No Strings Attached by Julie Moffett
Lexi Carmichael mystery series #8. Should be read in series order for character development. STEM.
Lexi intercepts a computer code issue for the NSA and she becomes the target of international killers. Lexi, Slash, and friends work to foil the killers and protect the nation.

Killers, shooting, agents, guns and wedding dress fittings. What a week for Lexi and her friends. All while she’s supposed to be best maid and planning a wedding shower. FBI protection duty in the bridal shop and opening Champaign is not a good mix. Just wait for the actual shower bit don’t eat the lasagna!
Kind of ridiculous the number of things that happen to Lexi but she’s learning life and has great friends. A great adventure.

No Strings Attached is my very first book by author Julie Moffett. I was a bit nervous reading this book for a couple of reasons. One - I am normally not a mystery reader. The blurb looked interesting and since no books in my preferred genre were demanding my attention, I thought I would try something different. Two - and this one is the biggie, I was jumping into a series that is well established. It can be very hit or miss not starting with a series from the beginning. Lucky for me, not only did I thoroughly enjoy the book but I also had no problem keeping up.

I should have guessed from the blurb this was going to be a first person POV story. Some people have a problem with that, I don't. Everything is from Lexi, who I adored. She's a smart cookie in a geeky computer nerd kind of way. Her friends and boyfriend were also completely likable as well. The plot line I had no problem keeping up with. I did have a sense that there were a few backstory plots I missed out on but instead of feeling lost, those plots had me wanting to go back to start the series from the beginning. Coming from me who normally does not read mysteries, that is saying a lot.

There were (to me at least) two separate plot lines going on in this book. First, you have cyber criminals half. Lexi is in the wrong place at the right time and intercepts a hack into the NSA. The majority of the story revolves around this. There's quite a bit of suspense to be had as Lexi, Slash and her Scooby crew rush to solve the mystery. People are getting killed, there a mole within the agency, and a rush to stop the hackers before it's all too late. All of it was very exciting and kept me on the edge of my seat playing the whodunit game. Not sure if I had read the series all along I would have figured it out earlier. I'd like to thing no.

Now for the second plot - the bachelorette party. Lexi's best girl friend, Basia, is getting married to her best boy friend, one of the Zimmerman twins so not only is she the maid of honor but she is also planning the bachelorette party all while she is trying to sort the out hack chaos. Oh. My. God. Between the bridal shop and the actually bachelorette party, I could not stop LAUGHING! It was a toss-up which one was the bigger comedy of errors but it doesn't matter. Lexi has a big black cloud of bad luck hanging over her head and it rears its vicious head no matter how hard she tries.

I may have started reading No Strings Attached with reservations, but I finished it with a huge smile on my face. Not only did it work out very well as a stand-alone but now I find myself wanting more Lexi. This was quite the entertaining read for me. Not only will I be recommending it but I will also be looking to read more from Julie Moffett.

I received this book from the JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine.

Lexi always finds a way to make me smile. Whether it's with her endearing social awkwardness or the way she unwittingly stumbles into THE WORST situations, I get a kick out of this lady. She's smart and determined and it doesn't matter if she sometimes says the wrong things at the wrong times, she eventually figures things out.

I LIKE THAT!

Smart heroines, man. They do it for me. It doesn't hurt in the slightest that her man is crazy about her and has the training to help her out when things go south. It also doesn't hurt that she has a group of friends who are willing to bend time and space itself (if they could) to help her. She's this goofy, awkward, super smart trouble magnet and it WORKS. I love that she's intelligent enough to see her own limitations and ask for help when she needs it.

*slow nod*

So. This time around, Lexi ends up hip deep in some seriously nasty stuff. Well, wait. That's not uncommon. She ends up in a rough spot, but she has her genius friends and her boo to help her. Between all of them, they're well equipped to handle anything thrown their way. Sure, it's touch and go for a while--especially with that bachelorette party--but THEY HAVE THINGS UNDER CONTROL. Mostly.

Fast-paced and fun, Lexi is going places. Probably dangerous places, but who am I to judge? Besides, she entertains me. So bring on the danger!

There’s something to be said for a comforting series. The sort where each new installment is exciting and you know what you’re mostly going to get but that’s the drawcard. This is such a series for me. To be honest, the previous book was probably for me, the weakest installment but this one? This is definitely one of the best so it was awesome to see such a strong return to form.

Lexi is so much fun and I love that in this book, she really shines. She’s smart, that’s always reinforced in each book but I think this one is the best example of the fact that Lexi can and will step up and lead when she has to. She doesn’t need to play second fiddle to Slash and his amazing coding/hacking abilities, she’s right up there with him and when Slash is incapacitated for part of this book, Lexi effortlessly finishes what the two of them started.

