Dixie is a man adrift, picking away at the evildoings of the Grand Order of Defenders and the DeVine Corporation wherever he's able. But none of it is what he really wants, and what he wants is out of reach.
Then a notorious thief crosses his path, a man with abilities that might make all the difference. With his help, Dixie can at long last return to face the people that destroyed his whole world and return that destruction tenfold.
Megan is a long time resident of queer romance and keeps herself busy reading and writing it. She is often accused of fluff and nonsense. When she’s not involved in writing, she likes to cook, harass her wife and cats, or watch movies. She loves to hear from readers and can be found all over the internet.
2.5 Megan Derr is a master of writing short stories where you at the end like her to revisit the world but where the story at hand is satisfyingly complete. This is not such a story. The tale is too big for a short story format. Pity, because it seems like a world I really like to read about; a world where an unregulated organization of super heroes dominates the public discussion and obviously is rooted deep into big industry, where they can declare everyone an enemy or super villain and blame their own transgressions onto them, a world with super talents, cyborgs, genetic human experiments and even some aliens. So if you press such a world and the battle of some of those so called villains against the system with added romances into a short story format something has to give, even if it's a series of short stories.
Different to the first book of the series I'm also not completely convinced about the romance between Dixie and Greg and the incessant comparison of Greg with a a kitten became old really quick. There surely is more to say about this story but for a short story a short review has to do.
Quite a fun sequel for this series. Which changed a lot from the early version of this story in much earlier Ms. Derr's book.
The story begins quite like in the earlier version. With additional middle part and change of Byron and Minder.
The change of techs over the years must have effected how Dixie got upgrade as a character as well,
The early version stopped just as Dixie start working to infiltrate the network and here we got the conclusion. The scenes with Dixie working to hack and destroy the system very cool, sci-fi style. Quite nowadays sci-fi style too I think.
There are four more books to come. And after the next book, it will most likely be the story we haven't read yet. I can't wait.
Still loving this series! The heist part was great but the romance took a backseat in this one and lacked a bit of sizzle so I knocked off half a star. I wish there was a bit more focus on Greg and Dixie like there was on Karl and Trick in the first book. I did love the expansion on the worldbuilding. There's more on how people got powers and why the Order was established. Just what exactly Dixie can do was finally revealed and it wasn't what I was expecting. The big takedown in the end was awesome but I felt like the ending was a bit abrupt. Overall tho, this is a solid installment in the series and I can't wait to read the next book. I hope it's gonna be Byron's story.
There are more information about the group of anti-heroes and the G.O.D. but I actually like the first story better. Maybe because I still cannot fully fathom how Dixie's ability works (a.k.a Turncoat), with him being a super computer and all. Also still a bit confused about Greg's superpower.. is he a real cat (meaning he can turn into cat) or does he just able to walk through walls???
I wasn't sure I'd like this one, but enjoyed it more than the first book. I really like the worldbuilding that got richer in this book. Dixie reminds me of every grizzled cowboy I ever met, which makes Greg's nickname for him even better.
This is so much fun! I got a huge kick out of the fact that Greg was The Cat Who Walks Through Walls. Kind of disappointing to see that the next installment never materialized, though.
Read it through one sitting. Love. Love Love it!!!!!!!! I didn't read the original but it still works amazingly well or me. Pure Megan Derr awesomeness.
I love a good superhero"villain" book, and this second installment in the Anti-Heroes was jam packed with supers of all sorts! It did miss a little of the charm of book 1 - maybe it was that the relationship was between supers and not a 'normie' so we lost that element of unknown?
Either way, I did still enjoy Dixie and Greg, and I plan to jump into Close Enough to Touch soon because we got quite the teasers for the next pairing!
A clumsy cat, a living computer and fairy prince. What could go wrong? Everything wrong and everything right. I've waited for a while to read this story and it was worth every minute of waiting! I didn't think I would love this version since I've read the short story but this version was even better! Way to go Dixie for messing the G.O.D up so good and for finally getting your cat. After all they say a cat chooses who to love not the other way around!! Another Megan Derr masterpiece!
After reading this book, I’m mad at myself for taking so long after reading the first book. I plan to rectify that and read book 3 immediately as it looks like these books follow a pattern that reminded me a lot of the Matrix at the end with Dixie’s abilities.
I loved the first book but this one was unfortunately disappointing :( It felt like there was a chunk of it missing in the middle and at the end so the romance was really poorly done.
