Rokuro and Benio are extraordinary exorcists fated to marry and birth the ultimate spiritual warrior—but can they get along for even one minute?
Rokuro dreams of becoming anything but an exorcist! Then mysterious Benio turns up. The pair are dubbed the “Twin Star Exorcists” and learn they are fated to marry… Can Rokuro escape both fates?
Benio and Rokuro have trained for two years to get permission to go to Tsuchimikado Island to fight the Kegare—but first they have to pass their qualification test. Will their examiner’s crush on one of them make things easier…or more difficult?
I keep hoping that Mayura is here for more than fanservice, but it's only getting worse . . . although Rokuro trying to convince himself that her boobs are marshmallows while she's possessed was pretty funny.
Don't get me wrong, I loved jumping back into this world after such a long break and I LOVED seeing my beloved Rokuro and Benio, but I had a huge issue with the recent character introduced and the pacing. First, let me get the biggest issue out of the way.
Sayo. OH MY GOSH, this character. Why did the token "small child with immense power so they have to be kept secluded from others for their own safety" ALSO have to be the "young girl with an unreasonable amount of authority falls in love with main guy, is super obnoxious about it, and also threatens to punish him if he doesn't obey her" character?! WHY?! I. FUCKING. HATE characters like her because they're generally speaking one-dimensional, are usually only there to add another body to the harem, and get away with their behavior because of their "sad, tragic backstory". Now, I will give this volume credit where credit is due: Sayo was called out for her behavior and she did apologize to Benio after being rude to her. HOWEVER. Sayo's apology is tainted by her deciding that she won't give up on Rokuro, EVEN THOUGH Benio kind of confesses to liking him.
GUYS. PLEASE STOP WRITING FEMALE CHARACTERS IN CONSTANT COMPETITION WITH EACH OTHER OVER A GUY. It's overdone, stereotypical, and really fucking offensive at this point. Hell, most of Mayura's moments in the manga were dedicated to her pining over Rokuro and being jealous of his relationship with Benio. FOR FUCK'S SAKE, is there NO OTHER WAY to write a female character?! Does she have to be interested in a guy to connect with the kiddos reading this series?! Why can't they just fucking accept that he and Benio are interested in each other and FUCKING MOVE ON?! Please, please, I'm FUCKING BEGGING YOU, please stop. I don't want this to taint the rest of the series, it's bad enough that it tainted this entire volume.
Moving on from that anger-filled rant, the other problem I had with this volume was the pacing. There are THREE BONUS STORIES in this volume, and in this mangaka's infinite wisdom he chose to have them follow up on a really serious event and effectively leave it at a cliffhanger for the next volume. ARE. YOU. SHITTING ME?! Why the fuck would you do that?! Why kill the pacing of such an important moment?! Granted, the last two bonus stories were pretty good, but three in one volume? That's egregious.
*sigh* I was really hoping this would be good, and for what it's worth the battle between Shimon and Rokuro was awesome and helped to characterize Shimon. And of course, Benio and Rokuro's interactions were great and I love them so much. But Sayo's introduction, as well as her whole character, and the pacing really killed this volume. I have no plans to drop this series as of right now, but this volume was pretty disappointing.
Ew are you serious?? This book was about an 11 year old with a crush on a 16 year old? That's so wrong! I understand she's gotta fast-track her life, but it's still wrong! I like the relationship Beni and Roku have together, growing all the time, and I love how we jumped 2 years, feels more relatable now, and no need for them to just suddenly learn their powers overnight.
The story is picking up as we start to see how the Twin Stars have matured as fighters. This volume focused more on Roku, and the cliff hanger of an ending makes me so excited for the next volume! (Which I now have to wait patiently for through my library system.) They are starting to hint that Mayura might have more power than she is aware of, and I hope that I'm reading into that correctly--I really like her and she is the type of character you root for to succeed. I'm also enjoying Sukeno's little columns at the start of each chapter that gives a little historical background in exorcists as a real career in Japanese culture, although I have to sort of force myself to stop and read them because I'm just excited to keep reading the story!
Shimon looks like Neku from The World Ends With You, kinda. And I get late-game Shaman King vibes from his wings.
Later, it appears Exorcists have Spirit Guardians, expanding a possible Shaman King influence. But this ties into Rokuro's Nine Tailed Fox Chakra form from last volume, so I guess it's more a Naruto thing?
I read these chapters on MangaPlus, which does not seem to have the bonus chapters from the actual volume. So I've read maybe 75% of the actual book, I think.

This was another really fun installment into the manga series. In this volume, we had a time skip so we are now following the story 2 years in the future, after the events of the previous volumes. It is great starting to see some of the changes that have occurred to the characters over time jump. Volume 6 ended on a really big cliffhanger so I cannot wait to read the 7th one to find out what will happen next.
Soooooo, the first three volumes in this series were awful for me (to the point that i didn’t want to continue this series). For some reason, I picked this back up the other day and I really enjoy it so far. I think I just didn’t care for the giant bouts of info dumping. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Super excited to see where this series goes. For me, I just had to get to the time skip for it to actually be enjoyable and entertaining.
Birdman is actually pretty neat but damn his sister sucks why is the preteen girl in love with our protagonist why does she need to be naked to do things why does any of this have to happen come on I was just about to compliment this book but noooo.
Now that the two are older, they feel they're ready to complete the challenge and go to the island. Rokuro is particularly eager to go, he can't wait. Benio isn't overly eager, but she's right along with him. Mayura, on the other hand, wants to be right beside them, and yet she doesn't seem to be filling an exorcist shoes correctly. It just doesn't seem right for her, and she's struggling with that.
Rokuro finally meets the person there to test him, but this turns out much differently than anyone expected. She's incredibly interested in him as a person, and then during the test she does something to him that is... unsettling.
I'm intrigued by this turn of events, and want to know what it means. I should really be catching up with this series, because I know I missed a few volumes. I think I would like it more if I had the chance to read more; I really think I could grow attached to Benio, in particular, and I like Mayura. All the characters and backstories are so well done, it's easy to grow attached.
A review copy was provided by the publisher, VIZ Media, for an honest review. Thank you so, so much!
This volume has two themes running through it. First Rokuro and Benio have been practising for the last two years and the time has come for them to be tested as to whether they are strong enough to come to the island where the great battle with the Kegare is happening. So we have lots of fighting scenes with Rokuro going first. Second, things are more lighthearted as Rokuro finds himself being chased by two very different girls which he's not too comfortable with. Meanwhile, Benio has come to enjoy wifely duties over these years and finds herself overcome with an ugly feeling every time she sees Rokuro with another female. The two twin exorcists do find themselves in an intimate situation at one point. This was fun.
