Brian K. Vaughan is the writer and co-creator of comic-book series including SAGA, PAPER GIRLS, Y THE LAST MAN, RUNAWAYS, and most recently, BARRIER, a digital comic with artist Marcos Martin about immigration, available from their pay-what-you-want site www.PanelSyndicate.com
BKV's work has been recognized at the Eisner, Harvey, Hugo, Shuster, Eagle, and British Fantasy Awards. He sometimes writes for film and television in Los Angeles, where he lives with his family and their dogs Hamburger and Milkshake.
It's been so long since I've read Saga, but I am back at it again because I just really missed the characters and the uber cute narrator.
Anyways, here are my thoughts so far:
➟ Seems that Marko and Alana are having a falling out. Which sucks because I like them both. ➟ Baby Hazel is a bit bigger now. Enough to give Marko and Alana a headache. ➟ Alana seem to have had some peer pressure at work ➟ Seems that Prince Robot IV has finally snapped ➟ Princess Robot is... ➟ Little Prince Robot is... ➟ Let's just say the royal Robot family has just been fucked.
It's been a while and I still can't shake the sad feelings from #19
I have to admit that I understand how the characters might make the decisions they are making, but I see nothing good coming from this, and it's breaking my fucking heart.
Also we get new characters and possibilities, and the story continues to develop.
It's so funny because whenever there's a hiatus, I totally get lulled into this happy space where I'm just so ecstatic to have a new SAGA that I forget how much of an emotional roller-coaster this can be.
1. Seriously, Fiona Staples is the best opening page artist I've ever known. Granted, I don't know a lot of artists. But seriously, every time I open SAGA, I go through an entire range of emotions: lust, surprise, embarrassment, amazement. It's overwhelming, and usually sexy as hell. This was no exception.
2. Alana on fadeaway....I LOVE THAT PAGE!!!! Omg I want that blown up and on my wall. It was soooooooo pretty and the art totally captured the feeling of surrendering to the moment. I want that page SO BAD.
3. Can see the writing on the wall with Marko. Poor guy. I mean, like, I can see how this arc seems like it's going to actually explore the idea of Alana and Marko as a real couple. Real parents. Real real real. And the real changes that every couple faces when the relationship changes from idealistic romanticism to mundane realism. While being on the run together, a unit standing strong against a world that doesn't want them to even exist, does a lot to reinforce the bonds forged by the acts necessary to maintain survival; the question of whether or not they can survive the regular working life of two newlyweds who are also recent parents is starting to arise. Alana is living her dream, losing sight of Marko in the process. Marko, feeling neglected while being a full time dad, is finding comfort in the subtle attentions of that teacher. And I can see where the day to day is starting to creep in.
4. But it's too early for BKV to break all of our hearts, right? Like....it's too early for that, right? Only issue #20!
5. But holy shit, not too early for the Robots, isn't it?! Holy fuck, while she's actually holding her little baby, dude?! Dammit that was cold.
Another awesome episode, though it seems like most of the action surrounding our star-crossed lovers is happening on the periphery, while BKV takes this arc to deconstruct what happens to a relationship once the tragic romance is replaced by day-to-day life. How selfish we all are, and self-sacrificing to our own detriment. I wonder if they'll be able to root out the seeds being planted right now or if we'll watch for several arcs those fleurs de mal sprouting up between them. And what happens if they have nothing outside the running, the hiding, the gallant gestures and noble defenses? What happens when the biggest threat to their love is actually having no threat at all?

Although I love this series, the last few episodes have not really moved things along. We finally get back to some action, and maybe dancing too. Hazel and her morning craziness is too funny.
The cover of this issue is one of my very favorites. I love the quiet moment of father and daughter.
The end scene is awesome.
I like that things look like they are headed for major changes.
I love how Vaughn and Staples develop Hazel as a character. Even though she’s the narrator, most of the action and intrigue involves pretty much everyone other than Hazel. How exciting could a toddler be when there’s an intergalactic war going on??
