Scott stood back, extended his hand out, palm down . . . and waited. ”Come on now.”
Kate and Austin stacked their hands on his.
“What are we yelling?” Scott asked.
“How about Travelers?” Austin suggested.
“One, two, three, Travelers!”
Sapete a volte ci sono situazioni strane, eventi imprevisti e regali che non ti saresti mai immaginato. “OMG”, il primo volume della serie C U L 8 RTM è uno di questi. Un giorno mi è arrivata una mail, da un indirizzo che non conoscevo. Mi capita di ricevere mail strane, ma mi aveva incuriosito il titolo, perciò l’ho aperta e ho iniziato a leggere. Immaginatevi la mia sorpresa quando mi sono trovata un amichevole Bob, l’autore che ha scritto questa chicca a quattro mani con Kat (da qui il nome Bob Kat) che mi chiedeva se avevo voglia di recensire il suo nuovo libro. Quando ho letto “viaggi nel tempo” mi sono illuminata e ho detto subito di si. Ci ho messo un po’ ad iniziare la lettura ma ora che l’ho portata a termine posso dirvi che è semplicemente fantastica.
Kelly si è appena trasferita a Fort Myers Beach, Florida, per vivere con la zia dove scopre tesori nascosti e molti segreti. Stringe velocemente amicizia con il suo vicino della porta accanto Scott che ha la reputazione di essere il geek numero uno della scuola. Il migliore amico di Scott è Austin, un bellissimo e popolare quarterback. Austin decide di unirsi a Scott e Kelly in un avventura dopo che Scott ha inventato un modo per viaggiare indietro nel tempo e trovare una ragazza che ha chiesto il loro aiuto. I ragazzi risolvono il mistero ma restano con il dilemma se sia giusto o sbagliato cambiare la storia. Un membro inaspettato si aggiunge al loro trio, Zoey e insieme iniziano l’avventura di una vita viaggiando nel tempo.
Il libro è un YA a tutti gli effetti e vi posso assicurare che troverete solo un accenno di una possibile situazione amorosa. Si tratta di una storia di amicizia, incentrata su un argomento specifico e incredibilmente affascinante, quello dei viaggi nel tempo. La storia è raccontata in terza persona e questo consente di usare diverse angolazioni e seguire i protagonisti, quando questi vengono separati. Perché in tutto e per tutto questa è una storia corale.
Kelly sembra essere la protagonista, in realtà risulta il collante del gruppo, la ragazza è colei che porta insieme tutti i membri e fornisce lo spunto per iniziare l’avventura. Il suo arrivo a Fort Myers Beach consente il rinvenimento di un oggetto misterioso che darà il via a tutto, soprattutto alla scoperta della ragazza Wendy, che ha bisogno di aiuto. Kelly è stata educata in casa, non ha avuto mai grossi contatti con altri adolescenti, ma in qualche modo riesce ad integrarsi immediatamente con i due ragazzi che la inseriscono nel loro gruppo e la invitano a giocare ad un videogioco che riscuote molto successo. Con la zia ha un rapporto strano, ma lentamente riescono a raggiungere una sorta di equilibrio. Il fatto è che Kelly ha vissuto una terribile tragedia che l’ha costretta al trasferimento e non è facile per lei superare questo momento di sconforto.
Scott è la mente della situazione. Super smart, iper organizzato, pronto a tutto ha ogni cosa sotto controllo. Non solo trova il modo di saltare nel tempo, riesce anche a spiegarlo in maniera convincente. Ingegnere, informatico e storico, riesce a reperire qualsiasi tipo di informazione, ha una memoria impressionante ed è super timido. Con una famiglia sorprendentemente normale, una sorellina Lily sempre tra i piedi, Scott è capace di smontare un computer e crearci qualsiasi altra cosa. Fenomenale, in assoluto il mio preferito.
Austin? Austin è il classico all american boy, con il suo sorriso da pubblicità del dentifricio, il fisico temprato dal football e il suo carisma che gli consente di essere il re del suo liceo circondato e venerato da tutti gli altri membri del corpo studentesco. Ma dietro la sua aria da giovane giocatore si nasconde un animo gentile, una dolcezza unica e una fedeltà straordinaria nei confronti di Scott. Non ha nulla del classico pallone gonfiato che può rivestire i panni del jock, i classici campioni iper venerati da tutta la città come se il football fosse l’unica cosa che conta. Lui decisamente è i muscoli della squadra.
E per finire Zoey. Beh all’inizio ci viene presentata come la classica mean girl, quella che vuoi picchiare appena la vedi perché assolutamente antipatica. Ma come sempre mai giudicare dalle apparenze. Nel corso della storia si impara ad apprezzarla e a prenderla così com’è. Anche perché spesso ha delle soluzioni provvidenziali e si rivelerà un arma vincente. E come disse una volta Seth Cohen il The O.C. lei è la bella del gruppo.
Questi quattro ragazzi si ritrovano riuniti sotto il segno di un’avventura unica, e dall’esperienza che li porta ad affrontare pericoli molto più reali di quelli che si pensava, perché poi in effetti viaggiano nel tempo e cercano di risolvere un mistero tornando indietro negli anni ’60. Devo anche dire che Bob e Kat compiono un ottimo lavoro nel rappresentare e schizzare l’America degli anni sessanta donando al lettore un immagine fedele e ben riuscita.
Il particolare da non dimenticare? Una tartaruga con degli strass applicati sul guscio.
Consiglio la lettura di questo libro a tutti quelli che, come me, adorano i viaggi nel tempo e adorano le storie in cui i protagonisti sono dei ragazzi, migliori amici, che si fanno in quattro per aiutarsi l’uno con l’altro, senza per forza doversi innamorare. Io sto per immergermi nella lettura del secondo episodio BRB [Be Right Back] la cui uscita è prevista per il 26 aprile. Da oggi 19 e fino al 28 OMG sarà venduto su Amazon a soli 0.99 cents. Approfittatene. Non lasciatevi sfuggire l’occasione di leggere questo libro.

