A cunning killer hides in plain sight.

A troubled teenage girl has been charged with the grisly murder of her stepfather. The evidence is damning: Emily was found alone at the scene with blood on her hands, and an incriminating e-mail she wrote outlines a murder plot identical to the method of the brutal slaying. But deputy district attorney Julia Chandler believes her niece is innocent, and she’s determined to keep the promise she made to protect her dead brother’s daughter–even if it means hiring private eye Connor Kincaid . . . the man who blames her for forcing his resignation from the police department.

Together Julia and Connor uncover a chain of unsolved violent crimes tied to an unorthodox therapist whose anonymous online patients purge their anger by posting lethal fantasies. But someone in the group has turned vigilante, turning the game of virtual murder into a flesh-and-blood vendetta.

After evil is seen, face your ultimate fear.

San Diego Deputy District Attorney Julia Chandler is the top lawyer in the DA’s office so when her 16-year old niece, Emily, is found unconscious in the same house where her stepfather’s mutilated body is discovered, she finds herself on the other side of the courtroom. She hires Connor Kincaid to join Emily’s team as their investigator, a controversial act given that the former police detective lost his job because of Julia five years ago. They begin to unravel what appears to be a chilling group of young vigilantes who are applying their own form of justice to seemingly unconnected victims.

Be forewarned that what’s under the rocks unearthed by Julia and Connor is a lot of human depravity. It will challenge your sense of right and wrong because the victims are far from sympathetic. It’s a provocative story that kept me engaged from the first chapter as the crimes were brutal and the perpetrators were unconventional. Piecing together the clues, motives and potential suspects wasn’t always easy as it was like the most challenging jigsaw puzzle. This was a wonderful police procedural in that respect though it was Julia and Connor, along with his brother Dillon, distilling and synthesizing the salient details.

Since Julia and Connor have a history, their relationship already had a foundation, though a contentious one. I liked how it evolved as they had to overcome major issues and confront things from the past that they’d not previously faced. I liked both of them as they are two very strong characters who maintained their identities despite the conflicts. That just made them more interesting (and exciting).

This was a tough story but one where I found it hard to turn away from or put down. It also has a spectacular ending.

I enjoyed this one. Have just finished the last in the trilogy and it was a bit of a letdown so better not let that colour my review of this one.

I liked that these two had a past. And not a very friendly past at that. But that changed ... after a while.

“People believe what they want to believe. They see no evil because they don't want to. But evil is out there, and this is the result." The holy man gestured to the dead girls. "You might not see the evil, Officer Kincaid, but you can see its handiwork right here.”

"We were both in a different place back then."

"We don't live in the past, Julia."

"Do you think we can find happiness?"

I really like the books in this series, but I need a pause to put my stomach in order!

I know that thre're some sick people out there, but to think in these books the vicious killers are teenagers! And that makes me sick...

I read this book biting my nails and really liked the suspense and the break-neack pace! Also the love story was very good!

If you want to enter into the mind of really twisted and sick people, I recommend the first in the series and this book too!

Judge Victor Montgomery has been murdered in his study. His teenage stepdaughter was found unconscious in the house. His blood was on her hands. District Attorney Julie Chandler doesn't believe her niece tried to kill anybody. Emily has had her share or problems, including running away from home. But she would never go this far for attention. Without knowing where to turn, Julia calls on Private Investigator Connor Kincaid. Connor found Emily when she ran away a couple of years ago. He said he would help Emily if she needed it. Will he help Emily even though he blames Julia for the loss of his career?

The second book in Brennan's Evil Trilogy kept me glued to the pages. I'm not a fan of getting into the killer's head. In this book we spent a lot of time with a group of killers, hearing their thoughts. We know exactly who they were. The reader had to figure out who was controlling them. There were a lot of twists and turns in this story. My rating: 4 Stars.

I have already read Books 1 and 3 in this trilogy, but wanted to read Book 2 as well. Although it is part of a trilogy it can be read as a stand alone book.

