A Celeste Eagan Mystery #1

Person of Interest

Rate this book

Just last week, I was a regular single mom and drama teacher at Peytonville Prep with a semi-normal life. The only real drama I had to deal with involved my football-coach ex and his hussy girlfriend. And maybe deciding if I should take that full-time principal/actress job at the local playhouse.

Everything changed when I discovered my boss hanging in his office. The suicide turned out to be a murder and my ex went suspiciously MIA. I tried to find some answers, but all that got me was labeled a person of interest by the attractively uptight Detective Shaw Muldoon. Not exactly the way I was hoping to interest him, if you know what I mean.

Now my life is plenty exciting, if you count a stint in jail, several attempted break-ins, more dead bodies and the odd exploding car. Did I mention I also have my own personal stalker? It's becoming pretty clear that if I don't unmask the killer soon, my life won’t ever be boring again...it will be over.

About the author

Emery Harper

Born in Alaska, relocated, reared and still residing in North Texas, Emery started writing at a very young age—pretty much before she knew what writing was. She’s always had stories running around in her brain—doesn’t everyone?!? She penned several short stories, poems and one attempt at a novel when she was still a teen, but it wasn’t until she was pregnant with #4 boy-child that she seriously developed her manuscript chops.

A little murder, mayhem and maybe a twist and turn keep her plenty occupied in her make-believe worlds, though she is often grounded quickly from any one of the grown-children who live in her casa along with her high school sweetheart who’s been her personal hero for over thirty years.

This book really checks a LOT of my favorite (mystery) boxes. Lovely lady sleuth (check), great story (check), funny (check), hot yummy detective (double check). A new favorite for sure. This is the first Emery Harper book I read.

Celeste lives with her daughter Paige after her divorce from Colin. They both work at a prestigious school, she a theater teacher and he a coach, although the fact Colin's girlfriend Naomi works there as well is not too great. When the principal Chad is found dead - by Celeste - life changes really fast. The very handsome detective Muldoon has his eye on Celeste as an Person of Interest and Celeste keeps getting in his way when she decides to do some sleuthing of her own. An exploding car, someone searching her house and taking shots at her complicate her life, and the tingles she feels whenever Muldoon is near confuse her.

I like Celeste as the heroine and Shaw Muldoon is the perfect stern but attentive hero. There is some great banter between them and attraction... There is also her best friend, Eli, and intelligent daughter Paige. And Muldoon has a big family we as yet know nothing about.
The perfect start of - I hope - at least some more books.

For those lovers of romantic mystery I highly recommend this one.
The publication date is August 29, 2016.

A découvrir !

This first in a new series is terrific. Celeste Eagan is a theater teacher at a prep school and works with her ex-husband and his new girlfriend. It seems Celeste can't escape from the drama and when her ex asks her to approach the principal on his girlfriend's behalf, Celeste sees no easy way to deny the favor.
Unfortunately for Celeste things go from bad to worse when she finds the principal dead in his office.
Celeste can't believe Chad is dead and even worse that the hunky detective thinks she is a person of interest.
This book offered plenty of plot twists and the characters were all likeable. The author wove a wonderful story filled with mystery, romance and intrigue.
I will be looking for more in this series.

Mon avis en Français

My English review

This book is approximately 84,000 words

My Thoughts

Nancy Drew, Miss Marple and Jessica Fletcher have nothing on the penchant for trouble or the powers of deductive reasoning combined with excellent investigative skills Celeste Eagan embodies in this sometimes humorous sometimes serious but always page turning murder mystery.

From dealing with being a single mother, worrying about embarking on a different career path to becoming the target of someone trying their darnedest kill her Celeste has her hands full all through the book.

Trying to ignore her explosive chemistry with the hunky Detective Muldoon is just one more trial in her current circumstances that she has no real idea how to deal with.

What this lacks in some areas it more than makes up for in others, especially when one considers Celeste has an overwhelmingly developed penchant for good intentions leading to less than positive outcomes when things around her seem to crater.

What reeled me in with this one was the thought that Celeste as the leading character sounded just quirky enough to be an interesting one to get to know and to my delight she was just that and more.

