Everyone thinks him to be dead--or guilty. Without a word or sighting of Prince Lorrek of Cuskelom these last ten years, all believe the rumors of his crimes, which he is said to have committed, are true. However, when he finally returns to clear his name, Lorrek realizes the only way to find redemption is to become the very man they think him to be in this time when advanced technology challenges ancient magic to war.
Known as The Muse within her writing circle, Kelly Blanchard first became serious about writing at age twelve and worked hard to learn and fully comprehend the numerous elements of writing. She tutored and assisted teaching in college while she studied for her degree in English. After graduation she continued tutoring children and even taught several classes. Now she’s established an online community to assist fellow writers in understanding their craft.
Outside of writing, Kelly enjoys baking her world famous chocolate chip cookies, and she takes great pleasure in the company of her two cats and her Doberman Pinscher. From a family of five sisters and four brothers, she uses her experience with the family dynamic in her writing. She also practices Martial Arts, fencing, and archery—all important knowledge to have in order to write more accurately.
Writing and stories are important to Kelly. They are a reflection of reality, and she tries to capture that reflection in a way that sparks the imagination even if it means bending a few rules and blending several genres.
I am obligated to say that I received SIBR in exchange for an honest review.
I really loved it. There are a few spots here in there that were missed in editing, but it is no worse than any super famous out there author. It detracts in no way from the story.
This book focuses around quite a few characters, but they all have one thing in common: Prince Lorrek of Cuskelom. For the last ten years, he has been missing after committing some grievous crime. Most people think he is dead but a few, most notably his oldest brother Theran, hold onto the belief that he is alive. Which, of course, he is. The world is in turmoil though as a powerful magic user begins to take over countries, and Jechorm, a city thriving with technology, makes moves to pull Cuskelom into another war. The question isn't only what will happen, but what /did/ happen to bring the world to this point? And what role did Lorrek have in all of this?
The world-building here is amazing. It is reminiscent of the older fantasy works in its complexities. There are no two-dimensional characters, and quite a few badass females. I sincerely can't wait for the next one to come out.
I got a copy of this book directly from the author via her author page on Facebook. I am a huge fan of the fantasy and sci-fi genres, and have read many books that were one of those genres or the other, and this book blended them together better than I could have possibly imagined. The main character, Lorrek, is very sassy and made me laugh on quite a few occasions. His story is quite intriguing, and was revealed piece by piece in such a way that the reader is kept in suspense and wondering what in the world happened in the past; and when the past is finally revealed, the characters come beautifully and believably to life. I genuinely came to care about them. The settings were also quite unique, and details of each land made them very distinct from one another. The author knows how to tell a good story, and this book showcases that skill brilliantly. The only complaint I have is that the beginning was slow, and not as engaging as the rest of the book. Overall, this is a good read and I would recommend it to others.
What a ride! Kelly Blanchard covers the gamut in this novel, the first in a new series. What starts out as a traditional fantasy takes a turn into science fiction and while I didn't see it coming, the storytelling is so superb that you hard miss a beat. Without giving any spoilers, I think any reader will absolutely fall for these very well-drawn characters. You may not always love them, but their trials and tribulations surrounding the future of the throne of Cuskelom will keep you turning the pages, late into the night. Blanchard plays with not only the reader's expectations of what a fantasy novel should be, but also with the idea of linear storytelling as well. I was a little skeptical at first, but she pulls it off with great aplomb.
Bottom line, I'm hooked! Can't wait for book number two. How she'll top this, I have no idea, but I'm certainly excited to find out!
This novel has a very interesting premise and strong world building. It has kingdoms that are full of magic and others where science and technology key. It had the feel of a fanfic AU with the serial numbers filed off. (I enjoy fan fiction so this is not an insult in any way.)
I liked the book. I liked the story. I enjoyed the characters.
What keeps the book from having five stars is the head hopping; showing more than one characters thoughts and actions inside of the same scenes. In a few places up to four characters. I had trouble following who was thinking what and why. There were also some turns of phrases that made me stop and threw me out of the narrative because they were jarring. It’s hard work to make the Omniscient POV work, and there are really only a few writers who do it successfully.
What does one do when all the world assumes that one is a villain, hence the true villains move unnoticed? Time and again, Lorrek is challenged to prove his innocence, while at the same time, remain out of reach from those who want to control him, in order to stop the plans of those who would work dastardly deeds.
