Join Dave Pigeon and his sidekick Skipper on their quest to defeat the most evil cat in town. There will be funny bits, scary bits and biscuity bits...
Read this book at your own peril – you are not going to be trusting pigeons (and birds in general) again, particularly if you have biscuits in the house, because they will do anything to get at them.
According to Dave the pigeon these involve “epic plans” to secure those yummy treats. I’m more of the opinion these are amusing plans but I’m not a pigeon so maybe I don’t fully appreciate the nuances.
Dave Pigeon is a bird assured of his brilliance, Skipper is his friend who is typing the story and in my non-pigeon opinion the smarter of the two (but don’t tell Dave). Yes I realise that it sounds like I think these pigeons are real… they are very convincing pigeons.
I adored this book. It’s one of those fun reads you escape with for a short while. Between the story, art and ridiculousness of it all you’re just happy reading it.
Funny books. That's what our children get these days when they move off the reading scheme books at school and begin to read whole chapter books themselves. And thankfully when the books are as good as 'Dave Pigeon' that's more than OK.
Swapna Haddow has balanced the funniness with good quality writing in a way that perfectly introduces young readers to the concept of reading a longer book. The story is engaging (and funny - did I mention that?) and in this way reading stamina is really encouraged. The accompanying illustrations contribute to this - some pictures take up most of the page, allowing children to experience the feeling of having read a decent chunk of a book. The speech bubbles included in the pictures are also bound to be loved by young readers - children will feel great accomplishment as they read the text and the pictures together.
Dave and his mate Skipper are taken in by a kind human lady when Dave injures his wing. Unfortunately she also has a mean cat who, of course, must be got rid of so that the pigeon duo can live in the lap of luxury in the house, rather than the shed. Their catbrained schemes are, predictably, wildly unsuccessful until, accidentally, one of their plans does work. Even then they are faced with a further dilemma - they have to share their bounty with all the other birds in the neighbourhood. This amusing story of perseverance and resilience is a great way to introduce young children to the concept of never giving up and always trying again - who'd have thought two daft pigeons could be such good role models?
Another huge plus for this book is that it is the first in a series. So if it hooks your child in, you can build on the momentum by getting the two follow-up books for them to read too. And as Tom Fletcher picked this for his WH Smith Book Club 2 you should have no problems getting hold of this excellent (and hilarious) book.
Bought this book as a read aloud for my Year 3 and 4 class and I'm so pleased I did as it was a massive success! It was so popular that we are now reading book 2 as a class and I have bought books 3 and 4 to add to the class library.
The story follows the adventures of two pigeons (Dave and Skipper) as retold by Skipper, with many interuptions from Dave. In this first instalment, we witness Dave and Skipper's many attempts to get into the Human Lady's house where there is a plentiful supply of pastries and biscuits. The Human Lady shows lots of affection and kindness towards them and her home is abosolutely perfect, apart from the fact that Mean Cat lives there! Dave and Skipper devise several plans (which become increasingly ridiculous as the story goes on) to get rid of Mean Cat.
The humour in this story is pitched just right for my 7 - 9 year olds. There's lots of physical comedy with cats and pigeons banging beaks, faces and bottoms. There's times when the pigeons will interupt the narrative to have an argument about what actually happened, or ask the reader questions. There's Dave's logic which gets more hilarious the longer it goes on (the explanation of why cats like cheese had my class in stitches). And then there's the joke with the chapter titles which is brilliant. I finished one reading session by just showing my class how long the next chapter title was, without even reading it, and they speculated about what it might be all day until the next reading session. The illustrations are brilliant and add another level of interest and humour to the story. On some pages, I only had to show the picture to my class for them to start giggling.
I had such a great time reading this with my class and I know they enjoyed it too as they asked me to go straight on to book 2. Speaking of book 2, I would highly recommend having this one on hand when you near the end of book 1 as the second book will explain any questions you might have when you finish the first one.
This is a fantastic series that will be greatly enjoyed by young children and adults alike. I'm excited to follow Dave and Skipper on more adventures.
Not Pigeons I hear you say. Always trying to steal your chips or just generally being annoying. Well you obviously haven’t met any pigeons like Dave and Skipper. Join the duo on a laugh-out-loud adventure full of madcap plans, plenty of napping and lots of delicious biscuits (particularly the ones with jam in the middle).
Friends Dave and Skipper like nothing more than munching on a croissant. When they meet a Human Lady with a basket full of sandwiches, biscuits and croissants the pair can not believe their luck. But the Human Lady isn’t alone and Dave and Skipper immediately sense danger. Injured in an altercation with the Human Lady’s ferocious pet cat, Dave and his buddy Skipper find themselves in the care of Human Lady and reside in her shed for some recuperation and recovery time.
