National bestselling and award-winning author Joanna Campbell Slan was born in Jacksonville, Florida, but she grew up in a small town in Indiana. After graduating from Ball State University with a degree in journalism, she worked as a newspaper reporter, a newspaper ad salesperson, a television talk show host, a college teacher, a public relations professional, and a motivational speaker. In that capacity, she was named by Sharing Ideas Magazine as “one of the top 25 speakers in the world.”

Slan's work has appeared in five of the New York Times Bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul books, and one of those became a television show. She is the author of nearly 80 books, nonfiction and fiction, including Death of a Schoolgirl, which won the 2013 Daphne du Maurier Award of Excellence.

Joanna's personal essays have appeared in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, and one was made into a television program on the Pax Network. The college textbook Joanna wrote—Using Stories and Humor: Grab Your Audience—has been praised as an invaluable resource by Benjamin Netanyahu’s speechwriter and endorsed by Toastmasters, International.

RT Book Reviews has called Joanna “one of mystery’s rising stars.” Her first novel—Paper, Scissors, Death—was an Agatha Award finalist. It features Kiki Lowenstein, a spunky single mom who lives in St. Louis. The sixth book in that series will be released Summer 2013.

Kirkus Reviews has said, “Slan’s mysteries are most valuable for the well-developed characters and the issues they raise.” RT Book Reviews has said, “Kiki is so darn entertaining that she’ll keep readers hooked.” A series of short stories featuring Kiki are available on Kindle.

Joanna’s newest series—The Jane Eyre Chronicles—began with Death of a Schoolgirl (Berkley) and continues with the release of Death of a Dowager. The series features Charlotte Brontë’s classic heroine Jane Eyre as an amateur sleuth.

As “Lila Dare,” Joanna has penned the fourth book in the Southern Beauty Shop series—Wave Good-bye.

Joanna is married to David Slan. The Slans live on Jupiter Island, Florida.

Wonderful stories by a superb group of authors, you cannot go wrong with HAPPY HOMICIDES. It’s a must have collection for every mystery reader.

With the variety of impressive authors participating in this anthology, I knew this was going to be a spectacular book, and it was! There are stories by many favorite authors of mine. Authors that when I see their names, I know I am in for a reading treat. And then there were so new to me authors who now have a new fan in me!

The short story format of each individual offering did nothing to lessen the mystery, fun, or integrity of each story. Each author did incredible work with the word count I’m sure they had to be considerate of. In fact, they were so well done, it felt like reading thirteen full length novels in one sitting. HAPPY HOMICIDES is just proof of the talent each author in this ensemble.

It’s my extreme hope that there will be a second volume from these great names!

Note: When you purchase this book, you are given a wonderful opportunity to download a free book!

This was a very entertaining read. All thirteen stories were great. Nancy Jill Thames story "Teddy Saves Christmas" is a shiny Christmas present wrapped with murder. When Jillian Bradley finds herself alone for the holidays, her dog Teddy, a cute little Yorkie, finds a homeless woman with an interesting but dangerous secret. Teddy won't leave her on the street so Jillian has no choice but to take her home. Thames stories have a Jessica Fletcher "Murder She Wrote" feel to me and this one has a surprising end. Joyce and Jim Lavene's short story "The Dog Who Came for Christmas" was awesome and left me hoping that they revisit these characters again perhaps in a series. A woman running from her past, and a dog all come together in an interesting twist and a heartwarming ending. Another story in the anthology that I really enjoyed was "Dying for Holiday Tea: A Beach Tea Shop Novella by Linda Gordon Hengerer. Three sister's the Powell's runs their grandmother's old tea shop. The sister's find her recipe book, with her gingerbread recipe. Someone wants the recipe bad enough to commit murder. Hengerer is a very descriptive writer and I could smell the smells and see the sights of the tea shop. I am looking forward to her first book in the Beach Tea Shop mysteries. "Happy Homicides" will make a great holiday read for anyone. I received a copy from the publisher for a fair and honest review.

