Clean and Wholesome
Paranormal Cozy Mystery Romance (with a cute pet skunk!)
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Angie Fox writes sweet, fun, action-packed mysteries. Her characters are clever and fearless, but in real life, Angie is afraid of basements, bees, and going up stairs when it is dark behind her. Let’s face it. Angie wouldn’t last five minutes in one of her books.
Angie is best known for her SOUTHERN SPIRITS™ mysteries, and for her ACCIDENTAL DEMON SLAYER books.
This Verity Long novelette is set as the holidays approach. Ghost of a Chance nicely straddles that line between fun fluff and too-silly-to-care, easily managing to keep both feet firmly planted on the delicious treat side while sprinkling a bit of festive warmth on the confection. Unlike most readers, I hadn’t yet read any full-length entries in the Southern Ghost Hunter mystery series, but had no trouble getting a feel for its tone from this shorter story. I didn’t run across anything that seemed like a spoiler to the other entries, nor did I find anything that made me roll my eyes, as this genre all-too-often has a tendency to do. This is fluff done right.
Verity is making sugar cookies with deceased gangster Frankie hanging around when a Union soldier — deceased, of course — named Matthew shows up on her doorstep in need of help. He wants to marry but needs a necklace to present to his bride-to-be that only Verity can get for him, because he was forbidden to enter his old home when he joined the Union Army. Since she’ll need to use Frankie’s power to go there and see the dead, which saps Frankie, she has to use Southern Belles as an enticement. As good fortune would have it, Verity’s friend Lauralee is catering so there is some fun stuff going on as she mingles with the corporeal and the non-corporeal.
It doesn’t take long for Verity to realize mending a family relationship is just as important as obtaining that necklace for Matthew. Ghost of a Chance has just the right dash of fun — Frankie’s urn gets used as a serving tray ornament — and enough warmth and holiday spirit — no pun intended — to make this a short and enjoyable read. It’s fluff, but fluff with enough warmth and whimsy that you don’t feel too ridiculous for having read and enjoyed it. A nice treat.
This was a fun short listen! When I finished listening to the previous installment in the Southern Ghost Hunter Mystery series, I had about another hour of time to fill so I decided to dive right into this short story. I feel like this story would work well on its own without having read any of the other books in the series.
Verity and Frankie go to work at a party in order to help a ghost we met in the previous installment retrieve an item that he needs. Verity is working a party serving food but there is a ghostly funeral occurring in the same space. Nothing seems to go as planned. I couldn’t wait to see how Verity would be able to do achieve her goals. Tavia Gilbert’s performance was wonderful and added to the overall experience.
I would recommend this story to others! I think that this was a very entertaining story which would be an ideal way for readers to give the series a try. I definitely plan to read more of this series just as soon as I can.
Initial Thoughts This was a fun short listen. It was fun to go along with Verity as she worked on a problem for a character that we met in the last installment. Tavia Gilbert did a fantastic job with the narration.
Ghost of a Chance by Angie Fox Narrated by Tavia Gilbert This is a fun short story about ghosts and love through time! Sweet and heartwarming. Humor sprinkled in for an even better book!
This was cute and I liked it. Who knew ghosts could get married?
But I hate the way there's always some mucky muck from her ex-fiance (if not the asshat himself) who shows up, says something awful to her, and gets away with it.
I'm just not down with that. I want; A) Verity to drop kick the turd or at least tell them off. B) Someone to have Verity's back ...and drop kick the turd or at least tell them off. C) The truth about her ex-fiance to come out. or D) all of the above.
otherwise it's a constant annoyance in the background. Like sitting on straw without a blanket, and all those itchy poky little bits jabbing your skin. And just plain unsatisfying.
For a short story/novella, Angie Fox packed in the emotional wallops. I really started to feel for Verity and Frankie in this one. In Ghost of Chance, I felt like the author really gave us a good idea of how lonely both Frankie and Verity’s existence are. Verity’s ostracization from Sugarland doesn’t seem to have eased any from Skeletons in the Closet and it appears that she and Ellis are still keeping their relationship on the down low. This leads Verity to a very quiet Christmas and poor Frankie still being tethered to her house can’t really seem to find any joy in the season either. But the big emotional was Mrs. Jackson’s heartbreak over her losing her son in the Civil War. Goodness the author did a great job of describing her pain and loss. I was glad to see the story end happily but it was one emotional ride to get there.
Tavia Gilbert continues to delight as the voice of Verity and the citizens of Sugarland
Ghost of a Chance is a cute and sweet holiday cozy novella by Angie Fox and narrated by Tavia Gilbert.
Frankie and Verity are enjoying their own holiday when a ghost they’ve met before, Major Jackson comes around asking for a favor.
This short in the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries was a heartwarming holiday edition. It’s fun, enjoyable, and sweet. It was nice to have Verity and Fankie banter their way through another ghostly assignment.
Audio: Tavia Gilbert is a fantastic narrator. I just lover her voices for the characters.