Having briefly experienced Human Lady’s house and the smells of delicious treats the duo quite fancy the home for themselves. If only they could work out a way to get rid of Mean Cat…
Adults and children will love sharing this book about the hilarious comedic-duo that are Dave and Skipper. Whether you are laughing at Dave’s over-confidence and bossiness or giggling at Skipper as he is required to carry out Dave's crazy plans, there is never a dull moment. It is the perfect comedy read with messages about friendship and bravery, and proof that pigeon will just about go to any lengths to get their beaks on a baked treat.
A very accessible book for readers who are beginning to read chapter books. The chapters are short and the book is illustrated throughout with entertaining sketches by Sheena Dempsey. The action and laughs are non-stop as the two pigeons plot their revenge on Mean Cat. Just make sure your biscuits are hidden away or you might find Dave with his beak in them.
Skipper tells us the story of Dave (well, himself and Dave) and how they find themselves admitted to the shed of a Human Lady, and hope to rid her house of Mean Cat... so they can live inside where the biscuits are. Good thing Dave has lots of plans then!
My 7-year-old was kept amused by this for a week of bedtimes. Skipper narrates, and sometimes Dave interrupts, which made for funny scenes for the listener, but tricky reading for me as I went back and forth with the voices.
Quick-moving story, lots of silliness, some great names (there's a parrot whose name takes as long to say as some of the chapters!). Dave and Skipper are a decent comedy pairing, one dimmer than the other and we liked the ridiculous plans they come up with to get rid of Mean Cat.
We will be looking for the next instalment to see how the story progresses. A good read for ages 6-10.
I’m not especially fond of pigeons. Goes back to my high school days when I upended my yogurt pottle, dumping its contents over my school uniform while trying to rescue my sandwich which was being stolen by a brazen feathered thief. Now, I nearly trip over the pesky purple birds on a daily basis while making my way around work. Yep, I’m back at school. The author seems to have a good handle on pigeon personalities as he describes Dave and his mate Skipper as they obsess about food and take advantage of a kindly lady who rescues an injured Dave. Most of the story follows their schemes against arch nemesis ‘Mean Cat’. It’s funny and I think I would’ve enjoyed it more if I’d seen the illustrations rather than listening to the audiobook version. There are more in the series and it’s great for those looking for first chapter books. 3.5 stars (audiobook).
3,5 sterren.
Spot on for the age group - a humorous early chapter book for emerging readers that is age appropriate, with a light easy tone, poking gentle fun at over-confident, self proclaimed hero, and pigeon, Dave, and his biographer, the patient, and secretly much smarter side-kick, Skipper. This first book in the series follows Dave and Skipper's efforts to remove 'Mean Cat', who stands in the way of easy access to baked good treats in Human Lady's home.
Perfect for ambitious Y2s, Y3s and Y4s looking for a fun easy read. I properly chuckled out loud. Read the first page to my Y3 and she's determined to get her hands on it before it goes back to the library. A true sign of success, that. Four stars because NO WAY I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT DAMNIT YOU CAN'T LEAVE ME HANGING!
Great book, on Amazon I think this book is aimed at 5-7 year olds and I see how this book would be perfect for children that Age. Good story line which would be engaging and funny to children. Illustrations that allow the reader to see some of the scenes being described. Part of a series and based of this book I will be reading the next ones too.

Great book! Fun and engaging with lots of eye catching illustrations! I feel that children can use this book as a script and take it in turns to become the characters and bring them to life. Also I really like how there is worksheets to relate and reflect on the book to help children to develop their reading comprehension.
The style of this book was immediately witty and made me laugh. The banter between the two pigeons was a pleasure to read and the illustrations were brilliant too.
*Please note: this review is meant as a recommendation only. If you use it in any marketing material, online or anywhere on a published book without asking permission from me first, I will ask you to remove that use immediately. Thank you!*
Read this in weekly Library sessions with Year 3. We loved the humour and the scrapes that Dave and Skipper got into. We decorated our library Christmas tree in DP baubles coloured in by students, blue tinsel and had a DP topper! They have begged me for book 2 in January!
Very funny and witty. I like when stories turn out to be more than mediocre, especially for younger children, which tend to be more dumbed down. Points down for not resolving the plot in the first book, but making a gateway to sequel. Not many though :-) Still wonderful & charming read.
A very light read which my class enjoyed. The sense of humour was about right for my class of 7-8 year olds and I thought the illustrations were excellent.
I was a little bit disappointed by the ending, it’s left very much ready for a sequel which while clever makes it less satisfying to finish.
This is a brilliantly creative chapter book. The characterisation of Dave and Skipper is spot on. I liked the emotional arc for Dave, which I wasn't expecting as I thought this would just be jokes. And also surprised and shocked by the cliff-hanger. Now I have to read the second!
Dan: Hahahaha! Very much enjoyed this book which is very funny and perfect for children coming off of levelled books. Looking forward to reading number 2! And 3! And even more!