Happy Homicides is a must read book! I appreciate anthologies because they give me an opportunity to read novellas written by several of my favorite authors and, also, serves as an introduction to new authors. This holiday collection of short stories and novellas was written by a group of talented authors including: Joanna Campbell Slan, Neil Pakcy, Lois Winston, Annie Adams, Jenna Bennett, Nancy Jill Thames, Sara Rosett, Camille Minichino, Nancy Warren, Linda Gordon Hengerer, Joyce and Jim Lavene, and Teresa Trent. This was a wonderful way for me to give thought to the approaching holiday season!

This was a very entertaining read. Several of my favorite authors contributed to this book. Rather than attempting to summarize or review each story, I will briefly highlight the stories they wrote. Joyce and Jim Lavene's short story "The Dog Who Came for Christmas" was wonderful. The main character is Carrie Shaw, a veterinarian. Carrie moves to a small-town, Grover's Corners, to escape a tragedy from past. Carrie and an abused dog come together in an interesting twist and an endearing, heartwarming ending. I hope that Joyce and Jim Lavene revisit these characters, perhaps in a new series. Nancy Jill Thames story, "Teddy Saves Christmas", is superbly written as well. Jillian Bradley finds herself alone for the holidays, her dog Teddy, a cute little Yorkie, finds Rose, an ill, homeless woman with an interesting but dangerous secret. Teddy won't leave Rose on the street so based on Teddy's approval Jillian decides to take Rose home to recuperate putting all of them in danger. This story has an unexpected ending. The novella by Linda Gordon Hengerer, “Dying for Holiday Tea: A Beach Tea Shop Novella”, is another story I truly enjoyed. The Powell sisters run their grandmother's old tea shop and find her recipe book, with her treasured gingerbread recipe. This recipe is desired so badly that someone commit a murder. The descriptions within the story are so well written the reader feels as if they are there savoring the scents and envisioning the sights of the tea shop.

Happy Homicides contains thirteen stories...that should be enough for everyone to find something they like. These are just three of my favorites. There are ten more stories, to choose from, and a bonus offer with recipes and holiday craft ideas. I really appreciated was the variety of the story lines so there is something for everyone: mystery, humor and romance, ranging from light-hearted to murder. Each story take place between Thanksgiving and Christmas, yet each is unique.

"Happy Homicides" will make a great holiday read for anyone. I really enjoyed this book! Actually, I enjoyed them all. You can't go wrong with these thirteen cozy, holiday themed mysteries. The publisher/authors thoughtfully priced this collection just right making it affordable to those on tight budgets as a treasure for one’s self or to purchase as a gift for friends who enjoy cozy mysteries. This is the perfect book to get the reader in the mood for the holidays. Imagine, sitting by the fireplace, wrapped in a comfortable blanket with a cup of hot chocolate and a wonderful book.

Full Disclosure: I purchased this book as several stories were written by authors I consider to be some of my “favorites”. I did received a complimentary, advanced copy of this book from an author who has a story included in this anthology in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed in this review are my own.

Happy Homicides is like a holiday sampler platter – every morsel is delicious, and when you are finished you want the full menu! I enjoy anthologies. The stories are shorter so I can read them on the go, and I get in-between glimpses about familiar characters from my favorite authors, as well as discovering new authors who are probably similar to ones I already like. This collection was one of the best I have read and includes stories by Joanna Campbell Slan, Neil Pakcy, Lois Winston, Annie Adams, Jenna Bennett, Nancy Jill Thames, Sara Rosett, Camille Minichino, Nancy Warren, Linda Gordon Hengerer, Joyce and Jim Lavene, and Teresa Trent.

