If you look up 'shoujo' in the dictionary, there is a picture of this manga right next to it - the misadventures of a pretty and talented, yet also quirky and loud-mouthed high school girl who gets a part time job making wedding gowns at a store run by two unrealistically sexy and, against all odds, heterosexual men in their early twenties... it could not be more shoujo if it tried! I like shoujo, but I'm frankly astonished by how much I enjoyed this book, far more than I expected, since the whole premise seems like it would be painfully boring. Quite the opposite though, by the end of the book I was really involved in Ageha's conflicted feelings and her struggle to prove to both Yukari and herself that she is good enough. Ageha's misunderstanding about her sister's character was really thought provoking. The characters were a bit predictable, but it was more convention than cliche, and they have a great chemistry within the context of the plot. I found myself disappointed that the book had to end - and I look very much forward to reading the next!

Okay, okay, so! This is one of my MANY times reading through this series! And I've got to say, it's fantastic!! It's so readable! You can just fly through these with such ease and eat them all up! I began to notice a pattern when my sister first bought this series with only the first several volumes. I read one...had to go pick up the other instantly. Then I read that one. And then I was after the next one! And before you knew it, I had gotten to the end of all the volumes that had been released in the U.S.! NOOOO! So what ended up happening is that the first time we got a new volume after waiting months for it to be released, I said, "I want to read it from the beginning!" And thus a trend started with this series. Every single time we get a new volume, I end up re-reading the entire series from the beginning! And I never get tired of it! I always have the same thought, and I'm worried when I pick up that first volume again: "Will I be bored of it? I've already read it so many times..." But by the time I muster up to a decision and inevitably open that book and begin reading, I'm swept away ALL OVER AGAIN! *Throws up her arms and laughs!* It is sheerly amazing to me how high a re-read value this series has. Everything is so fresh and enjoyable even on your second, third, fourth--my SIXTH read through!! The characters just don't get old. Somehow, they're timeless for me! But I feel that for such an unknown series, it's a shame, because I know exactly why it's such a fun series to me:

I can relate to it. Completely and perfectly! Sure it has its fairy tale-like resemblance. What girl doesn't dream of herself in that gown, getting married to the perfect man of her dreams? And to be able to work in a place like that--! Wonderful!! But that all aside, this series is charming and beautiful! I remember the first time I picked it up, I kind of blinked at it and turned to my sister and said, "There's not much here. The art style is so simple." I had been used to such overdone mangas, filled with details brimming over in every corner, that V.B. Rose's simplicity caught me off guard, and actually surprised me! *Shakes her head and smiles* But that was completely forgotten by the time I finished the first volume and was thick into the second. The minimality of over-complicating things here only makes everything so much more expressive! The emotions that carry across in the character's faces! The things they say! The way they feel~ Everything comes across so much more intimately because you have them to relate to, instead of being focused on a pretty face.

NOT... to say that Banri Hidaka's art is substandard. I will personally punch the person who says her artwork is anything less than lovely and refined!! And there are so... many...! GORGEOUS scenes in this series! It cannot help but stir your heart or rile the blood! Banri Hidaka in her art is perfectly in harmony as with her storyline. It is so easy to read, so easy to enjoy! And yet the significance and depth of the things she writes about are just as wonderful and flawless, just as elegant and precious as the lighthearted and cracky end of things.

There are a great many number of mangas out there, especially shoujo mangas, but the thing that makes V.B. Rose so memorable to me is that everything, everything is so easy to get into, so beautifully balanced and harmonious with each other. She has a talent for keeping you entertained and keeping you thinking and feeling. And she portrays it absolutely beautifully in this series. I am already looking forward to starting the next volume, and I cannot wait to get to the two volumes I bought last week that are responsible for my sixth read through! *Grins brightly* So come on! Read this one with me! I'm sure you'll love it. <3

Ah! But let me at least say a little bit about the characters. I think I'm going to have to get used to this~ Ageha Shiroi is the main character, a high school student, nonetheless, and yet! I have only one thing to say about her! ...she's a little dumb at first when it comes to others' feelings~ But she grows. *Smiles warmly* You see so much improvement in ALL of the characters throughout this series. You see their relationships get all tangled up and crazy as they try to better themselves and still continue to coexist with everyone else! And it's fantastic to watch that. I love how this book reads like real life. The things that go on in this are just like anyone's situation, if you just knew the right person. And you can pick out qualities in most of the characters that I'm sure you or someone you know has! It's a series that's so down to earth and engaging that it's exciting to see how everyone changes! And Ageha~ This silly, dorky, dedicated girl~ She really does have a lot to learn. *Smiles warmly* But that's the best part: so does everyone else.

