To accompany the major BBC Two series, Rick Stein's Long Weekends is a mouthwatering collection of over 100 recipes from ten European cities. Rick's recipes are designed to cater for all your weekend meals. For a quick Friday night supper Icelandic breaded lamb chops will do the trick, and Huevos a la Flamenca makes a tasty Saturday brunch. Viennese Tafelspitz is perfect for Sunday lunch, and of course no weekend would be complete without Portuguese custard tarts or Berliner Doughnuts for an afternoon treat.
Accompanied by beautiful photography of the food and locations, and complemented by his personal memories and travel tips for each city, Rick will inspire you to re-create the magic of a long weekend in your own home.

Hey Rick, where're going this weekend!! Keen for the second half of the very entertaining tv series to return because we thoroughly enjoyed the first six weekends and were happy when the pre ordered accompanying book arrived. It's full of fabulous stories, details of the long weekends away and of course excellent recipes....have almost all his books and we love the various tv series over the years. Lovely big coffee table book.
This is really a travel memoir, just one packed with delicious recipes. I love Rick Stein - he’s such a Romantic. Many of the long weekends we enjoyed while living abroad were inspired by Rick’s “Long Weekends” series on BBC, and we’re both forever grateful.
I recommend this book to everyone who enjoyed the BBC TV series. Rick's advice on the cities visited is worth listening to , the photographs are fab and the recipes get the taste buds dribbling. Rick Stein has been a constant on our TV for many years his books are a bonus , and give us an opportunity to try some of his dishes.
Having thoroughly enjoyed the TV show (and made a trip to Berlin based around Rick's recommendations!) this is an excellent companion to the series, with extra stories and details from Rick's trips, with hotels, restaurants and suggestions for things to do listed in the back. The recipes all look amazing and not complicated. I have already made one of the pasta dishes and will be trying more!
For me, as a huge fan of Rick Stein’s ‘Long Weekends’ show & because of his down to earth personality & love of simple foods - this book is a winner!
The book is a great accompaniment to the TV show. Recipes are based on region; hotels & ‘what to do’ when visiting are listed at the back. Total food travel porn :)
And, what I love is that Rick’s voice & commentary make it feel like he’s talking to you while reading the book :)
A gorgeous read while drinking wine & binge-watching the TV shows (because duh) ... make sure you make some snacks while you’re at it :)
This book is NOT for absolute beginners- you need to know your way around a kitchen to pull these recipes off (custard filled filo pastries, pork & clams, & some gorgeous pasta dishes) - some recipes may have hard to find ingredients (Icelandic langoustine soup???) but experienced cooks can work around this. (I’d keep the seasoning & make the Icelandic soup more of a seafood chowder; based on available ingredients.)
Rick Stein is not a fussy cuisine nouveau chef, he’s a meat & potatoes (or seafood & wine;) guy. By his own admission he is NOT a pastry chef, so desserts are simple & straightforward.
The photos are beautiful & you feel like you’re traveling while reading it :) The index is very well organized- foods are listed by country/episode as well as name & key ingredient so you can look up a recipe for ‘that really good clam dish’ from Portugal without knowing what it’s actually called :D
Plus** THERE IS A RECIPE FOR PORTUGUESE CUSTARD TARTS!!! (He couldn’t get the recipe while filming in Lisbon lol )
I love Rick Stein’s cookbooks. His recipes and ideas all work and he writes as he talks on his tv programmes so you feel as if you are sharing his experiences. This is another added to my collection and every bit as good as the others.
Loved the series but hated the cookbook, surprisingly. Organised by category rather than country... which wasn't very interesting, made it hard to find things and lacked any sort of relationship to the series.
