November Snow #1

She Dies at the End

Rate this book
November Snow has seen her own burial a thousand times. It is the only thing she knows about her future.

In a war amongst vampires and fairies, a small advantage can mean the difference between victory and defeat. And a psychic who can peer across the globe, unspool the past, and probe the future is more than a small advantage. Everyone wants to use her for his own ends: the ancient king, the black sheep, the dutiful son, the lost boy.

But November Snow wants things, too, before death comes for her. She wants purpose. She wants friendship. She wants love. She wants happiness. She wants respect. And she will not settle for less.

Pulled into the midst of a royal family feud centuries in the making, she must forge her own path through violence, betrayal, first loves, and mortal peril as she struggles to come to terms with her gift and her destiny, even as she knows this for certain:

She dies at the end.

This book contains magic and supernatural creatures aplenty, a smattering of heretical Christianity, and a cast of characters that is diverse in both race and sexual orientation. It also contains scenes of violence and some sexual content and may be triggering to victims of child abuse, human trafficking, or sexual assault.

You could argue that a title could not better prepare you for the end of a book. So imagine my surprise when I was still left with chills and tears despite the clear and distinct warning! Unfortunately I was also left with utter and complete disappointment...that I have to WAIT for the next book in the series! I couldn't even drown my woes by jumping into another book, because I couldn't bring myself to "leave" these characters yet; they're THAT good! I can't find anything about this book to constructively criticize - all I can do is gush. It was easily one of the most memorable books I've read this year, if not THE most memorable.
I particularly appreciate the "human-ness" of our main character - her worries, her insecurities, her weaknesses...while she simultaneously demonstrates throughout the story her incredible strengths - physical, emotional and strength of character. The magical combination makes her easy to love, admire, root for, and aspire to. Even her name is awesome, for crying out loud! November Snow? How cool is that!?
Aside from great characters, there were many aspects of the story that leave me in deep thought long after I've finished the book, themes of prejudice vs. forgiveness and destiny vs. self-determination, to name a few. I'm a HUGE fan of A.M. Manay now, and anxiously await book two...and for the movie deal she very much deserves with this work!

How would you feel if you saw yourself dying and then being buried in front of your eyes? Being a psychic, November Snow has seen this chilling scenario many times in her young life. She then meets creatures that take her into their midst and she discovers that having special powers can sometimes be a bane rather than a gift. I just loved the ending.
Find out more in this hard to put down novel by A.M.Manay. It grips you from the first line and you are hooked until the book is finished. It deals with the fascinating subject of premonition and second sight and a whole lot more. A.M.Manay takes you into a magical world and does it so convincingly that you begin to believe in it. It reminded me of Alice in a sort of twilight wonderland.
I loved the name of the protagonist, November Snow. Despite her vulnerability and sensitivity, her strength was always visible in every scenario she had to contend with. Overall, a very enjoyable book with a unique concept!

You just don't know. It's late at night. I have work tomorrow and I finished this book. Couldn't stop it. It just happened.

You come to this one for the vampires, you stay for the humanity. It's like nothing you've read. Like me, you will find yourself lost in November Snow's life. She is who we all want to be, strive to be.

While this novel has sexy, romantic elements, it's not a simple romance. It's a teaching moment as well. The action is big, and the events are complex. It actually made it to my must read list. Everything does not make that list.

November Snow is a seer; she has seen her own burial many, many times. She is working in a carnival, living with her neglectful, addicted mother, when she is visited by the very people she has seen in her visions. This is when she learns that vampires, fairies, and werewolves are real, and that she has become a pawn in a dangerous war.

I have seen books with psychics, vampires, fairies, and werewolves before. In many cases, the plots are predictable and often dull. I am pleased to report that this is not the case with "She Dies at the End." November was a compelling, nuanced character and pleasantly mature for her age. I feel that the author did an excellent job creating a character that the reader would want to know more about and hope that the visions were wrong. The other characters, including Zinnia, Pine, and Ilyn, were fascinating, and I already wish that there were prequels or other books with them as the main characters. The villain in the story was deliciously evil and definitely easily detestable, as well.

I don't want to describe too much for fear of ruining the story for other readers, but I will say that I read the book in a single day and stayed up late that night to finish it. It's definitely worth reading and savoring, so I plan to re-read it again and again, and to find details I missed the first time around. I recommend you download the book and stay up late to read it. One of the best things I've read lately.

While I do know the author personally, this has not influenced my review in any way.

I have to preface my review with this: I don't usually choose read vampire stories. I was reluctant to read this one, but agreed based on a friend's recommendation. Now for my review.

On page one, I thought, "Wow. This is slick writing." Very tight. No extra words. No unnecessary adverbs or weasel words. Just good, clean writing. By the end of the first chapter, I was in love with November, the main character. By the middle of the second chapter, I couldn't put the book down. I finished the book two days ago, and I still think of the characters as if they will show up in front of me, just to give me an update. To me, that is the mark of an excellent book. I crave book two.

