I'm sorry, but i'm not a big fan of popcorn, I hate how it gets stuck in my teeth, but that is why I don't eat it much but I do love Caramel Corn. I'm a sucker for a cozy mystery with a food theme so I decided to try Pop Goes the Murder.

Antoine Belanger, ex-husband of Rebecca Anderson, she is the owner of a gourmet popcorn shop called, POPS. They feature popcorn breakfast bars and fudge.Antoine wants to feature Rebecca on his travelling cooking show, Cooking the Belanger Way. It's no secret that Antoine wants Rebecca back.

Rebecca finds Antoine's assistant for the show, dead in a hotel room bath tub electrocuted with a blow dryer. Sheriff Dan Cooper thinks that Melanie may have commited sucicide but Rebecca thinks other wise. Then it turns out she was in fact murdered and Antoine is arrested for her murder when it's discovered that Melanie was stealing from him giving Antoine a motive.

Rebecca sets out to find out to help Antoine and find out who killed Melanie believing that Antoine couldn't have possible done it, despite what other people think of him. Melanie what not the easiest person to get along with.

Grab some popcorn when you read Pop Goes the Murder. The book was very slow paced but then it picked up and I was not able to put it down and it was well worth the read. Characters were spunky and unique, the story was well plotted and made for an exciting read. Tasty treats and murder are popping up in Pop Goes the Murder.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

In this second installment of this fun series Rebecca’s ex-husband is in town to film a piece for his television show featuring her shop, POPS. She knows she needs publicity to grow her customer base but being summoned to go over details again with his assistant has her a little fired up. But when she arrives and finds the assistant dead she is shocked – which also happens to be the victim’s cause of death. Just as shocking is that the police think her ex is the killer. He has his faults but there is no way he would have killed anyone. Rebecca pops herself right into the middle of the investigate to prove his innocence. This makes her brother-in-law, Sheriff Dan Cooper, a little hot under the collar.

Rebecca Anderson is a strong protagonist but for me her pregnant sister stole her thunder just a little bit this time. She is due very soon and anyone that has been pregnant or around someone pregnant knows those last couple weeks are stressful and an emotional time for the mom to be. She expects her sister and husband to be at her beck and call even when someone has just been murdered. She wants her sister to leave the investigation to the police/her husband and to stay away from her ex-husband. She wants her husband to do his job but remember his family could increase at any moment. It is all very humorous and something easy to identify with. Great one liners, loved it.

Rebecca also has a very lovable canine companion, a very smart one. She has a great friendship with her brother-in-law, trying at times, but a strong bond. She seems to be getting more comfortable with her decision to buy her shop and her life in Ohio. I hope she continues to move forward and we see less of her ex.

The plot has a nice flow. I did figure out the real killer early in the story, but the book had other things happening that held my interest to the very last page.

This story popped for me in several ways. A strong addition to this series. I am excited for the next book.

4-1/2 Stars. Rebecca Anderson is determined to make her new popcorn shop business a success. Her ex-husband, Chef Antoine Belanger, invites her on his television show and Rebecca wants the prime exposure or she wouldn't encourage his presence in her life. While in town to film the episode, Antoine's main assistant, Melanie, is electrocuted in her hotel room tub. Rebecca's best friend/brother-in-law, Sheriff Dan Cooper, must determine if the death is suicide or foul play.

The plot steadily moves along with action and humor to entertain readers. The killer is a bit obvious, but this book is a fun, satisfying read regardless. I love Rebecca's intelligent labradoodle, Sprocket. The blossoming romance between Rebecca and lawyer, Garrett, is also highlighted in the story.

Note: This story contains language some readers might be sensitive to.

Author Kristi Abbott has popped out a tasty addition to her Popcorn Shop Mystery series!

Ms. Abbott wasted no time buttering readers up with a long, drawn out beginning. She had us into the action of POP GOES THE MURDER in a jiffy. And the story just kept getting better.

