Annelie Wendeberg likes to throw morally grey heroines into impossible situations just to watch disaster unfold. Her books have sold nearly a million copies worldwide in multiple languages through both independent and traditional publishing. When she's not writing, you can find her herding goats, making cheese, and saving owls and kangaroos from peril.
I love all of the books by this author. This is the third installment, and it just keeps getting better. Please read this author, because she grabs you from the first chapter. Start from book #1, though. The Devils Grin...I love her main character Anna, and of course who does not love Sherlock Holmes. Anna is a strong, and centered character, even when her life is in shambles. I love the fact that Sherlock is not just all facts, and numbers, and off putting. There is some of that, or it would not be Holmes, yet she gives us a glimpse of his vulnerability, as well. The story is sharp, with twists and turns, and the ending coming much to soon, for this reader. I love all the characters, that are so cleverly woven into her stories. She makes you cheer for Anna,..No spoilers, and keeps you wanting the next book, to already be on the market. I love this author...my only complaint is..write faster......great read!!!!!
The story continue with Anna and Sherlock Holmes being hunted by Sebastian Moran. Can she survive long enough to give birth, unravel Moriaty's aim, and live. She will need the help of both Holmes brothers and Dr. Watson. Another enjoyable well-written read in this series.
an excellent final instalment in an already very good series - anna kronberg is really a great character, full of energy, I like the way she's reflecting on women's place in victorian society, I also liked the authoress's reflecting through anna kronberg's character, on bacterial wars- I look forward to reading her other adventures
I became an Annelie Wendeberg follower and patron after I read her sci fi Cut (1/2986 ). I love sci fi but her Anna Kronberg series is 1. Incredibly well written, leading you through all things Victorian. 2. Strong woman theme.3. Better than Sherlock Holmes stories...(personal). 4. Incorporates historical accuracy. I'm hooked!
The Journey, an Anna Kronberg mystery by Annelie Wendeberg
The Journey picks up three days after the conclusion of "The Fall." Anna and Sherlock are traveling on foot cross country in order to avoid detection by Moran and his men. Anna is now about 5 months pregnant; still desperately unhappy about it, but beyond the time when she can choose to terminate the pregnancy. The weather is cold and wet, both of them are dirty, tired and hungry. There resources are dwindling to nothing. Anna uses the hunting skills she learned as a child to help keep food on their plates. They are no closer to determining what plan for the use of biological weapons James Moriarty set into motion prior to his death.
Their plan is to finally resurface in a way that will alert Moran to their presence, to fake a miscarriage, and when Moran reports to Moriarty's estate attorneys that the child is dead, for Anna to appear, still pregnant, in hopes of demeaning Moran in the Moriarty family's eyes. Things go well and everyone in the little town where they appear believes that Anna has miscarried. They even are able, with Mycroft's help to have a stillborn child to bury. Anna and Sherlock go to the estate attorneys and Anna is awarded her dower as James's widow and the rest of the estate is set over in trust to her unborn child.
But, from there, the plans take a turn for the worse. Moran does not give up the search for them, and manages to capture Anna. She is wounded and Moran promises her he will return when the child is born to "harvest."
From there, the race is on to figure out what Moriarty's plan was and how to thwart it, how to lay a trap for Moran and his men, and how to keep Anna and her child safe.
The book is action from beginning to end. Lots of emotional angst on the part of both Anna and Sherlock.
The book is full of twist and turns, from the rescue of Anna's former lover, Garret from death row, to the actual delivery of Anna's baby, of course at the most inoportune time. All along the way, the author lays out little clues and red herrings, driving the main characters mad. Maybe there were too many clues and twists, as I finally stopped trying to make sense of it and decided to just let the story lumber on.
Great editing and proofing. Wonderful ability to not only present a realistic view of the time period, but to do so in a very readable fashion. Good plotting (if a bit long in the tooth). Characterizations are fully fleshed out. Lots to like about this book.
And, it ends leaving the door open for adventures to come in the future. And there is a 4th book. A prequel. Really? Ah. No thanks. This trilogy was depressing enough as it was, without asking the reader to go back to the beginning and backpedal.
So, will I read more of the series if she decides to write more. I can't say. I liked the books, but boy am I glad they are in the "read" column.
