I am a huge Simpsons freak. This book came out last year some time and I had been eyeballing it at Barnes and Noble every since. But it was $35 and I just couldn't justify spending that much at the time. Low and behold, I went browsing in the Barnes and Noble bargain section a few days ago and what should happen to be sitting their glowing as if calling me to buy it? You guessed it! It was now only $9.99 and I had to get it.
This is a visual history of 25 years of The Simpsons. With some explanatory text and the occasional bit of trivia, it is mostly screenshots pulled from the show. What I like about it, is that they've put it together in chronological order using the flashbacks from the series and current plots. It starts from Grandpa Abe simpson as a child moving to America and goes through how Homer and Marge meet, their early life together, how Homer got on at the Nuclear Power Plant, all the way to the birth of Maggie.
This is a must have for any true Simpsons fan. Going through the history and seeing the screen shots had me reliving some of my favorite episodes. It made me want to go back and start watching the series all over again. Good thing I have every season that is currently on DVD. I give this book an easy 5 out of 5. It isn't any kind of profound reading but it will scratch that Simpsons itch in a very satisfactory way.
When The Simpsons debuted proper I was 7. I've been addicted to the show since. When I saw this book on Amazon months before release I preordered and counted the days. Man, am I disappointed. This is like a scrap book put together by an amateur. As far as a complete history - not even close.
MAYBE 10 out of 550 episodes are even covered. What you actually get is 10-20 pages of screen grabs (low resolution) retelling an episode. The episodes you can pretty much predict: how Homer and Marge met, when the kids were born, etc. They even try and jam storylines together. We all know after so many episodes some things don't make sense; but they try to do that.
If you've read any of The Library of Wisdom books you're getting the same here. You can flip through this at a book store and not waste your money. It would have been nice to see some actual text and insight. This feels like no love went into it.
A nothing book. The hardcover and peresentation of the book is the only thing that sold it to me - it seems like the content was slapped together by someone on a lazy night, because the screenshots in which the pages are littered, are just that: SCREENSHOTS. They are not remastered or redrawn in any way - just low resolution snapshots from different episodes. No character bios, no town map, no proper timeline, no original illustrations or anything that could justify naming this scrapbook "The Simpsons Family History". Basically they just took Homer's point of view and made a short summary of his life from the moment of his own birth to the birth of Maggie. Marge's childhood is completely ignored, so this is not a FAMILY history, but a Homer History. A half-assed one at that, not even worthy of a nice coffee table.
I got this book for my husband for Christmas, as we are both huge Simpsons nerds. I read the whole thing cover to cover in just a couple of hours and found myself laughing out loud and some of my favorite quotes. The book focuses on the chronological history of Homer and the Simpsons family (like a scrapbook), but what I found most interesting was how Groening incorporated the more obscure episodes from their past (90’s grunge scene). There are several flashback episodes that are presented (Lisa’s fist word, Homer’s dream job), and it all flows together seamlessly. With beautiful illustrations and a fun layout, this is a must-have for any Simpsons fan.
Big Simpsons fan here and I was looking forward to this book, but I read through it in a store and it is really a rip off. $35 for a very lazy compilation of screencaps and quotes from the series. No new material, not put together in an interesting or funny way, and the actual pictures are pretty grainy and pixellated. It's like someone took a fan's tumblr and tried to sell it in hardcover.
This is not a substantial book despite its fancy appearance. It is not filled with facts and information about our favourite four fingered family with a comprehensive history and trivia guide, it is, however, still quite nice.
There is humour and heart as the journey from the beginning of time, (skipping 67 million years to speed things up a bit) all the way up until Grandpa Simpsons early life, Homer’s birth and beyond. I thought I would be disappointed in this book because it wasn’t what I expected i.e filled with facts and information, and yet I still enjoyed flicking through as the history of the family was traced.