A well written tale, with a mystery that was hard to solve, POP GOES THE MURDER was even better than book one in the series, KERNEL OF TRUTH. I could really see the growth in the characters, and there was a nice flow to the story.

My only negative is, I can’t quite connect with the protagonist Rebecca Anderson. She seems a bit stuck up at times and be a little rude. Though, it could just be me. Some characters, like people in real life, can take a while to warm up to.

If you enjoyed the first in this series, you’re in for a treat with POP GOES THE MURDER.

Make sure to check out the back of the book for two yummy popcorn recipes!

Rebecca's popcorn business is doing well but she has allowed her ex-husband, celebrity chef Antoine Belanger, to come to Grand Lake and film at her shop. She arranges an interview with his assistant Melanie in Melanie's hotel room. Rebecca is shocked to discover Melanie lying dead in the bathtub with a hair dryer in her hands. Sheriff Dan, Rebecca's brother-in-law, suspects Antoine. Rebecca is certain Antonie is innocent. The more she gets to know Antoine's crew, the more she is convinced Antoine is not a murderer. Could it have been the mysterious dark-haired woman Rebecca spotted at the hotel or Antoine's stalker or perhaps one of his obsessive followers known as the Bellanger Bunnies? Any of the crew could have done it as well for it seems no one liked Melanie. Rebecca is determined to clear Antoine's name and get him out of town before she gets sucked back into his orbit. Her relationship with Garrett has been good so far and she'd like to keep it that way. Rebecca's sister Hayley is about to give birth to baby #2 and is driving everyone crazy. Dan has every reason to want this case solved quickly and Rebecca plans to help.

The mystery plot was rather weak. I guessed the identity of the murderer rather quickly and never had any doubts as to whether I was right or not. The story goes on too long and I skimmed some of the extraneous details to make sure I was right before I went to sleep. There are a few red herrings but it's pretty obvious. Rebecca should have figured it out too. I didn't like how clueless she was or how devoted she was to proving Antoine's innocence. There was also too much time spent on Hayley's crazy pregnancy drama. I could have done without Rebecca's melty feelings about the baby. I hate babies and toddlers and really did not like this aspect of the plot. The romance was sweet and I was glad Rebecca is mature enough to talk to her man to clear up misunderstandings right away.

The characters are what makes this book shine. Besides Rebecca, who is actually a fairly human character with emotions and sometimes poor decision-making skills and sometimes good ones, there's her sister Hayley. Hayley is crazy but she loves her family and wouldn't want her life to be any other way. Dan is a nice man but a tough sheriff. He wants to do his job and his duty to his family and it's stressing him out. I liked him though. Rebecca's boyfriend Garrett is too nice for her. He only hints at backstory and past hurts that have shaped his character. Rebecca's friends Annie, Barbara and Faith are the comic relief. I love man-hating Faith. I especially love Sprokett, Rebecca's Poodle. He's very intelligent, protective and loving-just as a good dog should be.

We get to know Antoine very well in this story. He's a classic narcissist who comes up with an idea of how he wants something to be or an idea of his reality and then blocks out everything to the contrary. He doesn't listen to Rebecca when she tells him WHY she left him and he doesn't really care. On the surface it seems like he loves her and cares about her but then she discovers something that makes her remember why she left him and determined not to return to his entourage. Antoine's crew are not a very pleasant lot. Melanie was not a nice person but didn't deserve to die. She was a psychopath for sure but it all worked out in Rebecca's favor and in Melanie's favor-at least for Melanie her plan worked for a time. There's Lucy who is second-in-command after Melanie and obviously devoted to Antoine. Brooke is Lucy's rival for Antoine's affections and the role of assistant. She is even more annoying than Lucy who at least knows her job. Jake, the only male crew member who plays a supporting role in the story. He is not all that appealing but has some depth.

One last new character introduced here is Rebecca's new assistant Dario. While I liked him a lot, especially the way he handled the nosy reporters, I thought Rebecca was crazy to hire him without references. He seems good for business.