It's an exciting book that had my imagination firing on all cylinders the whole time! The characters all had heart, and made you care for them. I loved the way she handled the concept of magic in this world of hers, and how she meshes sci-fi cyberpunk with fantasy and it fits without feeling awkward. It was beautiful, funny, thrilling, and definitely an adventure not to be missed!
Let me begin this review by saying that while some elements of this are similar to others you may have read, this book is literally a one of a kind adventure for the avid reader. The author blends worlds of magic with that of greatly advanced scientific technology, and yet these worlds blend without colliding. It is a very well put together and thought out world and universe. I was greatly pleased by the diversity of characters and the grace with each was given life. Each character is utterly unique in the most wonderful of ways. When I felt that I had finally figured out each main character’s motives, I was taught a lesson in humility and simply had to keep reading to see where I had guessed wrong. Though the story is seen from multiple character points of view it flows without catching one off guard or causing the reader to stop and reorient themselves with the new mind set. The story flows from one person to the next as they each tell their individual piece of the tale being told. Yet without the input of these characters the story could not be properly told. I would recommend this book to fantasy and sci-fi lovers alike. There is something for everyone in this book. Each chapter is a new puzzle piece. Each page a new adventure. And even when the last page has been read and you think you have come to the end, there is so much more you wish to know. I thoroughly look forward to next book in the Chronicles of Lorrek, and so should you.
I went into ‘Someday I’ll Be Redeemed’ with the vaguest knowledge that there would be fantasy and science fiction. I was a little wary, I’ve read and watched things with a mix-match and hadn’t been impressed. My standards have since skyrocketed. Kelly Blanchard managed to do what not much else has accomplished: she’s taken fantasy and science fiction and put them together and she’s done it uniquely.
The pace of this book was fast. From the second Lorrek sets foot onto Nirrorm’s icy ground, to the end, where he is within King Roskelem’s clutches in Serhon. Usually I’m not one for flashbacks, but the ones in SIBR are tasteful and really flesh out the things hinted about throughout the rest of the story.
In the beginning you are left asking many questions, and you get answers—but not to everything. Many things are still swathed in secrecy and half-truths. As this is only the beginning of a series, I’m content with that.
Kelly has also managed to make an amazing cast of real, likeable, hateable, breathing characters that might as well jump off the page. From Lorrek, to Theran, to Heldon, and Honroth. Even Atheta, who you only hear about at first and meet much later, is a real character who you empathize with and get attached to. (By far, she was my favorite.)
If you’re looking for a fantasy or a scifi book, I recommend ‘Someday I’ll Be Redeemed’. It has the best of both worlds.
Although I found the beginning of the story a little slow going I found the ending a little faster paced. I found the story line different from anything I've read before, and it did keep me reading. The book is a little on the long side so it took me a little while to finish it, but I'm really glad I stuck with it. The kingdoms all vary from one to the next with some allowing magic to some that don't, and then some advanced technology while the other is a more fitting scene for the medieval theme of this book. I loved that aspect very much. There were quite a few characters introduced to the reader in this book, but I feel like they were all well thought out and their interactions were played our very well. Our MC Lorrek is a sorcerer Prince who has disappeared for 10 years and is now back trying to fix some wrongs that he was involved in helping create. At the end it gets super complicated, and now I need to read the next book to see what happens next with Lorrek and the rest of the cast of characters. I would recommend this book.
We get introduced immediately to the current conflict and the world the story takes place in. Through a series of chapters highlighting different characters in different locales, we also come to learn there is a great deal of back story to how the various situations came to be. When the book reaches an appropriate part to do so we enter an extended flashback through the memories of the main character Lorrek. This shows all the characters we have grown familiar with but in younger days and where the seeds are laid that lead to the situation in the present day.
With a lot of ground to cover and many characters, it would have been easy for the author to focus on developing only a few of them fully but that isn't the case at all. Everyone has a story and a unique personality. The odds are that as a reader you'll find at least one character you can identify with.
A fantasy novel that offers a blend of magic and technology, Someday I'll Be Redeemed is a fantastic first book in the Chronicles of Lorrek series and highly worth a read by anyone who enjoys fantasy and might be looking for something new.
This is an involved fantasy with a lot of subplots and twists. I really enjoyed it and look forward to more. Most of all I want to know what happens to Lorrek.
