Humanity stands on the brink of annihilation. Dragons fill the skies.
Ever since the Breaking, when earthquakes tore the world apart and unleashed the nightmares of myth and legend, humankind has struggled for survival.
Caleb is one of the survivors, and the only thing he cares about is getting revenge on the monsters that killed his wife and son. When he saves the life of a dverger—a mythic dwarf-like creature—Caleb discovers that the Breaking may have brought good to the world along with the evil.
On the other side of the country, Eric leads a small group of survivors in relative prosperity until a powerful war hammer is forced into his hands—a weapon with a will of its own so commanding that it sends Eric on a mission with one purpose: destroy the creatures that threaten his home.
Caleb and Eric must each decide to do something no one has dared before: to battle the Dragonlords.

He's owned over 300 guinea pigs at the same time, been nationally ranked as a guinea pig breeder, played duets through his nose on recorders to the embarrassment of many, and lived without air conditioning for almost 2 years.
Kevin owes his publishing debut to a kindly librarian back in the 6th grade, the LTUE Symposium, a purple shirt, and a passing editor who didn't mind some mild sarcasm. His books have been Utah Book Awards finalists, Whitney Award Nominees, and #1 bestsellers on Amazon.
He currently resides in Utah with his amazing wife and two wonderful children. He's still writing and continuing a lifelong quest to become a dragon rider.
There is so much going on in this book. The world has completely changed and humans are introduced to dragons, dwarves (kind of), and other creatures; some good, some bad, and some horrible. After learning to survive, this story follows two humans as they struggle to reclaim their world, with some unlikely help.
This is part one in a series, so there are a lot of loose ends, but also some exciting possibilities.
This was my first read of Urban Fantasy and I loved it. I received this book in exchange for a review. I really loved reading how Earth had been invaded by creatures from a magical world and their epic battle between good and evil was spilling into our world! I liked the human protagonists. I liked that the setting was familiar and strange all at the same time. I definitely look forward to reading the sequel!!
One day life is grand. The very next day something unpredictable and unimaginable happens. What would you do if it were you? Would you stay and fight or would you hide? These are the questions the characters ask themselves as their adventures take shake shape. This is the first book in the Successive Harmony series.
There are several mystical creatures, but they have very real human characteristics. There are a few I would love to know. My favorite character is Sigvid. He reminds me of myself sometimes. He does not take any lip from anyone, but shows how he cares in a very subtle way. My favorite part of the book is when the baby white dragon was about to be born. Its dad went to find her rider. Cannot say what happens, but it is awesome. I actually laughed out loud when the Dvengers interacted with a flashlight. Sounds silly I know but it was funny. There were parts in the story where I could feel the pain from one of the main characters. At first it was a little confusing. There is a small backstory but some elements of what happened are missing until you read more of the book. I can honestly say I did not see the end of Chapter 2 coming. Once you think you have the story line where you think you know what will happen next, there is a twist. It flows wonderfully to keep you reading though.
This book reminds me of the Lord of the Rings and Resident Evil. If you like these types then you will enjoy this one. I would recommend this for young teens to adults. I kind of wish the ending was different but being a cliffhanger just makes me wish the second book was out. I cannot wait to see what the second book is like, if there is a second book.

Great story ideas...just wish there had been better execution and organization of those ideas.
There are several interesting stories going on throughout this book. If it had been told from only 1 or 2 perspectives and the links between those characters were clear throughout at least a majority of the book, it would have been at better.
The story felt very ADHD, jumping all around between characters and timelines without clearly laid patches between them. I
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. If I had not committed to reading the whole book and providing a review I wouldn't have gotten further than about the first third of the book. It jumped around so much that I found it rather frustrating.
And if I had not persevered to read the whole book I would have missed the best part which is the last few chapters of the book.
The author clearly has a great imagination. There is no question there. I just think he needs better organization and flow for his writing. I look forward to his next book in hopes that he will have matured a bit in his writing.
I received my copy of Resurgent Shadows as a free giveaway through Good reads.
My 4 star is really a 3.5 star rating. Interesting story, well developed setting, the world taken over by Orc-ish, Dwarf-ish etc. beings was believable as were the various locations in the novel. Characters were often sympathetic despite the violence and carnage.
What brings it down from a 4 star is that the chapters jumped from one character's story line to another. Common literary technique which is usually quite effective. For me, in Resurgent Shadows, it just made me frustrated and annoyed since it seemed to be too scattered to easily follow.
So 3.5. Good read to finish, but no desire to read number 2 in the series.

Very interesting and intriguing story. A fun blend of different lore. Unfortunately, it is a bit scatterbrained which made in hard for me to read in big chunks. Another deterrent was the ridiculous number of grammatical issues. It just got worse as I kept reading. The ending felt a little rushed, but I enjoyed it.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. It just doesn't seem like it is done yet.
Jumps around between characters and timelines, making it difficult to easily follow characters. The two humans struggle, with help,to regain their world. It has good twists and turns, with suspense, to keep story interesting.