The small town setting in Ohio is fairly bland. There's the lighthouse in the distance, indicating the lake, but other than that, this could be any small town in America. The locals seem a close-knit bunch and I can see why Hayley and Dan would want to raise their family there but I think Rebecca should have moved to Toledo or some other city near enough to visit her family. I find it hard to believe there's such a market and money to spend on gourmet popcorn! Speaking of popcorn- why are there only two recipes here? I want that recipe for Pumpkin Spice popcorn breakfast bars! They sound wonderful! I also want to try popcorn fudge-yum!

Popcorn shop owner Rebecca Anderson is back in the second of the Popcorn Shop mysteries. She's recovered from the death of her mentor (in book 1), but now has to deal with her ex-husband's continued intrusion, her new relationship with a local lawyer, her anxious pregnant sister, and worst of all, the death of one of her ex-husband's employees, which leaves her ex as suspect #1.

I really like this series. Rebecca is smart and practical, but still fun. Her dog Sprockets is adorable (but needs more to do). Her family is great, and adds a personal dimension to the story. Her ex-husband is obnoxious, but we finally learn why. Plus, she's got two reasons to solve the crime -- to exonerate her ex and to prove that her cop brother-in-law isn't going after her ex because he hates him. Most mystery readers will be able to guess who the killer is long before the end, but it's still a great, fun story.

While Rebecca has tried to distance herself from her ex-husband, famed TV chef Antoine, she can’t turn him away when he comes to town to do a segment on her popcorn shop POPS. However, Rebecca’s meeting with Antoine’s assistant Melanie turns into a shock when she finds the woman electrocuted in her bathtub. When the police go from suicide to murder, Rebecca thinks they’ve picked the wrong suspect. Can she find the right one?

I enjoyed the first book in this series, and I was delighted with this one as well. Several of the characters I liked in the first weren’t around much here, but the characters we did see again or meet for the first time or than made up for it. The plot was strong, with plenty of suspects to choose from. I did figure things out a bit early, but that wasn’t an issue since I was having so much fun.

NOTE: I received a copy of this book.

This is the second book in the Popcorn shop series. Rebecca Anderson runs a popcorn shop called , POPS. In this book, Rebecca's ex husband is accused of murder. She doesn't believe he is guilty. She hires a lawyer that has a connection to her current boyfriend. She is also a lawyer that strikes me as the type to do anything to win a case.

I really enjoyed this book. I always love the porch scenes between Rebecca and her brother in law. I also loved the scenes with her sister. They were too funny. I grew to like the characters more than i did in the first book. I liked the mystery itself and had a hard time figuring out the killer until the last few chapters when it became obvious. Definitely reading the next book.

I loved Kristi Abbot's Pop Goes the Murder. This is the second book in the series and it is very well written. I enjoyed the story about Rebecca and her Ex-husband. The mystery was fantastic and while I thought I had it figured out, I really did not have all the answers until the final twist was revealed. I really hope that this series continues as I am really enjoying getting to know the characters as well as the popcorn shop idea. There is so much to build on in this series. Great relationship between Rebecca and Dan, the police chief who is her best friend and her brother in law. This is a fun book, even with the murder mystery this story has a lot of heart.

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed. I thought that Rebecca was funny, spunky and full of life. Her pregnant sister, Haley, was a control freak, and I really enjoyed reading about her actions at the end of her pregnancy. This provided many laugh out loud moments for me. Best friend, Dan, who happens to be Rebecca’s brother-in-law, was a capable sheriff and I enjoyed the fact that he was not a bumbling law enforcement agent ( you see that a lot in cozy mysteries). I found that refreshing. And of course you have to love Sprocket, Rebecca’s smart and lovable dog. I have had my fill of Antoine, Rebecca’s ex-husband. I got a little tired of Rebecca always doing his bidding and I hope he does not make an appearance in the next book. But overall the characters were likable and people I would like to get to know.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The mystery was well plotted and there were enough suspects and twists and turns to muddy the waters. I was pretty sure that I knew who the killer was, and I happened to be right for once. But that did not take anything away from my reading enjoyment.

