Casey is only fifteen years old when her stepfather tries to marry her to a perverted and brutal man twice her age. However, minutes before the wedding, Casey flees into the jungle where she is rescued from her pursuers by a mysterious woman who sets the terrified young girl on a path to becoming a pirate - a path full of adventure, danger, personal struggles, and self-discovery.

Struggling with her own fears and desires, Casey hovers between being an innocent teenage girl confused about love and her own sexuality, and becoming a ruthless pirate seeking revenge on those who have taken all she cherished away from her.

Casey strives to win the trust of the Twenty-One Butterflies, a group of female pirates living on Butterfly Islands, a mystic place filled with dazzling butterflies by day and swarms of moths carrying terrifying parasites by night. A disastrous trip by the Twenty-One Butterflies to a floating city in the sky known as God's Mercy, changes everything. While trapped once more in the hands of her former husband-to-be, Casey discovers that there is a traitor in their midst. From that point on, it is a race to save her new friends' lives and to escape from the man who wishes to make the young girl his wife and a slave to his twisted desires.

Butterfly Islands has the foundations for a unique and interesting fantasy novel, however it was let down by clumsy editing and numerous grammatical errors, couple this with a lot of 'telling' and little 'showing' and I came away from reading Butterfly Islands - at times -feeling annoyed and exhausted.

If you push through all the 'telling' at the start of the novel - there isn't really an interesting hook to get you excited - then you'll be rewarded with a clever storyline.

What's not to love, a young female MC - called Casey - trying to escape an arranged marriage to her future misogynistic husband, an island of debortiary suspended hundreds of feet in the air - which is lowered every few weeks in a 'cleansing' process, an island full of young female pirates which is also inhabited by parasitic moths and zombie wailers which come out at night.

Although the idea behind the novel was interesting there were points which I didn't understand. Like why do the female pirates, called the Twenty-One Butterflies, train so hard, trying to become one of the Twenty-One (in number and name), and if they become one of them, they are only there for the one year - for their twenty one years of age? I mean, do they have to be cut off at twenty one? why not stay on as a successful pirate into their twenties? I felt the author was trying too hard to be true to the numbers - he could of had some leeway here.

Also, most of the characters I couldn't care for - except perhaps Casey - but I guess others will be further developed in the other five novels.

I can appreciate the author trying to smash out six novels in six months, however why go to all this effort of creativity and pump out a roughly constructed foundation novel for which all the other novels have to anchor back to? It was good but could have been better; for that reason I am not really interested in the rest of the series.

I'll give 3 stars for the effort and idea (it could have been 4), as there is a sound idea here trying to escape the clouds of moths on Butterfly Islands.

I was sent a free copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Butterfly Island's is the first book in a new series and as I write this review (18-3-16), the author is currently attempting to write and publish 6 books in 6 months with this being the first book. I'm no writer and as anyone who has read any of my reviews will know, I'm somewhat lacking in the eloquent art of literature but I can imagine how tough it mustbe so praise goes to the author, Chris Seabranch for attempting this feat and I hope he succeeds.

Butterfly Island's is a sort of mashup of genres that incorporates elements of pirate novels, zombies (wailers in the book) and high adventure into the story and it's a mix that works surprisingly well.

I enjoy a good old pirate yarn though I prefer the type of pirates portrayed in the TV show Black Sails rather than the Pirates of the Caribbean Jack Sparrow type. The main pirate group portrayed in this book the 'Twenty-One Butterflies' are a cross between the two and are certainly unique. Without going into to much detail, they're an all female group and when they reach twenty two they stop being pirates to live more normal lives, hence why the group is called the 'Twenty-One Butterflies'. Praise goes to the author, as he's obviously done his research and along with various boat types it was nice to see terms like chain shot and grapeshot being mentioned in the book as they added an authenticity to the pirate element.

To begin with I didn't really like Casey the main character, at the start she comes across as abit to needy and naive but throughout the book she develops into a far more likeable heroine, alot of the book is her story and by the end she has turned into a good choice for the main character.