The stories are all holiday themed, but that is where the similarity ends. It’s a diverse set: we get dogs and cats and children of course, and some murder sprinkled in. We go to familiar settings like tea shops and craft stores and recipe competitions, but also take a fun trip to a trailer park. We meet sisters and aunts who are wonderful family, but there are some husbands who are not so wonderful and some scary strangers. One of the stories is very down home, while another is almost scientific, and Jane Austen makes an appearance in one story.

I did have a couple of favorite stories, but I enjoyed each and every one of them, and ended up purchasing several books by new-to-me contributing authors because I enjoyed their Happy Homicide so much. It was a great way to start getting into the holiday spirit.

This is a must read. It’s well written, quick to read, and very entertaining. And . . . there are recipes and crafts!

I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.

Just in time for holiday shopping -- a baker's dozen of attractive mysteries. A great way for a mystery fan (like me) to visit again with some favorite writers and discover new ones. Twelve authors contribute 13 varied tales. (Joanna Campbell Stein contributes two stories -- each featuring a favorite heroine -- Cara Mia Delgatto and Kiki Lowenstein.) I was happy to visit Annie Adams Flower Shop again where murder seems to be always available, even during holiday season. A special delight was Camille Minichino's "Neon Ornaments" as she prequels her Table of Elements mystery series with an introduction to her heroine of that series. If you're a dog lover, you'll enjoy Joyce and Jim Lavene's "Dog Who Came for Christmas," Nancy Jill Thames's "Teddy Saves Christmas," and Neil Plakey's "Dog Forbid." Other authors new to me were Lois Winston, Jenna Bennett, Nancy Warren, Sara Rosett, Linda Gordon Hengerer and Teresa Trent. Each contributed as tantalizing tidbit to raise my appetite for more. There's a variety of plot lines, a variety or crimes and criminals but altogether satisfying. Together, these 12 authors provide a fun way to celebrate the 12 days of Christmas.

This was a great book full of so many great stories we meet different people who are celebrating Christmas like Cara Mia Delgatto and her shop and how she helps someone with Christmas gifts, and a long ago lost letter, Also Quincy who is recently engaged to her boyfriend and the jubilee who someone is trying to bump off contestants too, there just so many great stories for anyone who loves cozy mysteries and wants to loose themselves in the Christmas Spirit.

I really enjoyed the different stories just felt enough to hold me over until the next book by certain authors are published and found some authors I hadn't read and now am looking forward to seeing what other great books they have published!

13 novellas by 12 mystery writers, how could you possibly go wrong with this book?! I don't think I had read any or much by any of these authors but I definitely plan to search out these author's other books. Some I might even already have on my Kindle (so many books not enough time)

Not all of the stories had a death, but there was some sort of mystery that needed to be solved. I'm not sure if I can pick out which one was my favorite because they were all good. I don't think I figured any of them out until the end when the killer or perpetrator was revealed. Of course there were several stories that involved dogs and I might have favored those a bit more, but only because I'm a dog lover!

I really enjoyed this collection of stories. I got to read additional adventures with some of my favorite characters. I love Cara Mia, by Sian, and found the story very heartwarming. There's nothing better than Savannah and Rafe spending Christmas at her mother"s by Jenna Bennett. Sara Rossetti is another favorite and another murder is solved by the location expert. Some of the other authors like Nancy Warren I was familiar with as well and it was nice to see the protagonist solve another mystery. The other authors with whom I was not familiar were great additions and I look forward to reading full length books from them. Highly recommended.

1 Lost and Found Holiday Gifts: A Cara Mia Delgatto by Joanna Campbell Slan

I liked it. but I thought it was interesting with the title that there was no homicide in the first story.
shows a little bit of Cara and friends life and they find time to reach out to others.

2 Dog Forbid by Neil Plakey

still no homicides. Not a happy subject either but a happy ending.

Dog is stolen while on vacation along with ipads. That would ruin a vacation. Deals with puppy mills too. Which are depressing.