I enjoyed the MC's in this book as well as the plot. There are a lot of characters and some may seem more fleshed out if you had read Book 1 (or read it recently), but for the most part they are nicely developed in this novel. The plot is good but a little complicated due to the number of known and unknown characters.

There were a couple of scenes I wasn't thrilled with like when Julia gets drunk as an excuse to have to stay at Connor's place. Too contrived and too over done. And I didn't like that Julia could buy off her sister-in-law at the end of the book, but couldn't buy her out when her brother died and she was fighting for custody of her niece. Some circumstances had changed but still rubbed me wrong - I would have liked to see the custody changed due to her sister-in-law's behavior versus money.

I wished there was more of an epilogue as I am fond of those.

I do recommend all three books in this trilogy.

Another good read, although I skipped through pages and pages of romance again.

I didn't enjoy it as much as Speak No Evil.

It took me a little while to get into this one and get the characters straight in my head. I had to keep flipping back to see who was whom.

We are told how the group were all brought together and why so many people had died, but for me it wasn't enough to really explain why they did what they did.

The ending left me feeling flat.

Very good! Even though this is a 2nd book in the series, it really does very well as a standalone. Young 16 year old Emily is about to be accused of horribly mutilating her step-father. After all her prints were on the scene and his blood was in her room.

Now the race begins for deputy district attorney, Julia Chandler to prove that her niece didn't commit this heinous crime. She enlist the aid of unwilling PI, Connor Kincade. 5 years ago she forced Connor, who at the time was a cop, to testify against some fellow cops in a corruption cover-up. After the dust settled, Connor ended up having to resign.

She knows that if anyone can help Emmily Connor can, as he had helped locate her one time before. Can Connor and Julia work though their issues with one another to help Emily in time. They say that love is the flip side of hate. This book had some good hot moments in it and felt more romantic that some of AB's previous books. She also reconfirmed her toe sucking fetish. ;-) So far the Evil series has been a win.

I wasn't loving this story. I think the volume of characters involved in the crime and the loose connections were harder for me to follow. I might be at fault for a little less focus but it stems from not feeling the draw in this story. The cliche romance of enemies that suffered their situation causing jilted feelings reconciling later was meh. I didn't need that in here at all. I felt the intimate scene bored me and I wanted to get back to the detective aspect to resolve the mystery of the crime. That is not a good comment regarding your hot romance. Not sure I will read the last in the series. I did find interest in the character Faye though. Her role in the story held some interest and brought this rating up a star.

See No Evil
4 Stars

When her niece is accused of killing her stepfather, Deputy District Attorney Julia Chander must join forces with Private Investigator Connor Kincaid to overcover the web of lies and intrigue surrounding the murder. This is made all the more difficult given Julia and Connor's turbulent past.

The suspense plot involves captivating themes of vigilantism and the vulnerability of young people to manipulation. The cult-like vigilante group with its mysterious, enigmatic leader behind the scenes has a chilling effect on the reader. One problem, however, is the lack of character development for some of the secondary cast as well as a need to offer up less obvious red herrings and villains.

The romance is enjoyable as both Connor and Julia are sympathetic characters, and their relationship develops slowly from hate and distrust to admiration and love. They take their time overcoming their individual reservations and giving in to their mutual attraction. They have good chemistry and their connection in believable.

One last comment is about the writing style. There is an awkwardness surrounding the progression of certain events. It is as if Brennan wants the reader to come to a certain conclusion yet has failed to provide the necessary foundation and detail for the leap of logic that is necessary to reach said conclusion.

All in all, a satisfying read and I look forward to the final book in the trilogy, which is Dillon's story.

Started this April 15th, 2014 just after finishing Speak No Evil.
The "Evil" series is very bloody, brutal and has a rather high body count.
Nonetheless I think these are the best books so far from Allison Brennan.
A few sex-scenes, a bit of romance, but I consider the last sex-scene as too long, and boring, all where non-kinky and while not distracting, where not very interesting, and rather as pause from all the sadistic killing, a necessary break.