(Spoiler alert: the ending of the book coincides with Casey's metamorphosis, yes I'm using the Caterpillar to Butterfly transformation term as, hey the books called Butterfly Island's and I feel it echoes perfectly her change from needy girl into girl pirate. To me it felt like the right way to end the book as while it's the end of the girl, it's only just the start of the adventures for the pirate).

The Governor, alongside his son The Sheriff Alfred Johnson, Admiral LeFevre and Mr. Stevens are the main villains in the book and they are bad guys, from the first few pages they are introduced the author does a good job portraying them as evil and you really want to see them get the comeuppance they deserve.

The world building for Gallows Sound is of a decent standard, God's Mercy and the Butterfly Island's are both well thought out locations and the cast of characters are all well developed to, you dislike the bad guys and hope the good guys (well girls) succeed. Another pirate group, The Iron Sails are only given a small amount of page time but I found them to be interesting and hope we see more of them in future books.

A well written, well paced, enjoyable, easy to read, fun, adventure romp.

Recommended.

* I received a free copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Ever since I finished Inherited by Freedom Matthews, I’d been dying to find another good read full of pirates and sword fights and look, I found it! But besides pirates and sword-fights, this book also tells the story of a fifteen-year-old girl named Casey and how her life changes after running away from her arranged marriage with the governor’s son named Alfred. I loved how we were able to join her journey and follow her as she looked for the Twenty-One Butterflies and faced her fears and learned more about life, love, loyalty, friendship and even herself as the story went on. The author’s writing really helped me connect and visualize Casey and everything that happened around her.

Also, I loved the multiple settings we were introduced to around this story. There were different islands and cities mentioned, but my favorite was God’s Mercy. Why? Because I loved the fact that it was a new kind of setting. I mean, a floating city? I’d never heard of that one before! But, besides God Mercy, I also loved Butterfly Islands, especially the way we were able to see that besides being beautiful, it was also as deadly as our all-female crew the Twenty-One Butterflies. Why? Because the same way we were able to see its beauty by daylight with the butterflies and the beautiful rivers, by nighttime, we were able to see the deadly part as soon as the moth and the wailers came out!

Now, moving on. Through Casey’s story we get to meet many diverse and well detailed characters with interesting and intriguing backstories. I personally found Casey to be a very interesting and unique main character, and I loved the way we were able to see her grow and change throughout her wonderful journey. But besides Casey, we get to meet other very important characters like her mother, James, Andrew, Mr. Stevens, Anabelle, Dawn, Captain Blue, Wall Brown, Timothy, Blake and many other important characters. I found them all unique and very well developed throughout the story, and thankfully, I enjoyed each and one of them and the parts they played.

In the end, I found this story full of pirates, soldiers, wailers and mysteries very well crafted and executed. I totally enjoyed it more than I thought I would, and I am completely thankful for my copy. I loved Casey’s story, and after that completely unexpected ending, I cannot wait to dig into book 2 and discover what will happen between the different pirate crews and governor Johnson’s men. But most importantly, I can’t wait to see how Casey keeps growing until she finally becomes herself.

I found this book on one of the newsletters i subscribe to that alerts me of free or reduced-priced Kindle ebooks. This was offered as a free ebook and since I love pirates and struggle to find a good pirate story...especially one that involves female pirates, I figured I'd give ot a whirl.
This book definitely delivered on the female pirate aspect!
There was plenty of action and good character development.
However, the plot had a few holes in it, which I imagine was the product of the author rushing through this novel in order to start another to complete his goal of "six books in six months."
*Be wary of reading if you have a sensitivity toward mentions of sexual behavior, both consentual and non-consentual...A few of the passages dealt with rape, sexual assault and spousal assault, but not in great detail, which was a good thing. They were placed in the book as a way to get to know some of the characters and why they chose the path they were on.
The topic of sex was alluded to, but not described in play-by-play fashion, which was very refreshing. There are also passages that mention the heroine developing feelings for one of her Butterfly Sisters.