3 Elementary, My Dear Gertie by Lori Winston

a murder finally. also a imaginary friend and A not boring family Christmas. Keeps you guessing.

There are 13 stories in this collection. Some of the authors were familiar to me and there series I read. Some of them I have never heard of before but I now want to read there series. I really liked A Diamond Choker for Christmas by Nancy Warren I loved the characters and would read more about them in fact I have already down loaded one of her books.

This collection is good fun mysteries. You can just read one if you want at a time or the whole 13 stories. I have read most of them in two days. I will read the others when I have more free time.

Some of the books were just too short I wanted to read more about them. I liked The Dog who Came for Christmas by Jim and Joyce Lavene. You could feel the terror of the main character.

I was given this ebook to read for free and in return I agreed to give a honest review of Happy Homicides and be part of it's blog tour.

This collection of holiday-themed short stories is a great way to sample the works of several authors. All of the novellas fall into the category of cozy mysteries, with a few including a romantic angle.

"Menace at the Christmas Market" by Sara Rosett was one of the first to really grab my attention. I also enjoyed "Dying for Holiday Tea" by Linda Gordon Hengerer and "The Rowan Tree Twig" by Joanna Campbell Slan. My favorite was "The Deadliest Christmas Pageant Ever" by Teresa Trent. I have been following the Pecan Bayou series from the beginning and was really happy to encounter Betsy Livingston and her friends once more.

If you enjoy Christmas stories and mysteries, this anthology will be a great way for you to get into the holiday spirit.

This is a cute collection of cozy stories with a Christmas theme. I say "stories" because two of them are not mysteries.

While "LOST AND FOUND HOLIDAY GIFTS: A Cara Mia Delgatto Novella" by Joanna Campbell Slan is a cute story, it isn't much of a mystery. Cara Mia Delgatto is asked by her (sort of) boyfriend, Jay Boehner, to help one of the residents of his nursing home facility. The woman, Clarissa, is withdrawn and does not respond to any attempts to reach her. Jay hopes that if Cara can help decorate Clarissa's homemade dollhouse, she will come out of her shell. A secondary mystery involves a pair of sisters, Sondra and Wilma Steinmacher. There's a lot of character introductions and some understandable angst on Cara's part regarding her own family history, but the mystery is very light. There's not really much detecting and the dollhouse "mystery" is solved by a very convenient coincidence.

"CONTINGENT ON APPROVAL: A Savannah Martin Christmas Novella" by Jenna Bennett is not even remotely a mystery. It's pure romance. Savannah Martin and her boyfriend Rafe spend Christmas with her family, which includes her unpleasant, Queen Bee of a mother. There's no mystery in this novella, which basically just ties things up from the prior book.

"A DIAMOND CHOKER FOR CHRISTMAS: A Toni Diamond Mystery Novella" by Nancy Warren is a funny, lighthearted suspense story about a diamond choker that is stolen during a Christmas party. The characters and the background are charming and made me laugh. I'm a native Texan and, yes, I know people just like this (some of them are my relatives). This story also goes to prove you can have a mystery without a murder.

"MENACE AT THE CHRISTMAS MARKET: A Murder on Location Novella" by Sara Rosett is another fun, suspenseful story. Kate Sharp finds herself investigating the mysterious disappearance of Harriet Hayden, who writes Jane Austen pastiches, and the poisoning (by mistletoe berries) of Hayden's biggest fan. Note: I wish someone really would write "Miss Bingley Suspects. It’s a spin-off, really, and starts a completely new series that has a lot of mystery in it as well as romance. Miss Bingley has to solve a murder at a house party and becomes quite a bit less stuffy in the process." It sounds like it would be a lot of fun.

"DYING FOR HOLIDAY TEA: A Beach Tea Shop Novella" by Linda Gordon Hengerer is a new series set in a tea shop in Florida and features three sisters - Alex, Chelsea, and Dani. In this novella, they investigate the hit-and-run death of a homeless man who was spending the night in their shop.

