If you like reading about people drinking coffee and thanking God for every move they make then this is for you.
Here we have the whole Wiley family together for Christmas.. all are now married, most with children, and the whole book is of them doing average joe stuff. Oh sure we have a horse race, a couple of bad guys who aren't really bad guys, a difficult birth that gets fixed in a paragraph and an ending that doesn't end, but forces you to buy the next book to find the answer.
Except...
I don't care... I wont be buying the next one.
Too Godly Too Clean No conflict No believability
I did like the characters.. too bad the were put in such boring circumstances.
Oh and BTW Chapter 15... the date is wrong. Says January should be December. Way to go editors!
4,75 stars. Brothers who take care for one and other. I is a theme witch is coming back in many novels but surtenly in this one. It is at the west frontier where men and women had to built up a life. They build with there hands and loved with their hearts. Hardship was a part of their lives but love is a mutch more strong emotion. 4 brothers will come together at christmas and have to face part of the past from one of their wives. And than the trouble with childbirth. A big issue in that time. History is well woven in the storyline. I realy enjoyed this novel. It is part of a series but can be read separately.
I just love the way the big family was I interwoven throughout the story while remaining true to the main characters. The action and bad guys fantastic without over shadowing the love of family.
Excellent author and storyteller. This was the first book by Wiley I had read. When I read it I knew it wouldn't be the last. Love a book I cannot put down once I started reading it.
I will start by saying that I did not particularly enjoy this book. I just finished reading it and am still wondering what it was about. There was no plot to speak of, the characters were flat, and it needs another trip to the editor.
There are many characters in it; all of them are brothers, their wives, and children. I liked that part. They're all on their way to the eldest brother's house for Christmas and a series of unfortunate events happen to all of them, especially Sam, who is the heir to a mountain back in New Hampshire.
Everything seemed to revolve around Sam. I get it. I think he was supposed to be the hero of the story, but frankly, Bear upstaged him. I was far more interested in Bear than any of the others. He was the best developed character of any of them.
Timing was another issue for me. Not the era. It was the timing around child birth and having sex afterward. The timeline seemed off. It seems as if the entire story took place in just a matter of two or three weeks, including the time before giving birth. I've given birth to two children. I was nowhere near ready to have any sort of sexual relations with my husband that soon afterward. It seemed disingenuous that Catherine would be dressing in finery so soon after giving birth, too. Mothers, you know what I'm talking about.
It pains me to say anything negative. I know how hard authors work on their stories, but this didn't cut it for me. While I was reading it, I consistently thought of "The Little House on the Prairie" books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, which I read when I was twelve years old. Take the scene from Walnut Grove to Kentucky, turn Pa Ingalls into Sam Wyllie, throw in a few more characters, and you've got yourself an overlong episode of Little House with a few love scenes that were actually well-written. However, I thought the last love scene in the book was gratuitous and had no bearing on the story at all.
Is it a coincidence that the last name of the family in the book is the same as the author's, only with a different spelling? There isn't a problem with that. I've just never seen it before. It makes me wonder if a lot of the story, or maybe all of it, is based on family history. There's always some truth in fiction.
I did not enjoy the book, but that isn't to say others won't.
My review was originally posted on Romancing-the-Book.com and is shown below:
This is the fifth book in Wiley’s American Wilderness series and it did not disappoint. This book opens with its prologue in 1799 in Kentucky where all of the story takes place except that it’s set in different locations. The prologue seamlessly brings us up to speed and flawlessly picks up where the last book left off.
This is Catherine and Sam’s story but it is really a story of all the Wyllies. We are reunited with brothers Sam, William, Stephen and Bear and their wives and families and enough background is given if this is the first book of Wiley’s that you pick up that you won’t feel lost. The love and affection they feel for one another is strong and flows through to the reader. It was nice to see Kelly’s father, Rory, have a major role in the story. There are many twists and turns, some dark moments and others lighthearted, but such is the life in the wilderness. Kentucky is still a rough place and there are a lot of dangerous characters looking to make a quick buck at other’s expense. The womenfolk once again show that they are definitely forces to be reckoned with and that they will survive especially with their men folk at their sides. We get to learn more about Artis, Bear’s wife, and I love everything about her. She fits right in to the family and captures their hearts along with Bear’s. There were once again wonderful descriptions of the land, the animals, the homes and the relationships between friends and foe. The scenery was often breathtaking. The story flowed from page to page and had family and friends, fear, undesirables, danger, fights, weapons, good guys and bad, heartache and happiness along with tears, kidnappings, dreams, racing, hard work, food, romance and love. There was a happily ever after and nice closure and the epilogue tied up loose ends and was the icing on the cake.