All in all, this was a wonderful escape from the murder/mystery genre I normally read. I thought the idea behind the story was fantastically creative and I will be reading the rest of series because now I am intrigued to find out what happens with Buckeye and her Butterfly Sisters as their adventure continues.

What do you get if you mix the Robin Hood, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Princess Bride, and the Goonies? You get the thrilling fictional adventure of Butterfly Islands by Chris Seabranch. Once you start reading you will be hooked as you follow young Casey Archer on this thrilling adventure that takes her from a life of misery to the swashbuckling life of piracy. Along her journey Casey finds herself all kinds of situations that change and mold her into the strong, powerful young woman by the end of this first book in the series.

The author really brings the characters in book to life with excellent descriptions of the way they look and their mannerisms. One such description is the 6 foot tall, masculine stature, broad-shouldered Wall Brown. He also makes great use of cliff-hangers like when he ends one chapter with Casey being attacked by deadly parasites. The next chapter cuts to the pirates and keeps us glued to the book to find out Casey's fate.

Some of the situations in the book might be a little to graphic for the pre-teen and younger crowd. I think that older teens, young adults, and the more mature crowd that are looking for a good adventure will love this book. I give it a 5 out of 5 stars.

I haven’t written a book review in a while and there’s a really good reason. I have been lost in another world. Immersed in the stories of pirates, quests, and magic. Taking a vacation on an island – Butterfly Island.

I started reading Butterfly Islands because it was offered free on Kindle. And I could NOT stop. As I finished one, I’d immediately download the next. Until the next thing I knew, I had read all five of the series. And now I am lost without my twenty-one butterflies.

I wouldn’t normally pick up a book about pirates. But this is so much more than that. It begins in the first book with a view point of a young girl who escapes a horrible fate. The author weaving details about a harbor city that could exist in historical times when the “new world” had just begun with back up by a foreign queen. You get a real sense of who Casey is and what her life in that world is like. You get swept up in her adventure. Each additional book in the series, follows Casey through her young life as a pirate. And each book of the series spans out a littel bit more, encompassing the fantasy world that Seabrach has created.

I seriously am having a book hang-over now and am struggling with choosing what to read next.

I would have loved it, if there weren't a few gaping holes in the plot. There is one scene where a small group of the pirates go into town to rescue someone from the jail. The heroine must go because she is the only one who knows what the sheriff looks like. OK- that works for me. What is the rescue plan? They go into town and then split up into groups looking for the sheriff. What are the others doing???? They have already admitted that they don't know what the guy looks like! When the sheriff was spotted, they also hadn't worked out a method to contact each other. So, really, why were the others there at all? The rest of the book hinges on what happens during this rescue attempt, but I was just fuming at how stupid the plot was. Surely, the author could have come up with something more cleaver.

Interesting

Butterfly Islands had a fairly good plot. It started off strong, but a few times the writing seemed incredibly rushed, although that could be in part because the author had a goal to write six books in six months. There were times when Chris bounced around between different characters POV's within the same scene, which can confuse some readers. I myself am used to characters having their own scene, not three different characters POP's within sentences of each other. While I did notice similarities, the characters did have their own personality traits. I do worry about the MC Casey, though. Her heart and emotions are all over the place. I will be sure to read the next book and see how it all goes from there.

Really loved the whimsy of the females pirates. I am certain some of those are real life Villain analogies. Wish that children were not compromised but it can be a life true reality. Thank you very much it was fun taking the ride with this story!!!

Part pirate adventure with a touch of steampunk

Casey is an upper class teen who lives in a world of fantasy like islands. One hangs above the ocean held by chains.
Her abusive stepdad decided to marry her off to the Governor's despicable depraved son to further his standing. The Governor is equally evil ruling his lands by evoking poverty and fear while gaining more power and riches. More poverty means more piracy.
Casey launches herself into a life of sisterhood loyalty, piracy, creepy things.
I really want to finish this series .

Good book

I liked the story but some elements I did not care for. It should be warned that there is talk of rape and torture along with sex with minors. I was asked to read this book in exchange for a review. This series is not for the faint of heart.