Although the ending is again predictable, and in most books rather the same (fight near the end, main baddie dies), there are enough twists and red herrings I could not guess who the leader was. Also I may have lost the view over the whole entangled group of people, some with name-changes, a few liars and a labyrinth of relations and reasons for killing, added to that different mind-diseases. Again, so far, this is by far the most complicated book.

In nearly all books there is a fine line for justice and vengeance and a stand taken against self-justice and vigilantes.
I like that.

Very highly recommended.

I really liked this book. It is #2 of the No Evil Trilogy and is a fast paced mystery/suspense with a romantic element. I prefer more of a romance, but I can settle if the suspense is good and this one is.

Julia and Connor have a bad history, but that doesn't stop her from calling her when her niece, Emily, is found in the same house with her murdered stepfather. The crime was nasty and brutal - the perp cut off his penis and stuffed it in his mouth, chocking him. Emily had a very good reason to kill him and Julia wants Connor, an ex-cop and now a PI, to find evidence to clear her.

The web they uncover is almost unbelievable and the reasons for the murders and the perps is obscured until the very end.

This is the second book in the No Evil series, and as I have said before I'm a fan!! What a book!!

Conner Kincaid is an ex-cop turned Private Investigator, he is hired by Assistant District Attorney Julia Chandler who ruined his career and was behind him losing his beloved job five years ago!

Why did she hire him? because he is the best and he cares for her niece Emily who is accused of murdering her step-father in the most grusome manner imaginable!

Julia believes Emily is innocent, so does Conner, and with the help of Conner's brother Dillon a phycologist they try to unravel the mystery of this almost perfect crime.

While trying to solve the mystery thay discover a series of violent crimes that seem to revolve around an individual and then surprises start happening..

And the history between Conner and Julia, will they be able to overcome the hurt and bypass it to start out fresh?!

Every time I say I know who the killer is.. the story moves around and surprises me..

I loved this book from cover to cover.. it's great for any mystery/crime reader.. just perfect!

Quotes I enjoyed from the book:

He knew why they made their choices, what motivated them, how to defeat them. He was the chess master. He reached for his cell phone and dialed Cami. Time to give her a bone and make her perform. Time for the next move.

It was on his orders, his command, who would live and who would die. The thrill of the hunt, of marking the sinners, elated him, kept him focused. He would fix the world one death at a time.

"People believe what they want to believe. They see no evil because they don't want to. But evil is out there, and this is the result." The holy man gestured to the dead girls. "You might not see the evil, Officer Kincaid, but you can see its handiwork right here."

"I'm a firm believer that no crime is perfect. Evidence always talks. Sometimes we don't hear it right away, but it's there whispering."

This is the second book in the "Evil" series (they're romantic suspense books), but you don't need to read the first in order to understand what's going on (I hadn't). The story and characters were interesting and there was lots of action as a group of vigilantes deliver their version of justice - however, I didn't like all those sections from the various antagonists. Lots of characters had screen time and I felt it diluted the main protagonists' stories and I'd rather been with them as they solved the mystery then with all those others (7 characters total!). I guessed the ending, which was fine, except I didn't quite understand the motivations for all the murders - the main one, yes, but the others...not so much.

I did finish the book, so I was engaged and concerned about the main protagonists, and I was entertained - which is why I read romantic suspense - for a fun break. I do have a copy of the third book, Fear No Evil and I will probably read that and the first one, Speak No Evil.

Well, what's scarier than a bunch of teenage serial killers? The leader who should know better, maybe!!!

Really enjoyed this book, Allison Brennan is a terrific writer with a mind that I just love.

We meet another Kincaid family member in this book - a very likable guy. A very hot scene (Kjen would love it), and a twisting tale with a red herring thrown in.

2 thumbs up and 5 stars - great read!

DDA Julia Chandler's niece, Emily, is in trouble. Due to some incriminating evidence, the police believe that Emily killed her stepfather. Julia is convinced that Emily is innocent and hires PI Connor Kincaid to help her prove it. The only problem is that Julia and Connor have a troubled past and don't really like or trust each other. With the help of Connor's brother, Dillon, they uncover a website called Wishlist and find other murders linked to it and the therapist who started it.