But in little details - her movements, her first sentences, how she reacts to things - we get a window into Hazel growing up. Strip everything else away and, at its core, Saga is about a baby becoming a toddler becoming a…
So the description for this issue simply states: "Something terrible happens." And I'm thinking. . .REALLY??!! Have we not already had our bubbles burst with the foreshadowing from #19??!! Guess not, huh? Yeah. And you know what? Something terrible DID, in fact, happen. It wasn't what I thought it would be, but it was indeed terrible nonetheless. My heart stuttered a bit. And I kept going back and forth between those two pages, willing myself to believe the images I was looking at, and to accept the finality of them.
But as for our main characters, I have an eerie and unsettling feeling where Vaughan is steering the plot. I don't think that I like it. I understand it because that is the essence of human nature (or, alien nature, as the case may be). But I still don't like it. Because in the end, the one who will suffer the most from her parents' decisions is Hazel. And I hate that for that cute-ass little girl.
It's extremely difficult to rate the individual chapters, therefore the following is a review of the fourth volume. In other words, chapters nineteen through twenty-four.
Saga volume four gives us chapters nineteen to twenty-four, and it’s pulled the solid four-star rating from me that I knew the series was capable of. In fact, volume four has pushed me into the realm of back-to-back reading. The moment I finished volume four, volume five appeared in my hand.
I’m at the stage where I’m hooked, addicted, and in desperate need of more.
By this point in Saga, I’m in love with all the strange and wonderful things being offered. I’m lost to the universe we’ve been introduced to, I’m desperate for more of the wonderful storylines developing, and I’m overly invested in the characters.
Despite how strange this one is – and I know it will not be for everyone due to this – it’s a story that leaves you desperate for more. Once you start, you cannot stop.
Without a doubt, this is an addiction I’m happy to have.
Just what the hellllllll of an ending? Whole multiple pages of a cliffhanger and an ending. Will be continuing the next issues after a short break despite the fact that I want to keep on going but need to read another book so let's go and Keep on Reading.
I have always loved comics, and I can and I have. I love comics to bits, may the comics never leave my side. I loved reading this and love reading more. You should also read what you love, and I hope you will always love it. Even though I grew up reading local Indian comics like Raj Comics, Diamond Comics, or even Manoj Comics, now's the time to catch up on international and classic comics, Mangas, Mahwas, and Graphic novels. I am on my quest to read as many comics as I just want to Keep on Reading.
Writer: Brian K. Vaughan Artist: Fiona Staples Publisher: Image Comics Release Date: May 2014 Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5)
Summary: Time has passed since the family’s split. Hazel now lives with her grandmother while her parents follow separate paths. Both Alana and Marko struggle to rebuild their lives, haunted by what they’ve lost.
Review: A strong opening to a new phase. The time jump gives the story fresh perspective without losing emotional continuity. Vaughan’s writing shows quiet heartbreak rather than melodrama, and Staples’ art remains exceptional — soft, expressive, and cinematic.
More of a 3.5 star rating; I’ll be honest, I’m not sure what to think of Prince Robot IV’s stint at what I can only describe as a brothel. A part of me feels like it’s his head trauma toying with his memory so he doesn’t remember his family, but another part of me there’s a small twist with him that just isn’t revealed yet. Seeing the new mother die in such a way was very sad to see, and it made me feel sympathetic towards her even though we never got much revealed for her character. Lastly, I do not trust the dance teacher around Marko and hope that Marko separating from Alana is more of a literal/physical thing than an emotional thing since I love them together.

She goes to work, is the only breadwinner of the family, while he stays at home and feels sorry for himself? Why can’t he work too, and gran can take care of Hazel? That would make things easier for Alana....but noooo. Marko is turning into a looser.
Saga #20: •Alana got high as a kite. •One of the serfs killed Princess Robot and took away the young prince. •Prince Robot IV is in Sextillion and Mama Sun is using him. •Marko is dancing with the bat woman and call himself "Barr".