This book also has some great growth for Slash and Lexi’s relationship. Slash’s suggestion of how to deal with the cyber threat doesn’t sit well with Lexi and I think that highlights the differences in their personalities. Lexi is a sunny personality, the light side and she retains that despite all that has happened to her in the previous books. Slash is more a darker personality – which is I think, why he’s drawn to Lexi in the first place. She has that sort of innocence and positive outlook on the world that he needs and the two of them balance each other out very well in this book. They have some really good discussions about their work and the sort of action they might need to take. I have also really enjoyed Lexi’s growing confidence in Slash’s feelings for her and her understanding of how relationships work. She doesn’t seem to require so much assistance from Basia these days to analyse every single thing (thankfully!) and she appears more comfortable with the intimacies of sharing your life with someone. She still queries things and there’s an internal thought process but Slash has gone from someone she was kind of in awe of to her boyfriend. The guy she loves, not an untouchable figure that she can’t quite believe wants to be with her. I really appreciate that their relationship is steady and that there aren’t constant flirtations with other characters or weird break ups and getting back together.

The plot in this one was super fun and involved Lexi doing a lot of things that didn’t feel like as much of a stretch as some other novels (rescuing people in Africa, traipsing through an Indonesian jungle, etc). I found it just as action packed, despite the fact that it all takes place close to home and it just felt like a more accurate reflection of their jobs and Slash’s vague role at the NSA. This book lifted the curtain a little on that and definitely gave a strong idea of what his career might be like moving forward, as well as how their relationship will advance too. I’m not sure how long the series is going to keep pretending that Lexi works with/for Finn, she is hardly ever there! She always manages to get herself involved in something crazy. Finn as a character has really dropped off too but to be honest I don’t think that really matters for the series at all. The core group for me is Lexi, Slash and the Zimmerman twins. I don’t even find Basia a necessary part but given she’s Lexi’s best friend and that she’s marrying a Zimmerman, I’m sure she’ll always continue to be around.

The next installment is due out in January next year (another thing I like, you’re never waiting super long for the next one) and I’m pretty excited about some of the directions that the series has gone in. This one is definitely my favourite and I think, the best written of the series.

I say this for every book by Julie Moffett that I read...I LOVE THIS BOOK. The wonderful characters help make the extremes of the book perfectly plausible. The plot is crafted with a balance of emotion, tension, action, and humor and races at a hold-your-breath pace. I drool or\ver Slash for his sensitive side as much as his hot Italian body or maybe more. I love watching Lexi develop into a bit less of a nerd while remaining a total geek! The humor alone would make the book a winner; oh my, the dress fitting scene had me in tears! I don't think I will ever forget that rose!

“He moved like a ninja. All I could hear was the fading ring in my ears, the rapid beat of my heart and the wail of multiple sirens, all of which were getting louder.”

4 mysterious stars!! Fun, exciting and unique!

Lexi Carmichael has gotten herself in another jam. She’s now the target of a group of cyber criminals because she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. And it just takes off from there! While there are parts where you are left guessing what’s going to happen, there were times I was chuckling, because the pickle that Lexi gets herself in is, at times, quite funny! I was definitely entertained while reading this book. This is the first book I’ve read in the series, but it didn’t stop me from enjoying the book at all!

Can I just say how much I totally love this series?!? Every book gets better and better as you get to know the characters more deeply and watch them adapt and struggle and change. It is one of those series that can be both serious and emotional and still laugh out loud funny. There were definitely a few scenes that had me laughing out loud in inappropriate ( like the doctor's waiting room).

This story has Lexi intercepting a hack into the NSA. Since Slash works for them, she quickly turns to him for help. The seriousness of the hack quickly becomes apparent when murders start to follow and Slash and Lexi find themselves becoming targets. As usual, the twins get pulled in to help out along with some other familiar faces from previous books. In the midst of trying to stop a terrorist plot, Lexi is also trying to plan her friend Basia's bachelorette party, a task which seems somehow harder than facing the terrorists.

I loved this edition to the series, and though I've been on the fence between Elvis and Slash for Lexi (with a slight leaning toward Slash), this book put me solidly in the Slash corner.

I ( quite happily and with much celebration) received an ARC from Net Galley for review.

The Lexi Carmichael-series is one of my favorite series. The stories are very well plotted and crafted and the characters develop over the course of the series. Number 8 already and still going very very strong.

Lexi is attending HACK CON when she stumbles into a situation where it is clear national security is threatened. After an attempt on her life (again!) The situation escalates and soon Lexi and Slash are at it again to save the US against a very real threat, ofcourse with the help of their friends.

During all this, Lexi is still planning Basia's bachelorette party and taking her duties as Maid of honor very seriously. I almost peed my pants laughing so hard at a very particular scene at a bridal shop.

I cannot reveal too much as I received an ARC and I don't want to spoil the story. What I enjoyed was the fact that Lexi and Slash really are center stage in this installment and that their relationship is growing.

Quotes without trying to spoil :-) :

“Wow. I’m not sure what to say. Was there really an ambulance, fire truck and an insurance adjuster involved?” “Unfortunately, yes.”

And:

The attraction of the forbidden. The power of the dark side.

No Strings Attached by Julie Moffett was another entertaining and captivating mystery starring my favorite geek heroine, Lexi Carmichael.

Lexi, Slash, the Zimmerman twins and Basia are all back in this complex mystery that includes "major" hacking skills, a super bad virus, assassinations, kidnapping and a bridal shower that goes quickly out of control. Edge of the seat suspense mixed with love and laughter made this a books I could not put down until I finished it.