I like how this book focused on a different member of the Kincaid family. The author did a great job giving the reader Connor and Julia's background story throughout the book. It fit in perfect in some spots and never took away from the main story. I was also pleased that the death of Connor's nephew is mentioned and how it affected him. I'm very eager to learn more about that story.
The story was a good one with some unseen (at first) twists. I was able to figure it all out on my own, but it didn't take away from the suspense. Julia and Connor's relationship evolves very quickly and you can tell there was more between the two of them years ago. The only issue I had with the story was to bedroom scenes. I like a good romantic scene, but these were a bit too graphic for me.

We get to see another Kincaid fall in love. I do enjoy how the Kincaids are being developed as a family and their careers in this trilogy. Many of the characters are familiar from the previous Speak No Evil.

Connor Kinkaid and Julia Chandler are sort of enemies to lovers. Connor lost his career by testifying in a case Julia was prosecuting. There have been hard feelings and the view that the other was an enemy. But the attraction never wavered.

Now they work together, to help Emily, Julia's niece. The killers didn't mean to put Emily in trouble as a suspect. Readers know who the killers are from early on, but not whoever is running them. There are a few candidates for that. I felt badly for the killers somewhat.

I didn't feel the relationship was well developed between Connor and Julie. There was sex but they didn't get enough time together to have the intimacy I appreciate.

This thriller continues the trilogy. Brennan writes a good thriller, on the order of Cornwall or Bolton. This book picks up and advances the characters from the first book.

Overall Rating: 5.0 // Action: 4.0 / Emotion: 4.0 / Romance: 4.0 / Sensuous: 3.5 / Suspense: 5.0 // Laughter: 2 / Grins: 3 // Tears: 1 / Teary: 2

Allison Brennan: 5.00:
A favorite author. Like her writing style, her voice, the way she weaves romance into her gripping suspense stories.

See No Evil: 5.00:
Four sentences in this book struck a very personal chord, thus it became a very engrossing, moving, heart-felt story.
"I should have fought harder for custody. But I'm just her aunt. I know the law. It was stacked against me." (Julia, page 59)

Hero: 4.0:
Connor Kincaid: It was impossible not to feel drawn to this rule-breaking, hot-blooded, hunk of a man who was described as "a pit bull when he cared about something." By the end of the book, Connor had resolved the issues tied to his bitterness that overwhelmed him because he had to resign from a job he loved (San Diego Police Department) when he was forced to testify against his brothers in blue.

Heroine: 4.5:
Julia Chandler: A gorgeous deputy district attorney with a take-no-prisoners reputation, who fought for what she believed in. It was impossible not to admire a heroine who would not back down -- to anyone. But . . . she was willing to break the law to save her niece.

Story Line: 4.5:
A uniquely fascinating tale about a villain with a God complex, who manipulated four emotionally wounded teens to kill so he could wreck vengeance without getting his own hands bloody. When Julia's niece, Emily, was suspected of killing her abusive stepfather, Judge Victor Montgomery, she called Connor, a private investigator, to prove Emily's innocence -- even though she was instrumental in the destruction of his career five years ago.

Action: 4.0:
The story line moved at a fast pace as the villain moved the teens around his chess board and Julia, Connor, Dillon, and Will investigated the deaths that were the result of an e-group called Wishlist.

Emotion: 4.0:
Although not as intense as expected because of the way Brennan drew me into this story, it was impossible not to feel sympathy and compassion for so many of the characters; namely, {1} Connor, {2} Julia, {3} Emily, and, surprisingly, {4} Faye.

Romance: 4.0:
There was a stronger feeling of romance in this book than in Brennan's previous four. Brennan had a kiss that Connor and Julia shared five years before with which to work. The fireworks between Connor and Julia bespoke of strong feelings that could not be suppressed.

Sensuous: 3.5:
Lots of sizzle, heat, and sensuality were present when Connor and Julia made love.