OMG is a fun tween novel with a pleasing blend of mystery, gently romantic undertones, and genuine teen interests. OMG, like CUL8R, is text-speak of course, and one of these teens is the sort of cool nerd who might quietly invent a cell-phone app then try it out, without being totally sure he’s thought through the consequences. Which, of course, makes for a fast fun adventure story, set in a mix of the present day and 1966. A chance to watch the original Star Trek, or listen to the Monkees! What could be wrong with that, well, except that it’s time travel and changing the past might be a little dodgy.
Kelly’s an excellent protagonist with a very convincing voice. Her body-image is as flawed as many teens’, and her self-confidence isn’t helped by the fact that her parents have just died, plunging her into a whole new life with a new school on the horizon. But neighbors Scott and Austin befriend her, and soon she’s clearing out her aunt’s garage, finding Edison’s long lost Spirit Radio, and wishing she could save everyone. But perhaps, with friends like these, there really might be an app for that.
A great ensemble cast is gathered together. Today’s high tech teens struggle, sometimes hilariously, to cope in the not-so-distant past. And pitch-perfect dialog coupled with a wonderful sense of timing make this is a really good, quick read, with fine values, exciting adventure, and even some pleasingly wise snippets of food for thought. This looks like a really fun series, and it’s well worth following.

Never expected this book to impress me..but it really did and I am happy.
Kelly, a teenager from Texas, who recently lost her parents and moved in with her aunt Jane, soon become friends with her neighbours - Scott and Austin. Scott, a techy teen, who have only one friend, Austin, is good at inventing new things and playing video games. All three share their interest towards video games and their friendship starts growing. Scott and Kelly finds a 'Spirit Radio', the device which talks to the dead, originally found by Einstein himself, in Jane's garage. Scott improves the radio with a better antenna and the kids hear someone called Wendy calling out for help.
Soon, the kids learn more about Wendy and try to see what mystery is there behind her death. Scott finds a time travel machine to go back in time and help Wendy. This is where you should buy the book and read the rest for yourself.. :) But I assure you, its great!

