Love Under Fire

Rate this book
After the Dust
Zev is an aging Navy SEAL who's fought for his country on three continents. Julian is an unemployed ex-prostitute with massive student debt and a chess obsession who plans to be president someday.

Sleeping
Ex-con Rey Vales gets cut up by a would-be mugger. The free clinic is open late and Dr. Lovely is even more lovely than his name suggests. It's a pity his temperament doesn't match his outward appearance.

In Case of Emergency
Kev Liang waits tables and occasionally deals coke at a trendy midtown restaurant. When a gunman breaks into the kitchen, he's surprised to find that his mild-mannered favorite customer (and secret crush) has some serious underworld connections.

A collection of three gay romance novelettes , two of which contain chess, two of which contain firefights, and all three of which contain explicit adult content.

I was not expecting this. Funny, sweet, tragic in a casual "life sucks but we just gotta keep going" sort of way. Wow. How have I not read any Eleanor Kos before now?! So here are my notes on the three stories:
In Case of Emergency:
So good! Scary shit happening, but somehow this is lovely and sweet... I have no idea how she did that! Kev is awfully dumb for being a part-time drug dealer -- he's so innocent, like 1st grade boys, pretending to be cool but mostly coming off as mildly goofy.
Sleeping:
Wait, what's next? I want more!!!!! Pretty please?
After the Dust:
Amazing! This. Just this. Background info -- some one I love is new military, and there are so many things here that I want them to read here. Descriptions of the Sandbox, the banter, the actual firefight...no, I don't want that last one confirmed after all.

This was an unexpected delight. All three of these short stories had a protagonist that was a little banged up and world-weary (hitman, ex-con bar bouncer, Navy SEAL), paired with someone that had been knocked around a bit by life but hadn’t lost their positive outlook (surprisingly naive drug-dealing waiter, free clinic doctor, and homeless kid who planned on being president someday).

Despite the relative brevity of the stories, I got invested in the characters and was sad when they ended. There’s not a lot of explicit content - which I realize is a pro for some and a con for others - but I enjoyed them a lot regardless. I just wish I could have gotten a little bit more, especially the first story. I would love a glimpse into their future.

This was an impulse purchase and I'm really glad I made it!

Three short stories around three very different couples and situations - a hitman & waiter, a navy seal & student and a doctor & bouncer at a drag queen bar! All three plots were well delivered, all different and for the word count, story line and characters were well established.

I have a couple of grumbles, the first would be the length of the stories, each hooked me and I just wished they had been longer! The second grumble relates to the first.....the endings are fade to black, just at the cusp of a new relationship.....but I'm greedy and I needed more!!!!

Overall, a really enjoyable read, full of humour, warmth and two opposites attracting to make a whole.

Really enjoyed this. As always, Kos has a knack for setting up relationships between the most prickly of personalities and making it seem entirely effortless - whether it's a privileged rich kid doctor and an ex-con, or a soldier with PTSD and an ex-hooker. All of these guys are at the moderate to severe end of the messed up scale, which means you just really, really want to see them happy, and that's what you get given with this collection. My only complaint is that I wish these stories were longer - particularly In Case of Emergency, which really sank its hooks into me good and deep despite being quite short. I could happily have read a whole book about Kev and Marcin. Highly recommended!

I'm such a big fan of Kos's style. I would read anything of hers, honestly. This trilogy of sexy, sweet novellas just made me love her more, especially "Sleeping." I loved watching the relationship grow between Dr. Lovely and Rey. I loved the relationship development in all these stories, honestly. Kos is just so dang good at writing chemistry ... and sex. The sex scenes are fantastic, too ;)

This was a very quick read. Three well-written short stories about three different couples. I wish they had been longer, the second one ended quite abruptly.

Three stories in a good M/M anthology. I'd give the 1st and 3rd 4 stars, and the middle one 3 (didn't really "get" it). Overall 4 stars for a reader that might want to pick up an M/M book with stories not novel length (but not particularly short either).

Three nice little stories. I think the author has a gift for dialogue, it’s usually quick and snappy, also I liked the dynamic between three different pairs, it didn’t feel repetitive. I think the second is my favourite (and it’s the shortest, eh), even if I generally love John Wick-alike media (and that’s def Marcin from the first one).

First of all, thank you. I have been waiting for captivating stories like these for a while! Most of what I read in contemporary m/m fiction is overhyped, poorly written, and devastatingly boring. The stories in this book, however, are without fault. A great writing style, good narrative hooks, amazing character interactions, and balanced endings is all I ask for in short stories.

What I liked most is the author's ability to recognize that not all stories can be stretched out to a novel's length, and that its better to write a couple of great novellas than one terrible novel. Oh, how I wish more authors understood that! I highly recommend these stories and I am planning to read more from this author.

Great short stories

I really enjoyed these short stories. The characters were flawed but real. The plots were great though I wish a couple of them were longer.