Seeing them grow and watching her change even in this first volume from the beginning to the end! I was shocked! And I was happily surprised. So many of the pains and issues that she goes through and the other characters, Yukari and Mitsu, along with the additional ones that will later be introduced, are so much like what I can understand and have gone through. They're normal things...but they teach me so much about not just the characters in this series, but about myself too. *Smiles* Sometimes I wish I had read this when I was younger. Because I feel that if I had...I could have grown a lot more, and righted a lot of mistakes that I had to learn from and live through the hard, hard way. But these characters have to go through those too. *Laughs* And they do such a fantastic job of pulling through, or falling low and in pain... *Smiles gently* ...just like in real life. And yet, they keep going...somehow, they keep going. *Smiles warmly* The more you read, the more you'll see of it. I highly recommend this series. It may not be well known...but it's worth standing up there with the best of them. <3

This was pretty. The cover had shiny gold foil on it, which is why I felt the need to read it, and the art inside was just as shiny and light as the cover, even if it didn't contain gold foil on the inside.

The first volume is about a high school girl whose sister is getting married in a hurry because she became pregnant by her long-term boyfriend. Ageha goes on a roller coaster of emotions, pinging between happiness about the wedding and her sister's happiness to inexplicable anger (and she even admits this) about her sister getting married. In other words, a pretty realistic teenager, and for some reason, that little bit of pettiness really grew on me.

This is the push Ageha needs to get her to go from making purses and accessories to working part time at a boutique that makes custom wedding dresses, and if I had to guess, the rest of the series will be her episodic growth to becoming a proper wedding-dress-tailor and (because this is shoujo) probably get together with one of the guys who run the shop.

I enjoyed it. It's not the greatest manga ever, but the art is pretty and I really like the characters for some reason.

This is a manga that I've read the first volumes of several times, but never finished. This is mostly because Tokyopop folded* a volume or two before completing the translation of V.B. Rose, and partially because I don't want it to end. Maybe this time!

*they didn't fold entirely, but close enough.

If a hypothetical someone asked me "What is the girliest manga?" this series would be one of the first I'd bring up. It's told entirely from the point of view of high school girl Ageha as she finds her place in the world as a beading and finework craftsperson working at a bridal shop. Its owner is bristly and eccentric and gorgeous, and, of course, over the course of the series the two fall in love. The manga shows all the hard work behind the glamour of designer wedding dresses and accessories, as well the joy of creating something unique that will last in a (rich) bride's memory forever.

This manga has an extensive cast, some of whom were the romantic leads of Hidaka's previous series, or their siblings, etc. Even though the only other Hidaka manga I've read is Tears of a Lamb, I get the same sense of a created universe or world that I do from longer series in other genres. My favorite secondary character is Ageha's best friend, Mamoru, whose wry sympathy helps Ageha through her various teenage crises.

Coming back to this years later, I'm surprised by how busy the panels are. They're full of little bits of extra writing and detail. The art is as lovely as I remembered. Ageha's a right brat in the beginning, but there's something charming about the way she goes 100% all-in on all of her emotions. She also clearly knows how to apologize when she realizes she's been unfair, and she gives her all to make up for mistakes. She's young, and she's learning, and it's adorable to see. Her relationship with her sister is so well done!

I don't know. Seems to me like a really average shojo series. Full of laces and wedding dresses, sweet as sugar. Probably too sweet for me.

The beginning of a sweet series. This is my 2nd time reading this. There’s some great characters in this series and the storyline is great. This is a light hearted, fluffy story so don’t expect too much drama.
Ageha is a great main character. She’s smart for her age but still has her “teenage” moments. She’s creative and adorable. Her love for her older sister is sweet. It’s the kind of closeness that I hope for my own daughters.