Kelly was a student in high school when her parents were killed in an auto accident. Still needing a guardian, she went to live with her Aunt in another town. There she met two friends, Scott and Austin. While cleaning out her aunt’s garage, they discover an old radio. Scott tinkered around with it and was able to get it working, where they hear a voice from Wendy, claiming she didn’t do it and needed help.
Scott was able to configure their phones to enable them to travel and find Wendy, a high school senior who committed suicide. Through determination for wanting to help someone, they were able to uncover the real story of Wendy.
Quick read with a great bond of friendship. Not what I was expecting when I first started the book, it keeps you turning the pages. The characters are typical high school students and their parents, giving it a real feel. A true test of friendship, determination and the need to help others.

When Kelly’s parents were killed in a head on crash she went to live with her aunt Jane. From Texas to Florida she didn’t know anyone.She met Scott from next door and he helped her sort out the garage. They found a Thomas Edison radio. Scott being a smart kid and having a lab in his shed decided to try the radio along with a letter it was to talk to the dead. Aunt Jane said it was ok to let Scott experiment with it. Then came Austin, Scott’s best friend. Over the radio they heard a dead girl Summer calling for help. Scott found a way to go into the past . As they went another girl Zoey grabbed on to them and went along for the ride. They found Summer and became friends with her. Come to find out the coach was the one not to trust. Summer was saved and the kids went back home.

Kelly, a recently orphaned teen comes to live with her maiden Aunt in Florida and meets the pale, geeky, mad scientist boy next door. Which begs the question as to who the stallion on the cover is, a detail not revealed until fifty pages into the book. Or what the high school football quarterback has in common with this mad scientist beyond their common gaming fetish and the fact they're next door neighbours.
Like too many e-books this could use another edit. If you can make the leap of faith to buy time travel you’ll enjoy this tale.

I LOVE this Series. The characters are so real and true to their age. The stories and people that they meet are fascinating. I love the premise of making a difference and time travel. I would LOVE to do what they are doing.

Time to Travel
I admit, I love time travel stories& movies also, when done in an interesting way. Since I'm not a SCIFI snob,if the stories fun, as is this one, I don't mind when the method makes little sence.

