Enid Mary Blyton (1897–1968) was an English author of children's books.

Born in South London, Blyton was the eldest of three children, and showed an early interest in music and reading. She was educated at St. Christopher's School, Beckenham, and - having decided not to pursue her music - at Ipswich High School, where she trained as a kindergarten teacher. She taught for five years before her 1924 marriage to editor Hugh Pollock, with whom she had two daughters. This marriage ended in divorce, and Blyton remarried in 1943, to surgeon Kenneth Fraser Darrell Waters. She died in 1968, one year after her second husband.

Blyton was a prolific author of children's books, who penned an estimated 800 books over about 40 years. Her stories were often either children's adventure and mystery stories, or fantasies involving magic. Notable series include: The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, The Five Find-Outers, Noddy, The Wishing Chair, Mallory Towers, and St. Clare's.

According to the Index Translationum, Blyton was the fifth most popular author in the world in 2007, coming after Lenin but ahead of Shakespeare.

The seventh book in Enid Blyton's The Noddy Library, a series of chapter-books devoted to the adventures of a wooden toy with a nodding head, Noddy at the Seaside sees our hero on holiday with his good friend, Big Ears the brownie. Whether learning that the sea comes in and goes out, or discovering that it isn't a very pleasant experience to "catch" a crab, Noddy and Big Ears enjoy their time at the shore. But all vacations must come to an end...

As mentioned in my reviews of Well Done, Noddy! and Noddy Goes To School , the fifth and sixth titles in the series, I understand that there is some controversy attached to these books, due to the inclusion of black-faced wooden dolls - called golliwogs - in the original editions. My copies were printed in 1996 however, and must be revised editions, as I encountered no golliwogs.

But despite my relief that the young readers of today will not have egregiously racist depictions forced upon them, I cannot recommend the Noddy books, which I find mawkishly sentimental, and I continue to be mystified by Blyton's worldwide popularity.

I love it as it still has the original charm about it and illustrations. Perfect for teaching young children how to read and English grammar.

I remember watching Noddy on the telly when I was little but I don't ever remember picking up one of the books. I was actually surprised to see it was written by Enid Blyton. I didn't realize it was that old.

This was okay, I would have enjoyed this more as a kid. Big Ears seems bossier than I remember and the way Noddy paid for his milk was downright odd. Think I'll just give this one to my nieces.

I was looking forward to reading this as I used to enjoy Noddy as a child and it is mostly a nice little book about Noddy going on holiday. However, I cannot ignore the pictures and some of the descriptions in this book that made for very uncomfortable reading. I believe modern versions have been updated, as well they should be. I just felt in the end like Noddy has had his day and perhaps should remain in the past.

Sometimes a little nostalgia is all one needs. Noddy was a personal favourite of mine as a kid. Rather he was the one responsible for my never ending affair with books, reading and Enid Blyton. Decades later, turned out to be a quick 20 minutes read, yet was mixed with nostalgic childhood memories. Especially devoured the cute illustrations by Beek. Talk about heightened emotions! :)

Mum picked up a very old copy of this book today at a car-boot sale and we both had a read. I remember them from my childhood but reading it again as an adult still gave me the same kind of happy feelings as when I was little.
Short sweet and cute... All kids should know about the stories of Noddy!

"Oh, Big-Ears, I'm frightened. Our tent is gone. Can I please cuddle up to you in case I'm blown away too?"
"Yes," said Big-Ears, and he let Noddy creep into his kind, friendly arms.
Not too friendly I hope Big-Ears!

The crab scene always scared me so much as a child though the story was entertaining.

Another beautiful Enid Blyton classic. And how true it is... holidays certainly are nice, but coming home is nicer.

I grew up with the Noddy books, which is probably not surprising as I had a grandmother who was very proud of her English heritage. In this story Big-Ears, Noddy's friend, suggests the two of them take a vacation at the seaside, which Noddy agrees to. The story then tells of their prepartions for the trip, the trip itself and the various situations they get into while at the seaside, such as their tent being blown away in a storm. However they manage to survive everything and return home. The book ends with Noddy coming up with a song about their vacation. All in all this is a book that is sure to delight a young child. However this be cautioned that this not a reader for beginners. If they are going to read it themselves it is best they have been reading for a bit. On that note, happy reading.

Here's another of the Noddy books L. can't get enough of. Could it be that she wants to go to the sea? Is it related to the description Blyton gives of the sea: That it's a large amount of water that goes all the way to the horizon (wonder what Jung would've had to say about this!).
Her daddy decided that it must be related to L.'s need to go to the beach and we took her there during the July holidays. Obviously we couldn't put a tent up the way Noddy and Big Ears do, but we did spend the night and went to the beach early the next morning ... and since school's started L. doesn't mind not reading this one to go to sleep to.

Every year I start with Children's books, to "train myself" (having a Grand Daughter who is almost one year old).

The adventure at the seaside is one of the funniest. Noddy and Big Ears leave for the seaside and have a wonderful few days until the storm takes their camping tent up in the air. As they return to Toyland, everybody is so happy to see them again that they celebrate with a wonderful party.

dan saat sy membeli kembali buku tersebut dalam waktu sekarang dan membacakannya pada keponakan saya, dia memiliki kesukaan yang sama dan selalu meminta sy membacakannya. menarik sekali (^.^)

I had a bunch of Noddy books even before I could read. My mom would read them to me and there was a phase where I wouldn’t eat until my mom read out a Noddy Book or so I am told. There were a couple of books that I knew by heart and would pretend to read out from them.
Noddy is a fun pal to have as a child.
