Leah travels to Washington D.C. with her father to share the Gospel with soldiers. Jeff briefly joins them and travels north into Union territory to search for his captured father. Later, Leah and her sister Sarah travel south to Richmond, in Confederate territory, to care for their ailing uncle Silas, and Leah has to defend her sister against charges of treason. Yankee Belles in Dixie is the second of a ten book series, that tells the story of two close families find themselves on different sides of the Civil War after the fall of Fort Sumter in April 1861. Thirteen year old Leah becomes a helper in the Union army with her father, who hopes to distribute Bibles to the troops. Fourteen year old Jeff becomes a drummer boy in the Confederate Army and struggles with faith while experiencing personal hardship and tragedy. The series follows Leah, Jeff, family, and friends, as they experience hope and God’s grace through four years of war.
Gilbert Morris was one of today's best-known Christian novelists. He lived in Gulf Shores, Alabama, with his wife, Johnnie. He is the father to Lynn Morris and Alan Morris
This one has a nice juxtaposition from the last one, where Jeff went with the Carters to the North, with Sarah and Leah going South to care for a sick uncle. Once again, Morris captures the tension and real sadness of the time so well. Plus, Sarah and Tom are so sweet, and Jeff and Leah are meant for each other; they just don't know it yet.
Other than a few inconsistencies from the previous book in the series to this one, I adored this story. The twists that popped up in the plot were realistic and kept the stakes and tension high. Lovely story!
The beginning of this book didn't quite add up with the ending of the first book in this series, but this was still an enjoyable book, nonetheless. I still loved it, and I look forward to re-reading more of this series!
Again, my 10 year old would rate this higher. There’s nothing I find objectionable about it. The middle grade style just seems a little too cut-and-dried for me as an adult.
Eeeeh! Jeff and Leah❤️❤️❤️❤️ I adore this series so much and especially the characters and their relationships… they’re so real and some of my favorite characters ever. Jeff and Leah’s relationship is the best, though it is a little bittersweet for me personally. I also love Tom and Sarah. The opening was a bit inconsistent from the ending of the last book- it was like we got the same event twice but it happened differently- but aside from that the entire book was awesome and I loved it! 8+
An interesting look at the opening battles (and behind-the-lines action) of the US Civil War, with a shift in scene, some character developments for the protagonists, and a couple of surprises along the way. There were a couple of editorial errors (confusion of a character's rank), but overall a good read; I am looking forward to where the rest of the series leads!