The small town setting was an enjoyable place to visit. I liked the fact that the were references to Cleveland and Lake Erie because I am from that area. It made the reading more personal to me. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and I felt like I was right there, watching all the action taking place around me.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. If you like great characters, laughable moments and suspense in your reading, this book is for you.

This is such a fun cozy. Main character Rebecca Anderson owns Pops! a shop where there is popcorn in everything, including the fudge! Breakfast bars made with popcorn are a big draw to her shop. Rebecca’s ex-husband is celebrity chef Antoine Belanger. He and his film crew are in Grand Lake, Ohio to film a segment featuring Pops! The murder victim is Antoine’s assistant and her body is discovered in the first few pages. Antoine is arrested and Rebecca is “on the case” much to the chagrin of her best friend/brother-in-law chief Dan.
Rebecca has a cast of quirky friends, her sister is about to give birth, her boyfriend is not excited by Antoine’s arrival in town and Antoine’s groupies are out of control. The dialogue is witty, funny and simply fun. The suspects are many with a few subplots thrown in for good measure. With only 3 books in this series I’m going to be sorry when I’ve finished it.

A story about one of my favorite foods popcorn. Rebecca runs a popcorn shop when she isn't helping her brother in law Dan, the Sherriff of the town chase down murderers. I love the characters Rebecca, Dan and Rebecca's sister Haley. Plus of course love interest Garrett. I am kind of tired of her ex the famous cooking show chef Antoine and really hope he disappears. The story line was good and though I guessed the murderer before the end the book had twists and turns and some great side stories like Haley about to give birth and is positive that neither her husband and sister will be there for their roles in the birth. Of course I can't forget to mention her poodle Sprocket who is cute, adorable and is Rebecca's constant companion. A really good read.

So I was strolling through the library for something to read and realized I read the first book to this series though I had a vague memory and figured I should continue.
In this book Rebecca ex husband is in town to put her shop on the map along with this her sister is about to give birth.
But can’t read a cozy without death and her ex is now accused of killing his assistant. So now we’re in this we gotta find out who really did it.
Have to say I enjoyed the story I enjoyed Following Rebecca and her dog and I knew the killer probably halfway through the book and I turned out right.
I saw there is one book left and am curious how this will go.

One of the small pleasures in life is starting a brand new series when it first releases and then anticipating the next installment. Such is the case with Kristi Abbott’s Popcorn Shop Mystery series and I’ve been eagerly waiting for her newest release, POP GOES THE MURDER. Her protagonist, Rebecca Anderson, is adorably sassy and the clever, snappy dialog kept me entertained. At times I wondered if the author had been a stand-up comedienne in a former life… she certainly knows how to deliver one-liners! The mystery starts off with a bang from the very beginning and the pace never lets up. The story is well plotted with plenty of suspects that kept me guessing and turning pages and I devoured the book like it was a bowl of buttery popcorn. The cast of supporting characters are also well developed and add depth to the subplots. Rebecca’s evolving relationship with her very pregnant sister (who brings added humor to the story) is sweet to watch as it unfolds. Rebecca also seems to be finding her place in the small Ohio town. After her ex-husband brings the world and drama of celebuchefs to the quiet town, it appears she embraces her choice even more.

Rebecca owns POPS, a gourmet popcorn shop and there is plenty of food mentioned to make you hungry. Fortunately, Kristi provides a couple recipes at the back of the book. I tried her recipe for Bacon Pecan Popcorn….oh my! When I read through the recipe I thought it sounded good. But when I made it and started sampling this delightful concoction I literally could not stop eating it and thought it worth every single calorie!