This was a good insight to the characters and what was at stake. Kelly is descriptive and knows how to bring this adventure alive. I will read more of her work
I enjoy books (and series) that twist and turn and take unexpected detours along the way, making the journey end up somewhere entirely new. Kelly Blanchard’s Chronicles of Lorrek is a series that does just that, and Someday I’ll Be Redeemed, the first book, wastes no time in throwing you into the deep end.
1. Thoughts on the plot This book follows Lorrek, sorcerer prince of Cuskelom, as he reappears after ten years of absence following a creature attacking his home and sending him into a void. The only thing is that none of his family know he’s back, and he’s going to keep it that way until certain schemes can be set into motion that will fix the mistakes he made all those years ago. The plot, while seemingly relatively straightforward from the very (very) brief synopsis I’ve given, is not at all that simple. Lorrek’s life intertwines with those of his brothers, Theran, Heldon and Honroth, as well as the assassin Vixen, the mysterious sorceress Fawn, and many others. One action set into motion in one part of this land of science-fantasy is enough to ripple outwards into unknowable dimensions. The plot is twisty, yet easy to follow, and absolutely does not end up where one would expect. Very well thought out.
2. Thoughts on the characters These characters are…very complicated to get to know. Lorrek is the main character and there are still facets of his personality and story that I feel I haven’t fully examined, and I’ve read the books before. That being said, I absolutely love the characters. They are well thought out, have enough depth to drown in (a good thing, I promise), and interact with their world in fascinating ways. I love all the different perspectives and enjoy the way their lives twine together. Except Roskelem, but everyone hates him.
3. Favourite part The sneaky nature of the author who lets certain things creep up on you in the plot and then, suddenly, they become really important and you’re left wondering how in the world that could possibly happen. It’s pretty fantastic.
4. Critique *Cough*Roskelem*Cough* No, but really, my only real critique for this book, and the others in the series, is that it takes me a minute to get into the style of the story. This book is told from third person omniscient perspective, and it is not one I encounter often. However, after the first couple of chapters, the prose starts to flow quite well and I start to enjoy the style, because it means I get to know what characters are thinking before everyone else knows what they’re thinking. This is also the style that lends itself to accidentally throwing the book against the wall, because if the characters would just talk to each other, then there would be less drama. Okay, not really. There is no chance of less drama, and I love it.
Overall, Someday I’ll Be Redeemed is a great start to this epic science-fantasy series, and I am thrilled to be rereading the series!
I know reviews are only destined to the books, but I have (first) to say a few words about Kelly. I do not know her in person, i´ve only seen the work she does inside the writers community. So considering this clear, I have to say Kelly Blanchard is a gift to the world. She not only writes, but helps other writers with any question and advices.
I decided to take “Someday I’ll be Redeemed” in my literature class and I do not regret it. Not only my students loved it, but one of them get inspired to write his own book.
And now… Let’s talk about this INCREDIBLE story. Im going to try not to make this review like a spoiler.
Someday I’ll be Redeemed is perfectly written, since page one you engage in the story like you know the characters but at the same time they surprise you; this story is NOT predictable and that is something I like in a book, that the author surprises me.
The way the author describes the characters is also amazing, because she does it in a way you as a reader don’t get tired of the same descriptions and she let you things so you can play with your imagination.
Other thing that is really important for me is this: THE NAMES!!! I have no idea how she came up with all those fantastics names but definitely you wont get bored with the character’s names and the different kingdoms, “Lorrek” is one of the “normal” ones and Im totally in love with him (I do not mention my favorites names because Im really trying so hard not to make spoilers).
On the other hand…. “Mordora” is one of my favorites name in the book…. Now that I mention Mordora let me tell you I really liked the way this author presented the relationship between Lorrek and Mordora, the way they talk to eachother made me wondered about what happened to them before getting deeper in the story.
I am a very poetic person, and this book is not poetry but the way Kelly describes every scenario let me picture it so clear and vivid as if it were real. Some sentences (and maybe is because I am a very poetic person) made me felt INSIDE the book… For example “Morning broke upon the horizon, and sunlight spilled through the strees”
And maybe the best part of this author is that you can suscribe to her newsletter and she sends stories behind the scenes that are so good!
If you haven’t read The Cronicles of Lorrek, you have to start reading it now. Your wont regret it, you wont forget it. Trust me!