I didn't like this one as much as the previous two. Ugh, and that ending! There's a lot of observing and spying on other people. A lot of moving around to different cities and hanging out in hotel rooms and reviewing Moriarty's papers and Moran's journal. Anna and Holmes spend a lot of time together but emotionally apart. And they come up with complex ways to trap Moran and then in the end Anna just runs off to America and washes her hands of Holmes and leaves Moran running around. Now realistically I knew Anna was not going to wait around for Holmes but I didn't expect her to take off with Moran still on the loose. Come on, he's probably on the same ship as her and she won't make it to America because he'll throw her off the ship. Such a reversal in Anna's character does not feel authentic. It's almost like the author tried to end the book with the chapter before and was told the book couldn't end like that and added a final chapter to please the publisher. Also, Moriarty dies at the end of the second book but Moran is the hard one to track down and kill? Not my favorite of the series but the series is still worth reading.

A satisfying, but creepy, end to the Anna Kronberg series. Anna has disguised herself as a man in order to study medicine in 1890's England. She has become Dr. Anton Kronberg, renowned surgeon and bacteriologist. After a series of deaths by unexplained disease, Anna pairs up with Sherlock Holmes in order to uncover a plot by Moriarty to use germ warfare to protect England and his business interests. This series is not for the weak of heart. It is very dark, violent and creepy. Questionable moral decisions are made resulting in both innocent and not so innocent deaths. Just as Sherlock has many dark secrets, Anna hides a darkness that only Sherlock can uncover. Fans of Sherlock Holmes won't be offended, but may find this series to be an extension of the struggles faced in Sir A.C. Doyle's original books.
I liked this one better than the second book. I kept waiting for Moriarty to pop up any minute, I can't fathom the super genius having been dispatched so easily, or Moran continuing his pursuit out of loyalty to a dead man. Both of these aspects took away from the plot for me, although I suppose some might find these twists less cliche. The tension between Holmes and Anna is growing and the ending caught me by surprise. Looking forward to more adventures of the good doctor and Sherlock. All in all, I enjoyed this book very much.
Annelie Wendeberg has a wonderful writing style and she never fails to keep her readers on their toes. Once again, the series took an unexpected turn in The Journey. I really enjoyed this! I am looking forward to seeing where the author takes her readers next. The Journey is book three in the Kronberg Crimes series. I’m a stickler for reading a series in order, so definitely pick up the first two before reading.
Oh Yes! I waited with such anticipation for this 3rd installment of the Kronberg series and I was not disappointed. Ms. Wendeberg has triumphed once again. I have become such a HUGE Kronberg fan that Sherlock will never again be the same without her. Thank you!
Annelie Wendeberg has written a riveting trilogy of mystery and adventure in 1890s London and the continent. Although fiction the story of Anna and Holmes is believable.
I too enjoyed this series and want to thank Ja'nell for clueing me in to this wonderful author. I hate to see it end and find that I want more of Anna and her adventures with Sherlock Holmes! Thank you to Ms. Annelie Wendeberg for one wonderfully intriguing story!
I liked the series very much. I only had a small problem with the last chapter of the book. It fell flat. I think an epilogue would have been nice to give the story a finished feeling.
I would have never expected the ending. The heroine makes two decisions that altered her life completely. I was also hoping for a romance that was hinted at but never occurred.
Sherlock Holmes is much more in play as this international high stakes game is afoot. (Yep, I went there)
Throughout this series a powerful reminder of what women endured and overcame to experience life on their terms no matter what obstacles they faced. From the impoverished mothers in a rookery, a brilliant mind that can match wits with Sherlock Holmes or the gilded cage of the highborn. This has an excellent number of mysteries that weaves an entrancing web. The Character of Anna is all things strong women should exhibit—sharp intellect, strength of purpose, a vulnerability when her heart is aroused. This book has Anna wrestling (sometimes ad nauseam) with her choices, their consequences and self flagellating herself through literal fields, streams and bog. Then through multiple nations (which are Magnificently described) to try to unravel the Gordian knot that has become her life. For various reasons she’s wrestling with her morality and major philosophical issues. Do we all struggle with these at times? Of course we do but the illogical and self depreciating tone didn’t ring true of the Anna we’ve come to know and love. Very large life questions aren’t decided by someone so intelligent and educated on emotionalism.