I willingly provided a review after receiving an ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I made it 3/4 of the way through this book and abandoned it. I realize I do not like this author's writing style. Her sentences are clipped and the character's thoughts are unfinished. She writes with little to no elaborative detail. There is very little description of Rebecca's popcorn shop, of the types of popcorn treats Rebecca makes, or how they are made even though the series is called The Popcorn Shop Mystery Series--there is too little mention of popcorn for my liking. This book was a confusing mess of back and forth dialogue between characters, trying to solve the murder of Rebecca's ex-husband's assistant. The first book The Kernel of Truth was better. This one was so disappointing, I have no interest in reading the third book in the series and I'm taking these books straight to the consignment shop.

Rebecca cannot seem to shake her ex-husband. She left California for Ohio, providing a very large chunk of the U.S. between them. Unfortunately, he just can’t leave her alone. He shows up in Ohio wanting to feature her popcorn shop on his wildly popular cooking show. Of course, Antoine has ulterior motives, but Rebecca would be remiss in her duties if she let such a fantastic opportunity for her shop and her town slip through her fingers.

When the crew lands in Ohio to begin setting up for the filming, Antoine’s right-hand woman, Melanie, is found dead in the tub in her hotel room. Antoine is implicated, and eventually, arrested for Melanie’s death. Antoine may be a lot of things, but Rebecca knows a murderer is not one of them. She takes it upon herself to figure out who had it in for Melanie and was willing to let Antoine take the fall for the murder.

With a lot of hard work and effort, Rebecca turns up several potential suspects that keeps the reader guessing around every turn. Even with all the potential suspects and their solid means and motives, I still figured out who was responsible for Melanie’s murder long before the climactic scene dramatic reveal. The knowledge didn't detract from the story at all.

The world building is wonderful, and I felt like I was in the story. The author continues character development, providing more details about Rebecca, Garrett, Antoine, Dan, and Haley. Rebecca is becoming more comfortable, has wonderful friends, and a great boyfriend. The absolute last thing she needs is her ex-husband following her around, or the death of one of his crew members to prolong his stay. That sounds a bit insensitive to the death of Melanie and that is unintentional. Rebecca’s insistence on helping prove Antoine’s innocence goes beyond the normal expectations of former spouses.

I enjoyed Pop Goes the Murder. The characters are fun, the mystery is creative, and I love the small-town setting and Rebecca’s popcorn shop.

My review copy came from my public library’s interlibrary loan program.

I am addicted to this series! This is the second in the series, after Kernel of Truth and before Assault and Buttery. Rebecca Anderson’s ex-husband, Antoine, is in her home town and she is none too happy about it. Sure, he is there to do a segment on her shop for his TV show which promises to give her a huge uptick in customers (and therefore, cold, hard cash!) but she has to put up with his constant attempts to get her back. One might think having a handsome, suave tv-personality chef trying to win back your affections would be a good thing. One would be wrong. Among all of his flaws, however, Antoine is no murderer, so when he is accused after Rebecca finds her lifeless body electrocuted in a tub, she feels duty-bound to help him – even if it ticks of her family, boyfriend, and members of the public. Add to this the impending birth of her niece and said boyfriend’s ex-partner coming to town, and Rebecca has got her hands FULL!

I just can’t say enough about this series and this author. I will admit – I was a little hesitant to read a popcorn store mystery. Really? And the cover looks more than a little childish. Don’t judge a book by its cover! Literally! The author’s zingy wit is a joy, and the characters come to life in her books. I wasn’t able to figure out the murderer TOO early on, and I enjoyed seeing how Rebecca’s relationships evolved. There are (so far) only three books in the series. I did reach out to the publisher to see if there would be more, and they were noncommittal. I can only hope more readers discover this amazing series which will prompt more entries into this series.

I wanted to like this, but Rebecca is not my cup of tea. The woman has zero boundaries with her ex and ignores boundaries others (her brother in law) gives her. She treats her sister horribly, consistently choosing the ex over everyone and then pretending he's irresistible, and she just doesn't understand how he continually manipulates her.