This book gave me a rare "aha" moment. I thought I didn't care for fantasy/sci fi. As I read this book, I thought of the way I connected with Stephen King's Salem's Lot, and I finally understood. I LOVE a good fantasy novel, as long as it is well written. This one is superb.

The characters in this novel are magnetic. From the first pages, I felt as though they were people I knew and wanted to spend time with. To me, characters make the book. I LOVED these characters. I miss them already. I need that sequel. A.M. Manay is talented, and I can't wait to read another of her works.

November Snow may already know 'She Dies at the End,' she is one tough cookie who never stops trying to help others. I am one of those people who usually passes on the vampire books. Am I glad I didn't pass on this one. WOW! A.M. Manay is an amazing storyteller who knows how to lead you down a path and then make a hairpin turn that makes you really pay attention. The characters are well developed. You fall in love with some and a few chapters later you want to smack them up the side of the head. But then, doesn't that make them real? Heck yeah!

There is also an unusual faith element in the story that I think is one of the things that really pulled me in. When you're almost to the end of the book, you realize just how amazing it is that November Snow as any kind of faith in anything. She is a rare, strong but soft, determined but fair, amazing young person. You will love her in all of her moods and attitudes.

I will definitely be picking up the next book Ms. Manay puts out.

Loved it; frequently found myself starting up past "lights out" to read just a few more pages.

There's complexity here. The author has built a world with some intricacy and a diverse set of well imagined characters with their own histories. Moreover, they are smart and in control of themselves -- you know all those characters in other books who make really obviously dumb decisions, whether falling in love with the wrong person or doing something that just makes you cringe to advance the plot? You won't find them here; Manay's heroine stands up for herself, knows what she's worth, and uses her brains. Even in this fantasy setting, there are no miraculous illogical victories; Manay's world demands teamwork and sacrifice, and her characters rise to the challenge.

Ms. Manay wrote an amazing paranormal adventure. November Snow has the ability to see the future and works in a traveling carnival with her mother. Here enters vampires and fairies, and she is thrust into a world she has already seen. I loved the well-rounded characters, beautiful descriptions and depth of the story. I found myself enmeshed in a world, that I did not want to leave. I read late into the night, and finished the book during a power outage-- on a dark and stormy evening. When the author described the landscape, I slowed down and read it, instead of skipping by it to get to the “good” parts. It helped that I was born and raised where the story took place, but Ms. Manay had a way of making what I had seen daily, seem new to me. I have found an author I will be reading all her books! I am very excited to see what happens to November Snow next. I highly recommend this if you are a fan of vampires, werewolves, fairies, psychics, or just love a great fantasy story.

A real page turner. Fresh, interesting plot. Good character development. Downloaded the second book while I was writing this review. I haven’t read any paranormal fiction in a long time. I’m more familiar with the genre from TV shows, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lost Girl, for example. But the problem in any genre is the same, the story has to follow the conventions and yet somehow be different enough to be original. With paranormal, the relationships among the races of beings as well as the relationships among the individuals, the history and mythology that create the current reality, if you will, are particularly important. Manay deftly handles her material and keeps things moving. The only complaint I have is that the emotional development of the protagonist stalled at times for me. But it didn’t slow down my reading at all. Lots of fun.

November is a seer. A teenager now, she's had visions for years of her own death. She performs in a travelling circus, barely getting by since her careless mother is an addict. When strange people show up and tell her she must come with them, she feels guilty about leaving her mother, but at the same time is eager to get on to the dark destiny that seems to be in store for her. She is now living in a world of vampires, fairies and werewolves and isn't quite sure where she fits in. Manay's book is well written, exciting and entertaining, with well-developed characters that I felt invested in enough to keep reading. A great read. I just downloaded the second one last night!

This book can best be described as fascinating.

From the very first page, the setting jumps out in real and vivid imagery. Into which the diverse cast of characters comes to life organically, starting as believable elements of their environment and quickly gaining depth and form as A.M. Manay reveals their complexity over the course of the story. There are so many successful elements here: masterful foreshadowing, maintaining of tension and suspense, dialogue, character building, even romance. More than that, though, it's just a great story.

I was one of the many people who was put off the vampire-and-werewolf theme after plodding through yawn-worthy quasi-literature spawned by the Twilight fad. But this book has restored my interest, and piqued my curiosity. The world portrayed in "She Dies At The End" is detailed and well thought out. Backgrounds of the various supernatural creatures are grounded in history and the convoluted relationships of generations, which gives each character depth and culture beyond the individual. It is a delight to discover their world through the eyes of November, the protagonist, as she slowly becomes part of it. Also, I have to give Manay credit for making vampires sexy again. All I can say about that is I look forward to seeing how relationships develop in the next books of the series...

This was an exciting and thought-provoking read. Well-written, superbly paced, and full of interesting characters. A great piece of writing and a great story. I'm looking forward to the next November Snow book! Heartily recommended.