Wiley is one of my favorite new authors and each book I read cements it even more. I love her accurate portrayal of the settling of the American Frontier, one of my favorite times in history, and also how her characters are so real. I was thrilled to find out that the series will continue with a sixth book that I can’t wait to read – even if it doesn’t come out until 2016. Bravo for another job well done, Ms. Wiley!
Favorite Quote: ..He quickly selected an assortment of toys and even found a pretty hair comb for Kelly. After all, she would always be his little girl, even if she was married and had a child of her own.
Dorothy Wiley's fifth book, FRONTIER GIFT OF LOVE, is, as all of her others, a story to savor. The richness of her descriptions of the Kentucky wilderness and the courageous people who worked and fought to carve a new life for themselves draws you in from the very beginning. In this book, the reader receives an additional treat; Ms. Wiley brings all of the main characters from her first four books together once again to celebrate Christmas as one large extended family.
But everything is not simple and pleasant. Catherine's pregnancy is not going well. It seems she and the baby may not survive its birth. On top of that, vicious strangers come to Sam and Catherine's home demanding that he sign over the deed to family land back in New Hampshire. When Sam does not do so, the men try to force his hand by committing vile acts against his family. As if that weren't enough, winter has set in with a vengeance, making travel for family members as well as a midwife and much-needed doctor perilous at best. Will all of their family make it safely to Sam and Catherine's home? Will the hazardous weather keep Catherine from receiving the medical care she so desperately needs? Will the ruthless strangers murder Sam or members of his family to get what they want?
As with all her books, Ms. Wiley's FRONTIER GIFT OF LOVE includes intense action, adventure, and romance. The reader is truly drawn into the feel of danger and fear, the immediacy and possibility of Catherine and the child's death, and Sam's courageous fight to save them. This story holds the reader's interest with heart pounding action and, in the end, enfolds the reader in enduring love, leaving a warm glow in the reader's heart. This book is to be enjoyed over and over again!
Dorothy Wiley’s newest book in her series is a timeless and exciting story that stays true to her frontier series theme, tastefully unfolding heated passion and romance, coupled with evil villains and resilient heroes. While staying true to her theme, she also delivers new dimensions in the characters we love. This beautifully written story quickens your heart and doesn’t let go. It is refreshing read that makes you feel the importance of unbreakable strong family ties. I was drawn in immediately and intrigued by the plot and was amazed at how artfully Ms. Wiley neatly managed the colorful cast of all of her characters in one book. Her book both fills you with tension and wraps you in warmth. Ms. Wiley skillfully portrays the passion and strength of her characters while at the same time reveals their inner most vulnerabilities. Captain Sam’s struggle to keep Catherine and his baby alive and the family’s strong bonds keep you wanting more after each chapter. Her story captures how fleeting life can be and how precious it really was in the pioneering days of Kentucky. I thoroughly enjoyed the book’s special events and surprises along with its unpredictable twists and turns. It will not disappoint and will leave you hungry for the next one. Read it, enjoy it, and then make it a gift for someone you love.
This is another exciting story in this wonderful series. It is full of excitement, tense moments, being with family and lots of love. Once you start reading you can't put it down. The writer takes you to a time in our history that was still wild in the frontier. Old friends and family are in the book and it makes you feel like you know them and are part of the story. It will have you holding your seat, laughing, crying and loving every minute of it. I highly recommend this book. It is a great stand alone book in this series, but you might want to start with book one if you haven't seen the beginning of the family story. Well researched and written!
I thought it would never end. The author took a very good story and dragged it out to the point I wanted to put the book down and not finish it which is very unusual for me. The book was too wordy. She could have left off at least a hundred pages. At one point a sister-in-law read a story to all the children on Christmas Eve. All she had to do was tell us that but Ms. Wiley chose to put the entire story in the book. That came across as trying to make the book longer. It worked but I was put off by it. In the end she made a decent book boring.
Way too wordy. Could have been half as long. Author did a good job of telling readers about the characters but you really should read the other books to gather all the background of the complex family. In this book, there was too much made over the bad guys who wanted the mountain but it was just a small piece of the story. We get that the husbands loved their wives and didn't need to be told every 2-3 pages.
I love each book in this series. It is well written and gets better with each book. The characters are wonderful and the values are inspirational. Our world needs more people like these men and women. Please continue with the trip to Boston and New Hampshire. I await with breathless anticipation. HIGHLY recommended!!!
