Charles de Lint is the much beloved author of more than seventy adult, young adult, and children's books. Renowned as one of the trailblazers of the modern fantasy genre, he is the recipient of the World Fantasy, Aurora, Sunburst, and White Pine awards, among others. Modern Library's Top 100 Books of the 20th Century poll, conducted by Random House and voted on by readers, put eight of de Lint's books among the top 100. De Lint is a poet, folklorist, artist, songwriter and performer. He has written critical essays, music reviews, opinion columns and entries to encyclopedias, and he's been the main book reviewer for The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction since 1987. De Lint served as Writer-in-residence for two public libraries in Ottawa and has taught creative writing workshops for adults and children in Canada and the United States. He's been a judge for several prominent awards, including the Nebula, World Fantasy, Theodore Sturgeon and Bram Stoker.
Born in the Netherlands in 1951, de Lint immigrated to Canada with his family as an infant. The family moved often during de Lint's childhood because of his father's job with an international surveying company, but by the time Charles was twelve—having lived in Western Canada, Turkey and Lebanon—they had settled in Lucerne, Quebec, not far from where he now resides in Ottawa, Ontario.
In 1980, de Lint married the love of his life, MaryAnn Harris, who works closely with him as his first editor, business manager and creative partner. They share their love and home with a cheery little dog named Johnny Cash.
Charles de Lint is best described as a romantic: a believer in compassion, hope and human potential. His skilled portrayal of character and settings has earned him a loyal readership and glowing praise from peers, reviewers and readers.
Charles de Lint writes like a magician. He draws out the strange inside our own world, weaving stories that feel more real than we are when we read them. He is, simply put, the best. —Holly Black (bestselling author) Charles de Lint is the modern master of urban fantasy. Folktale, myth, fairy tale, dreams, urban legend—all of it adds up to pure magic in de Lint's vivid, original world. No one does it better. —Alice Hoffman (bestselling author)
To read de Lint is to fall under the spell of a master storyteller, to be reminded of the greatness of life, of the beauty and majesty lurking in shadows and empty doorways. —Quill & Quire
His Newford books, which make up most of de Lint's body of work between 1993 and 2009, confirmed his reputation for bringing a vivid setting and repertory cast of characters to life on the page. Though not a consecutive series, the twenty-five standalone books set in (or connected to) Newford give readers a feeling of visiting a favourite city and seeing old friends. More recently, his young adult Wildlings trilogy—Under My Skin, Over My Head, and Out of This World—came out from Penguin Canada and Triskell Press in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Under My Skin won 2013 Aurora Award. A novel for middle-grade readers, The Cats of Tanglewood Forest, published by Little Brown in 2013, won the Sunburst Award, earned starred reviews in both Publishers Weekly and Quill & Quire, and was chosen by the New York Times Editors as one of the top six children's books for 2013. His most recent adult novel, The Mystery of Grace (2009), is a fascinating ghost story about love, passion and faith. It was a finalist for both the Sunburst and Evergreen awards.
De Lint is presently writing a new adult novel. His storytelling skills also shine in his original songs. He and MaryAnn (also a musician) recently released companion CDs of their original songs, samples of which can be heard on de Lin
A satisfying ending to an excellent trilogy. One of the best I've read in a while. Right up there with Red Rising & Hunger Games, but totally different and unique.
If you want to see the difference between Canadians and Americans, read this trilogy. Just change the surfboards to snowboards, put the characters in coats and scarves half the time - okay, 3/4 of the time - and substitute Mounties for FBI... um, maybe that wouldn't work, the Mounties have a very different rap - but hey, these FBI agents behave more like Mounties than stereotypical FBI opponents. So what do you have? Polite kids who don't want to kill anyone, working to convince good and bad guys alike that we can all live together despite our differences in a nice mosaic (not a melting pot) - Canadian, eh?
Plenty of action, complex characters, and a unique plot also make this simply a darn good, can't-put-down story.
There's one bit that's *sad* -- my silly dog (on the bed facing away from me) kept looking at me over her shoulder (god forbid she moves her butt) like "What's WRONG with YOU?"