Suspense: 5.0:
Brennan is a master when it comes to developing a story that keeps readers on the edge of their seats as they try to figure out who the villain might be -- right along with the main characters.

Secondary Characters: 5.0:
The secondary characters ranged from rich, well-developed characters to barely-there members, but they added great depth to this story. Liked the continued inclusion of the Kincaid family by including: {1} Dillon Kincaid (the psychiatrist), {2} Patrick Kincaid (the e-crimes guru), {3} homicide detective Will Hooper (an honorary Kincaid), and {4} District Attorney Andrew Stanton (the ex-brother-in-law). The villains all added to the rich suspenseful flavor necessary for this story: {1} the number one villain (even though he remained unidentified), {2} the co-villain (who also remained unidentified), {3} Faye Kessler, the most heart-breaking teen villain, {4} Camilla "Cami" Wohler, the most cold-blooded teen villain, {5} Dennis "Skip" Richardson, Jr., a minor teen villain, and {6} Robert "Robbie" Haxton, the other minor teen villain. Julia's relatives were necessary additions: {1} Emily Chandler Montgomery, her niece, and {2} Crystal Montgomery, Emily's mother (the gold-digger). And, last, but definitely not least were two intriguing additions: {1} Selene Borge and {2} Billy Thompson.

A great romantic suspense!

Julia’s niece is being charged with the gruesome murder of her stepfather. Julia is the deputy district attorney and knows that her niece would never kill anyone. In order to prove her niece’s innocence she asks Connor Kincaid, a PI with whom she has a rocky history, to help.

I really enjoyed this book. The suspense was gripping, the murder scenes and villains amazingly written, so well that I actually felt sad at the end of the book when 2 of them died.

I loved that Julia and Connor had a history, it placed a lot more depth on their romance, and the romance was very well written in this book, and definitely part of the main focus of the book.

A good suspense story with a little romance and plenty of action that moved right along. I liked how they all worked to solve the crime but the progression of the hate-to-love relationship was not very believable. When attorney Julia's niece is a murder suspect she asks Connor to investigate despite their old animosity.

I am absolutely loving this series! Great plot, characters, and storytelling that will no doubt keep the readers engrossed in the book.

This book revolves around a group of vigilante killers who are targeting people who they believe have wronged others. And the surprising thing is, they are most probably teenagers! The story starts when Emily is a potential suspect for her stepfather's murder. Julia, her aunt, is the ADA and is gathering a cavalry to prove her niece's innocence. For this, she has to seek Connor's help. There is some bad blood between them because Connor somewhat lost his job because of Julia. It was great how we got flashbacks to their old case where they worked together and developed an attraction toward each other. However, Connor was put in a dilemma between his job and doing the right thing. Having a righteous conscience, he obviously chose the difficult path and lost his job in the process.

Now Julia, Connor, and his brother team up to investigate the series of interconnecting murders. The story also contains the killers" POV and yet it was hard for the readers to ascertain who the criminals might be. Full of suspense and many red herrings, this book contains the proper balance of romance and mystery. Since Julia and Connor already had a history, their relationship was already established and I loved how it evolved into something greater.

The writing of the book flowed seamlessly and it was a captivating read throughout the entire book. I wasn't bored at all but instead found myself trying to finish the book to find how it ended.

Depending how you look at the image, a new story will arise.

Emily Montgomery is abused and silenced. No one listens to her. No one cares. Well, except for her aunt that is.

Julia Chandler works at the District Attorney’s office and has spent the past few years fighting for custody of her niece — ever since her brother, Matt (Emily’s father) died and left her with a mother who couldn’t care less about her.

But everything gets put on hold and is placed into questioning with Emily’s stepfather, Judge Victor Montgomery, is found dead — murdered in a rather gruesome and graphic manner. And Emily was home.

All heads turn to Emily, who is locked up under suicide watch as her aunt recruits the best lawyer (Iris Jones) and private investigator (Connor Kincaid) to get to the bottom of what really happened to Victor.

