Sloane Bevan and two-week-old Trey are kidnapped by strangers who speak her rare language and know her family's secrets. She suspects these men are the ones who murdered her husband nine months ago. Now it's her son they want, to raise as one of them. To keep under their control.
Imprisoned in the Moores' opulent estate, Sloane cultivates a plan using her family's ancient magic right under her captors' careful watch. Escape is one thing. Ensuring the Moores won't target her family again is another.
What she doesn't count on is a battle against the Moore brothers: one after her life, one after her sanity, one after her sympathy, and one after her heart. All while her son is being honed into a vicious killer, and it's up to her to plant the seeds that will one day reverse the evil now growing inside him.

This book was intense. And heart wrenching. Illuminating. Beautiful. I can't believe I didn't hate it for how sad it made me feel. This book was a love story and a back story in one. The tale of how Martin and Sloane fell in love was as twisted as it was beautiful. The way that Kay Camden portrayed their love made an otherwise dark story wondrous and breathtaking. The time she took to weave their love righted the balance between captor and captive. I was torn between being indignant on Sloane's behalf (how could Martin expect her to love him given the circumstances and who he was?) and feeling empathy for Martin (unrequited love sucks big time). I didn't think I'd care about their story, but I did and it was wonderful.
The back story portion of this book was very painful. I think I could have been alright not knowing all the details of Trey's home life. Camden did a fair job portraying it in books one and two, but having this new knowledge does help the reader understand Trey and Christian even more. I feel the need to revisit the previous two books now to see if there was any details I missed in my first read. All the secrets, lies, and any lingering questions I had from the previous books regarding Trey and the Moores were answered in this book. I would have liked to hear from Martin as this book is told completely from Sloane's pov, but in the end, it didn't matter much. I liked this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes this series. Don't skip it! It will answer some questions you may have.
What I liked: 1) Martin. He was a complex character, but he was also so wonderful to Sloane and Trey. 2) All the answers to my questions about the Moore family. 3) The writing was as engaging as ever. If I could figure out how, I would post a picture of my tired face right now. Needless to say, I stayed up way too late reading this book. 4) The scenes of intimacy. I like how Kay Camden writes them. They're not graphic at all and they were so poignant .
What I didn't like: 1) We only hear from Sloane. I would have liked to hear from Martin, too. 2) This is completely a prequel. I thought we would get a little more plot from the current time, but I was wrong. :(
First off, I am not a prequel gal. I'm not gonna lie I avoided reading this book for like a month after I finished the second book because I knew I needed to read it but I couldn't let Liv and Trey go. BUT this was probably my favorite book so far! I was great seeing more of the story. I fell in absolute love with Martin. It was actually kinda hard to go back to Trey, but it was great seeing why he's the way he is. I mean you hear about it a little in the first two books but man I had no idea how bad! Also, I have to be honest I identified with Sloane more than Liv. Kay introduced all of these great characters (oh dear Paul) that we got to fall in love with that we may never see again. This book was heartbreaking but I couldn't put in down. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
I just finished the book last night and it was great!!!! I thoroughly enjoyed it and am suffering another book hangover!!! My heart is aching over poor Paul and I love Trey and Christian even more!!! Now the hard part...waiting for the next book!
