Laney Herder and Lady Celeste, are called upon by the Lupei of the Mountain Gypsies as their Soras, to help free their leader who had been kidnapped, and to stop a war between the realms of Sparo and the Gypsies.
Again, Laney is thrown into a world and politics that seem alien to her. She must follow her heart to do the right thing when all seems lost in a foreign land, when she stands against the swords of a nebulous enemy and the magic of one of the most powerful magic users of all time.
Can patience and understanding prevail in the face of an impending war that could change the face of the modern world?
International bestselling author of #lesfic f/f romance, scifi, urban fantasy, paranormal & more. Consummate geek & sarcasm connoisseur. Any pronouns are fine.
“Soras: Techromancy Scrolls” is book two of a (so far) three-book series featuring magical knights Laney and Celeste, gypsies and a land and adventure that will remind you of Middle Earth from you-know-what.
As much as I enjoy various SciFi, Urban Fantasy and various paranormal and time-travel type books, post-apopolyptic and stories of magic are normally my least favorite. Post-apopolyptic tales of rebuilding society in the far future and relearning technologies we know from our 19th century are unpleasant for me to contemplate as my newsfeed is filled with threats of nuclear war in North Korea, Iran, Syria….just ugh. Further, rediscovering the sciences of electricity, windmills and waterpower, or using magic, can for many authors be a lazy alternative to creating a believable and internally consistent story featuring futuristic or other-worldy or other-dimensional technologies.
In the hands of Erik Schubach, however, this tale is filled with terrific characters, the adventures of rediscoveries of technologies from “The Before Time” are humorous, touching and very very enjoyable, and using magic is not a panacea - using it extracts a price.
While Laney and her lover Celeste are openly a loving couple, this story isn’t really a romance. The couple fell in love in Book One; in Book Two their relationship is a done-deal. Laney is cutely bashful about PDA’s, and as is typical with Schubach, their private enjoyments are fade-to-black rather than explicit. Wonderfully for a feudal society that is essentially middle-ages Europe, no-one bats an eye about two women loving each other….ahhh if only 21st century earth were so accepting!
“Soras: TS” features Laney as more of an MC than Celeste or many of the other lead characters. She is a delight (though I still would like to spend some personal time with Celeste!!). This story features quick moving adventure, alongside further exploration of the “realms”, as seen through Laney’s eyes, and terrific political intrigues within and between the various factions of the earth.
I gave Book One 4*, and it missed 5* primarily because I doubted I would re-listen to it. (Speaking of listening, Hollie Jackson does a wonderful job immersing us into this book!). While the mystery may now be solved for me, I enjoyed this book so much I think I will re-listen to it. Not so much for the action sequences, but to enjoy again the delightfully slow and relaxed exploration of this wonderful world and the friendships, loyalties and loves of the characters.
5* for “Soras: TS” - very very highly recommended! Now, please….HURRY with getting Book Three on Audible!! ;)
The second installment in this series has Laney settling into her role as a Techromancer knight nicely. Training and tutelage taken a lot of time, but when a familiar rider arrives bloody with a message of rescue before war is declared by the Gypsies becomes paramount. Riding out to discover who is behind the kidnapping of Mother Udele and the murder of innocent people, Laney and Celeste travel with their comrades to free Mother Udele and discover more treachery afoot then once thought. Keep reading until the end...the politics are becoming convoluted in this one.

Another great addition to an already amazing series!
Another great tale of treason filled with magic and love. An absolutely thrilling story that you won't be able to put down. The characters have great depth and you feel as though you know them.
Another masterpiece by the ever so talented Erik Schubach. Can't wait for the next installment to this great series.
Laney Herder and her lover Lady Celeste are both Techromancers and the Soras of the Gypsies. Sounds pretty sweet, but being both magical knights and princesses of the local gypsy clan does come with some responsibilities. Especially when the Mother (leader) of their clan is kidnapped and Laney and Celeste must rescue her to prevent a war.
Overall I greatly enjoyed this novel. The characters are entertaining tho on occasion just a bit too sweet for my taste, but alas. This is a fluffy romance/ adventure/ fantasy hybrid and some leeway must be granted. Both MCs continue to grow, and its interesting to see the changes from the first to the second novel. The timejump between the novels really does its job wel, and provides for a good progression.
So in all this was a fun fantasy-adventurer, with a sweet romance and a likable couple.
A great sequel to a great series, what can we not accomplish in these modern times. It's great to see that Laney has grown into a bril knight. There is a lot of interaction with the People. Erik shows us more of the lower 10 and gives us a show of the Prince. He shows us the nobility, not as the stuck up class, but every day people. There are many laughs to this serious story, either by the characters being themselves or how the people look how far they have come and laugh because we have it much easier than us. This series should be read in order so you know the past of Laney and Celeste, and the realm it's self.
I generally don't leave reviews on books for the fact that I suck at putting things into words. Which is why I admire people who write great books.
This was a great book. As I said in my review of Adept, I love Laney. She's such an awesome character. I oddly feel sad that the book is over and I have to wait to join her on her next adventure. The characters in this book are well formed. They have depth, and that makes them likable.
I only finished Adept about a month ago, and I was patiently waiting for this to arrive. I had high hopes, and I definitely was not disappointed. I know it will be awhile, but I once again patiently wait for the next in this series!