Continuing in the fight against the G.O.D, the Anti-Heroes are back and better than ever! Dixon, aka Turncoat, has been on the run from the G.O.D for years but a chance encounter with another super by the name of Whisker has brought him back to their attention and he’s forced to flee or risk capture. Hiding out has never been easy for Dixie but the sexy distraction he finds in his new acquaintance is a welcome respite, but only once; Dixon doesn’t do repeats, no matter how much the other man tempts him to. When the reason for Whisker’s manhunt is discovered, however, a much bigger problem is revealed and it will take more than just Dixie’s ingenuity to fix it…it may take his life.
Anyone that read my review of the first book in this series, Trick of the Light, should know how much I enjoyed the first book and as a result, how excited I was to read the sequel. I can happily say that I was not disappointed! In this installment we get to learn more about Turncoat, actual name Dixon, who was introduced in the first book with enough of a teaser as to his history to make me really interested in learning more. I can honestly say that anything I imagined about him paled in comparison to the reality of what was done to him and what he can do.
Aside from the beginning and the end, there wasn’t as much action in this one as the story focused more on character building and information gathering that will have a major impact on the next book. Dixie was endlessly fascinating to me, however, and this story really allowed him and his abilities to shine. The other characters featured were all interesting in their own ways, (especially Byron because hot damn, I did not see that man coming!) and while they were never really the focus of the book, they all managed to add to it perfectly. The pacing was great and I was still pulled into the story even without all of the set up that sucked me in with the first book. Also, unlike the first book, there was less sex in this one which allowed for the great story and character set up that I enjoyed so much.
I wouldn’t recommend reading this book without having read the previous one as the initial world building is essential in getting the most enjoyment as you continue with the series. If you like the idea of the villains being the real heroes like I do, however, you certainly won’t be disappointed in this series; its amazingly creative and entertaining and I’m just left with the desire for more! While this one was a little slower paced than the first one, it was still a great read and the set up for the third book was phenomenal; I’m even more excited for that installment than I was to read this one!
This time we're following Turncoat from the first book. With Matt only recently healed and 'Countdown' being such a freshly minted villain, the two are off for some time laying low. Dixie is alone and happens to run across another super....who burns his identity. Not an auspicious start, but the two make for a very fascinating relationship.
This book really looks into having a relationship when life is so uncertain. After all, not only is Turncoat one of the most wanted villains for what he can do, but the G.O.D. want him back alive and shacled to run their systems. He'd never go back, rather be dead, but he will die burning down their systems if that's the only way to do it. As far as he sees bringing another person into that is just cruel because he is setting them up for heartbreak. But really, if he doesn't have people around, what does he keep going on for? It's something Dixie really has to work through and it was done very well.
I love the continued mythology of the world. We learn more about the meteorite, the history of what has happened since, and some of the ramifications for the world. It puts an interesting spin on things, almost lining them up with our history just with subtle differences. It also really puts into view how the world is for them now and what they are fighting for.
This was a great continuation of the Anti-Heroes (and I love that they called themselves that!) and I can't wait for when the next book comes out!
Pull quotes/notes 'Fox in the henhouse,' Dixie said, dropping his soft drawl and reciting the phrase in a perfect, mid-East American accent." (8) where that
Simply put: Lol ^^ A bit longer: If you happen to remember the original - just forget it, hang on for the ride and enjoy it ;) or else you might be writing a lol-review ^^ It's good and everything but I miss the typical romance between the MC's ao that's a pity because it would make everything really awesome :) Well, let's hope for the next part ^^
It might just be my contrary nature, but I actually prefer to see the "Villains'" POV when it comes to superhero-y kind of stuff. Definitely looking forward to any more that may follow in this series.
Gawd, what I wouldn't give to have had half a dozen eps of Smallville from Lex's point of view, ya know?
This is a terrific series. I love the reversal of the good/bad tropes and the fresh treatment of the super-hero genre (in general, it's very, very rare in MM). Very original, and interesting characters and motivation. Good pacing, and sufficient tension and threats in the plot to keep you from getting bored (unlike a lot of mm that I read these days). Also, unexpectedly, pretty funny in parts.
This was another quick enjoyable addition to the series. I loved Dixie and the way he was a bit awkward with people, he tried but when he opened his mouth at times he said the wrong things. I also enjoyed the way he took G.O.D on at the end.