Fabulous story of a young human psychic who becomes ensnared in a war among vampires. This is a fairly lengthy book but I finished it in three days. It would have been two, if work hadn’t intervened. From the start I was mesmerized by the world the author created—one in which humans, faeries, vampires and werewolves co-exist. Even more so, I loved the hierarchy the author built related to the vampires and their warring factions. The intrigue is spectacular, much like the manipulations of historical courts and kingdoms.

The central character, November Snow, is strong without being overdone. She’s tough, but she’s also got weaknesses and the author isn’t afraid to let them come through now and then. Ms. Manay has built a world that easily rivals those of Twilight and the Shadowhunter series with characters who command the pages. I admit to a special fondness for Ilyn, the king, but there are many others who resonated with me as well.

My only quibble is that there were multiple occasions when the author slipped from third person or deep POV into omniscient-narrator and I found that effect jarring, removing me briefly from the story. The reason I mention it is because this book is spectacular, and I would hate to see that be a drawback for the author in future novels. Normally, I would deduct a star for that, but I found this book so intoxicating, the writing otherwise superb, the plot and characters carefully constructed, that I can give it no less than five stars. If you read only one vampire book this year, make it this one. You won’t be disappointed!

YA vampire books are a dime a dozen, and after finishing, She Dies at the End, I can easily say that this book stands out against the rest. What A.M. Manay has done is taken the genre and given it a new, refreshing take.
Ever since a young age, November Snow has had special abilities that, at one point in her life, led her to a stay in a padded room. That ability is to see the deaths of people she comes in contact with, even her own. One day while working at a carnival, some unusual characters drop in. Led by a vampire William, he, along with another vampire and a fairy, convince her to come with them. Intrigued by visions of her death, that includes them watching over her burial, November agrees.
After William pays Novembers mother to basically forget about her, she takes a bite to the neck and heads off with his group. From here, the story takes off, and to avoid spoilers, let me just say that this book has made my top five indie books of 2016. Not once did I find myself bored. It is extremely well written, fascinating characters, and a plot that stands above other YA vampire novels. Hats off to A.M. Manay for a fantastic novel.

She is going to die and she knows it. Genre aside, that right there is a powerful and intriguing story idea. No one has threatened her or anything. She has simply seen her own funeral. Brilliant. The big question to be answered here is laid out plainly in the title, and within a page or two of reading, we’re in. We’re going to need to know how and why she dies at the end…. So now we have a clear and simple yet powerfully intriguing question, but do we have a story journey to back it up? Definitely! The setting is a tangible paranormal world with interesting relationships between the different species and plenty of historic complexity. Certainly 3 dimensional. And the tale of who our heroine is and how and why she dies is rich and captivating storytelling…. For mine, this book is every bit as good as the title.

The novel takes place northern California - I loved that I recognized many of the place names! Ms. Manay effortlessly manages a very complex world of vampires, werewolves, and fairies, with snippets of history throughout, weaving their backgrounds together. The main character is sweet but confident, not trapping herself in the pitfalls of young love. The vampires she meets don't like humans, but she quickly learns that they are very human in their customs and beliefs and that their world mimics ours in terms of the competitions for power and efforts at peace. I'm curious to hear how the saga will play out in the next installment.

Vampires and fairies exist in our world, we just don’t know they’re there. They’re powerful and successful business men. Yes they’re also violent and ruthless , with each other as much as us humans. The main character, November, is human who sees visons of possible futures when she comes into contact with these people. When a vampire lord finds her she is a disturbed and vulnerable young making a living as a fairground fortune. Other vampires are also after her and will stop at nothing to acquire her. This is a well thought out and well written story of the supernatural that exists amongst us. There is always a tension that keeps the reader engrossed. November finds hidden strength as she adapts to her new life, never sure who is good or bad. A great read for vampire lovers and those new to the genre

I just started reading this trilogy and now CAN’T WAIT to pick up the other two books. It was so good.

I’m a lover of all things fantasy and paranormal but it is so hard to find new authors that I really like. Which is why I can’t stop thinking about this book.

November (the main character) has had a heart-wrenching life where she is forced to re-live her own death in her dreams. She’s waiting for the fateful moment when all her loneliness will end when, WHAM, she’s is pulled into a dark and seedy underworld by the very person she has seen burying her in her dreams.

And then the real fun starts.

This book was filled with vampires, fae, werewolves, supernatural powers and everything else I love inside a fantasy novel, along with the depth of an epic battle brewing and about to boil over. November finds herself treading a knife’s edge inside this dark world of betrayal while still desperately searching for the life she wishes to live… before she dies.

If you’re a fantasy-crazed-reader like me, you’ll love this series.

The Best Book I’ve Read This Year

Someone mentioned there was one word for this book and that’s FANTASTIC. I whole-heartedly agree. I loved it and can’t wait to read the rest in the series which I’ve already purchased.

She Dies at the End has everything you’ll love, vampires, fairies, werewolves, suspense, real-to-life characters with flaws but who are brave, romance, and it’s well-written with well-drawn characters.

I highly recommend She Dies at the End and give it 5+ stars. Follow A. M. Manay at http://eepurl.com/bzCa9r. I know I am.