*FYI - Volumes 13 and 14 weren’t ever published in English. You can read both volumes online though!
It’s sad to know that my collection will never be complete but the series is still worth owning!!!*

It’s cute but both of this 16 year olds love interests are in their early 20s… and mutiple times throughout the book the character makes comments about how one of them is making her uncomfy or when it blatantly said in all caps “sexual harassment” after this 20 yr old man was hugging and gawking at her for being in her school uniform. The only reason why this isn’t 1 star is because the story line is a cute idea but the very obvious minor and adult relationship that the author is trying to build is not doing it for me ngl. Very pretty book aesthetic wise, that’s why I picked it up. Other than that, this is a potentially good story line ruined by pedophila.

I really enjoyed it. V.B. Rose is just one of the shojos that makes you smile. And laugh, a lot. I couldn't stop laughing. Ageha is so clueless to her sisters realality.

I recommend reading this if you want a manga to make you smile and laugh.

Happy reading! ;)

My first thought: Omg Ageha is so cute! And spoiled. My second thought: Wow she is a decent girl after all.

The Plot
Ageha gets the job of a lifetime - making her sister's wedding dress. Ageha loves making handbags and other accessories, so when one of her sister's dress makers hurts his hand she jumps right in to help! And thus begins Ageha's adventures at the fashionable Velvet Blue Rose.
Even though this sounds like a standard shoujo manga, it is definitely not. It's like Ouran High school Host Club and Skip Beat! and even Fruits Basket. The elements are there, yet, the characters are unique and completely different to the normal standard shoujo hot guy or beautiful girl. The plot is better than the standard shoujo. With that extra kick, which makes this series so likeable. Not only is it comedic, it's also high on romance and emotional moments (though I'll say, around ch60-70 there are just too many flashback moments).
Oh and yes, this is probably only one of those few mangas where both the girl and the guy are equal in level of handsomeness and cuteness. Ageha is gorgeous and Yukari is beautiful, therefore = in beauty Lol. The only other manga that I can think of at this moment is Ojōsama Wa Oyomesama 1(which I thought was also good and cute)

The Characters
Ageha: I really like her character, she's girly, and spoiled when it comes to her sister, and she cares. When she's wrong, she'll admit that she's wrong which I think makes a great character. She's also very funny to watch, and very true to her feelings because she's so honest.

Yukari: The love interest. I thought he was going to be boring, hot and boring, but I was surprised. It was a lovely surprise. He's a bit of an ogre when it comes to being serious about work and family, but he's as genuine as Ageha, which is why they fit so well together. He's definitely not a standard love interest. Yes, he is a workaholic, yes he's beautiful, but he's also rough and harsh, as well as very endearing when it comes to Ageha, it's very cute.

And the rest of the supporting characters are a cast of colour and textures, ranging from cynical to flirtatious playboy to shy and nervous, I loved all of them.

The Setting
Japan of course. But this time, the main scenario is V.B.Rose, the bridal shop that Yukari owns.

Writing/Artwork
The writing is great. I especially love it in the scenes when Ageha and Yukari are kind of/not quite tiptoeing around each other about their feelings.
Artwork: excellant. I love it. It's beautiful. I really love this kind of drawing. Elegant and simple, yet pretty.

Overall
I get such a good feeling from reading this, it's definitely not a series that shouldn't be read. So read it if you're after a good shoujo manga, read it if you're bored. Read it for an amusingly light fluffy read, I can guarantee it's worth it!

This was another grab at my Border's going out of business sale. I was in the mood for some light shoujo manga, and this fit the bill perfectly. V. B. Rose is a bridal shop run by two young, handsome men (what else would you expect from a shoujo manga?). At the start of this series, we meet young high school girl Ageha who has a knack for making accessories (mostly bags and purses) with a trademark butterfly pattern or imprint (her name means "swallowtail"). Her bags have become very popular by word-of-mouth and are known on the street as "the Ageha series." Ageha's older sister, who she idolizes, suddenly announces that she is pregnant and will be getting married to her boyfriend (the father of her child). Ageha has a major sister complex and acts up horribly because she feels like her sister has become someone she doesn't know anymore. Her sister decides to have a gown hand-designed by the gents at VBR, and Ageha - who tags along because she loves all things "bridal" - at first makes a very bad impression on the temperamental owner (Yukari) with her bad behavior and tantrums. However, Yukari and Mitsuya (VBR partners) are fans of Ageha's work and, through a twist of circumstance, allow her to come and work part-time at VBR to help complete her sister's dress. This, of course, turns out to be the perfect job for Ageha and, of course, her relationship with Yukari and Mitsuya improves dramatically as both gents start to feel affection for Ageha.

