No one remembered when he'd come to the mountains--it seemed that Preacher had always been there. He'd seen a great deal in the unmapped mountains and forests of the grand North American frontier. In fact, he'd just told a friend that he wasn't surprosed by anything anymore. But Preacher hadn't seen Nova Roma yet...
...A Deadly Dream of Glory
Auddenly, Preacher is faced with the strangest, most dangerous army the High Lonesome has ever seen. It's leader is a blood-mad fanatic right out of the ancient history books. All Preacher's got on his side are his brother mountain men: tough as hardtack good old boys like Philadelphia Braddock and Frenchie Dupree; the Arapaho warrior Bold Pony; and his surefire Walker Colt...

A madman has rebuilt Ancient Rome in the High Lonesome. When Preacher escapes capture after being subjected to gladiatorial combat and other ancient blood sport games he vows to return and end the tyrant’s reign. The final battle sees mountain men teamed with various Indian tribes taking on Roman legionnaires in one of the strangest and bloodiest battles the mountains have ever witnessed.
This story about Preacher was ok. I struggled with this story. I can usually read one of Preacher’s stories from cover in almost one sitting. This story took me a few days.
This was the most ridiculous book of the series. Come on now, a fully built replica of ancient Rome, marble everything, occupied by thousands of residential madmen who are playacting every roll from senators, military, vestal virgins, nobles down to plebs, and nobody outside knows about it? Absurd. Where did they recruit from? They cant all be captured people. What about the supplies needed just to maintain such a luxurious city? Its not like wagon trains were traveling with silks, exotic woods and gourmet foods. What about building the city itself? They built ROME in Wyoming(?) In less than 12 years without anyone knowing, on a failed fortune and a few slaves? Im very disappointed in this book.

This book has so many sub plots. To this end I was happy to read through them until we were introduced to New Rome!! From here some characters from the earlier stories and earlier books, were reintroduced to this final part of the book. Also, William W. Johnstone introduces much ancient Roman History, some through Preacher himself, who once again shows that he has worldly knowledge, and he is not just a rumble tumble Mountainman. Once again another "Preacher The First Mountain Man" book which I recommend to you to read.
It was definitely a different spin on history. I like the idea of mountain men facing off with Roman soldiers and seeing Preacher dominate like he always does. Even though it’s fictitious, it demonstrates the adaptability and capability of the mountain men. I have no doubt had similar events actually took place it would have happened in a similar manner that Johnstone portrays it. It was definitely worth the read!
Preacher goes thru hell or in this case, Nova Roma as he learns about the new city built in the Mountains, then he is captured by the soldiers, where he escapes and then gets captured again. He along with Phialdelpia Braddock, who was with him throughout all of this. After the two escape with two new friends Preacher aligns his friends and they combine to kick ass in only away Preacher can.
Didn't know they wrote science fiction, or is this fantasy?
Plot, space opera, horse soldier set to or even Hannibal? But no elephants. At least they substituted correct species for the lions. My only question is, how did new Rome get all the costumes, armor, cannons, stone, etc. gathered up in an area with no transportation? Or kept it secret?
Hard to describe without giving something away. Suffice it to say that Preacher is up against a strange opponent in this book, but I think most folks still like it, I know I did!
I love this series but this one seemed a trifle silly to me and it felt like the story was padded to make it longer. If you are big fan, don't pass it up. I may be too rough on it. This is just my initial impression.
Exciting from beginning to end. Preacher saves a brother and sister, Terry and Victoria Tucker in a snow storm. Then has to find a family to take them. William W Johnstone is an amazing storyteller.
This tale is so unique that it has to stand alone. The action is fast-paced and the adventure so different it made the pages keep turning. A thoroughly enjoyable tale.
Mountain Men vs Roman Legionaires! Your response to that sentence tells you everything you need to know. You may laugh, you may roll your eyes. I did both.
This continues to be a marvelous series. Preacher shows his stuff in this story as he takes on a settlement of people who think they build a New Rome filled with legions, public baths and arenas for gladiator fights. Find out how Preacher uses his wits to stop the lunatics from enslaving people for the sport of the Caesar.