Because, my dear, you care about him more than everyone else in your life. Including your poor dog. They deserve to be treated better, but the theme of this book is pretty much doormats all around.

The food slobbery is...unbearable. but it's okay, because Antoine and Rebecca are too good for this town and the people who live there. Including her family and the guy she pretends she is interested in. They are obnoxious. Which surprised me since I am a bit of a food snob. But I also understand there is a place for that and there are many, many more places where it's just being a jerk.

The mystery was okay, but easily solved. And even there, Rebecca is a complete idiot. But it's okay since everyone forgets about her chasing someone down because she thought she had the authority to demand answers. That just goes away, never to be mentioned again.

I'm being a bit generous with 3 stars, it's more like a 2.5 for me... I loved the first book but this one was much different from that title. The killer is obvious from the start of the investigation, Dan's "police work" is horrific and clearly biased against Antoine, Haley's character is so one note in this book - overbearing. And why didn't Antoine tell his own lawyer what Rebecca met up with her to disclose??? It feels like the answer was slapping everyone in the face and they just didn't notice somehow.

Additionally, on pages 212 and 213 the author chose to make some pretty sick remarks from Dario and Annie regarding the harassment of two different men -

Rebecca: "XYZ was trying to force him to sleep with her."
Dario: "At least she had good taste."

Faith: "Oh please. He may be saying he hated it, but I bet he liked the attention."

This main character in this book is the owner of a popcorn shop who was married to a well-known chef. When he comes to town to feature Rebecca's shop on his show murder follows. Rebecca finds his dead assistant in a hotel bathtub and covers the body. Antoine (the ex) is arrested. Rebecca does her best to find the real murderer. Her detecting is complicated because her very pregnant sister wants to know where Rebecca is every second. Will Rebecca be able to watch her nephew while her sister gives birth or will something happen to keep her being able to be there?

Rebecca owns a poodle who seems to be always with her or with her current boyfriend. Sprocket is a very important member of Rebecca's family.

This is the second book in the series "Popcorn Shop Mystery" and this time Rebecca is solving a murder to get her ex-husband off the hook of a murder charge. Antoine is super annoying and I hated how Rebecca catered to almost his every whim. I guess we will find out in the next book and
after Antoine and his crew leave to find out if the publicity will spike up business. The parts with the Bellanger Bunnies seemed too ridiculous to be real. I should have seen that Lucy was the murderer especially after Antoine overlooked her in favor of Brooke. I was so glad though at the end of the book that Rebecca's shop didn't burn down completely.

Second in the popcorn shop mysteries, this novel was still fun and refreshing but unfortunately plagued by the same problems as the first one. I guessed the villain right away, to the point where the fact that none of the characters had figured it out was hard to believe. Also, the heroine is still a doormat around her ex. The author does do a good job of making Antoine unacceptable but somehow still a tiny bit endearing. However, that bit of good characterization is ruined by the way Rebecca's sister is a raging bitch in this one. Pregnancy is no excuse to be that rude and demanding of people.

Rebecca Anderson has tried her best to move away from her famous ex. He is a celebrity chef.
He offers to publicize her show on TV and it is a great offer for her.
Unfortunately, when Antoine comes to town, trouble follows!
His assistant is found murdered in her hotel room.
Rebecca gets pulled back into helping Antoine sort out who is guilty since he gets arrested for the crime. She knows Antoine is not a killer.
But there are many suspects because it turns out his assistance was not liked.
And there is a stalker in town as well.
A fun cozy with a lot of crazy characters and a cooking show in the middle of it.

This was the first book I read in this series and I loved it so much.

Rebecca is trying to stay away from her ex husband but he keeps coming around her and her family. She finds his assistant electrocuted in her hotel and Antoine (Rebecca's ex husband) is arrested.

Rebecca knows he is not the murderer so she works to clear his name which pisses off her sister and brother in law and current boyfriend.

Rebecca is almost the third victim of the actual murderer but with the help of friends and family she barely escapes.