Someday I'll Be Redeemed is a sweeping epic fantasy with a slight edge of technology, that drew me in from the first word and kept me captured to the last. When we hear of Prince Lorrek, all we know is that he is missing presumed dead and has been accused of some horrendous crimes. One of the few people to believe him still alive is Theran his older brother, but Theran has issues of his own and his search goes poorly not least due to his fondness for getting himself blind drunk.
In fact, one of the things that I really enjoyed about this novel is that there are no perfect characters, all of them are broken, breaking or struggling to live up to something they are not in one way or another. There are a lot of strong characters here, but none who shine forth as this 'perfect' example of humanity when we all know that no such thing exists. Whether it is grief, their own self-destructive behaviour, or assumptions that have been made about them, all of the characters are on some kind of personal journey that brings additional depth to the overarching narrative.
The world building is excellent, with science and magic converging only to spill apart from one another, and when the two are pitted together war seems inevitable between kingdoms. The only thing I wasn't so keen on was the structure of the tale, with half being in the present and half being in the past. There was a focus on Lorrek's presumed guilt to begin with, but because of the way the novel is structured there is no doubt at all by the end as to what occurred. So I think this would have worked slightly better as either one straight narrative line, or as a more obscured take with snatches of memory from various characters which would leave doubts about reliability.
But even with that, this is an excellent fantasy novel that I thoroughly enjoyed. Having bought the box set, it almost goes without saying that I'll be moving on to the next in the series without delay.
Someday I'll be Redeemed is the first book of Kelly Blanchard's Chronicles of Lorrek series, and it is a book that lives up to every bit of its hype. The book was recommended to me by a friend and she was so insistent about how good it was that I bought both the Kindle edition and the paperback.
The book is masterfully crafted and creates in the reader the desire to know more about what happens next. The world is vast and the characters many and each are interesting in their own way. Some are likeable, some are detestable, but each will leave an imprint in your mind. The titular character Lorrek caught my imagination as no one else except perhaps Vixen, the former assassin. Though all the other characters are interesting, I found these two the most memorable. The world that Kelly creates is vast and complex where technology co-exists with magic and the different Kingdoms each with their own problems and dynamics are brought out well. Magic is the key in this world, but technology has its own place.
I'm not going into the plot in deep because I don't want to spoil anything, but there are a few things that are given away in the blurb itself. The book opens with Prince Lorrek whom everyone had believed dead appearing back and the rest of the book is a mix of his journey to right the wrongs of the past and his memories and it all ends in a cliffhanger that has the reader salivating for more. The narrative is from various points of view, but as a fan of this form of writing, I enjoyed it a lot. Each voice is distinctive and interesting.
Pick up this book. You will be entertained, and intrigued.
I'll readily admit that I'm not as familiar with high fantasy as some others, so I don't know how frequently the genre is married with others, but I'm engrossed by the way Kelly Blanchard has married high fantasy with science fiction in her novel Someday I'll Be Redeemed, the first installment in the Chronicles of Lorrek.
The sci-fi angle isn't immediately apparent -- much of the open is establishing the typical fantasy trappings: kingdoms occasionally at odds with each other, royalty and its relatives in various stages of trouble, magic, etc. But as Blanchard slowly introduces the sci-fi elements, she changes not only the world these characters inhabit, but the characters themselves.
The changes are subtle, easy to miss at first, but just past the midway point, the tenor of the book changes -- and without spoiling anything, the shift -- while jarring -- sucks in the reader. The pages really fly by at that point, and watching all the chess pieces move in both predictable and unexpected ways is a joy.
There are unanswered questions, but considering there are eight books to follow in the series, that's to be expected. A small amount of patience is in order for just that reason, but the way Blanchard marries two genres together -- to say nothing of the multi-layered protagonist at the heart of it all in Lorrek -- makes me confident the wait will be worth it.
Someday I'll Be Redeemed lays the foundation for what promises to be a great series, and while it's neither truly high fantasy nor sci-fi, it's a fascinating blending of the two, and fans of both will find plenty to enjoy here.