Ghost of a Chance is a quick short story between two of the larger novels in the series. I would recommend listening or reading in order. I had a blast with this sweet fun holiday novella.
Another great short story in this series. This time Verity helps Mathew the ghostly soldier who appeared in the last story to reconnect with his family and his home. Sweet light read
Verity and Frankie are enjoying their own simply holiday festivities of baking Christmas Cookies and decorating the old family home when a ghost they met through their previous case, Major Jackson stops by needing a favor.
He wants to propose to his ghostly sweetheart and wishes to give her the opal necklace his mother promised him when he took a bride. Unfortunately, he and his mother had a falling out when he signed up to fight for the North and he came from a family of Southerners. Verity wants to help so in the guise of a catering server for her friend, she and Frankie attend Major Jackson's descendants' Christmas party at the old family mansion. Verity discovers things are not as the ghost described and she is determined to make it a Merry Christmas all around.
This shorty in the Southern Ghost Hunter series was a heartwarming holiday edition to the series. It's fun to have Verity and Frankie banter their way through another ghostly assignment that has a touch of romance.
Tavia Gilbert's narration of the story just made it even better.
All-round enjoyable quick short story between the larger novels of the series. I would recommend getting it after book two so the ongoing plot thread makes more sense.
A fun little novella in the Southern Spirits series, this one is set at Christmas and Verity has the chance to help two people, one living and one dead! Her ghostly friend Matthew Jackson (the one member of the family who joined the Yankee army rather than the Confederates) has decided to marry Josephine (aka jilted Josephine, another ghost), but he wants to family heirlook necklace before he proposes, the problem is his mother barred him from the house when he joined the opposing army. This is where the second favour comes in, Verity's friend has been asked to cater the Jackson's pre Christmas party and Verity is going along as a waitress, oh and Frankie is along for the ride as well, after all she needs his help to talk with the deceased Mrs Jackson!
4 Stars... A sweet, enchanting novella that holds moments of hilarity coupled with tenderness... Verity finds herself in the middle of family drama leaving her ghostly friend, Matthew, lost and frustrated... To save the day she needs to resolve old hurt, unite a couple in Love, serve up some delicious hors d’oeuvres, and manage gangster Frankie... all in a days work for a budding ghost hunter:)
I absolutely adore this series. Its such a fun read. Poor Verity having to put up with a grumpy gangster. Love all the ghost characters .In this episode, Matthew wants a family heirloom necklace so he can propose to his love Josephine. The only problem is that Matthew cant get it himself. His mother banished him when he was alive. So Verity and Frankie head off to the party of the season. At Matthews family home. While waitressing Verity searches for Matthews mother, with the help of Frankie's ghostly powers. What she finds is surprising. I wont give it away. Pick up a copy and see for yourself. I hope this series doesn't end for a long time.
4 Stars. Ghost of a Chance is book 2.5 in the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries series. This is a cozy mystery told in 1st person POV for main character Verity Long. This book is a quick read/listen at only 54 pages or 1 hour and 3 minutes.
The series is about a woman named Verity who unknowingly cleans out a man named Frankie's ashes from an old vase looking jar into her rosebushes and it traps his ghost on her property allowing him to only leave when Verity takes his urn off the property. The ghost, Frankie, shows himself to her and so begins her ability to see ghosts.
In this book, Matthew, a ghost that we met in the last book, needs some help. He reaches out to Verity to help get his mother's necklace back so that he can give it to Josephine, a ghost that we met in the first book.
I really enjoyed the historical aspect that these books have been giving since the ghosts we have met are not the newly deceased.
I'm not sure if I would have enjoyed reading this book as much as I enjoyed listening to it. The narrator really injects a lot of emotion into her reading and she really sells the suspense and fear. She did a really good job. Her voices were distinct and clear and her pronunciation was good. The audio editing was off in one place in chapter 13 where you could tell that it was pieced together and a word was partially cut off.
Verity Long has come to terms with the fact that she can see spirits, and talk to them, and…she’s actually making cookies for one of them.
But she’s drawing the line at any more ghost hunting or mystery solving.
Until a dear friend needs help locating a missing antique at the party of the year.
Not one to leave a friend in need, Verity straps on her sparkly heels and sneaks in to see what she can find—only to uncover a startling secret that will change everything.
An enjoyable Christmas novella, where Verity is again thrust into the roll of Ghost hunter.
With a great set of characters, in a well plotted and written mystery.
This was the audiobook edition from Audible UK’s ‘Plus Catalogue’ and wonderfully narrated by Tavia Gilbert.
This is a fun series to read or listen to.
Y’all need a bit of good old Southern Spirits and charm from time to time, so y’all just come on over and sit a while.
This was a quick dip back into Verity's world and it had plenty of ghostly action. Seriously, she was practically tripping over ghosts. Okay, not tripping, but I imagine it would be hard to navigate a room that was filled with both the living and the dead. You'd be bobbing and weaving all over the place.
Maybe it's just me.
Anyway. This book. Verity. Ghosts. She does her thing. Everybody ends up happy. It's a win all around.
