“Her Majesty’s Necromancer,” is book two in “The Ministry of Curiosities” series. Again, I would like to give fair warning that this series has some very dark content and I would recommend it for mature audiences, preferably whom are not too squeamish. Like the first book, the story moves very quickly and is easy to follow. I picked this book up immediately after finishing the first book. While this is a character and relationship driven book, “Her Majesty’s Necromancer” shifts its focus in that the mystery and action are more in the forefront; especially since Charlie takes it upon herself to get more involved.
Charlie accepts a maid’s position so that she can remain at Lichfield Towers, giving her a home for the first time in five years. When bodies go missing from the cemetery, Lincoln and the Ministry of Curiosities investigate. But not Charlie. As a housemaid at Lichfield Towers, she doesn’t get involved in Ministry business. Instead, she conducts investigations of her own. She searches for details about her real mother and makes inquiries into Lincoln’s background. What she learns has the power to destroy the fragile trust they’ve built or bring them closer together. As secrets are revealed, and investigations don’t go as planned, Charlie finds her necromancy sucking her into a whirlpool filled with betrayal, lies and danger that could jeopardize her friendships and her new home.
Picking up where book one left off, “Her Majesty’s Necromancer” is just as much of a page-turner as the story continues. The characters are vividly drawn and they all have secrets, secrets that are just as intriguing as they are. Charlie’s really coming into her own, she’s determined to prove that she can be an asset to the Ministry rather than just their token necromancer. She’s learning to accept her abilities instead of being afraid of them. She is really transforming into this incredible character. The reader gets some more insight into Lincoln’s history and character as he tries to balance the demands of the ministry against his growing affinity for Charlie. Their relationship takes on an awkward and interesting dynamic in this book now that her ordeal from book one is over.
So far, I am thoroughly enjoying this series and literally started reading book three “Beyond the Grave” the moment I finished “Her Majesty’s Necromancer.” This is an excellent dark historical urban fantasy that I just could not put down.