I was a little conflicted about this book. On the one hand, I loved the world building and the differences between the Kingdoms, and the scifi elements. I enjoyed the badass female characters, especially Vixen, especially when we were able to see her shine, and Lorrek was a fascinating character, especially when we got to see the steps that had lead him to this point, and I will definitely be picking up the next book to find out what happens next. On the other, there were a few places where I found myself jolted out of the story by changes of pov, and I found the epilogue a little repetitive - I liked how it had the shared theme of waiting - but some information was regurgitated which derailed the impact it had. Also, for a large part of the book, it felt as though magic to some extent was a 'fix it all' with the only limitations strength (and coming up against someone stronger), that changed a bit more towards the end, and I hope to see this developed in more in the next book. Still, overall a very enjoyable read that kept me reading, devouring the book in one go.
First, if every sci-fi were as well written as this one, I'll probably read way more sci-fi!
Kelly is a very talented author. As you begin to read the story you are immerged in the conflict of the story. As you go on, you have many questions about the past and some of them get answered in the "segment" chapters.
It took me a long time to finish it, but not because it wasn't entertaining (school, work and family are meddling with my reading time). This book gets you to laugh, tears up, consider some deep thoughts. The rhythm is well chosen, some moments are a little slower than I would like, but otherwise, it is great! I had an amazing time reading the book and I know for sure that once my TBR is a little lower, I'll read the rest of the series!
ONE EXPLOSIVE TALE!!! Wow! This is one tantalizing, exciting, action packed, hard hitting, nailbiting, page turning adventures I've read in a while. All the twists and turns, ups and downs, unexpected surprises and the tribulations the characters go through. You have all the drama, deceit, betrayal and suspense riding high as tensions soar. The characters are complex, believable and so realistic their personalities balance out with traits that play off one another perfectly. The scenes are graphic and detailed it really pulls this little treasure together beautifully. Kelly did an excellent job bringing this read to life flawlessly. Great job Kelly, thanks for sharing this awesome read with us.
Not gonna lie, when a friend of mine told me to read this book I was skeptical because of the title. I thought it was either going to be Christian fiction book or a romance novel. Neither of which interest me. In the end I caved, bought the ebook on sale and waited 8 months before deciding I should probably read it. My only regret with reading the book is that it took me so long to actually get around to reading it. It was an exciting epic tale filled with magic and technology. There were so many interesting characters with Lorrek and Mordora being my favorites. I can't wait to read the second book!
"Blanchard employs what she calls “cinematographic writing;” this style creates many memorable and powerful moments in her novel. This style is one that attempts to create scenes in a cinematic way, so that the reader can clearly see the action of the story and is left with those visual impressions long after they close the book, much in the same way that a cinematographer would manipulate a scene in a movie for ultimate impact." -Suzanne
4.5 stars!! So yeah I really like this book 4.5 stars just because some of the writing needs a little work but I love the fantasy I love lorrek and love the bad ass females in this book. You can tell the author is a female because they are just as good if not better than the males not to mention one of the bad guys is a nasty ass female which I love. I hate when its always some big macho man... You should read this for sure
Kelly shows an immense attention to detail in this Fantasy and SciFi mix. With numerous characters, interesting backgrounds, unique abilities and magic systems. Lots of scheming, tragedy and (reader) frustrations. This is similar to a book that George RR Martin and Brent Weeks would write together, but they would fall short in comparison. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series!
First off study the map to get to know where the lands are. The different lands are used frequently in reference in the book. If you can get past cp9 you'll love it. It's all confusing but it sets the scenes and it's fundamental for the books core story line .all the sounding names will make sense the further along you read . I want to know if anetha had the baby can't wait to read book to. Deep read of you willing to get invested into it.
This is boring. The main character is fundamentally unlikable. I believe this is done on purpose but since the story takes the first quarter to just get started, I do not know. The pace is slow, the characters bland, the setting is non-existent. There is nothing to grab you in this book, and nothing that holds your interest enough to overcome the tedium of reading it.
This is a book it took me three days to read because I kept having to take breaks to mull it over. It's deep and well written. Frankly it's on my re-read shelf for the future. Excellent blend of fantasy and sci fi. The descriptions are excellent and the pace well thought out.
This book is so complex! So many names and places to remember, so many events to learn about after the fact. I spent probably the first half so confused and I felt like I was missing so much, but then so much is explained near the end as a cliffhanger ending and beginning of the next will decide if any of the open plots will tie up nicely, or if they will all end in heartbreak and pain.
Good book that a select group of readers can relate to. Often not really known by those who think they know them and no matter how much they try to do the right thing there are unintended consequences that become the focus of the action.