Like I said, a good light-hearted series with a little romance, lots of frills and lace, and some good humor throughout. I'll keep reading for sure...

This is a very cute and fluffy story. I love the dresses, I love the art, but I'm not so sure as to what this story is working for. I've read through volume 9, and the "goal" that was set up gets met and left behind. It's as if I have forgotten how to read a series and as I read this, I'm wondering what sort of conclusion is Hidaka aiming at. Is it:
Ageha to accept her sister for who she really is?
Ageha to accept Hibari's future husband?
Ageha to get and keep a job at VBR?
Yukari to accept Ageha?
Mitsuya being happy pappy with his brother?
Yukari to get over his drama with his mom?
Ageha being a professional bag maker? Her getting married?

I mean, this is not like a school theme where we all know it ends at graduation, Pokemon where it ends with someone being the champ, or even Harry Potter where the ultimate climax is the showdown between himself and that evil wizard whom shall not be named. It's not like I don't understand what it's about, or that I need to be able to predict the way the story should go. The best stories are not predictable but are clear and exciting to read. I don't want to read a story with the thought of when is it going to end, which is what I found myself doing with this.

This manga is adorable! The art itself is beautiful and elegant, with really clean, crisp lines and characters beautiful enough to be models. I first read this when a friend had lent me her copy a few years ago, so I'm basically writing this review out of what I remember, as I do not have an actual copy of the book myself. The manga is about a girl named Ageha who has some serious talent when it comes to sewing. She's always looking up to her elder sister, whom everyone adores because she's a graceful girl and Ageha just isn't graceful like her sister. Well one day she manages to get a job making bridal gowns at a shop run by these two guys This manga is different from your typical shoujo manga because it centers around sewing and making bridal gowns to fit every customer's needs. When do you come across a manga like that? Also, the wedding gowns in V.B Rose are really beautiful! I remember this one sleeveless, Chinese inspired one with a Mandarin collar and a long, elegant train. It was gorgeous! Since a large number of shoujo manga are centered around food and baking and the likes, this manga will be perfect for those who enjoy handcrafts and sewing. It's a sweet read(:

I didn't expect to find this series as ridiculously enjoyable as I did. It's pure shojo fluff of the highest grade. The artwork is excellent and the plot generally fast moving. The characters are very likeable, although the heroine can come off a bit bratty at first. However, she improves fast, and I love the fact that she has skills and a passion in life other than being kawaii and chasing some boy she hardly knows! I really like the way she and the guy she eventually falls for encourage each other in the pursuits they love.
The series may occasionally fall back on shojo cliches, but it makes up for them with sheer charm and fun. If you're looking for a feel-good read and don't mind utter, unashamed girliness (it does revolve around a bridal boutique, after all) give it a try!
It's a shame it's no longer being published; I would love it if someone else would pick up the license.

V.B. Rose when I first picked it up I put it back down almost instantly. But last July I grabbed it again and my friend gave me a weird look. Its usually not the kind of stuff I read but I really did like this manga. Its was really funny and very enjoyable. He characters just seem to come to life in this series. This is the first title I have read by Banri Hidaka and I'm going to look into her others. I showed a few of my friends this series and they all loved it. The characters are really enjoyable and the story line is pretty good. Ageha is so I guess outgoing and brave and she always seems to be in trouble. The style and expressions that Banri Hidaka's characters make are enjoyable. She's definetly one of my favorite.

I really enjoyed this book. It is about a girl whose older sister is going to get married and she is getting her wedding gown made by these two guys. The girl is able to sew she makes her own purses, and sometimes clothes. She is having a problem with her sister getting married. For some reason she has to start helping the guys in the shop. I like how her and the owner act together. He is always kinda mean but does have a nice heart. The other guy is always trying to hug her. (Great part the guy from I hate you more then anyone makes an appearance, bad thing since I have finished the series you kinda find out what happens. But that won't stop be from reading it)

I love this manga!!

It's got a fantastic storyline and the artwork...LOVE.

This is becoming more a rave than a review. Sorry. But seriously, this manga is one of the best I've read. I was astonished it has such a low (high) ranking--it's about a girl who designs purses and is pretty much a clothing genius...and two guys who run a dress shop...and the ensuing romance is superb.

I enjoyed the simplicity of the story and the characters were very easy to connect with.

Highly recommend!