"THE DEADLIEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER" by Teresa Trent is another fun, enjoyable Texas story, this one about the murder of a pageant director, apparently over the highly coveted role of "snow princess." It reminded me of rivalries over cheerleading positions in high school.

"THE ROWAN TREE TWIG: A Kiki Lowenstein Novella" by Joanna Campbell Slan - unlike her earlier story, this one is definitely a mystery. One of Kiki's neighbors, who is well known for his over-the-top Christmas displays, is electrocuted while putting up Christmas lights. Of course, it turns out that it was not an accident and one of Kiki's friends is implicated.

This is a good collection of stories and definitely worth a try.

I can only give this anthology an OK rating. I feel the title is misleading. Not every story has a homicide, nor are they all true cozies in my opinion.

I read series written by about half of the contributors so I was excited to request a review copy from one of the participants in exchange for my honest review. Unfortunately, none of the stories by them are from the series I read that they write. No matter, I was up for whatever.

What I really appreciated was the variety of the story lines. The stories all take place around Thanksgiving or Christmas, but are all so different, from puppy mills, to meeting the family, to missing people, etc.

Most of the 13 stories I would rate from OK to Like with no one story that really impressed me. I really could have done without the two stories which involved abused animals. Yes, I know it exists, but it brought down the tone of the anthology and neither was what I would term a cozy mystery beyond the unpleasant subject matter. There were also two stories focusing on homeless people and one story with no homicide or mystery at all (just a meet the family)and in a couple there was no sleuthing.

I think the purpose of anthologies is to either provide additional info. on your existing series (especially to focus on secondary characters) or to introduce yourself to new readers and hope your story will entice them to read some of your full length work. If this was the case, it fell short for me.

At the current price of .99, I don't think many people would be disappointed with their investment. I got a couple hours of decent reading that would be good if I was doing something where I would have to put down my ereader then go back to it.

Delightful Stories! I just finished reading Happy Homicide: Thirteen Cozy Mysteries for the Holidays. It contains some delightful cozy mysteries by Camille Minichino, Nancy Warren, Jenna Bennett, Sara Rosett, Neil Pakcy, Joanna Campbell Slan (the first and last story are by this author), Lois Winston, Annie Adams, Nancy Jill Thames, Linda Gordon Hengerer, Teresa Trent, and Joyce and Jim Lavene. I liked this book because it gave me a chance to check out some series that I have not read before and revisit some series that I enjoy. I like the story by Camille Minichino because it is a prequel to The Periodic Table series. One of the first series I have read in the cozy mystery genre was The Periodic Table series. All the stories in the book are easy to read and enjoyable. The common theme throughout the books is that they all take place during the holiday season. If you like to read cozy mysteries, then you will enjoy these delightful short stories. I give Happy Homicide 4 out of 5 stars.

Great Escape For Readers Of Any Genre
“Happy Homicides” is a fun read, and lives up to its description – “cozy.” I seldom take time to read mysteries these days, but chose this to entertain me while I completed a manuscript. The 13 stories are well-written, and prior to reading the set I had not been introduced to any of their writing. Now, I’m seeking some of their single works.

Authors Annie Adams, Jenna Bennett, Joanna Campbell Slan, Linda Gordon Henderer, Camille Minichino, Neil S. Plakcy, Sara Rosett, Nancy Jill Thames, Teresa Trent, Nancy Warren, and Lois Winston quickly won me over with colorful scenery and characters, and I found myself reaching for the next story every time a took a break.

As an animal lover, the stories with animal stars were my favorites, of course, but I enjoyed the variety. The stories are short, well-paced, and although I could have read more, the adventures were developed well enough to pique my interest in other works by each author. I would definitely recommend this set to mystery lovers and anyone who just enjoys a good, wholesome read.