This story really grew on me with each page I read. I loved the family involved with the love and sacrifices they made for each other. The family unity was so strong.
When your family is coming together for the holiday and there are men trying to hurt you. You know you are not alone because each with come to your defense.
This is a difficult one to review, I say that because I read the one after this one before this book,
Sam has an adopted son Little John, his wife is due to give birth at any time. There seems to be some difficult issues. She is having pains not related to birth, it seems the child is large and breached. The baby must turn into position or they both could die. Sam has unwelcome guests. He has to shoot one of the men who draws his gun at Sam but same is quicker. The reason the guest came is to buy his land he tells them no and makes them leave.
Little John is kidnapped! When they catch up with the guys they get loose and kidnapped another family member!
This story has many characters who are all related. I think it’s an okay book once you catch up with everything. In my opinion the book does bounce back and forth with the brothers. So you do get to hear about some of them but leaves you wondering what else is going on.
Sam and Catherine Wyllie are building their home...and their family...in 1799 frontier now known as the Commonwealth of Kentucky. It's nearing Christmas, and they are expecting their firstborn child, who will become a stepbrother to a child they've adopted. Sams premonition about the riders who came up to their cabin, demanding he sign over his land in Vermont to a wealthy businessman, prove to be right. They kdnap his stepson, whom he loves dearly, after he refuses to do so. They attack his family who are coming for a visit at Christmas. Catherine is having last minute issues with her pregnancy, possibly facing a breech birth. , So begins the latest installment of the story of the Wyllies of Kentucky. I like this historical fiction series, based loosely on her husband's ancestors. It is authentic in its description of life in frontier America, and it flows as you read it.
This book was full of adventure Ponderosa style with a good dose of romance and a coup!e of scenes nearly x-rated. The story kept me entertained with plenty of details woven throughout. I can't wait to read the other books in this series. That said, I was tempted to give this book three stars based on the inordinate number of typos and/or word omissions. Ms Wiley, I would think you would take better care of your hard work than to hand it off to unqualified people to produce. I know it takes a lot of going back and forth to make changes, but so many errors should not happen to begin with. Readers deserve better. I for one would rather wait for a new title than to receive inferior product. Thank you.
This frontier romance story takes place in 1799 in Kentucky. Captain Sam Wyllie and his wife Catherine are expecting a baby. The unborn child may not survive, and perhaps not even Catherine. Sam does his best to save them, but at the same time heavily armed men arrive wanting him to sell his property in New Hampshire, Wyllie Mountain. They are determined to get Sam to sign over the deed. This novel is heart-pounding and very emotional. Excellently created and written. Travel with Sam and Catherine on this thrilling journey of survival and love. Highly recommend.
I can't believe this book brings the family together
I loved this book. I enjoy every turn of the page. I have had so many emotions reading this book and the whole series. I am so happy Ms Wiley brings a book where we get to see the family together again. There are so many wonderful characters and I love that we get to revisit those we love. The key to a good series is to keep the reader engaged and this series draws you in and keeps you totally drawn in and feel to be part of the story. The reader can't but wonder what life was like during pioneer days and wonder if you were born then would you have survived? Enjoy every minute of these stories. On to the next book!
This story revolves around the life and love of Samuel and Catherine. Sam, the sheriff of Boonesborough, had adopted his young nephew when he was orphaned as a young child. Sam needed a mother for John, and fell in love with Catherine when they met in Boonesborough, and they provided a loving home for John. Read this story to learn about Catherine's life of privilege, but also her life of domination by her father, who forced her to marry a man she could never love.
I can't believe I've never read anything by this author before and this will NOT be the last! This story has everything; action, adventure, corrupt scoundrels and unending love. Their is so much in between the covers you will stay up late trying to finish it. I may have overslept this morning but I will never admit it (lol). Definitely have to go back to book one and read the series~
I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobook of this title. (Audible Membership)
A story of unscrupulous men and how far they are prepared to go to get wealth. Then, on the other hand, a family who understands hardship, helping each other, and doing your best, no matter the odds against you.
Although the author has a series of stories about one family, they can be read standalone, which makes for a great introduction to the family and their travails in the newly settled frontier of America. Awesome character development and strong storylines keep the books coherent and flowing. Definitely worth jumping into a new series.
Enjoyed the book very much. Enjoyed the setting and the book captured the love of all their Feelings of all the family members. Was nice to see the love between brothers.
Such a well written Book, from the beginning your drawn into a Family Life and Love. This is a Deep Love Story that touches the Heart. A Child is kidnapped! How dare this happen.I give this 5🌟
