Yoshiki Nakamura (仲村佳樹) is a Japanese mangaka. She was born June 17. Nakamura made her manga debut with "Yume de Auyori Suteki" in the manga magazine Hana to Yume in 1993.
You wanna know exactly why this one gets a five while the previous two only got four stars.
The beginning of this omnibus made me real sad because I really do not understand how poor traumatized Kyoko's mind works and how it can go so far of a stretch as to have her think that being in love with someone is a crime deserving of being sent to hell for?? It's so so heartbreaking...somebody get this girl a therapist PLZ. I know the people around her can't just like...force her to see differently, but I wish a bit more effort was made to help her out in her delicate mental state and unhealthy habit of self-flagellation. I know daddy Lory can only do or say so much but... *sigh*
Anyways...so maybe "Guam" will be their always, amirite? ;3 Kyoko and Prince "Corn" are finally reunited and it's...probably exactly what I should've expected. Ren goes to the beach to fuck off for some alone time and then springs out of the water looking like a goddamn Abercrombie ad mermaid-looking boi (I mean I know he's literally a professional model, but still) when Kyoko just happens to have snuck off as well to daydream about mermaid princesses and it's a recipe for more hijinks involving Kyoko's actual literal belief in fairy tales as a seventeen-year-old. *sigh* I mean, despite all that waffle, I did find the whole premise charming. I can understand Ren's not ready to let her know that he and "Corn"/Kuon are the same person yet. I don't know exactly how to feel about Kyoko's childlike beliefs being indulged so hard, because on the one hand it is kinda manipulating her to an extent, but I guess it's also because Ren knows her well enough to know he can only go so far in revealing certain things to her, otherwise she would not be able to handle it. I mean, I call this series the 'slowest-of-all-slow-burns' for a reason, mkay?
But then it all culminates wonderfully into And then, I'mma just cut to the chase
Overall, the time spent together on their little date was sweet and endearing. My favorite part of the whole deal is Kyoko gradually realizing "Corn" resembles Ren a helluva lot physically but still coming up with all of the excuses as to why they can't actually be the same person. I'm glad Ren's finally made the decision to TELL HER THE TRUTH the next time he sees her, because I will not be able to stand it any longer if he doesn't. XP
EDIT: Wait shit, omg, I almost forgot to include my lament on the end of horny af punk emogoth Heel "siblings"! Ren and Kyoko came real damn close to fucking as Cain and Setsu and that is a memory I shall hold near and dear to my heart always. *sigh* Also, in-story apparently they'd only been keeping up that whole charade for a month. It felt a lot longer to me personally (tho that's probably what happens when you don't catch up with a story right smack in the middle of an arc for seven years ehehe...). Also must give much appreciation to Kyoko using Setsu as an excuse to tell off that Manaka girl from tryna get all over her mans. Just perfect. After many an instance of Ren being scary and jealous over Kyoko, it was satisfying to see how the turntables. (Also...since in-story it's gonna be revealed that Ren is actually Cain when the movie he's in comes out, how's that gonna look when the rest of the cast and crew figure out Cain and Setsu were in fact not brother and sister, hmm? Lol.)
The tail end of this omnibus included some foreshadowing regarding a new subplot involving Also stupid Shotaro showing up and...suddenly...showing compassion?? For Kyoko? Like a little, I guess??? Idk man, that's not suddenly gonna make me like him, no thanks.
Oh yeah, and uh...Chiori? She's meant to be LME #3 right?? Yeah, truth be told I'd kinda forgotten about her... Not sure I agree with the whole moralizing of her pushing through to work after having been in a serious af car accident, but that's kinda the tone of this manga, in which many volumes ago Kyoko sat in a traditional ceremonial position despite the fact that it was putting weight on her twisted ankle that was so bad she fucking collapsed in a fever-addled haze. I know...Japanese culture kinda has a degree of never giving up despite adversity in many circumstances...but I'm hoping the representation of that here might be a bit exaggerated. But maybe that's just me...
So yeah, the fact that Nakamura took a few breaks from her slow burn striptease to finally give us SOMETHING is my (admittedly kinda petty) reason for scoring this one higher than the ones before it. This actually does it for the 3-in-1 omnibus volumes I had (I think this was the most recently released actually), so moving forward all the volumes I have are singular-volume books and I'll obviously be keeping track with those specific editions on here.
2022- My favorite arc (so far) is now over. No more Heel siblings. :( How foolish can Ren be? What is he going to do when Kyoko one day realizes his deception? And how can Kyoko be so in lala-fairy land to still believe so much?! That volume was interesting and playful but also infuriating!! I love how the president is handling Kyoko in many ways.
So much happened in this volume. I think this is the conclusion of the Cain Heel arc (or at the very least with Kyoko as Setsuka, Cain's sister). I'm more than happy to say goodbye to them.
But there's so many things that happened that I can't wait to see what happens next.
Of course, Shotaro shows up towards the end. Still hate him.
I have finally caught up and started reading the Skip Beat! volumes that were on my TBR pile. My heart simply aches at all the misunderstandings and miscommunications between Mogami and Tsuruga. I would be much happier if they just confessed their love to each other at this point, but the manga-ka is still writing this series, so who knows how many more years I will be tormented by their lies of omission and the president's failed scheming.
This series remains one of my all-time favorite current manga series. It's just so cute, and I love seeing the character growth - Ren coming to terms with his past (very) slowly but surely, Kyoko growing into her own person, even Sho finding moments of humanity. But if Ren and Kyoko don't get together soon I'm going to start pulling my hair out.
34 I was super curious for Lory's reaction after the end of 33, but it didn't go where I expected and then a few panes explained off panel time passage before the truly brilliant part happened. I love how Lory presents Kyoko to herself, her life, and her growth. I've been waiting for this realization to hit for several volumes now and the pay off was worth it. Also...love Ren. Always. On to 35! ♡(> ਊ <)♡
35 What Lory did for Kyoko in 34, she did for Ren here. The fairy aspect is a little silly, but it works for comedic effect and to deliver scenes we want to see while not wholly delivering and making us want more. (ノ≧∇≦)ノ ミ ┻━┻ Still love Ren. (Sighs)
36 The story was a bit disjointed in some ways, but overall another good volume.
The first two volumes were interesting but they were also very slow, the last volume however was very good. I think one of my favorite parts about the series so far has been the Heel siblings so I'm very sad to see them go but maybe if we're lucky they will make a reappearance later on. Can't really say much else without spoiling the series, but my overall feelings about this book is the first 2 volumes were kind of slow and hard to get into were I think the 3rd volume some what made up for the slowness of the first two. I still plan on continuing with the rest of the series because it really is that good & I love watching the characters grow as people & actors.
I wonder how Kyoko’s mom is going to be involved. I remember being glad that the Heel siblings arc was over but now I wish it didn’t end! I’m worried that Kyoko and Ren won’t see each other as much. Also was Sho really worried about Kyoko and seeing/contacting her mom? I’m curious how this will play out.