In that sense it does do what the cover says, it is a family history of The Simpsons, a celebration of the family. In full colour there are images taken straight from episodes, with no updating or touch ups, which, to my nostalgic self, loves that you can see the animation evolution, and also realise that through fate or design the entire lives of each family member has been explored in one episode of another allowing a chronological journey through their story. We see Homer’s birth, his early and ongoing meetings with Marge, and their love blossom until the arrival of Bart, Lisa and Maggie.
I can see how some people might think it has no value, but it a celebration of the family, never claiming to be a guide or any kind of anthology about the show. It’s a pictorial history that was actually quite enjoyable. If you are looking for wordier, and more comprehensive histories of The Simpsons or fact guides, then there is no shortage out there from ex-staff or fans alike. But as a lovely guide to this long running show that focus on the family it was quite a nice trip down memory lane.
Nice premise, but short on actual material. The book basically consists of Simpsons milestones from the beginning of the show to now. In terms of format, the book consists of screen caps from the show and identifying text, along with quotes and small expository sentences. However, there was nothing really new or even interesting here (especially compared to the older books of the '90s and early '00s). In fact, many if not all of the quotes and incidents will be familiar to fans of the show. It's a little short on actual humor, too. The book is nice for those who are just getting introduced to The Simpsons, but for the fans and those who want something a little meatier, it definitely falls short. I'm glad that I checked this out from the library before actually buying it.
I have been watching the Simpsons since I was 10 years old. My brother was 8 years old. It tickled us that we were Bart and Lisa's ages.
I thought this book was going to go through all the Simpson's characters. Kinda like a Wikipedia family tree. But sadly it fell a little flat.
Set out like a scrapbook we go through the childhood of Homer, Homer and Marge's relationship, And a lot of things HOMER. The kids don't show up in the book until over 3/4s of the way through.
I found that disappointing. Bart, Lisa, and Maggie are the main reasons I watch (and still do) the show.
As a fan I expected a little more.
Screen shots are taken from old episodes and pasted in. A lot of them are grainy. You would think they would try to make them more clear.
I did however giggle through the book and found an episode that I actually do not think I've ever seen.
Show in question: "That '90s Show" is the eleventh episode of The Simpsons' nineteenth season. It was first broadcast on January 27, 2008. Kurt Loder and "Weird Al" Yankovic both guest star as themselves, this being the second time for Yankovic.
I'll have to rewatch to see if I haven't seen it. I couldn't remember any of the screen shots.
All in all... This book is not worth the suggested $35 price tag. Maybe $5... but no more. Get it from your library like I did.
For those who wonder why I gave this book a 5 star review... It's the Simpsons and they deserve it. I just had problems with the layout.
Super cute book. Initially bought this as a gift for Peter for Valentine's Day - mainly because I saw it on sale at Barnes & Noble and thought it would look great in our family library.
We're both big fans of the Simpsons, and we love the series so if you have a book dedicated to them with lots of photos and cool text we're all up for it.
While the photos look like they're screen captures from the TV show itself, the book tells us the story of the Simpsons family - how Homer and Marge met, all the way from when they were first at camp, to high school, to getting engaged, married, and having Bart, Lisa, and Maggie.
The book also explores Homer's many jobs along the way and shows how dedicated of a husband and a father he is. It also gives a brief background on Abe Simpson, who is the son of an immigrant, I would have to say! If America's most favorite family comes from a line of immigrants then surely that will say how diverse America is and how open the country is (or was, depends on when you look and read this post).
I would say, this book gave a bit more color on Homer, and how he sacrificed a lot of things just to be with Marge and his family. The final part of the book coincides with the first episode ever of the Simpsons, on how they acquired Santa's Little Helper (their dog).
Overall, a great book that can be a great addition for any library if you are fans of the TV show.