I'm pretty sure that if someone were trying to kill me, I'd be a lot more gracious to my protector than Celeste was toward Shaw!

When teacher Celeste Eagan finds the school principal hanging in his office, it starts a ball rolling that she never expected. Now, dealing with the overzealous (and totally sexy) Detective Shaw Muldoon, trying to keep herself out of jail (again), sneaking around looking for suspects and ensuring her girls look perky whenever the good detective is around, Celeste has her hands full. It seems she's made an enemy however, and staying alive has just become priority number one for the single mom, as she dodges one attempt on her life after another. Will Celeste and Shaw figure out who's behind the mayhem before it's too late?

I'm always a sucker for whodunit's that are well written and provide an interesting plot with equally interesting characters, especially when one has less than zero experience with law enforcement. Celeste fits that bill nicely. As a theater teacher, she's more used to Shakespeare than sleuthing, but she's a smart cookie who doesn't have a problem jumping in to try and figure out who wants her dead.

This book was well written and had a few decent red herrings built in to keep me guessing until the end. The thing that prevented this from a higher rating was that it was a little unexciting and even more unoriginal. This book followed the formula to the letter, and I really just wanted something to stand out and make it unique. Also, I was disappointed that there was little to no heat in PERSON OF INTEREST, as there was some good potential there between Celeste and Shaw. Ms. Harper did set the story up for future books in the Celeste Eagan Mystery series, so hopefully there'll be a nice romance arc forthcoming.

Bottom Line: Decent kickoff to a new mystery series. Hopefully future offerings are a little more exciting with some kissy face thrown in for good measure. - See more at: http://www.theromancereviews.com/view...

I have to admit I liked this one. It might have had a tiny bit to do with the hunky, conflicted detective who falls into Celeste's orbit. Maybe. Or it might have been the way Celeste stumbles her way into trouble without really trying. I don't know. Either way, I ended up liking this book quite a bit and want to see Shaw and Celeste snuggle up once the smoke clears.

Not literal smoke, just so you know. Well, except for that one time. But, really, who could have predicted THAT happening?

Anyway. Let's talk about Celeste and her insane sense of fair play. She kinda has her dislike on for her ex's new lady friend (with reason, since new lady friend is a little hard to take) yet she STILL goes to bat for her when asked. Because Celeste is a good person. A good person who ends up smack-dab in the middle of something not so nice when she stumbles over her boss's body. Not literally.

Enter hunky detective. He blows hot and cold (say it with me now...with good reason since he's investigating Celeste's part in the whole murder debacle) and confuses the heck out of Celeste, but I'm hoping for great things down the road for the two of them. GREAT THINGS. You know, once she isn't a suspect or in danger of dying herself.

Bottom line: I liked it. I liked Celeste (even though she was WAY too nice for her own good sometimes). I liked Shaw. With everything that happened in this book, I'm wondering what shenanigans Celeste can get into next.

I read through this book very quickly. I became engrossed in the story of Celeste, a single mom working as a theatre teacher at a private school. She arrives early one morning to discover a dead body, and becomes very tangled up in the ensuing police investigation. She ends up drawing all the wrong (and right) attention for it.
I really enjoyed reading Person of Interest. Celeste’s narration reads just like the way you’d expect her to talk. It was relatable, and flowed easily. At times she interrupts her own train of thought or makes self-aware comments on the side. This book had a good mix of drama, sleuthing, comedy and romance. Overall a fun read and I’ll look forward to following the series.

I received an advance electronic copy of Person of Interest through netgalley.com for giving honest feedback.

Fun, quirky mystery with an unintentional PoI (Person of Interest) in Celeste, a drama teacher/single mom/all around good egg with a fun sense of adventure and a smoking/ sultry by-the-books cop who is trying to figure out who killed Celeste's Principal. Bonus: awesome best friend in Levi and acknowledgement that when you fall down a flight of stairs, you actually get hurt :-). Engaging, well paced and a fun read all round.