Want to have fun-filled evenings getting you I nto the seasonal spirits? You can with Happy Homicides! I particularly liked five very different selections: Joanna Campbell Slan gives us both coasts wit her Kiki Lowenstein and Cara Mia Delgato delightful romps. Then there's Flowers, Food, & Felonies @ the NY Jubilee by Annie Adams which provided me with my 'fix' of Quincy (Q), Alex, KC, & Q's off-beat family. I love those flower shop mysteries. There was also Menace at the Christmas Market by Sara Rosett. A homicidal romp through the British countryside celebrating the Jane Austin followers & her tribute or fan-fiction writers that moves steadily building to unveiling of whodunnit. The author developed the characters wholly in diverse personalities. She left you wanting another installment in the life of Kate & Alex. And if that was enough after experiencing a bitter-sweet Jim & Joyce Lavene jewel, I got to travel to Amish lands to investigate the Amish puppy mills. There's also included Christian, inspirational stories and other heart-warming inclusions. A well-rounded assortment to warm you hearts on chilly evenings. It's only $.99 now, so it's a bargain.

First, I must admit that when I asked to read and review this book, I was not familiar with any of the authors. I love cozy mysteries, though and couldn’t resist wanting to read this collection of thirteen stories all in one huge compilation of 669 pages. Some of the stories have murder in them. Some do not. All the stories are well written, well-paced mysteries that are character driven and they are “cozy” mysteries. There are stories with animals in them and some without. Some of the stories I enjoyed more than others, but overall I liked them all.
I really enjoyed this set and can recommend it to others without any difficulty, especially now around the holiday season. I wish there was a paperback version available in order that I could purchase it and keep it in my home library and read when I felt like reading a cozy mystery short story. There’s a variety of stories here, enough for someone to love. My personal favorites were Dog Forbid, Teddy Saves Christmas, and The Dog Who came For Christmas. Yes, these have animals starring in them.

I only read this story by Nancy Warren:

A Diamond Choker for Christmas by Nancy Warren
A Toni Diamond Mystery Novella
No special occasion can sneak by without some sort of incident when Toni Diamond is involved. That includes the yearly Lady Bianca Christmas party her mama throws each year.

Linda, Toni's mother, is outdoing herself this year. She needs more lights and decorations on her mobile home than any other of the Pecan Heights residents. Linda is also outdoing herself when it comes to being decorated with bling. And that is what has Toni worried.

Toni falls into trouble whether she's looking for it or not. If you haven't read the first three antics of this high-powered makeup sales gal, be sure to check out book one; Frosted Shadow, book two; Ultimate Concealer, and book three; Midnight Shimmer.

Thirteen stories for the holidays. How great is that!

Some of my favorite authors contributed to this anthology along with some new ones for me.

Each story, though not a full length novel, was so well written it felt complete. That shows the talent of these authors, giving you a beginning, middle, and end, in a limited amount of words.

Spend the holidays meeting new characters, falling in love, and solving some murders.

Each new story brings that feeling of wonder. You are entering a new world, going on a new adventure.

After I finished one story, I couldn’t resist starting the next one. And so it went until I finished them all.

With weather cooling down, these stories would be great companions while curled up with a snug blanket and a hot cuppa tea.

I received this book for my honest review.

Happy Homicide contains 13 short stories of murder, mayhem, mystery and romance all connected by a Christmas holiday theme. These stories are penned by some of my favorite cozy mystery authors including: Joyce and Jim Lavene; Joanna Campbell Slan with Kiki Lowenstein and another for Cara Mia Delgatto; Jenna Bennett with a dilemma for Savanna Martin; Teresa Trent and her Pecan Bayou characters; Nancy Jill Thames with another Teddy the dog tale; and seven other delightful stories. If you are looking to get into a holiday mood, then try this anthology…there is sure to be at least one entry that will delight you and you may even find a Christmas miracle or two. Finally, this anthology also provides recipes and crafts to really help get you in the holiday spirit. Disclosure: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