Verity Long sees ghosts. Not only sees them, but talks with them with the help of her gangster ghost hunter..who is also a ghost. This story is another "chapter" in the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries. And was just a good as the others. Verity agrees to help a "friend" find a special something for his loved one. It takes her to a Christmas party that has no idea that the past is also having a gathering. Great writing and a wonderful story! It made me smile and have all the good feels!
Verity goes on a errand for a ghost and reunites a mother and son. A touching holiday novella where family and friends are the most important part of the season. You don't need to be familiar with the series. The author does a good job with background information.
This is a really fun Christmas mystery novella. Verity serves as a waitress at a haunted Christmas party so that she can help a ghost find a family heirloom. It concludes with a sweet, heart-warming ending. This is a great short read for those readers who like paranormal cozy mysteries!
Setting: Sugarland, Tennessee Contemporary to 2016 Genre: paranormal cozy mystery
Ever since accidentally dumping the ashes of her ex-fiancé’s gangster ancestor into her garden, Verity Long has been able to see ghosts. Well, she sees Frankie (and other strong spirits) with no problem, but borrowing his power she can see and converse with weaker ghosts. She just needs to carry his urn, which contain the vestiges of his ashes, wherever she needs his help. That’s the gist of the series. In this novella, Matthew Jackson, the ghost of a Union officer, needs Verity to retrieve the ghost of a necklace his ghost mother is wearing as she haunts the family estate. She had promised him the necklace to give to his wife when he married, and he has fallen in love with the ghost he wants to spend eternity with. He won’t go for it himself because his mother disowned him when he enlisted with the Yankees. So Verity agrees to assist her friend who is catering the Jackson’s annual Christmas party so she can speak to (the dead) Mrs. Jackson. Of course, she has to take Frankie’s urn, which one of the other servers decides will make a nice centerpiece for the tray of hors d’oeuvres she is circulating. Which makes Verity worry and yadda yadda yadda. This isn’t a bad listen. The story is pretty good. It is helpful to read at least the first book of this series before reading this, but it isn’t absolutely necessary. The characters are interesting and the dialogue is often amusing. The humor leans toward situation comedy. I enjoyed the narration.
Verity Long has come to terms with the fact she can ghosts...talk to them...and now she is making cookies for one of them even though they can't eat them. However, she is drawing the line at any more ghost hunting or mystery solving! Until a dear friend begs for her help locating a missing antique at the party of the year. Verity agrees and sneaks into the party to see what can find...only to uncover a startling secret that will change everything for her friend.
Oh Verity...you have a big heart. I'm with Frankie sometimes and just let it go especially if it's for free. She is still recovering from the financial ruin her ex's mother put on her. Poor thing. She needs to start charging for her services though.
But I can't fault her fully for wanting to help this time. Her friend really saved her bacon in the last book and it's for love....
This was fun. Not as good as the others, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit.
The mystery was fun but easily solvable. I had a feeling something would happen and it happened. I won't give away spoilers.
The ending was adorable! Love is a beautiful thing.
Great narration as normal. She is perfect for these!
Overall, I am loving this series. This was a fun short story that had a fun, but easily solvable mystery. I can't wait for book 3! I'll give this one 4 stars.
Once again, I found that I really enjoyed the short novellas that accompany the Souther Ghost Hunter Mysteries series. In this particular novella, Verity finds herself tasked with helping a ghost that was introduced in The Skeleton in the Closet, Matthew. Matthew has found love with the ghost of “jilted” Josephine from Southern Spirits and is eager to propose to his ghostly beloved. However, the ring he wants to use is with the spirit of his mother, who disowned him when he joined the Union during the Civil War.
Verity’s gangster ghost, Frankie is skeptical as usual and doesn’t see the point in helping Matthew, but Verity sees an opportunity to not only help Matthew find a ring, but to also reconnect with his beloved mother. Overall, this was an interesting and engaging short novella. I love how it adds another layer to the development of the universe that is being built in these books. These novellas are nice little break from the larger mysteries and they allow the reader to become more invested in a broader range of characters. This series is definitely just as much about the dead and the living.
Another quick read - a short story that comes between #2 and #3 of the series. Verity's old friend from previous books, a Union Army ghost, comes to ask her a favor. He and his ghost girlfriend Josephine want to get married (if they can find a ghost preacher.) He wants Verity to get a necklace that belonged to his mother, which she had said he should give to his wife. The ghost was a member of the Jackson family, one of the two feuding wealthy families in Sugarland. But the necklace is at his family estate, where the most recent generation of Jacksons live. Verity's friend Lauralee is catering a big party there, so she hires Verity on as a waitress to get her into the house. However, the resident ghosts are wreaking havoc at the party by throwing 'cold spots' at the guests and the catering staff. Lori has to find the matriarch, whose ghost is still grieving for her dead son, to tell her that he is still around and needs the necklace. But her son refuses to enter the house, saying that his mother kicked him out when he joined the Union army instead of the Confederates. Verity does her job despite the commotion, leaving her army ghost friend happy - but still looking for a preacher.