Person of Interest is the first in the Celeste Eagan series by Harper Emery. A thoroughly enjoyable mystery with a cast of characters that you'll love. Celeste becomes the person of interest in her boss's murder. Of course, she'll need to clear her name with the he help of her best friend Levi. Add one sexy detective and you'll be quickly turning the pages. I'm looking forward to more mysteries with Celeste and the gang.

The author writes well. Offbeat sarcasm. The reasons I only gave this a three is that #1 it's supposed to be a mystery, not some too hot to trot comedy. Only my opinion. #2 When the main character is supposedly a person of interest, and the ex is taken in for questioning you do not realistically have the cop, the person of interest, the ex, and his new significant other all sitting around the table together like a tea party listening to one another's versions, the two validating each other. Ok, maybe it's not suppose to be a real mystery. If so, the author accomplished this. #3 When she is in her own home, relaxing, taking a bath a cop decides to invade her privacy (though the front door's locked) because she doesn't turn on a light, or answer the door. Even if somehow this made logical sense because he did not want her flee, once he realized she was in the tub rather than leaving he then proceeds to enter the bathroom, sit on the toilet and stare at her. In real life she should have filed charges right there rather than wondering if he wants her like he turns her on. Thing is, the author really does have a good style of writing if it was another genre. The book may have been more entertaining though not really very believable.

To be honest, I guessed the culprit and (almost) the motive at two thirs of the book.
But that's not what's important here.
I'll admit it's not great litterature by far. But it's better : it's a cute, fun, nice book that will help you disconnect and have a good time. Plus the heroin is endearing, her smart kid adorable and her interactions avec Detective Sexy both fun and teasing.
What else ?

Liked this book, but it could have been better. It was funny and moved fairly quickly after the first few chapters. I would have given it another star of there had been less bad language a great completely unrealistic scenes. The scene where the cop broke into her bathroom would not have happened and it made Shaw an otherwise really cool character come across as a creepy perve.

Review can be seen at AAR: http://allaboutromance.com/book-revie...
Romantic Suspense is one of my favorite sub-genres in romance and is one that can be very difficult to do well. Emery Harper has entered that select group of credible suspense writers with her début novel, Person of Interest. A murder mystery served up with a dose of humor and a realistic hero who doesn’t pace through the book rattling the alpha cage is a refreshing addition to the suspense/mystery category.

Celeste Eagan is a drama teacher at an exclusive preparatory high school. When she and her husband Colin were first starting out, he was hired as a coach and teacher and thought it would be great for them to work together. As a new wife in love with her husband, Celeste agreed and she got the drama teacher job. She used to love her position, but always felt it was just a temporary stop on her way to a career in “real theater.” Now, over a decade later with a husband who left her for another, younger teacher, Celeste is rethinking her decision to settle for a job rather than go for what she really wants. When a steady position comes available in the local theater company, she decides it is time to move on and move up. Unfortunately however, her old job is not yet through with her. When Celeste discovers the principal hanging from the rafters of his office, she becomes embroiled in a murder investigation that puts herself and ex-hubby Colin firmly on the suspect list.

Celeste is a great character for the most part. She really, really does not like Colin’s new girlfriend Naomi, but Celeste is, at the core, a nice person and she takes great care to keep their child out of the middle of any arguments between her divorced parents. She is a good mother to Paige (who is a hoot, by the way) and a good best friend to Levi. Where her character falters just a bit is in the treatment of Naomi as the “hussy” and Colin as the clueless jock who was taken in by her home-wrecking charms. This misogynistic trope has about played itself out as far as I am concerned. It takes two to cheat, and the one who made the vows is the one who should shoulder the bulk of the blame. Even the adjective “hussy” makes me shudder just a bit. There are also a few editing problems (for instance, a smashed cell phone that later turns up intact) that I hope get cleaned up in the final edition. But on the whole, the character of Celeste is likeable and the reader will be able to relate to her and empathize with her.

I really liked Paige. A child of divorce and of academic parents, she is very mature for her age. Throw in the fact that she is naturally gifted and she is almost like another egalitarian and adult character. Children are extremely difficult to get right in literature, and a good portion of the books I have read with child characters have them portrayed as stereotypes or made of cardboard and inserted into the story for no discernible reason. Paige’s character propels the story as any good secondary character should and as a mother, I found her entirely believable.

