First of all, I sought to resolve a question whether Gounelle is indeed a psychologist, because my Czech book cover says so. I couldn't believe it. I have discovered, that he studied humanities at UCLA - when you check their website, you find out, that psychology does not belong in humanities! In fact, on his website (in French) he mentions, that he actually graduated from Economics in France and then vaguely mentions studies of philosophy and psychology in USA. Isn't it a bit strange, that supposedly UCLA graduate does not even mention such prestigious institution? No, Gounelle, it seems, is not a specialist on human psyche.
This book is based on shallow characters with zero personality (especially the aunt), whose sole purpose is to speak his equally deep message, that comes from lots of self help and New Age literature. If you are at least a bit versed on the topic, you will involuntarily roll your eyes at... basically every page. Concepts like morphic field by Rupert Sheldrake, which connect all living beings; what you don't like about others, is actually a part of you or every human being has a calling, that needs to be discovered, rather than constructed. These concepts, can be potentially dangerous, if you have a real existential crisis and happen take them seriously in an honest attempt to resolve your crisis. Gounelle had his own crisis, it seems - he writes about it on his website - he didn't like the business world, so he solved question of his suffering just like any other purposeless and clueless motivational speaker - by selling simple, half-baked, intellectually dishonest and instant solutions, selling pretented happiness to people. Fake it till you are rich. Basically, what people want to hear, written in an extremely accessible way.
What irritates me the most is probably flattening of unique messages and contents of world religions into one simplistic concept of seeking personal happiness.
Apropos, heart DOES NOT HAVE ANY NEURONS, for fuck sake, it only has cells, that have almost neuron-like characteristics.
Utter garbage. It doesn't deserve to be put under a label of philosophy.
