Comic book and screenwriter Nathan Edmondson is a native of Augusta, GA. His Eisner-nominated book Who Is Jake Ellis? will soon be a major motion picture from 20th Century Fox, and The Activity film will come soon from Paramount Pictures. NPR has listed his work among the “Top 6 Comics to Draw You In” and USA Today and CNN are among those who have listed him in their Top 10 lists.
Well, the content isn't bad, but the concept is remarkably ill-advised. Imagine buying an anthology and finding that the contents were the fifth chapters of random novels by Stephen King, Georgette Heyer, Robert A. Heinlein, Jacqueline Susann, and whatever other couple of novelists come to mind, presented with little context or explanation. This isn't a graphic novel, it's the fifth issue of comic book arcs of six female hero titles, featuring Black Widow, She-Hulk, Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, Thor, and Squirrel Girl. Thor and Black Widow were both written and illustrated well and seem worth searching for the rest of the story. I mostly liked the writing on She-Hulk and Captain Marvel, but not the art. Ms. Marvel was okay, and Squirrel Girl was the best read due it being very cleverly written (in a sanitized Deadpool vein) and pleasantly self-contained, though I did not care for the art. Uh... excelsior, I guess...
Another fairly pleasant read. And a reminder - A good Black Widow tale always feels new. A good Ms. Marvel or She-Hulk tale re-reads like an old friend. All space Marvel stories aren't awful including this Captain Marvel story. And Thor and Unbeatable Squirrel Girl are almost always annoying, though a little less so in this book.
I tend to read about a lot of male superheroes so it was nice to read about female characters. Four out of six of the authors are male. All really fun to read. I had already read Squirrel Girl, Ms. Marvel, and Capt. Marvel after having played Marvel Strike Force and Marvel Champions, but I enjoyed reading She-Hulk's lawyer stories and Black Widow's spy stories.