What no one expects is what they uncover. The killing team and their vendettas to write others’ wrongs.
-----
The second book in the series, See No Evil, does something that most of Allison Brennan’s books don’t do — it doesn’t include the main character of the series. Carina Kincaid, the focus of the first book, Speak No Evil, is away on vacation with her fiancée for the duration of this book. Instead, readers get an inside glance at Carina’s brother, Connor, as well as her partner on the police force, Will Hooper. Additionally, her brothers Patrick and Dillon are pulled in to help on the case as well. It seems like a family reunion while Carina is away.

Only time will tell if Carina makes a reappearance in the third and last book of this trilogy. But if she does, will readers lose out on reading more about Connor and the new love of his life?

Wow. Just wow.

Such a convuluted series of murders that kept my mind wondering and trying to see the connections between them, in addition to WHY they were being targeted in the first place. I found that as the investigation started to come together, you began to really see why things were happening and what the motive was. As sad as it ended up being, the plot line resolved itself well.

I absolutely LOVED this novel. The characters were well written, dynamic. The chemistry between the characters was well-balanced and enjoyable. There was even some romance, and as some may say (as I have read other reviews for novels in this trilogy), pornographic, scenes. Which, in my opinion, didn't detract from the novel in any way, just built upon the chemistry between characters. I don't know - that type of thing in a novel has never really bothered me *shrugs*.

Additionally, something that I really enjoyed about this second instalment in the trilogy, is that it's not a sequential read. As in, it's not necessary to read them in order in my opinion. There was some referencing to the previous novel, but nothing that was so relevant to the story that you absolutely had to have read the first one. Also, the characters did differ from the first instalment, so you got to see another set of characters with a different focus on the ones that were common to the first novel.

All in all, a great read in my opinion, and I'm very happy to have taken my mom's recommendation to read Brennan's work, as it is 100% up my alley of reading interests!

Good book about Lucy's family

I've read more than10 books by Allison Brennan. I like her series about Lucy Kincaid. This trilogy is about Lucy's family. The first book was about Carina Kincaid, Lucy's sister. In this book we meet Connor and Dillan Kincaid, Lucy's brothers.
If would probably have been better to read these books before I read the later ones about Lucy.

This book was a bit confusing when two of the women are not who they pretend to be. Luckily I was reading this book in Kindle or it would have been really confusing trying to figure out how they fit in, listening to the book.

I have a problem with the SWAT medic. "Kincaid here is just going to keep pressure on it while I clean up these little nicks, see if we have anything else we need to be worried about.”

She is fainting from blood loss. Putting in an IV and giving her fluids is needed, not cleaning "little knicks"! “I typed her blood. A-positive. She needs plasma ASAP.”

The ambulance is not going to have blood or plasma! It has to be frozen until you use it! I used to work in the ER as an RN. I've never given plasma to any patient. We gave O negative blood. We didn't have quick tests for blood group.

There were problems with the information about a taser as well.

"It turns out he was hit with a Taser gun.” “They don’t leave physical evidence,” Connor said.

Wrong! The two prongs from a taser leave marks on the body.

So. This book took me forever to finish. I don’t know about you, but I simply did not care about the main characters. I liked the villain(s) though — which is the only reason why I haven’t rated this lower. Overall not Brennan’s best work, but something decent to keep you company if bored.

One thing that really annoyed me though was the relationship between Julia and Connor. Something the synopsis gives away as well is the fact that there is bad blood between them because she cost him his career. In my opinion this is unfounded, but oh well, everyone is entitled to their own feelings, I guess. But then his reason for not hating her anymore? Because she’s so incredibly "gorgeous". … That is not a reason for why you suddenly stop HATING (not even disliking but actually hating) another person. And shortly after it is revealed that she’s been in love with him all along. … I cannot. I mean, as a reader we know how these stories end. But there are a thousand ways to make this couple seem more realistic and not a sad ... whatever this was supposed to be.

The bad guys on the other hand … I kinda, somehow, maybe obsessed over them a little bit. That’s actually the reason why it took me so long to finish this book, because I read all their scenes and had to digest that. Anyway, I really liked the crimes and the characters intertwined within them.