Oop's I did it again.... This is not just Lexi's saying but it should be Julie Moffetts as well, because she has done it yet again.

No Strings Attached went above and beyond awesome.

Lexi's little black cloud explodes in this book right from the first page.
Action packed non-stop adventure from the first to the last page.
Cyber security at its best, potential terrorism, potential nuclear fallout, mad men, assassins, FBI, NSA and Lexi can only trust those closet to her, Slash, Elvis, Xavier her brothers Beau and Rock plus her seal mate Hands, these are the guys Lexi knows have her back always.

Lexi got to find her inner depth in this book she analysed everything and did what she had to, I really how she trusted her instincts more and Lexi also identified when to listen to her heart and when to listen to her head, this young woman is such an amazing character.

An enjoyable adventure I will love reading again and again.

I really love this series and this book is no exception. It was exciting and fun with just enough light-hearted moments to balance out the action and serious parts. I love the camaraderie between the characters. Elvis fans will be happy to hear that he has a nice amount of "page time" in this book. Basia and Xavier have less, but they do have a few good scenes. Fans of the series will enjoy this book. While I suppose it *could* be read and enjoyed by someone unfamiliar with the series, I wouldn't recommend starting here as part of what makes this book (and the rest of the series) so special are the relationships developed between all the characters (big or small). Thank you, Julie Moffett, for creating such enjoyable characters and stories!

Oh what to say. I love this series. Hands down favorite heroine ever. This series (an this book) keeps me entertained with the fast paced action, smart herione, drool worthy Slash and a good dose of humor. {spoilers} My husband actually had to stop and ask me what was wrong I was laughing so hard during the scene with Basia trying on her dress {spoilers}. Ms. Moffett is doing an excellent job keeping a series going strong without lapsing into the boredom and repetitiveness that some chic-mysteries get into. If you haven't read this series yet, do your self a favor and start at the beginning. You won't regret it.

This is a very easy to like series with well drawn, fun characters in situations that range from scarily dangerous to utterly absurd. I am listening to the audiobooks and try to separate my like of the writing from my mild dislike of the narrator. The two main characters are Lexi and her BF Slash. Slash is Italian and the narrator absolutely butchers the accent for him. She doesn’t do much better with any of the male voices and I’m tempted to just have Alexa read the ebook instead of going on with these audiobooks. The male voices are all kinds of awful but thankfully Lexi is the narrator and the majority of the story is her voice. I think this series offers a lot of pluses with action, humor, intelligent but not arrogant characters, good secondary characters and amusing plot lines. The last 90 minutes of the book , about the bachelorette party, is a complete waste, adds nothing to the story and seemed like filler for no good reason but the biggest negative for me is the narrator.

Lexi is stressing out of her comfort zone while trying to plan Basia's bachelorette party and juggling speaking engagements at a cyber conference. A wrong place/wrong time happens & suddenly Lexi is being chased and shot at. Investigating the matter, she and Slash find a dangerous hack into the NSA. Who to trust turns everyone on the defense when top brass are murdered. Lexi, Slash, & the Zimmerman twins work to circumvent leaks, battle a foreign adversary, and try and come up with a hack and code to protect the USA. All of this while trying to pull off the perfect bachelorette party and girls night for Basia. Fast paced and full of action and humor.

Exceptionally good book!

I love every one of the Lexi Carmichael books!! I've read them all over 5 times. I think this one may be the best! So many things going on. The main plot is so involved and complex - a lot of research and thought went into it. I loved that characters from a previous book were included. And all the main characters are evolving.
And we get to read all about Xavier and Basis is upcoming wedding and bachelor/bachelorette parties!
Slash and Lexi have to juggle so many crises,it's an exciting book from start to finish!
This series will always be my #1 favorite series.!

Lexi is back in hilarious form! I love the zany things that Lexi does, she really makes me laugh. My poor husband was roused from a deep sleep because I was laughing so much--- I just could not put the book down. The bridal shop antics and the UZI experience had me rolling. Julie Moffett has created such a wonderful group of characters who feel like friends. Don't miss this book!
I have loved all of the books in this series. A big thanks to author Ritter Ames for giving a copy of this book to me as a flash contest prize.

I am glad that I won the goodreads prize book. It opened a new reading series for me. If I could give it 6 stars I would have. It is currently in the news about black/white hacks. You are hooked from the first chase . Trying to solve the mystery was a very good challenge too. As were the antics of Lexi. I can not wait to start reading the rest of this series. There is plenty of romance too. It is well-written with good well rounded characters.

Excellent! Love a good intrigue.

Well I love this book, the storyline, the relationships of the characters and the way they interact with each other. Although, I do wish one thing would’ve gone right for Lexi, the bachelorette party for Basia. I would love to have seen one single thing go perfectly for Lexi - something she did for her longtime friend Basia. Otherwise it was pretty good. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and do recommend it.

This installment in the Lexi Carmichael series continues to provide a great mix of espionage, cyber-threats, comedy and romance. The cast of characters continues to develop, especially Lexi and Slash, and the plots remain interesting but not Byzantine.
