This cookbook was better than some other slow cooker books that often have recipes that call for a ton of canned pre-made items or boxed processed foods that you throw in kind of like dump and go type recipes. I did mark it down one star because it had a whole lot of roast and stew type recipes, though they all varied a little bit, I don't really need a lot of those I know how to prepare those. I was looking for different types of meat and full dinner type recipes. This cookbook is good for people looking to learn how to use their crock pot with easy recipes cooking from scratch. There was a few recipes that called for canned beans or stewed tomatoes, but that's okay. I did find a little over a dozen recipes I would like to try and liked seeing how peoplease put different ingredients together.
I looked through this book and thought to myself "yum! There's a lot of simple, easy to make recipes in here that I might actually try to make." I saw someone complained that most of the recipes are unoriginal, same thing you could easily find other places. That's exactly what I like about it. Easy stuff that I could see myself shopping for, making, and eating. I don't want unique recipes that calls for exotic ingredients, that has multitudes of steps, or that I may or may not like. The recipes here are things that feels like something I would have grown up eating, I know exactly what all the ingredients are, it's all slow cooker recipes, and best of all there lots and lots of color pictures.
Another argument against this comes from people who don't eat as much beef, pork, or chicken as this book assumes everyone does. Well, I do. And I know my husband does too. So I'm buying this book. Woo Hoo!
This is a collection of recipes from home cooks around the country. They aren't exactly skinny, especially when the portion sizes are what makes the recipe come in under 400 calories. For example, I think a serving of soup is more than 2/3 cup, especially if it's a meal.
Another thing that disappointed me was that this book has lots of carbs, which makes the portion sizes smaller if you're watching your calories. There's a surprising lack of veg. Also, five hours for sliced boneless, skinless chicken breast in the slow cooker = the driest chicken ever.
There are probably a few good recipes in here, but for the most part, this isn't a good one for the bookshelf.
Great read if you use your crockpot a lot. Each recipe contains full nutritional info, is generally family friendly, and all of them were very easy to prepare. Several even have five ingredients or less!
Worth buying if you use your slow cooker a lot. There is also an extra chapter with quick sides and salads that aren't prepared in the slow cooker, and the broccoli salad is amazing.
I didn't end up trying to make any of the recipes because they are all pretty big batches. There were a few that were 4 servings, but most were 6 or more servings, which just doesn't work for my household well. The recipes did look like they would be tasty and healthy, if you do have a bigger family or don't mind a ton of leftovers.
I can't wait to try some of these recipes. I was shocked how happy woth he dessert selection I found here. I wasn't disappointed.