This book, OMG (Oh My God) (CUL8R #1), reminds me of the genre of book that I loved to read when I was a teenager. A book with a main character that was close to my age, thinking about things that I thought about, but was also packed with adventure and didn’t get overly romanticized. Though I would say this book targets a younger age group such as teenagers or “tweens”, it is a fun read for an older age group as well.
This is the first book in the CUL8R series, and starts off with Kelly who has just moved to Florida. Not only is Kelly mourning the recent death of her parents, but she was moved from her life in Texas to live with an Aunt that she has only met a few times in her life. Thankfully her aunt turns out to be really easy going, even if she is an assistant district attorney. Soon after the story starts, Kelly is introduced to her first neighbor, Scott, while she is cleaning her garage. Scott is both a brilliant and quirky inventor, but basically comes off as a very cool “nerd”. While they are cleaning they come across an old box and letter that was addressed to Kelly’s great-great-grandfather, from THE Thomas Edison. In the letter, Edison states that inside the box was an invention he was working on but did not finish called the Telephone to the Dead. Together Scott, Kelly and Austin (Scott’s best friend and quarterback of their high school) test out the radio and start to communicate with a girl named Wendy. After researching who Wendy was, they find out that she was a very popular senior who had apparently committed suicide in 1966. Unsure of how else to help Wendy, Scott invents a time travel app that will get them back to 1966 so that they can save Wendy from her unfortunate death. But things get even more interesting when Zoey, another very popular mean girl who goes to school with Scott and Austin, accidentally travels back in time with the trio.
This was a very casual and enjoyable read for me. Though it does target a younger audience, I personally enjoyed it and it kept me reading. There has been so many times that the main character has annoyed me after a while (HOPEFULLY this doesn’t happen in the rest of the series!!) but I really liked the character of Kelly. It was so refreshing to have a fifteen year old NOT be COMPLETELY obsessed with boys and them liking her. The fact that she barely noticed that Scott and Austin might like her as more than a friend was spot on, and the author didn’t push it too much either. Books that are overly romanticized and characters that are constantly thinking about their emotions gets so exhausting after a while (Yes, I am talking about you Twilight) so I am very glad this wasn’t the focus of the story. Scott and Austin are different from the usual characters as well. Social status doesn’t affect their friendship or their personalities even though they are so different, which is very unlike teenagers nowadays. Scott is considered a nerd and Austin a jock, but they are best friends and neither acts better than the other. Then here comes mean and popular Zoey completely “changing her stripes” and being a genuine person. I am just so impressed with the characters and how the authors shaped them, I ADORE them.
This falls into a Young Adult/Adventure series, but I think it could also be considered as mystery due to the characters trying to find out what happened to Wendy. The clues the authors give away to the reader are fairly straight forward, and the reader gets to be included in the thinking process with the characters as they try to figure out what is happening. I noticed that it took the characters a long time to realize that Wendy didn’t actually kill herself, which I thought was rather obvious. It just seemed to take a long time to keep up and to actually realize what was going on, which didn’t make them look all that bright. The writing style is fairly straight forward and easy to follow, although there are a few grammar mistakes and formatting errors in the Kindle version. Also, the title seems to be a bit misleading from what the story is actually about so I wish it was different. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series and seeing where the characters travel to next, as well as seeing if all that time traveling is going to affect them after some time. This is a great story for teens who can relate to the character and love adventure, or adults who enjoy a youthful read.

When Chami and I were first pitched this book, it sounded amazing- a time travel action adventure- how could you possibly get any cooler than that? I’ll admit that my experience with time travel is limited pretty much to Doctor Who so the idea seemed even cooler because of that. While the time travel in this book is completely different, I definitely wasn’t disappointed with it.
I love Kelly as a character- I liked how energetic and positive she was despite the things that had happened to her. I much preferred reading about her starting to rebuild her life in a new place straight away rather than reading her moping around for most of the book. Scott and Austin were both awesome in their own way- I loved how they are almost completely opposite to one another but they still manage to be best friends. I really liked how they were so accepting of Kelly and how they really helped her to settle in.
Like the blurb says, the book is fast-paced and the plot is so unique and enjoyable that the entire book was very easy and quick to read. I especially liked that the time travel wasn’t just about going back in time for the sake of it but it was actually to solve a mystery and ultimately, to save a life. Though they were able to enjoy the time travel and all, I really liked that they had a higher purpose. The actual time travelling itself was written so differently than what I’d been expecting (no blue policebox here) but again, it was believable and unique therefore making the book even more enjoyable.
As for the writing, though the book is obviously written by both Kathy and Bob, I think it was written so smoothly that you really can’t tell any difference between the two. I don’t know how they organised the writing of the book (whether they took it chapter by chapter or whatever) but for me, it all just flowed into each other so nicely that I don’t think you could tell. The style was so easy to read and despite it being a time travel action adventure novel, there weren’t any terms or ideas that were completely foreign to me or that I couldn’t understand. As you can probably imagine, there’s nothing better than reading a book that has a wonderful set of characters, a good plot and an easy writing style.
The sequel, BRB, is waiting patiently for me to read in August which I am completely excited for now! Obviously I’ll be posting a review up for that too but until then, I would definitely recommend that all of you get your hands on this book as soon as possible- it’s completely brilliant.

