A collection of stories speculating on how human beings could dominate the galaxy, including "Call Him Lord," "The Odd Ones," "Danger, Human," and the title story.
Gordon Rupert Dickson was an American science fiction author. He was born in Canada, then moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota as a teenager. He is probably most famous for his Childe Cycle and the Dragon Knight series. He won three Hugo awards and one Nebula award.
A solid collection of Dickson short stories involving...well...a man from earth in a variety of situations around the galaxy. Its a little hard to parse, as I think a surface read probably communicates a lot resilience on the part of these various men from earth, even an ability to overcome nearly any challenge (with maybe one exception). But I think the point is more that maybe we *shouldn't* overcome these challenges, that the things that made these men so resilient were ultimately negative characteristics. That perhaps the man from earth is a thing to be feared.
I really enjoy Dickson's books, so it was fun to read a collection of his short stories. I loved some of them and even the ones I didn't enjoy as much weren't bad. I would describe his sci-fi as adventure sci-fi without the dense scientific theories. For someone who doesn't read a lot of sci-fi but who loves adventure stories, this is perfect for me.
This is a very readable collection of short stories by Dickson . I am not a fan of short stories but most of these were at least , unlike some of his other collections, upbeat, even whimsical. I much prefer that to the ones that, even though they are short, leave me depressed for days. I would give this a 3.5 if I could.