I’ve listened to the first 4 books on Audible and the Narrator’s voice and characterization of Anna, the shrillness, the German accent which always seems off somehow and poor transition between female and male characters had me gritting my teeth my at times. Sherlock Holmes sounds like a effeminate harpy. Sadly Watson and Moriarity are the best voices portrayed.
The WRITING is very good. Historical, political/cultural and medical research was excellent and could really transport you to Newgate Prison, Berlin, Paris, Brussels, London Tea Shops as well as, of course, 221B Baker Street.
The vacillating, moral quandary and Sherlock Holmes is the least recognizable in this book but we’re given an interesting psychological forensic backstory to explain it. I do not mind “increasing the Holmesian mythology”. At the very least, do yourself a favor and listen the sample. Text to speech would have been a better alternative. The Narrator is good in her other dramatic readings.
I will be reading the next two books on my Kindle. Overall, I highly recommend this book series to your Sherlock Holmes repertoire.
I would describe this series as "uneven." The plot of this book made much more sense than that of the second book to me. It moved along much more quickly and the dialogue was less tiresome, if still inappropriate to the period--that doesn't bother me much, but it's worth noting. The characters just don't talk like Victorians would. I was also disappointed that the level of gender-bending is decreasing with each book. That was the most interesting part! Hoping Anna offers more observations on her two lives as man and woman in the 19th century in the next book.
I also agree with some other reviewers that the author really needs a better editor. I'm not the biggest grammar nazi, but there were some really obvious mistakes in the series, such as "Lions" for the city of Lyons, or the repeated use of "lady's room" or "lady's" instead of "ladies room." Also she uses "female" frequently, when "feminine" is the correct word. I know that these mistakes happen because Wendeberg is not a native speaker, but in that case, she definitely needs to hire a better editor because these small errors detract from her overall very good writing style.
What a chase! And a shocking conclusion. This volume was quite difficult to put down even for a moment. If you haven't read the previous books in the set, you should definitely start there because this won't make sense on its own. When I finished it, I started straight way on the next Anna Kronberg book.
I was immediately drawn to the blanket, a hat on a suitcase. I want to thank Netgalley and the press editions of the city for this partnership.
It all starts when Anna returns pregnant and hunted by her worst enemy. She has done everything with Sherlock Holmes to poison him except that Colonel Moran his henchman stalking, he wants to wait for the birth of the child.
A book filled with suspense and twists with a captivating story. The author takes us to the world of Sherlock Holmes brilliantly.
I truly enjoyed the first book, however, I have liked the following books less and less with each one. Now, this is not due to the writing or the story. I'm sorry to say I am being unfair because I want Anna and Sherlock to be a couple and I don't think it is going to happen. I understand why and yet I want it to happen anyway. My rating is not purely out of my desire, but some of it is the lack of communication between the characters through a very large chunk of the book. Fingers crossed for the next book in the series.
The first time I read this, I read it out of sequence. It was still good as a stand alone story but now, having read the first three in the series, I appreciate this much more. Anna is on the run from Moriority's dangerous henchmen. To stay safe she must separate from Sherlock Holmes. Discovering that she is pregnant adds massive complications to her flight. Quick and intense read.
I love the characters - especially Anna, but this third installment in the Moriarty trilogy frustrated me. The plot was fuzzy and sorta wandered around aimlessly at times. It was like she wanted a third book in order to tie up Anna’s pregnancy and get Anna out of Europe and into America, but really didn’t have a plan for what the story needed to be in order to get her there.
Did not finish it. Dropped after 60 pages and the last few pages. As it says on the back cover. Mary Sue gets pregnant after willingly bedding moriarty and then gets all his money. Sadly Moran tries to kill her for killing Moriarty and nope, the romance with Sherlock doesnt end in his bed.
I have become captivated by the female character in this series. Wendeberg has allowed her to grow in complexity. With each book the story is never done but I'm always satisfied with where I was taken and look forward to meeting Dr. Kronberg again in the future.
The only reason this doesn’t get five stars is because the previous books were well edited but this one has lots of typographical and grammatical errors.
