The fairies in Never Land think that mermaids are nothing but trouble. So when Gabby befriends a mermaid, Kate, Mia, and Lainey warn her to stay away. But Gabby doesn’t want to lose her new friend! Tinker Bell and the Disney Fairies star in a magical early chapter book series for readers ages 6 to 9—Disney The Never Girls!
The Never Girls visited Pixie Hollow one day (I don't know what day it is, probably a Monday.) Gabby was collecting glass to trade with the fairies. The fairies told her never to go into the cave where she was collecting the glass without pixie dust, but she forgot to bring her pixie dust. The tide swept in and she couldn't get out. She didn't know what to do at all. Then a mermaid swam over. She said -"why are yooooo crying?" Gabby said "I'm trapped in this cave, I can't get out!" "OK," said the mermaid. "I can get you out." Well, the mermaid and Gabby made friends and she was able to get out after a while. The mermaid's name was Yooni. Later in the story Yooni wanted to take Gabby to when the mermaids sing at the full moon, but it can cause a storm and it turns fairies into bats. Then soon when all of the fairies, Mia, Kate, and Lainey came they took Gabby back home. Before that the mermaids told them that they should leave right then because they don't have control of their song power and they don't know what to do if it hurts someone. That was the end of the story.
I read this to our kids as retention work and my goodness did they love it! (Age 5 +3). It’s a fun and exciting book for blooming book lovers.
What will happen to Gabby after befriending one of the “evil” mermaids?? Are they really what she’s been told her whole life? Thorpe does a fantastic job leaving you with cliff hangers. The kids absolutely did NOT want me to stop after each chapter but it has a sweet ending that will leave you wanting to grab the next in this series.

Gabby, the youngest of the Never Girls, wants to meet a mermaid. But its quite apparent they are not friendly. One day when she is allowed off alone to look for sea glass, she meets a younger mermaid, just her same age. They strike up a secret friendship. When a pixie spies them playing, she tells everyone. Quickly the fun gets exaggerated into danger, and everyone is worried.
This is a really fun series, but I am pretty much over reviewing books in it. In the school library I rarely have series read past book one or two (with a few exceptions like magic treehouse –but even then –they don’t read them in order). This book is fun, high quality, and has a lot of heart –I like the lesson about accepting others and overcoming prejudice. Add this to your library if this series is popular, if not –invest in books 1-3 and see how it goes.
This was such a sweet and magical series. Both me and my little are sad it is over. This one didn’t have quite the magic as the other books in the series. It was ok. The conflict wasn’t as resolved as I would have liked. It was also a bit disappointing that so many of the mermaids were rude and bullies especially considering that my little was so excited that mermaids were in this one. I also wished there was more of a series wrap up since it was the last. It just felt rushed and unfinished. My little rates it 90 stars out of 5 (working on rating numbers 😂) and their favorite part was that Gabby made friends with a mermaid.
Something I find odd - the book appears to be the last in the series, given that it has been three years since it came out and no more have emerged and the author is on to writing a separate series with the same characters. Yet, there is absolutely nothing about this book that indicates the series is ending or that a new sequence of events is about to begin.
This wouldn’t have been a big thing at the time it was published, but it is making it super difficult to convince my daughter that there is no next book.
112 pages. Great adventures this time when Gabby finds a new friend in the Mermaid Lagoon. She wants to be friends but her sister and friends are warned by the fairies not to have anything to do with the mermaids. They told the girls not to even stay on the beach when darkness arrives. Lots of fun drama in this one. Girls will love it. Highly recommended for Grades 3-5.
Found this book at Sam's Club, and my then 6 year old decided to sit and read it all afternoon.
She struggles wanting to start chapter books, and this is truly a good in-between step. There are lots of pictures on every page and a fun storyline. Hope to find more at our local library soon.
This is a sweet series, especially good for very advanced young readers. The writing is great and features a varied vocabulary, but the content is light and appropriate for little ones.
Book 13 in the series and it is more of the same Disney goodness. This one finds Gabby taking somewhat of a lead role as she befriends a mermaid. What ensues is a good story about how we should look past differences and find the good in others, that preconceived notions aren't always true.
Summary: The Never Girls are back in book 13, Under the Lagoon! This time, Gabby has a new friend - a mermaid! She and Yooni the mermaid become close friends, but they have to keep it a secret from their sisters. Fairies think mermaids are dangerous, and mermaids think humans are dangerous! Will Gabby and Yooni's friendship ever work out?
Questions: 1. Who do you think was changing the waves to take Gabby's barrettes? Why? 2. Why do you think Rosetta feels guilty about telling the others about Gabby and Yooni? 3. What would you teach a mermaid about human life if you had the chance to? 4. Do you think the mermaids were purposely trying to put Gabby in danger? Why or why not? 5. What do you think will happen the next time Gabby visits Yooni? Citation: Thorpe, K., & Christy, J. (2016). The Never Girls Under the Lagoon. New York: Random House.