This is definitely the kind of book I'd stay up all night reading! I still remember how sad I was when I reached the end of Moonheart - it's the first Charles de Lint book I read. I wasn't sad because the book was sad or disappointing; I was sad because it was over. You know, when you feel like your best friend is moving away? Well, the only time I don't feel that way after one of his books is when I know the book is part of a series and that there will be more to come.
This is the third in The Wildings trilogy and, while I liked them all, this one was maybe my favorite. It was sort of a coming of age story for the four main characters that I've come to love. Josh has learned to control his temper and be a bit more diplomatic; Marina has learned to be true to herself and keep her integrity; Des has learned that he can always depend on his friends - and they on him - even when they're far apart; and lastly, Theo has learned that he is more than "Chaingang". Where will it all take them? I can only hope that Mr. de Lint writes another book to let us know where they end up!
While still excellent, and still engaging, this was my least-favorite of the trilogy. I'm not sure why, actually...I shall ponder this, and possibly get back with you on it. STILL VERY WORTH READING, if you are lover of de Lint's work, as I am.
At last the final book in the Wildlings series. There is a resolution to the whole Josh situation, and we see him and his friends make tough mature decisions. The whole parallel worlds and moving between them is explained more thoroughly.
Each chapter is clearly marked with those viewpoint the story is being narrated by which makes it easy to understand. No character delays the plot by repetition of what another character has already said. (A lot of authors do make that mistake!)
All in all I was happy with the places de Lint left the characters. Things they could resolve at that time were resolved, and bigger things which needed more time for the character to deal with, were pointed at as possible paths for that character.
A nice read. I would recommend buying the whole Wildlings trilogy in one go if you haven't read them, as the story continues where the last book left off.
I rarely think of reading the Kindle, but I need “the book” emitting light itself, rather than relying on electric lights that hurt my eyes. The ability to make the font larger is also welcome.
Even more welcome: to be able to read one of my favorite writers, a novel I forgot I had, this writer's characters and situations will always make me feel good. This book’s plot follows the characters directly from Book 2, which I barely remember, but I knew being with Charles de Lint’s characters would be just what I needed.
Josh, who turns into a mountain lion, is in an Otherworld with Cory discovering his abilities. He’s also looking for his ex Elzie. His friend Des and his girlfriend who turns into a coati mundi go to the Otherworld to rescue Marina, who turns into an otter. Marina has gone to the Otherworld to escape a pack of hunting dogs and winds up saving the day. (To be fair, Josh helps.)
EVen though De Lint is known for his apt handling of stand-alone novels and loosely grouped thematic stories, this first true attempt at a trilogy is well done. The longer story arc did nothing to dimish the intense characterization, and the individual plots of each novel built well upon each other as the series continued. While each novel had a unique flavour and driving motifs, the spread of the overarching themes was still present in each and allowed De Lint to build them carefully before the conclusion. The series could have worked as a single book, but I think that they made a good choice in allowing each book to stand alone.
Charles De Lint is hands-down my favorite writer, and he did not disappoint in the conclusion of the Wildings series. I have to admit that I wasn't entirely sold on the premise to begin with as it seemed like a version of the X-Men...but I should have known better. The characters are what drives this story, and they are characters who are real and relatable. The characters drive the action, and the heart underlying the story connects them both. At the heart of this series is an emphasis on caring about each other and the places we live. I highly recommend this for readers of all ages. De Lint is a master, and I am glad that this series continued his tradition of writing wonderful stories.

The final book of Charles de Lint's Wildling Trilogy Out of This World does not disappoint! Once again this skilled writer has created a magical universe, endearing characters and an engaging plot. I certainly hope he will write more books in this new world!
Love this trilogy from the first page till the very last word! To be honest at the end I kinda threw the book into the wall - was too furious for what Mr.DeLint did to the main character. But then decided to read till the end and thanx for that! The ending is just perfect! Bitter sweet. Among so many book series this is one of the best and most beloved. Such characters! What a story!
