The Robotech Defenders Thought The War Was Behind Them!
A war without victors, that had brought two races to the brink of extinction. A war without spoils, save for the devastated Earth itself...
A new-age ark, the Super Dimensional Fortress had returned to its ravaged homeworld, and those who had lived through Armageddon began the painstaking process of reconstruction. But they had the Zentraedi to help them, former enemies who shared a common goal -- survival!
But all was not well in this bravest of worlds....Unaccustomed to a life without warfare, many of the alien giants were reverting to their old ways. Now one had appeared who vowed to lead them back to their former glory -- Khyron! -- an alien culture's hero reborn to pick up where Dolza had left off!
The final challenge between the SDF-1 against the one million ships' armada of Supreme Commander Dolza was an unexpected success for the brave soldiers of the Robotech Defense Force aboard of the Super Dimensional Fortress One.
The SDF-1 was supported by the battlewagon of Commander Breetai along with some few Zentraedi ships which deserted to the RDF's side, but they were against one millions enemy vessels.
The outnumbered RDF found a key victory element from someone who wasn't even an enlisted soldier...
...and this unexpected factor provoked a huge confusion between Dolza's legions.
And the SDF-1 showed a surprising inner resource at the precise moment defeating Dolza's armada.
However...
...the Earth wouldn't be the same anymore.
The violent shots by massive battlewagons during the war in near space from Earth, along with the ultimate SDF-1 resource, resulted in a global devastation around the world leaving too little remnants of human civilization.
Now, the SDF-1 crew along with the civilians of Macross City (which was inside of the massive fortress), and also the surviving deserters from the Zentraedi race, were now heirs of Earth and responsibles for rebuilding the planet.
PEACE ISN'T EVERLASTING
Two years after the final confrontation between Dolza's armada and the SDF-1, there are still too many threats for the new Earth civilization...
Khyron and Azonia whom survived the final space battle and they were hiding in the Amazons waiting for the right time to strike the SDF-1 and getting the Protoculture Matrix.
Some of the Zentraedi deserters, now living in new Earth towns, are starting to feel again their programmed warrior impulses in their DNA and they want to battle again.
There is still a Robotech Factory in deep space under control of Zentraedi soldiers loyal to the now deceased Dolza.
Breetai and Exedore exposed to Captain Gloval and his staff about the Zentraedi's makers, the mysterious Robotech Masters, and it's clear that they are a menace to Earth.
The SDF-1 won't be able to fly again, New Macross City is built around the remnants of the fallen fortress, and the construction of the SDF-2 began using the previous fortress as skeleton for the new massive vessel, with a crucial goal...
...to go into space and negotiating a vital peace truce with the Robotech Masters.
LOVE WASN'T MADE TO WORK FOR THREE
Lisa Hayes loves Rick Hunter.
Rick Hunter believes that he is in love with Lynn Minmei.
Lynn Minmei doesn't know what she wants.
Yep, a formula for sentimental disaster.
But, a love story such epic that it's without question the vertical column of the whole First Robotech War.
And these three characters will have to sort out their own personal feelings since they will become crucial, once again, in the saga known as...
The final book of the first generation of Robotech, more commonly known as "The Macross Saga".
Fair warning- I'm writing (and rating) this with rose-tinted glasses, as I this is one of the hallmarks of my childhood! I reserve the right to change the ratings up or down if/when I re-read these books!
AS I recall, these books were quite good, though not as viscerally impactful as the cartoon series of the same name. The advantage to these novelizations is that they can capitalize on things glossed over in the show (IIRC, the inital exploration of the SDF-1 is pretty well documented in the books, where it's given merely a line or two in the show.)
It also allows you to delve deeper into the characters minds, and does a pretty good job of fleshing out all the characers to a greater degree. (In particular, the Rick/Lisa/Minmei arc is given greater depth and regard than in the show.)
While not particularly deep, it's not particularly shallow either, as there are a few adult themes (Death, Loyalty, Honor, etc.) that make their way into the story as it progresses.
this series is exciting and well-worth reading, espcially if you remember the show (or the 80's!) fondly, or are just looking for a fast-paced sci-fi read.
Episodes 29-36. Finishes the Macross saga. Shows more of how the zentradai failed to integrate and the xenophobia of the humans would play out more than the show showed and will play later for Masters Saga
It really all does boil down to a soap opera of whether Rick and Lisa will get together or Rick and Minmei. Honestly reading this again many years later I have NO idea what Lisa sees in Rick. Besides the floppy fringe he really has nothing going for him. But I still love the story. It's a bit of a shame the way the other characters, particularly Max and Miriya disappear from the story. And the ending was terribly sad. But I'm really glad I went back and re-read all the Macross books. Having recently rewatched Masters and New Generation I'm not sure I want to read the novels, but I would like to have another go at the Sentinels.
Great series of books for kids that enjoy or are interested in science fiction. I read these books in middle school (I'm now in my 30s) and loved each one. The stories are fun, engaging and relatively fast paced. I'd be tempted to reread them now just for old time's sake if I didn't have so many new books on my to-read list.
I knocked it down a peg because, in retrospect, there are some aspects that are a bit too cheesy. I'm sure when my kids are old enough, they'll get thier own copies.
