This was an entertaining novella! It was pretty short and I am not sure how much it added to the larger series, but it was a fun way to spend some time on a weekend morning. This story features Max Denton, who is Macey’s father. In the last story to feature this character, Raging Dawn, we met Max as he fell for Savina. It seems that they have since gone their own way since that story.
Savina goes to a Christmas party with her fiance hoping to acquire an amulet. Max shows up a bit later in disguise trying to get his hands on the same thing. There was an interesting group of characters at this party and I had a good time watching Max and Savina dance around each other. This isn’t as much action as I would have hoped but it was entertaining nonetheless. I thought this was worth the read, but I didn’t feel it added much to the overall series.
In the last novella, I thought Max and Savina got together and had their HEA. Yeah, nope. He left her because he was scared of losing her. She didn't know if he was alive or dead. Her feelings really didn't matter. Ass. They meet again about 2 years later on a mission to recover a valuable artifact (an amulet) that would allow a vampire to enjoy the sun. I appreciated Savina got to confront Max on his A-hole behavior. I enjoyed the mission, but I don't know about this romance.
Geez, Max has some issues, doesn't he? I mean, I get how his wife's brutal death has shaped his life and everything, but the guy just walked away from Savina, the woman who loves him and is totally down with his vampire hunting ways, and disappeared without a word. OUCH. I mean that. OUCH.
He's lucky Savina didn't do more than just threaten him with a gun when she confronted him again. Heck, he should have threatened himself with a gun for her just to even the playing field.
To be fair, Max was as broken up about his leaving as Savina was, but at least he knew he wasn't dead in a ditch somewhere. She didn't know that. She had to live through two agonizing years of not knowing anything and he's darn lucky she didn't extract her pound of flesh in a much more visceral manner than she did.
That said, these two might just make a perfect pair if Max can keep from bolting every time he fears for Savina's safety. Time will tell.
Raging Winter is a stand alone novella that is part of the Gardella Vampire Hunter series. I won't say a lot about it or sugar coat it but I wasn't a fan.
Max had issues to put it mildly and there was no covering them to my satisfaction in the 82 pages that it took to get through the novella. On top of that, the plot in this little story fell short of interesting for a lack of better words. Lastly, it didn't even begin to scratch the Christmas itch that I was hoping it would when I picked it up.
I truly feel that you have to be familiar with this series and have read it to enjoy this novella. It is marketed as a stand alone but there was too much left unsaid from before and after. Without a history of these characters this novella is just a lack luster story that is truly forgettable.
Max Denton and Savina meet in a great house in England at Christmas. She is pretending to be married to Liam. Max is pretending to be a Dutch antiquities collector. All of them are searching for a broach formerly owened by Rasputin the Russian. Max has abanded his love Savina because of his fear of losing her like he did his wife, to the vampires.
Raging Winter is a continuation of Colleen's The Gardella Vampire Hunters series. It can be read as a stand alone story, but as I am a fan of this author's books, I have previously read the others.
In this story Max, a kick ass vampire hunter, who has a history with the heroine of the story, Savina, is in disguise at a house party. He is looking for a special amulet which in a vampire's hands will allow them to walk in the daylight!
Savina is also at the house party, she too is searching for the amulet. She is masquerading as a married woman, there with her husband. She is also a photographer, and her invite to the party came because she is to photograph the house for a magazine. Her pretend husband is there with a few tricks up his sleeves which may help them identify vampires.
Max and Savina don't realise that the other will be in attendance, and after breaking her heart two years previously, it makes for an intense scene when Savina finally gets to confront him. Apart from their history, and the chance of them perhaps rekindling their romance, this book was also great because of the excitement of the search for the amulet. Will they find it, will they be discovered? Will anybody lose their life during the search?
As always Colleen's stories never fail to enthrall, and without the need for a vampire in your presence, ha ha! I really enjoyed loved this book.
This story is almost after Max leaves Savina in the middle of the night after living together for 2 years. They run into each while on the same assignment almost two years later when she's with her husband.
Max infiltrated the Tutela and is looking for an amulet before Nicholas Iscariot gets it first. Meanwhile, Savina is also undercover with her new husband portraying her alternate who the famous photographer willing to take Christmas pictures of a couple working for the Tutela who are in possession of the amulet.
Max is shocked when he sees his beloved after all these years, but thinks he's safe because he's dressed as an elderly man. Both she truly knows him and realizes who he was before she even saw him.
Now he has regrets for his past actions. But Savina doesn't want to hear them.
Short novella that takes place about 3 years after the previous short about Max and Savina. Separated for almost 2 years they unexpectedly run into each other while searching for an amulet. Staking and kisses ensue!