I loved the plot for this book. I mean, really, who wouldn't want there to be an app for time-travel? I thought the idea was amazing... but the authors don't seem to know how much teenagers actually know. When the characters go to the sixties to prevent the death of a girl named Wendy they mention doing research on the time-period. Yet, when they get there, common expressions and behaviors seem to baffle them. Many of these are still used fairly often.
When Wendy says that her life is "boss" she has to translate it to "cool" for Kelly to understand it. People still say "boss." The girls didn't know that in school teachers measured their skirts with rulers or that they couldn't wear pants or that most girls wore pantyhose. One of the boys, Austin, was shocked that he almost got detention for chewing gum in class. And don't get me started on how they reacted to having to say the Pledge of Allegiance before class started. the small local school in my area still says the Pledge and gum chewing privileges depend on the teacher; most say no.
Zoey was shocked and horrified to hear that flip-flops were called "thongs." I've heard people still use that occasionally from people around my grandma's age.
That said, it can all be overlooked along with some of the spelling and grammar errors I also noticed. It was a good book; I just had trouble overlooking some of these issues. Even though, for the most part, they were minor ones.

To be awfully honest it wasnt what I was expecting, but it was still really good. I genuinely thought that with such a jokey author name that this book would be a comedy, when in reality it was quite serious in a lot of parts.
Warning contains mild spoilers from here: The MC faced some pretty big life issues, basically losing everything she had ever known, including her parents, and starting over. Then the dead girl obviously had been brutally murdered, and one of the other characters was sexually assaulted, though she seemed to shrug it off alright. All in all, it was heavy in a lot of places, which almost didnt work with the jumping into time travel premise, but I stuck with it because it had a great plot and I really really liked the characters. I'm afraid it lost a star for me because the romance was almost non-existant, just hinted at that it might come in a later book, and also because although the situation got resolved we never did find out the outcome of their altering time. Maybe that's to lead us into the next book, and I expect I will be getting it pretty soon, but I shall be most annoyed if it doesnt give those details!

Anyone would have a rough adjustment from Friendswood, Texas, to Fort Myers Beach, Florida. For fifteen-year-old Kelly, it's particularly difficult, especially under the circumstances. Kelly's challenges include having to make new friends, dealing with her well-meaning but OCD, district attorney aunt, and adjusting to a noisy but beautiful exotic bird outside her window.
Kelly's aunt asks her to help clean the garage by going through boxes of belongings stretching back generations. Scott helps her. He's her neighbor, her age, and a history buff and inventor. After Scott's friend Austin joins them, the trio of teens find themselves in an exciting adventure. An unexpected addition turns them into a somewhat reluctant foursome.
Bob Kat is the husband/wife writing team, Bob Wernly and Kathy Clark. OMG (Oh My God), A CUL8R Time Travel Mystery/Romance is a wonderful story for young adults as well as adult adults. The characters are likeable, and the dialogue flows right along. The story is exciting and fun, regardless of the age of the reader.

Thoroughly enjoyed this fast paced, exciting tale. This is a great teen/youth book. I not only enjoyed the story and plot but I fell in love with the characters. You don't see all of the teen angst that you so often see in the YA books. This group of kids actually encourage each other and affect each other positively. This story never had a dull moment. Is well written. Easy to understand. Never once skimmed or wondered if I was ever going to be finished with it. I like that this story brought the past and blended it with the present and gave an interesting twist to time travel. There is a good amount of suspense that keeps you reading and has me looking forward to reading the next one in the series! Recommend to anyone who likes YA genre books.

This was a fun read. The first part of the book establishes us with Kelly's surroundings, as she moves to live with her aunt in Fort Myers Beach, Florida, after the death of her parents. She meets some of the neighbors, and with a new friend, finds an old Edison invention that allows them to talk to dead people. After which, overnight, her friend designs a time travel app (yeah, just go with it, though), and a group of these kids plunges through a wormhole to save a girl their grandparents' age from an apparent suicide in the 1960s.
So, as believable sci-fi, not really, but the plot is fun and you find yourself really caring about both how Kelly is going to fit into her new life, and how the "Scooby gang" is going to fix this crime from the past. It's a quick read and a lot of fun.

Wow, what a great story!
Totally blew me away, I wasn't expecting this to be so good. Bob Kat is an exceptional writer and storyteller, can't wait for the next book in the series!
