince their parents to start ghost hunting again and Lucas, the werewolf family friend, seems to be hanging around waiting for a decision. Dante, the monster who was adopted in the first volume, remains my favorite. He is like a 10 year old in an adult body and he is enjoying having a family for probably the first time in his life. The only reason this got 4/5 instead of 5/5 like the first is because something happens to Mr. Allen in this volume which I think isn't explained very well and which is wrapped up too quickly. As always though, the artwork remains as some of my favorite amongst all of the graphic novels I read. If you love horror, you have to give this series a try.

I really enjoyed this volume, the art, the colours and the humour Niles injects into the characters is incredible. This is one of those books I read with zero expectations, the first book was okay but I think the shaky beginning was more setup. I hope this series can continue down this track and build the family dynamic along the way. This book is more about the bond and it leaves the characters in an interesting place for the next book.

This volume ends some of the threads started in the first volume, especially around Cope and the zombie issue, and starts the training of the 'children' in earnest, which gives them a chance to show off their skills. It's a quick read and the art is more impactful than the writing, although I did warm to the characters a bit more here. Still, this is a pretty run-of-the-mill monster hunting series with a few nice nods to more modern sensibilities.

This volume features the progression of the children as they move into the monster hunting profession. I still think this series feels like we were dropped in the middle but I suppose that still works as a storytelling device. The art is great and fits the story well. I guess this series is still ongoing, so I'm curious to see where things go.

5 Stars, Buy it

This volume is a partial reread. But mostly I’ve forgotten everything so it’s pretty much like new. In any case, this volume is just as good as the first, if not better. The art is great, the story even better. I can’t wait to see where it goes in Volume 3.

A solid follow up to the first volume. It does everything the first does right and keeps on going on. Some light story development and character development.

Volume two is a "set things up for things to come" kind of read. I enjoyed it. It was still fun but I nothing of importance happens. We get a big reveal but there is no resolution to it. I am guessing the ladder coupled with the anticlimactic plot is leading up to an intense and thrilling volume three.

The artwork continues to be the aspect of this series I absolutely love. It mixes cover art styles with a pen and ink style. The use of refs and blacks speaks to this artistic heart. The right amount of dark and gothic art adds a delightful layer to this story.

Things continue to move a little fast at times and the writing could be stronger (the son is just... magical now? Like has green magic coming out of his hands magical?) -- but Worm's illustrations and the general vibe of this book have me sold. Not gonna blow anybody's minds, but a fun way to get in the autumnal spirit for sure.

This begins the training of the kids, which amounts to being attacked by monsters and their own mother, who also turns into a menacing monster. The father's arch-nemesis also makes an appearance.

The writing isn't great. The art still stands up, but it's so stylized I could see a lot of people not liking it.

(3,8 of 5 for decent monster hunter horror-ish story)
The second book is quite nice. The story is not very complicated, it focuses on few things almost one after another and I enjoyed it. The art is just the same, nicely fitting the theme.

6 issues to decide whether the Allan kids should become monsters hunters? Way too much and it really seems this volume is full of air more than anything. Disappointing.

Beautiful art and fascinating story! Unique!

I am really enjoying The October Faction so far. As the world expands I find myself more and more drawn in. There are so many secrets and different stories at play. This book took off in an unexpected direction and I can't wait to see what happens next.

At the heart of the story is the Allan family. They are both a "regular" family with a large helping of found family thrown in. In the first book I felt like we had a lot of set up and that the characters had as yet untapped potential. Well, in this book we begin to see the characters develop a bit more and get a sense for the kind of people they are or might become. They are like any family in that they have secrets— however some of their secrets could get them killed... or worse, turned into a zombie or other supernatural creature!

I have to say that my favorite element of this GN is the art. It is absolutely the perfect art style for the story it is telling. It is creepy and unique and just projects a vibe that permeates the whole story. Even without any words at all, the dark, paranormal nature of the story is evident in a(…. It started off a bit slow on book one with some necessary world building, but this book we start to get a taste of the action. There is still a lot to learn about this family and the intriguing supernatural world they inhabit. I am in for the ride. My only regret is that currently I can't afford to buy physical copies. Luckily the digital ones are currently under KU, but nothing beats seeing such vibrant art in person!

Preface: Whenever a great writer and/or artist/illustrator sets out to make a series, I always cringe on instinct. Keeping readers who tend to always expect lightning in a bottle on every single page of every issue or volume is nearly impossible. Every piece of work has its flaws, be it a movie, song, etc., and this series is no different. The illustrations as just as great, in my opinion, but the story lags a bit. As Geoff and Viv work to come into their own (come of age) as legitimate monster hunters, we see more of the typical parent-child push-pull that comes with that sort of transition from teenager to young adult status. This is fine, if that's what you're hoping to find here. I personally love family discord in my fiction (whether or not that's meant to be the central conflict of a story). But, from what I've seen, this kind of story trope tends to have a polarizing affect--some readers absolutely love the coming of age trope in their horror fiction and others absolutely hate it.
Where the story lags for me, though, is how it seems to over-emphasize this and doesn't offer as much action as it could've (if you disagree, please don't hate). Put another way, it seems like the horror is given a backseat to the family drama. I need as close to a 50/50 balance between the two as possible in works like this.
So I averaged my review out at three. I love the characters, the illustrations, and am glad that I kept reading the series after this volume.
Happy reading!

Settling Into The New Normal

Going through the next stage of your life is always tough. In fact, there are some things you're going to have to give up too. It really feels like we're growing comfortable with this lovable dysfunctional family. Compared to the Zombie family, they keep secrets, and they try to bottle up. That's a good thing to overcome since anymore pretending could kill them. Plus, who wants to be molested by a skin stealing voodoo witch?

This volume is epic. The action starts quickly and doesn't let up until the very last page.

The family finally comes together and starts hunting monsters. The weird thing is that the mom and sad are regular humans while their kids both seem to have magical powers or abilities. I'd be interested to see if Mr. Niles explores this.