I went back and reread the first book before I started this one. I read both in less than 24 hours. I absolutely loved this book. I love the world that Erik had built for these stories. It feels like I'm reading a mix between some role playing game and a novel but I actually feel like I live in the story. The characters have so many different nuances it is amazing, even the supporting characters. I absolutely can't wait for the next story in this world.
I should start this by saying That this author rocks.
If you have not read the first book in the series, GET IT. Eric continues this fantastic story in book 2 of the Techromancy series, Thank Heaven. I am now counting down the days until October.
Thank you Eric, I have been hanging on patiently waiting for the second installment and you did not disappoint.
I really enjoyed this second half of the Techromancer series. Laney is coming into her own, though she does so at a great price to her well being,. Celeste holds her own as well and I am happy to see that like in Music of the Souls, beauty and love lie in the eye of the beholder and Celeste proves that as she continues to embrace Laney who acquires more scars with every adventure she joins. Am anxiously awaiting the next installment.
A chance to unite her two people and three cultures is the latest adventure Laney takes in this fast paced ride through the uninhabitable lands! Follow Laney, Celeste and her friends, the Knights of Wexbury as they take on a diplomatic mission to rescue Mother Udele of the Gypsy People and prevent a war between them and the Altii. Meet new, amazing characters and see just how big Laney's family is getting. Best of all, enjoy the loving idealism of a land where it is possible to have diverse cultures that believe in loving one another and that these things are worth fighting for and protecting!
After finishing Adept, I knew that I was grabbing Erik's next instalment of Techromancy Scrolls. The novel expanded more on the future dystopian Earth, and I loved it.
The relationship between the two main characters is so sweet and lovely, it could be cliche or over the top being a same-sex couple, but Erik keeps it grounded and real.
Soras expands the lore to the mountain gypsies, and how they were the original people of this land and how they have a completely different magiks.
I look forward to reading the next instalment of this series.
Love this series, Love this installment the best. the developing power/skills, addition of the Gypsies, the other groups, the in fighting. Allot of room to take this wonderful world and group of characters.
I love the books just started the 3. one in the serie aswell, he writes in a very easy and humourus way , and I just adore Laney`s way of interacting with everyone.
3.75/5 — Enjoyed listening to this. The story is a bit juvenile but fun. Listened on audiobook. Think these are good to listen to as there’s nothing really profound that is going to make you want to go back to read over it again. The Performer is good with accents and character differentiation, but the emotional range felt limited.
I love this book and the world it is set in! Another wonderfully spun tale of Laney and Celeste! I was so excited to see more of The People. :) I am so enthralled by The Great Mother!
Beautiful addition! Going to get the third book now! :)
So let me review review this as an audiobook. Holly did an a awesome rendition of this book on audiobook. She brought the book to life. She brings the characters to life in different accents and styles of speech. Erik does an awesome job of bringing the characters to life and bringing the flaws of us everyday people to light. I live how he makes us normal people feel like they are normal love your writing style Erik. Holly shows off her mastery of linguistics be giving us different styles from classes and societies. For more, please see my kindle review. ;)
If you like this book, please see Eriks other books, as they are similar in style. (Audio please see the Valkyrie Series).
Another fine story of adventure and discovery with it favorite and brave knight. I thoroughly enjoyed this episode and look forward to more. I do worry that there won't be much left of the mini-knight as she seems to be the target more often than not. Hope her powers get stronger and new abilities arise as her self tactics out her in much danger. To the next book.
I read this In a bundle. And Like all the other books that I have read written by Erik Schubach. This book did not disappoint. His vision when reading has stories Are so real that you can well actually believe even if it's only briefly! And I greatly appreciate that you don't have to overlook typos.
A great follow-up! I was on to this book via Audible as soon as I finished the first one. A fun adventure with humor, action and flirting! At this time of this writing I am already into the next book. Once again I love listening to Holli Jackson bring the story to life.
We finally get a little more intimacy but still very PG 😀 All the same the series holds my attention to the very last page. I do feel the main characters in my imagination represent the Uber Xena and Gabrielle
I love this series! The stories and plots are so well thought out. Erik S. has very quickly become a go to of mine when I'm looking for a great story. Read on!
Bex, Misty, Mother Tianna, Brenda and Sara is starting to grow on me... these characters are a great example of how the add to the overall story telling of this amazing tell. I have come to enjoy most of this author and am now excited to read all about Wedding/s?
I like that in his story, the main protagonist does not always come out unscathed but seriously, does Lady Laney need to endure so much, I mean give the poor woman a break with all them beatings... I'm just saying?
But I'll admit this is what sucks me into the entire story telling :-)
Ok, I wasn't expecting a book. As good as the first book was. So I was pleasantly surprised when book two. Was just as good as book one was. I thoroughly enjoyed book two !!!
So now at 10pm on a Sunday night. I am writing this semi sorta review ... lol
So I'm telling you to take the chance. And get the second book. I'm betting you will enjoy it was well !!!
Started this as an audiobook, but finished under Kindle due to really poor audio quality of the recording. The narrator was fine, but quality of the recording was poor and it took away from the storyline.
A bit different than the other book, but no less enjoyable. Poor girl needs to take less damage though. Good character development , well written story, and the author is one of the best writers of conversations out there, even though there were less in this book.