$35 book. I'm not going to be "One of those people" claiming the Simpsons was only good or funny in the 90s. I like the Simpsons, but I'm not a regular viewer. I'll watch a new episode every now and then, but I've never watched every episode from every season. Despite my 2 score age, I never was a person raised on TV and I hadn't gotten accustomed to watching seasons until not just the advent of box set seasons, but when costs came down. (Used to be, a season of CSI would cost $60 a season, but not they're more like $15.)
The book reproduction is all over the place. Some pages are blurry, while others are rich and crisp. I'd seen many of the episodes throughout the books narrative surprisingly. Unfortunately, this wasn't the kind of book I was expecting and it's a half-ass attempt of capturing numerous screen shots from the episodes of major character origins rather than an exhaustive Springfield character compendium.
The Simpsons television show has been on for almost 30 years! Why has it endured when so many others have come and gone, crashed and burned? Everyone has their own opinion, probably including you. They may be right or wrong.
This tome is a bit of a scrapbook of the history of the Simpsons as a family (not a show.) Is is already outdated by the writer's of the television show being revisionist? Yes. Is it a shameless attempt for you to buy a book related to a popular show? Perhaps. Will you enjoy it? Eh, diehard fans will really learn nothing new; newbies will.
The book could have been better if it has a list of all the episodes cited/screen-captured; then we could have watched the episodes as history unfolds.
I'm not entirely sure what the point of this book was. I just I hoped it would be more substantial and less generic. I guess that it kind of put the earlier seasons' story lines in "order" was interesting, but this is too similar to The Simpsons' Family Album without adding much. It was especially disappointing that some of the screencaps were such terrible quality; it was just amateur hour. Maybe someday there will be a nonfiction history, like what Street Gang was for Sesame Street, but this ain't it.
This book is an entertaining read for Simpsons fans. Basically it takes a lot of the events in the show's 2.5 decade run and puts it in a chronological order. Considering the show has done countless flashback episodes over the years - some that seemed to negate others - it was nice to see exactly how events fit together.
This is a quick read - I read it in one sitting - and don't expect much that wasn't already shown in the television program. I don't know if I would pay $35 for this book (I borrowed it from the library) but definitely enjoyed this book.
If you're a fan of the Simpsons, this is definitely one to check out.
It was really cool to see the whole story laid out in chronological order, although weird seeing stuff from more recent episodes in there. The picture quality could have been a bit better and some of the quotes were slightly wrong. Other than that, I really enjoyed this. It was a fun easy read and brought back a lot of great memories of moments I have loved.
This was a lot of fun. Not perfect, but enjoyable as a fan of the series.
A well-illustrated tome that takes us back through time, chronicling how the family came to be who (and what) they are. Well, one of the ways they came to be - their story seems to change every few years. It focuses more on Homer than on Marge (perhaps that will be addressed in the next volume - if there is a next volume), and it serves more as a reminder to the loyal viewer than any attempt to bring in new viewers. But it has enough moments of Oh-yeah-I-remember-that-episode;-that-was funny to make it worthwhile.
The Simpsons Family History by: Matt Groening. I love this book .This book will tell you everything you need to know from a family of dinasours to a family of humans. You will also know why their insane son Bart Simpsons is insane . This book will tell you everything you need to know such as why Homers mom is hardly ever mentioned. It will also tell you why Homer is completely bald .Anyway, this as an amazing book it gives you to much information so I can not even sum it up.
A fun quick borrow from the library- enjoyed having a look at the Simpsons family history, especially Marge and Homer's young dating days. Very cute, but there wasn't enough content or laughs to justify the cover price unless you are a hardcore fan.
This is best checked out of a library, enjoyed and returned for the next person to enjoy.
this was a good visual history of homer and marge and how their family came to be. most of what we learned on the TV show was shown in flash back episodes or snippets here and there. this was the full story with no episode gaps. great for Simpsons fans, of any sort.
Read through pages of screen-grabs in less than two hours (maybe less).
If you ever had to take an exam on 'Simpson Family History' and did not want to watch the episodes, this book is the 'Cliffs Notes' you would be looking for.