When Chad (the school principal and murder victim) is found dead in his office, police detective Shaw Muldoon draws the case. But that is not all he draws. He is drawn to Celeste from the very beginning and has to squelch that attraction as the investigation progresses, at least until he can rule her out as a suspect. The relationship that grows between Shaw and Celeste is also believable and organic. While both feel an attraction, there is no “insta-love” in this book and in any case, Celeste has too much on her plate to think about a new relationship. For those who are looking for romance, this might disappoint. The mystery is front and center with the beginnings of a relationship between Celeste and Shaw that I hope is designed to continue throughout the series. What we get in this book is enough to build on.

Harper does a good job at using misdirection to keep the reader guessing as to whodunit and I chewed through Person of Interest in one sitting. The problems I’ve mentioned were not enough to take me out of the story or keep me from enjoying this début romantic suspense novel and I look forward to reading the second Celeste Eagan mystery (In the Bag), due out in January 2017.

I am not normally a mystery reader. I prefer stories that have fur or fangs. Still, occasionally I will wander out of my comfort zone if a book catches my attention. At the time Person of Interest came to my attention, there was no cover. I had to base my ‘will I/won’t I’ solely off the blurb. So let’s see, single mom who is a teacher, ex-hubs (teacher) is with a hussy (probably also a teacher), finds her boss dead (interest is perked), attractive uptight Detective (definitely interested), jail, dead bodies, stalker – SOLD! Count me in.

In case you didn’t know, this is author Emery Harper debut book and IMO I feel she did a stellar job. For starters, kudos on the blurb! I know authors HATE writing blurbs, but it was definitely a great one since she lured me, a non-mystery reader, into actually wanting to read it (Remember…no cover at the time). Second of all, the story itself. Once I started reading, frankly I couldn’t put it down. I giggled and snorted the whole way through. Told from first person POV, we get to experience Celeste’s witty, sometimes sarcastic, charm. Oh who am I kidding, she’s great, the perfect heroine who had a way of turning up at the wrong place at the right time. All those little trips to jail, stumbling across dead bodies, eventually becoming a pariah until the whodunit comes to light, as I said before, giggles and snorts the whole way.

Now what would be a good story without a good supporting cast! Let’s start with her bestie, Levi. Very best friend, very gay - very best gay friend. Thankfully, he’s not stereotyped into the gay best friend category. Paige, her too smart for words daughter. Again, not stereo-typical. The ex-husband Colin and the hussy, umm, I mean Naomi. Honestly, I had my suspicions about him and was expecting the whole story to play out differently because of those suspicions - to find out how wrong I was. I, of course, saved the best for last. Detective Shaw Muldoon. Honestly, I was a little surprised he was the romantic interest in the story. So straight-faced, so uptight, and then I switched over to thinking so sexy! He’s not one of those over-the-top macho cops. His strength is one of those that slowly grows on you, and then the next thing you know, you can’t live without him.

So there you have. Great read, lots of action and intrigue, and loads of laughs to keep it all moving at a fast pace. Not bad for a first book! Author Emery Harper is definitely an author to watch. I’ll be recommending her and Person of Interest to my book junkie friends.

"Can you honestly tell me you'd go into a police interview without a lawyer present?"

Person of Interest - is a cozy mystery story that has you guessing until the end. Celeste is one step away from being sucked up by quick sand. If you think your day is bad, just imagine hers. No matter how hard she tries to prove her innocence, something goes wrong and more fingers point to her. She is the talk of the town but not in a good way. People just love rumors

Celeste is a divorce mom, theater teacher and free spirited woman. She is sarcastic, witty, funny and a jumble of mess. Poor Girl... Her trouble starts when she finds a dead body and it doesn't slow down. In walks Detective Muldoon and his stick by the books procedure. While Muldoon conducts his own investigation, Celeste is doing her own with the help of her best friend Levi, which only seems to land her in hot water with the detective. The story has you going up and down like a roller coaster because as you think you know who did it, they have an alibi...

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a cozy mystery. The character are well developed. The story keeps a reader drawn in to the every end.
